The default direct input would be useful for mono language user since it
means other ibus XKB engines are not needed but ibus-hangul has the toggle
keys.

Ok, I have now found that if I am to turn on the Hangul Mode in the
languages pull-down menu thing that it works, but why do I have to turn
that on,

It may be convenient for native koreans.
You can select initial input mode of ibus-hangul in
/usr/lib/ibus/ibus-setup-hangul.
Enable the option

OK, I tried ibus-hangul 1.4.2 in Ubuntu 14.10.
It seems now the default mode is direct input in 1.4.2.
You can toggle the mode with Hangul and Shift+space key

The Korean is the Korean keyboard.
Probably I think you need to select Korean (Hangul) to type
