I was able to install Tiger 10.4 from the disk from eBay and everything
still worked. The upgrades that I downloaded from Apple are what did me in.
Maybe changing out the hard drive should be my next step since the one that
is there could not be repaired.

In 2002 OS-10.4 Tiger did not yet exist!
Probably came with 10.3 Panther on 3 Cds...
And/Or Classic OS-9.x.x which also was included n Cd...
I had an iMac 15" G4/800 "Lampy" from 2008 to 2012
It ran with 9.2.2 and 10.4
After 9.1 and 10.3..
FLASH support issues killed it for ME!!

Thanks for replying. I don't have the original software. I bought system
4.0 from ebay and installed it. In my haste, I installed over what was
there. In hindsight, should have re-formated the disk and started from
scratch. I did reset the PRAM and had no effect. Tried to start in safe
mode
To clarify: I'm using a FW to Thunderbolt adapter to connect.
