Whilst it's more likely to be the first one, you should also not rule

out the second.


Also, it took a while on the dovecot and postfix lists to get you to

provide Version numbers for the software you're seeking help on.  Would be
great if you could do that here too.  No one cares that you're running
Ubuntu, or what version.


You have provided 0 information about the version of horde or imp;

whether you have a user backend, or authenticate with IMAP.


You're also not installing horde in a manner recommended by the devs,

(not that I am one) thus your request for assistance would be directed to
the Ubuntu package maintainer.

Hey everyone.  An OS upgrade can indeed affect Horde if it includes an 
update to the web server or PHP or any software involved with fetching 
and reading email (ie, IMAP).


For example, I am currently holding our Debian upgrade for Apache from 
2.10 to 2.25.x until I can figure out what is causing IMP to not be able 
to authenticate with the IMAP server when using Apache 2.24.x/2.25.x. 
The issue first popped up last July 2016 with an update to 2.24.x and I 
thought it was fixed with 2.25 (and I believe I told this mailing list 
it was fixed a few weeks ago), but about an hour after I sent the "all 
clear" email to the list, I discovered the fix went away as soon as we 
restarted both Apache and php-fpm.  So I dropped back again until I can 
find time to investigate.

I have a couple of questions about how you would want the selection 
process to changed...


 1. If you want to delete/move multiple other mails you have to

So, if you have a message selected and you want to select another to 
read, how would you do it?  The expected behavior is that the selected 
email is the one that is viewed.  So you want to be able to select a 
specific email and it NOT be displayed?


In that case you would need another action to tell the system to 
actually display the selected email, roughly doubling the actions needed 
to read your email and that is NOT something we would support.

I simply delete the group above or below the email I have a question 
about and then select the email I want to read...two clicks...Every 
email client I have ever used works this way.  I think changing Imp to 
require MORE user actions to manage their email is the wrong way to go.

This one really confused me...so I logged in and tried to reset a group 
I was selecting.


I was at first unable to do what you describe as follows:

1. I selected an email by clicking anywhere on the row containing the 
Selection check box - From - Subject - Date - Size.


2. Then I held down the Shift key (Shift+select and Ctrl+select have 
been GUI standards for inclusive and exclusive list selections 
respectively for over 30 years)


3. Then tried to somehow reset the group by clicking anywhere in the 
email list and I could not loose the selection.


Eventually I figured out that if you do NOT follow GUI standards to hold 
down the Shift key to indicate an inclusive multi-select, then the 
interface correctly sees your selection request as NOT a multi-select 
and behaves as it should.


Again, I may not understand and if I miss your point then I apologize.

Thanks Jan, that was helpful as it meant the issue was in our install.

Following a hunch I found the problem.   The version of jquery that 
Debian installs is 1.7.2 and I could see in GIT that Horde uses 1.11.2.


For now I took the easy way to fix it, I copied jquery.js and 
jquery.min.js from the Horde GIT repo to our debian jquery directory for 
Horde to pick up from there.


And it works fine.

I will see if I can talk to the Debian maintainer for jquery and see if 
we can get a more current version so I do not have to cheat like this 
to make things work.  ;-)

Right, I remember seeing the original issue but did not follow up as
it involved active sync.

However, in reading the bug report it looks like the same issue.  The
addition of the empty reference name pattern  without the
delimiting space between it and the mailbox name appears to be the
problem.

I will add my debug log output and the results of manual testing with
Cyrus to the bug report.


My shot-in-the-dark guess is that this PHP fix is broken (would
explain why 5.5.21 and 5.6.5 break things):

But I'm out of country and won't be able to look at this anytime
soon.  The best course of action would be for someone to come up with
a reproducible test case to verify.

I voted for it...did not know enough to make an intelligent
comment...but I voted for it and sent the link to several users of our
webmail system to vote for it.

Hopefully others on this list will as well since it is a show stopper
for Horde Imp with the latest PHP 5.5.21  5.6.5.



FWIW, I finally figured out that the issue with the IMAP LIST command 
was NOT that there was a missing space between the mailbox name and the 
empty reference name pattern.  The problem is the empty reference name 
pattern should not be there at all.


I realize this is almost certainly caused by the regression bug 
https://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=68948


In the meantime I had made a very ugly and possibly very stupid 
temporary fix so our users can read their email.  I modified 
Horde/Imap/Client/Data/Format/Filter/Quote.php to NOT do anything (ie, 
do not add the ) if the length of the incoming bucket data is 0.


I only did this as a last resort and I am uncertain about potential 
side-effects.  I will post more as we learn more in using my ugly hack.

space between it and the mailbox name appears to be the problem.

My shot-in-the-dark guess is that this PHP fix is broken (would
explain why 5.5.21 and 5.6.5 break things):

But I'm out of country and won't be able to look at this anytime
soon.  The best course of action would be for someone to come up with
a reproducible test case to verify.

I voted for it...did not know enough to make an intelligent 
comment...but I voted for it and sent the link to several users of our 
webmail system to vote for it.


Hopefully others on this list will as well since it is a show stopper 
for Horde Imp with the latest PHP 5.5.21  5.6.5.

with an empty mail block (ie, no inbox display) BUT the block with

IMAP access using other mail clients like Thunderbird and K9 on my
phone
works fine.

I think the problem is somewhere in the new PHP 5.6.5, but so far I

not been able to find any sort of smoking gun that points to exactly
which change is the problem.

Syslog in Horde debug mode reports the lines below for HORDE [imp] and
Cyrus. You can see the original login success for IMAP, then several
failures of 'listMailBoxes' as I navigated from the opening portal, to
the config to enable debug logging and back to the portal to click on
the Mail portal block and document the error.  I only included the
relevant Cyrus  Horde log entries (there are a LOT of them) for the
initial login + failure and the debug failure.

FYI, the Cyrus fetching user_deny.db entry for.. log entries are
normal.  I am not a Cyrus guru so I am not sure why they are there,
but
they have always been there before this issue started and are also
there
when checking my IMAP email with Thunderbird or K9.

In summary: I think this is being caused by the PHP update yesterday. 
Cyrus did not change and is working fine with other clients and Horde 
did not change either.  If anyone has any ideas about what I could check 
for in PHP, it would be greatly appreciated.

The problem is that now when you login to Horde, the portal comes up
with an empty mail block (ie, no inbox display) BUT the block with
Newest Unseen Messages is fine.  If you try to go to Imp to see your
email you are logged out with the onscreen error IMAP error reported by
server.

IMAP access using other mail clients like Thunderbird and K9 on my phone
works fine.

I think the problem is somewhere in the new PHP 5.6.5, but so far I have
not been able to find any sort of smoking gun that points to exactly
which change is the problem.

Syslog in Horde debug mode reports the lines below for HORDE [imp] and
Cyrus. You can see the original login success for IMAP, then several
failures of 'listMailBoxes' as I navigated from the opening portal, to
the config to enable debug logging and back to the portal to click on
the Mail portal block and document the error.  I only included the
relevant Cyrus  Horde log entries (there are a LOT of them) for the
initial login + failure and the debug failure.

FYI, the Cyrus fetching user_deny.db entry for.. log entries are
normal.  I am not a Cyrus guru so I am not sure why they are there, but
they have always been there before this issue started and are also there
when checking my IMAP email with Thunderbird or K9.

jquery-mobile version requirement was specified, so I grabbed the latest.

I will switch to using v 1.3.2 which is still available at
jquerymobile.com/download


That's the version shipped with (the latest version of) Horde_Core, FWIW.

OK, so it sounds like the best solution is for the debian php-horde-core 
package to use the jqery-mobile shipped in Horde_Core instead of setting 
up sym links that point to the Debian javascript/jquery-mobile package.


I will see about filing a bug report with Debian about this.

[imp] IMAP Folders and Email Display Problems in SmartMobile View

We have a very strange problem that I have been unable to trace and I 
wonder if anyone recognizes this and can tell me what I need to change 
to fix this.  I will file a bug report if I can determine this is not a 
configuration issue.


We are running a Debian install with PHP 5.6.4, Horde 5.2.1, IMP 6.2.2,
and the latest Debian package for jquery.mobile.js loads version 1.2.0.

When using the smartmobile view we are able to login and use all apps 
except IMP.  With IMP we are seeing the following behavior in all mobile 
or desktop browsers (Safari, K9, IE, FF, Chrome) that we have tested so far:


I watched firebug during all page loads and everything is being loaded 
as it should be.  Based on the error below I made certain that 
jquery.mobile.min.js (v1.2.0) is loading, about 100ms after smartmobile.js.


No Horde or PHP errors are being logged to syslog when these problems 
happen.


- After login we click on Mail (mailbox display pref set to display 
folders after login and Use IMAP mailbox subscriptions? is UNchecked) 
and get an empty mail Folders display with menu bars top and bottom.


In firebug on Chrome we get the following console error for line 316 of 
smartmobile.js: Uncaught TypeError: undefined is not a function

of smartmobile.js (same as above)


- Clicking on Refresh bring up the list of emails in the selected folder.

- Click on an email brings up top  bottom menu bars, the same line 316 
error and no email.  This time however there is no refresh option that 
will display the email without running into the $.mobile.navigate is 
not a function error.  So we can not see email in smartmobile view.


So I am going to investigate the possibility of a version problem with 
jquery.mobile.js 1.2.0.  I would really appreciate it if anyone can 
confirm the version issue or knows of something else I should look at.

Try clearing all your cookies for the login domain.  We will see this

FWIW, on my installation (Horde Groupware 5.2.2), once I click the arrow 
to see the header addresses for an email and I do NOT shrink it back 
down, all future emails are displayed with the full header view...and it 
retains that setting between sessions.


So IMHO an explicit configuration option is really not needed.

Granted, you have to hover your mouse over the To or From name to notice 
that you can see the actual email address, but personally I think this 
is a far cleaner look AND looks better on a smaller laptop or netbook 
screen.


I suppose it all comes down to the fact that developers do NOT have 
unlimited resources and time and have to decide what is most important 
to spend time working on.


The idea that a configuration option for an expanded display of the 
email header address fields is valid, but not critical enough to spend 
considerable time working on at this time (unless you want to fund 
development of such an option and pay someone to add that feature). 
Indeed, it appears it has already been implemented to a limited degree 
as mentioned above.

This has happened to me a few times in the past with Chrome.  Try 
clearing your cookies and browser history before logging in again.


I am not sure what the actual problem is, but clearing cookies and my 
browser history for my horde login URL has always fixed it for me.

JSON code with known bugs (which, I should mention, have been known for
a year and *still* aren't fixed).



Well the issue is not quite that simple and Debian isn't the only distro 
that has a problem with a morality clause in software.

Unfortunately the simplest solution, removing the morality clause was 
turned down by the license author Douglas Crockford with the reply The

The real twist is Mr Crawford granted IBM an exception, as a joke.  Too 
bad he won't do the same for the open source community.

with null characters.  We use null characters a bunch in IMP data for
technical reasons I won't go into here.  So Debian ships with broken
JSON code with known bugs (which, I should mention, have been known for
a year and *still* aren't fixed).



Well the issue is not quite that simple and Debian isn't the only
distro that has a problem with a morality clause in software.


This has been covered before.  Regardless of what anyone feels
personally/morally about the clause, *legally* the clause causes no
substantial issues - or at least no more substantial issues than any
other supposed free license.

I really don't care that Debian gets the whole legal argument wrong.
Whatever - that pissing contest is not my idea of intellectual stimulation.

What I do care is that they ship BROKEN software that claims to be PHP,
when it really isn't.  In other words: Debian PHP 5.x.y !== PHP 5.x.y.

But I definitely agree this line of discussion is a complete waste of 
all of our time.


However, we still need a solution...So I gather that the options for 
anyone using a Debian distro are:


1. Switch to a non-debian distro...really not feasible for us as our 
many debian servers are already running other services with thousands of 
users and we do not have the resources nor expertise to switch distros.


2. Live with the bug caused by the Debian PHP JSON-C package not 
handling null (and apparently some other) characters.


3. Recompile our own version of PHP with Mr Crockford's 
morality-constrained package and use it on our servers.  Again we do 
not have the expertise nor time to maintain our own PHP version.


4. Are the two JSON-C packages so incompatible that end software (ie 
Horde) could not be modified to work with either one?  I expect the 
Horde team has already considered this and that means it is not feasible 
nor should they have to.  If this is really a bug in the free version of 
PHP JSON-C, then the best thing would be to fix the bug.


and that leads us to

5. See if we could help fund added development in the Debian JSON-C 
package to resolve the null (and other) character handling bugs.


6. See if we can get Mr Crockford to grant Debian and PHP the same 
exception to his morality clause that he granted to IBM.  Based on his 
treating this as a funny joke, I expect not.


So it looks to me like #5 is the best and possibly only way to proceed 
at this time.


Toward that end, is this the problem bug?

If so then I will be happy to see if we can accelerate getting the code

What are your Horde  IMAP server log messages when this happens?

We have the same versions of Horde  IMP and use quotas all the time
with Cyrus with no problem.



FWIW, displaying IMAP quotas for horde 5.2/imp 6.2 is enabled in our 
system using the default config in imp/config/backends.php for the 
advanced IMAP server:


'quota' = array(
'driver' = 'imap',
'params' = array(
'hide_when_unlimited' = true,
'unit' = 'MB'
)
),

Then we enable the advanced server and disable the base imap server 
in our imp/config/backends.local.php


$servers ['imap']['disabled'] = true;
$servers ['advanced']['disabled'] = false;

This works fine with a Cyrus IMAP server.  Our signup web server sets 
the IMAP quotas in the Cyrus IMAP server when an address is added. 
System administrators can modify the Cyrus IMAP quotas as needed using 
our admin console.

Hotmail (mail.live.com) tells you all about it in the error message you 
provided above.  For whatever reason, they (Hotmail) are blocking/not 
accepting email from the IP address block that your IP is in.


A lot of overly simplistic spam filters try to solve the problem of spam 
by just refusing to accept email from whole swaths of IP addresses. 
These are often dynamic IP addresses assigned to residential users.


It is likely that another residential user with an IP from your ISP has 
an infected PC that is spewing spam and/or viruses and Hotmail has just 
blocked a bunch of IPs on either side of the offending IP and you have 
been caught in the same net block.


You may be able to send your outgoing email through your ISP's smtp 
server.  You can check on this when you contact them to explain that 
their IPs are blocked and can they contact Hotmail to get them 
unblocked.  Of course then they may tell you you should not be sending 
email out from a dynamic IP and that is when you ask them how to relay 
your email out through their smtp server.

In most clients bcc is not even shown in the sent folder, and is certainly
not printed.  So what you're trying to do is break email standards.

Actually, I use Thunderbird/Icedove and if the BCC exists, I can see it 
(and print it) by default.


BCC is removed by the MTA and handled separately so that the To/CC 
recipients never see the BCC address.  So the BCC address will ONLY be 
present in the copy that the mail client sees when that mail was written 
by the user or the user was the BCC recipient.


In all cases I can think of it is entirely appropriate for the mail 
client to display AND print the BCC address if it is present.  It will 
just not be present if you were not the BCC recipient or the sender.

Guys, this is just another open source software (a superb one).  Let's all 
understand what we doing here.  Those developers who dedicate their time 
(time=life) to writing this code and making it available to you and me are not 
doing it because they are great friends of ours or that they owe us something.  
They are doing it because they love the product they are developing and they 
want the world to benefit from it (and other reasons I am sure).

Let's not be so demanding as to suggest that if they take too long to put a 
release out, we are going to fire them.

They do have a donation link and they also have a way for us to fund the 
implementation of features.  If you feel strongly that releases should happen 
in a timely manner, then fund that.  If you feel strongly that a feature should 
exist, then fund that!  Other than that, all we can do as users of this product 
is to spread the word as to how good it is, keep using it and assist in helping 
others with their problems on this list.  Not to pester them about adding 
features and the like.  Do I agree with everything in the product and how it is 
implemented? No. But you can never find any product that everyone likes and 
agrees with.  All I can do is support the product by using it, and support the 
developers by funding them and if I can't fund them, then tell the what a good 
job they are doing once in a while.

that I donated to as well (I forget how much)?  Cause we are also very 
excited about that feature.  Although I am assuming that it will still 
need some beta testing before we release to our real users.  ;-)

as much as to anyone in the list that might forget the enormous benefits 
of OSS and the option to help pay the developers.


FWIW, I think once 6.2 is out, we can ALL really help by providing some 
detailed test reports if we see any problems.  Good testing and detailed 
problem reports are so important and not easy to do.

OK.  I am understandingBut, is the following logic worth implementing?

Option 1: If more than 1 message is selected, clicking on delete should not
delete the message which has also been opened for viewing.  It should
exclude the mail which has been opened for viewing.

also opened for viewing or not, clicking delete button, should delete that
mail.

Sorry to trouble you with my ideas and it may not be feasible also.  But,
I think, this may solve our users issue of unknowingly deleting the mail
which was basically opened for viewing and not for deleting purpose.


I feel this logic is neither intuitive, expected nor needed.

You selected the message in the window, so any action you apply should 
be applied to the displayed message regardless of if you have selected 
additional messages.  If you do NOT want the action to be applied to the 
message you selected in the viewing window, then unselect it.


FWIW, I just went to imp in horizontal view, selected an email to view, 
scrolled down and selected a new email.  When I selected the second 
email the first email disappeared from the view and was replaced with a 
message...2 messages selected.


So it was blindly obvious that two emails are selected and now when I 
click delete, TWO emails are going to be deleted.  And this is as it 
should be because two emails were selected and the computer has NO way 
to know that I do not want to delete one of them.


Of course we all make mistakes, so the logical solution is to give them 
a way to recover.  So every new user automatically gets a Trash folder 
and the default action when deleting email is to move deleted email to 
trash.  Then we have set imp up to default to clearing the trash folder 
monthly.  The user can turn this off if they are not worried about disk 
space limits.

The original poster may be referring to features such as Exchange's
Information Rights Management. This allows exactly this level of

Good point.  I forgot that today you can send an email encrypted by one 
of the several proprietary Information Rights Management (IRM) systems 
(Oracle, Adobe, Microsoft, etc) and that email can only be decrypted and 
used appropriately by someone with the same IRM system.


I did a bit of searching and did not find anything discussing any open 
IRM standards that could be used by Horde or any other open source 
application.  But if such standards exist, I would hope we, the horde 
community, could eventually expand the system to be able to offer it.

can step up and either pay the horde team to add it or one of us can do 
it ourselves and give it back to the community.

even be in discussion.


Also, too many big companies (with well paid lawyers) are making big $ 
off it right now.  Because of that I bet Open Source IRM would probably 
be dragged into court on patent claims if it began to threaten their

I am not sure if this is more appropriate for the imp or horde mailing 
lists.  I apologize in advance if I got it wrong.


FanMail is upgrading our email service to the current Horde Webmail 
service suite.


We have been testing with the latest Debian packaged versions and one 
thing we have really missed is the ability to fetch email from other 
accounts.  I personally have to keep bouncing back to our current 
production service and run FetchMail to pull in my Gmail and cable 
company email so I don't have to log into and read three separate email 
accounts.


So, I have a question for all you awesome Horde developers...do any of 
you have the time to work on updating the old fetchmail feature to work 
with the latest horde/imp, and do you have any sort of estimate as to 
the cost?


We are not a big company, but we need fetchmail (or something that will 
check and pull in email from multiple accounts), are not going to have 
the time to develop it ourselves, and would like to be able to 
contribute something back to the excellent Horde project.

I should have stated my query differently.  We need the capability to 
access multiple accounts.  It just happens that is what fetchmail did, 
so I used it as a shorthand description of the Use Case..


FWIW, I have used fetchmail for about 6 years, once or twice a day, and 
never had any trouble with it (even used it last night on our production 
system to fetch over 300 emails from gmail).  But I am a sample size of 
1 and I honestly do not know who else in our user base uses it.


So, weeks of work.  I wonder if anyone else on the list needs the 
ability to access email in multiple accounts through the web interface? 
 Perhaps several companies could get together and pledge enough?


Is there anyone else on this list that would be willing to help fund 
development of a fetchmail capability ? (ie, same end result as the 
old fetchmail, only done differently)

I recently brought a new server online running Groupware 5.0.4 and
Imp 6.0.4 I have come across a strange issue. Any attachments over
100 KB are corrupted. I am not seeing any errors on the server.
Larger files around a 1MB stall while uploading. I've check my
php.ini and my upload_max_filesize is 25MB post_max_size is 50MB and
memory_limit in 128MB. I'm not sure what else to check at this point.
any help would be greatly appreciated


Where do you store attachments? If in VFS, which backend do you use?

I am using VFS and the backend is MySQL/PDO



FWIW, we are testing the same Groupware/Imp versions using the local FS 
for the VFS backend and not having any difficulties with large (1MB+) 
attachments.

Arjen, thank you.  I had forgotten about that feature.  We did not use it 
because we do not use MySQL and I believe it requires the SQL db, no?.

OK, you said any suggestion...

We use two techniques to stop outgoing spam.  The first is pretty complex and 
not for everyone.  You must use version control like Git or Bazaar to keep your 
local code changes safe when you do upstream updates (and using PEAR is out). 
The second technique is simple but not free.


1. We run memcache on the horde servers.  We then added local code to 
horde/imp/lib/Compose.php to save and update a 24 hour count of recipients in 
memcache for a sender.


Then when a sender hits the 24 hr limit or a limit for the number of addresses 
in a single email (spammers love to send to 40 or 50 BCC addresses), we 
deactivate the sender (so they can not send any more until an admin has taken 
action) and send a note to an admin so someone can follow up and decide if this 
is a spammer OR a valid user whose account was stolen.


I am sure someone like Chuck or Jan could write a patch for you on a consulting 
basis.  I have been trying to get our code organized and clean enough that we 
could submit it as something just about anyone could use.  But right now it is 
tied pretty closely to our LDAP user store which is pretty complicated.


2. This is not free...For the horde mailer config item we use smtp and point it 
to antespam.com.  AnteSpam checks the outgoing email for spam and viruses.  When 
it finds either, it quarantines the email and sends a note to the user and the 
domain admin.  The user can manually free the email from quarantine.  But since 
a spammer needs to send a large quantity of spam, needing to release emails from 
quarantine quickly kills his/her profits.  Also, the domain admin can also look 
at the email and if it is really spam, they can quickly shut down the spammer.


I wish I had a better idea to suggest.  But we have found that spammers are 
clever and persistent and hard to stop.

you anyway. I received a number of complaints from my clients, many
non-profit, about whitelist and blacklist. They are stating it implies
black is bad and white is good. Just think it over and perhaps you and
your team could change it to redlist and greenlist..

At first I was hotheaded about it, but when I thought about it I
realized they may have a point.. Even though the use of those two colors
was not meant to be hurtful or discriminatory.

In AnteSpam we use Block and Pass lists based on the functions the lists serve. 
 And it has seemed to catch on among our users.
