Yes, user groups can create awareness, which is why I started discussing
this topic here. But to motivate a student towards theory, one has to start
at the initial stages of his entry into engineering, and I don't know how

While a faculty is definitely not to be expected to spoon-feed students, it
is the duty of a faculty to introduce important concepts to the students and
act as guides. If the student has to learn everything by himslf/herself from

I am shifting to Chandigarh for the next two years to teach at IISER,

I am talking about the problem I see in CS engineering. But, if you are
referring to the following statement alone
"After all, isn't engineering an application of known scientific
principles?"
then yes, I was speaking in general about engineering here, but only to
stress that science is important

It is related to free/open source software, though rather indirect. Lack of
theoretical knowledge has led to lack of knowledge in some programming
languages like Haskell in certain groups of people working in FOSS, who also
are in the ILUGC mailing list. Haskell is a FOSS software. One of my

Hi Selvakumar,
First of all, thank you for discussing this issue.
As you have listed, you have done Principles of Programming Languages and
Theory of Computation courses(two of the computer science core courses I had
mentioned) . Graph Theory, probably as Arun says, is not in the CEG syllabus
