Though I knew that it would flower, I was not fortunate enough to see the plant in flowering in Chennai. Let me try out now in Mysore city. It is called *sule sappu *in Kannada and *lachaikottei* in Tamil. The leaves are used for cooking in Chennai. The leaves have medicinal properties too (elephantiasis). In a meeting of the Bombay Natural History Society on 3rd December 1890, he gave a talk on the gardens of Bombay and had some flattering things to say about this tree: The most striking tree of our gardens is perhaps the Lettuce-tree (*Pisonia alba*), which cannot fail to attract attention by the splendid effect of its bright yellow foliage, nowhere I believe so perfectly developed as in Bombay. - G. [efloraofindia:156152] The elusive Cucumis prophetarum
Dear members I was just checking some Curcurbitaceae uploads, and noticed that in at least 8 threads C. prophetarum was suggested as identification of the plant, which mostly turned out to be Cucumis sativus var. hardwickii, and one as Cyclanthera, and none to date as C. prophetarum. I request members to hunt for the plants of C. prophetarum and upload the same. It would be a real addition to the group. [efloraofindia:156161] Over to mini Switzerland in Uttarakhand
Dear members Due to uncertainty of programme with possible election duties of Balkar ji, this could not announced on the group, but finally we have managed a short trip to Uttarakhand starting today evening and coming back on 3rd June. Our main focus would be Chopta, considered as mini Switzerland, We may explore surrounding areas spending some time at Rishikesh, Lansdowne and Srinagar. Hope to get some good photographs, especially of orchids as our orchid expert Smita ji is joining us. Myself, my wife, Balkar ji and Smita would be visiting the area, Nidhan ji having to cancel due to some health problem. Any suggestions about areas to focus, especially from Rawat ji, Tiwari ji and Pankaj ji who know the area very well, are welcome. I won't be able to participate in Asteraceae Fortnight for first three days, but possibly try to compensate 4th onwards. Nidhan ji, Rawat ji, Dinesh ji, I am sure will keep you busy with uploads in our absence. -- Dr. Gurcharan Singh Retired Associate Professor SGTB Khalsa College, University of Delhi, Delhi-110007 Res: 932 Anand Kunj, Vikas Puri, New Delhi-110018. RE: [efloraofindia:156175] Re: Pisonia alba flowering in Mumbai
Hi All I have never seen Pisonia alba with flowers. It is grown in widely Sri Lnka as a live fence tree and the leaves are a popular vegetable. Can you please forward an image of it. Thanks and regards Sivaplan From: nmk@gmail.com Date: Tue, 28 May 2013 17:55:41 +0530 Subject: Re: [efloraofindia:156128] Re: Pisonia alba flowering in Mumbai To: swamy.c...@gmail.com CC: indiantreepix@googlegroups.com I have never seen this tree flowering although very common. This plant is very very common in Chennai also, rather very popular shrub / a small tree. Most commonly used for hedges (live fence) alternatively with red Acalypha, which gives a stunning effect to the onlookers.I have never seen it in flowering, though I was very keenly observing the plant in around Chennai for more than 20 years ! Though I knew that it would flower, I was not fortunate enough to see the plant in flowering in Chennai. Let me try out now in Mysore city. It is called sule sappu in Kannada and lachaikottei in Tamil. The leaves are used for cooking in Chennai. The leaves have medicinal properties too (elephantiasis). Clicked today morning in a traffic island in South Mumbai. It is intriguing to note that G. Carstensen, the Danish superintendent of the Victoria Gardens in Mumbai, remarked upon the distinctive appeal of this tree way back in 1890. In a meeting of the Bombay Natural History Society on 3rd December 1890, he gave a talk on the gardens of Bombay and had some flattering things to say about this tree: The most striking tree of our gardens is perhaps the Lettuce-tree (Pisonia alba), which cannot fail to attract attention by the splendid effect of its bright yellow foliage, nowhere I believe so perfectly developed as in Bombay. - G. Carstensen, Bombay Gardens, p. 410, Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society, Vol. V, 1890.
