as a rule of thumb the centrino certified laptops are the easier ones
to install any kind of open source distro, since intel is more open
source friendly and release their hardware documention so that even
third party developers can write drivers.

Ubuntu does work on most laptops out of the box. You may not be able
to get some manufacturer specific features to work , like the hot
keys. Even if you buy a Linux friendly laptop, there can be problems

Well i'm using DELL inspiron 1525 for the last two years and i have no
prob.I've tried various distros they all work well. But i prefer to
use ubuntu and slackware. I think zyxware Technologies provide good
service
