searches on the opensolaris.org site and found references to Sun
Trunking software, but it looks like you need a special card for that
and an opensolaris version of the pkg isn't present in the repo.

Thanks for those details. That enabled me to successfully build pidgin.
However my question was more targeted at finding out if the process I was
following is the correct process to build ANY tool from its spec file. It
seemed to me that there was a piece of the puzzle missing in
