2017-02-16 Thread Dinesh Valke
Satish ji, the posted plant looks like an ornamental plant. You have
described its habitat as "wild". I think the garden plant must have
"escaped" and has grown in nearby place, making it seem like growing wild.

[efloraofindia:263993] Fwd: Astragalus ??himalayanus

2017-02-16 Thread J.M. Garg
Thanks, Chadwell ji
-- Forwarded message --
From: "C CHADWELL"
Date: 17 Feb 2017 7:48 a.m.
Subject: Astragalus ??himalayanus
To: "J.M. Garg"
Cc:

I have 5 images taken by Krishan Lal, clearly of two separate plants - no
locations
provided (though would have been somewhere in H.P.) both identified as
A.himalayanus -
presumably by an expert in the genus.

However, to my eye they clearly belong to separate species.

I consider it would only ADD to the confusion within this genus to post
them at this stage,
so have decided NOT to.

As I have explained, this is a very large and difficult genus
identification-wise.

It would take a long time to scrutinise the whole genus for the Himalaya.
At present I am
not in a position to do so. Hopefully, at some stage in the future, I
will be able to comment
meaningfully about these images and then post them.

Sometimes it is better NOT to complicate the situation by adding highly
speculative identifications.

Best Wishes,

Chris Chadwell

[efloraofindia:263986] Fwd: Codonopsis clematidea in cultivation

To: "J.M. Garg"

Images of what I understand to be Codonopsis clematidea
cultivated in a garden in Portland, Oregon.

This species is the commonest of the non-climbing Codonopsis in
cultivation. It is the most straightforward to grow.

The images show the internal markings which are quite unlike those of
C.ovata, along with large, reflexed sepals.

MANY Codonopsis in cultivation which are labelled as less common species,
frequently turn out to be C.clematidea.

Re: [efloraofindia:263970] Orchid For ID : Flower Show,Mumbai : 06FEB17 : AK-9

2017-02-16 Thread Pankaj Kumar
This is an interesting hybrid with Vanda and Aerides I think.
I am no good at hybrids.
You will be surprised that it took 15-20 Million years to produce around
28,000 wild orchids but it took only around 150 years to produce more than
1,10,000 hybrids. And trust me, I have no idea of their identification.
Even the whole flora of India wont have plants more than 25,000.
Thanks and regards
Pankaj

[efloraofindia:263935] Fwd: Fwd: Fwd: Primula malacoides Franch. (accepted name) or Primula forbesii (accepted name)

To: "J.M. Garg"

I remain curious as to how Primula forbesii, a native of China, reached and
became naturalised around
temples in Nepal?

In the UK we have many naturalised plants both intentionally introduced for
their ornamental merit and
the escaped (as was the case for Impatiens glandulifera) whilst others
arrived accidentaly.

I have seen quite a number of British "cottage garden" type plants growing
in gardens in the hills of
India which presumably were introduced by the British (most are not British
native species). Some of
these are found in Nepal but Primula forbesii whilst pretty enough and of
interest to Primula enthusiasts,
surely would be of minimal to zero interest to most garden-lovers in Nepal.

Does the explanation lie in their proximity to temples?

I do not think too many plants have been introduced from China into Nepal
for their ornamental merit.

Could the seed of P.forbesii have arrived amongst a product from SW China?

Richards in his PRIMULA tome mentions Forrest's observations about
P.malacoides (closely related to
P.forbesii) which was then a weed of cultivated fields around 2000m, who
considered it had become much
more widespread owing to the cultivation of beans, as bundles of these were
carried into villages with
fruiting sprays of the primula attached.

Primulas are utilised in Tibetan Medicine but I was not aware anything like
P.forbesii is utilised nor that they
are cultivated in temple gardens.

Best Wishes,

Chris Chadwell

This plant is P. forbesii, a winter-flowering annual from China which is
extensively naturalised around Kathmandu.

Are you sure it is a tree? It is hard to say from these habit pictures but
you might consider Dalbergia volubilis.
Dalbergia lanceolaria does not normally flower in cold season.
