[indiantreepix:23694] Re: Ipomoea obscura (Small white morning glory)

2009-11-22 Thread Tabish
I would urge Shrikant ji to have another look at this flower. In
Ipomoea obscura, the corolla tube is supposed to be bell-shaped which
open into an almost flat flower. The flower is usually white with
yellowish nectar guides. There is a distinct purple or brown in the
throat. Garg ji flower shows all these features. The purple, which
would have been visible in the throat in a front view, is visible at
the base of the flower tube. Also, in Garg ji's pictures, flowers are
mostly single, on long peduncles, and comparatively short flower-
stalks.
Merremia umbellata flowers are borne in tight umbel-like clusters, see
a pic below:
http://plants.usda.gov/java/largeImage?imageID=meum_001_avp.tif
The flowers in Garg ji's pictures are not in a tight umbel. There is
no purple or brown in the throat of Merremia umbellata flowers.
Lastly, the corolla of Merremia umbellata is slightly lobed. Garg ji's
flowers are not lobed.
Thus I believe this should be Ipomoea obscura.
   Best wishes

 Dear Mr. Garg,
Your recent posting on the subject plant has corolla with bell shape and
bands on corolla lobes are not clearly defined, so it would be *Merremia*.
With axillary umbellate cymes this plant would be *M. umbellata*.
*I. obscura* would have had wheel shaped corolla and bands on corolla lobes
would be clearly defined. ( FOS wrongly metions corolla to be 'funnel
shaped', it should have been wheel shaped). Regards

 Dear Sir,

I agree with Dr. Pankajkumar's comments on this subject. Let me share some
of my thoughts on close up photography of flowers or similar subjects.
Everyone's objective is to get all parts of small objects in sharp focus
while shooting from a close range. Achieving the minimum aperture is the
only option to get sharpness which is possible with a ring flash. Shadowless
images and dark background are other advantages of a close up flash.
Synchrospeed of 250 eliminates the need of a tripod. There are some
drawbacks of this option (saturation of some colours) and a large number of
photographers therefore do not prefer this. Response of some colours and
surfaces of flowers/leaves to the flash is unpredictable but the digital
cameras have eliminated this limitation. Sharpness with sunlight depends on
field conditions but with a flash you can safely forget about light
condition. I am attaching a picture (though not very good) where I had faced
a lot of difficulty with the colour and the size (5 mm) of the flower.
Members may also guess the ID of this rare plant. I have used D300-Nikkor 60
G ED micro lens with a ring flash. The distance from the film plane is 18.5
 cm.

I draw a little attention to the geometry in close ups. Firstly the camera
must be held in such a way that the film plane (or the sensor)is parallel to
the subject in case of flat shaped objects (Butterfly with wings held flat),
in case of 3D objects 3 points distributed on the subject should be
equidistant from the film plane. Secondly manual focussing should be used so
that you can focus at the center of the subject. It is easier to adjust lens
to the minimum focus distance and then adjust the camera forward or backward
 for accurate focussing.

You could also remember to 'make up' the subject by removing dried flowers,
leaves or cobwebs around and in the background for the aesthetics of the
picture. I have a friend who washes leaves and wipes the flowers with a
 tissue for duedrops before shooting.

Lastly the choice of the equipment depends on the purpose and the end use
of photography. I use photography merely as a medium for illustrations
 rather than an art.

I will like to know others' views on this.

You could also remember to 'make up' the subject by removing dried
flowers, leaves or cobwebs around and in the background for the aesthetics
of the picture. I have a friend who washes leaves and wipes the flowers with
a tissue for duedrops before shooting.

Lastly the choice of the equipment depends on the purpose and the end use
of photography. I use photography merely as a medium for illustrations
 rather than an art.

I will like to know others' views on this.

[indiantreepix:23709] Re: Close ups

2009-11-22 Thread Dr. Pankaj Kumar
All kinds of flashes do give different results to the original color
of the flowers. Camera does work wonders with the pictures too. But
there is no harm in editing pictures to bring it to natural colours.
White, red and blue are the colours which are maximum affected by
using flashed. Ring flash may brighten your white flowers. So to avoid
the brightening, you can use a white paper to cover the flash, it
reduces the intensity of the flash, I use it very often to get good
results.
You dont need a very sophisticated camera for good pictures, infact I
have taken some very good pictures using simple coolpix S1 (that can
be bought in 10,000 rs) and I am a diehard NIKON GUY!!. I remember
Navendu always used D60 with 60mm Nikkor lens, with Vivitar ring flash
and got some extraordinary results, his only drawback was, he never
takes pictures of flowers with leaves, that may not be taxonomically
correct. But he is one of the best young photographers I have ever
met.
Apart from good photograph a good taxonomist can also try to
illustrate their plant with sketches, for better expression of
characters. I will share one post separately with this regard, hope
you all will like it.

Re: [indiantreepix:23710] Re: Close ups

2009-11-22 Thread Gurcharan Singh
Pankaj ji
While trying to migrate to true macro lens I just learnt about single
element close up lenses (which I use presently) and double element close up
lenses

At about 3-4x times that cost are double-element achromat close-up lenses,
like Canon's 250D and 500D, or Hoya's Close Up Macro Multicoated. These will
give much better results, but then the limitation will be the base lens with
which they're used. Similar to using extension tubes.

Any experience with these and your comments on these.

[indiantreepix:23720] Re: Close ups

2009-11-22 Thread Dr. Pankaj Kumar
Respected Gurcharan Sir,

Both of these lenses which you have mentioned will not give results as
good as a professional macro lens compatible to your camera. These
lenses are nothing but magnifying glasses, you may use more than one
at a time, It brings a buldge in the central area of the image, and
secondly, on the periphery of the image there will be aberration too.
To avoid this you can use lower apertures but with good flash but
still it will not have that quality as that of professional lens.

Just if u wish to check how good your lenses is working, make squares
on inset, on the paper, and take a picture, from as close as you can
get to it. then check in the image whether the squares are looking
like squares, i.e., do they have straight lines or curved?

For your camera model, you have only two options of macro lens from
Sony, but these lenses are too costly (You may check in grey market
for lower price):

1. SAL100M28 - 100mm F2.8 Macro, minimum distance 35cm and image size
will be 100% (59,000/-).
2. SAL50M28 - 50mm F2.8 Macro, minimum distance 55cm and the image
size will be 50% (39,990/-)

image size will be 100% - this means, when you focus the image at
the closest distance, what you see in the viewfinder will be 100% of
the actual size of the subject.

A good ring flash which can be used with any of the lenses you have
mentioned as well as the two i suggested will cost around 6000/-
(Vivitar).

Pankaj

More feedback:
Dear friends,
I have this tree in my farm (in Erode disrtict,Tamil nadu). How it reached
is not known. May be by my habit of collecting seeds when going in to the
forest and throwing the same in the farm.
It is a very fast growing one- grown near to irrigation pipe outlet, very
hardy also. Can any one inform about the tree. It may be economically
valuable too considering its hardiness.

In Dr.Almeida's 'Flora of Maharashtra' Vol 1, Acacia catechuoides
[A.catechu] is distinct from Acacia polycantha [A.suma].

 Dear Mr. Garg,
I used to know this tree as A. suma (Roxb.) Buch.-Ham. ex Voigt. on account
of whitish flaky bark (AS per t. Cooke's flora) but the BSI flora has merged
this with A. catechu which has dark coloured bark. Unless there are further
changes this would be *A. catechu* (L.f.) Willd. Rgds

The photos were taken from a medicinal plant garden at National Institute
of Pharmaceutical Education and research (NIPER) Mohali, Punjab. the
gardener there says that he purchased the plants from a nursery and the
nursery wala said its Acacia catechu. however it doesn't seem to me like
Acacia catechu. its bark, stem and canopy are very different. what is this
 ???

A good ring flash which can be used with any of the lenses you have
mentioned as well as the two i suggested will cost around 6000/-
 (Vivitar).

 Pankaj

Scientific: Adina cordifolia

We reached Dandeli in the morning and the first place on our itinerary was the
old Timber Yard which falls under the purview of the Forest Department. An
unorthodox choice one would think except for one small significant detail – the
opportunity to see a good number of Malabar Pied Hornbills all in one place.
Many of them nest in the larg Heddi trees (Yellow teak). On reaching here, we
found that the rains had turned the ground into a green carpet while the trees
looked lush and green. We had barely walked a kilometer when the first Hornbill
we sighted was met with a whoop of joy. These creatures are wary of people and
the moment they spot them, they try to hide in the branches or fly to a far off
tree. Not an easy thing to do, given their large and curved yellow beaks which
can be seen sticking out, however high in the tree they perch themselves. We
walked on and at one place counted ten Hornbills on a tree. Our guide said
early mornings are the best
time to spot them and it is not uncommon to see hundreds of them here. Another
creature that delighted us thoroughly was the Malabar Giant squirrel. We
followed the antics of one as it feasted on some leaves and then raced down a
tree to pick up some berries from the ground and then race back up the tree
again.

GRIN also mentions another vine Cydista aequinoctialis called Garlic

[indiantreepix:23756] Over 10,000 pictures in Discoverlife

2009-11-22 Thread Pankaj Oudhia
Dear Group Members,

Now over 10,000 pictures based on my surveys are online through
Discoverlife database.

http://pick14.pick.uga.edu/mp/20p?see=I_PAO/0103

This database is searchable through search engines. For example, if you
search Mitragyna parvifoliain Google you will find my contribution at
Discoverlife as top 2 result.

As you know I have contributed nearly 34,000 pictures to Ecoport but these
are locked and not reaching to common people. For example I have taken plus
450 pictures of different aspects of Blumea.

http://ecoport.org/ep?Plant=3744entityType=PLentityDisplayCategory=Photograph_Thumbnails

But these are not searchable through search engines.

Protest Against Ecoport to make the contributions available for world
community is on. Please see recent article written based on my bad
experience.

Global knowledge database owners must have sound mental health, at least

http://protest-against-ecoport-policy.blogspot.com/2009/11/global-knowledge-database-owners-must.html

Through this list I would like to request the world community to help me
releasing Locked knowledge in Ecoport for the benefit of all.

regards

Pankaj Oudhia

Malbar Pied hornbills favourite hont  - The  Yellow teak trees.

Local Names: Heddi, Arishina thega, Hettega)
English Yelow Tteak
Scientific: Adina cordifolia
Fam Rubiaeae

/*
 Excerpts from our travelogue.

We
followed the antics of one as it feasted on some leaves and then raced down a
tree to pick up some berries from the ground and then race back up the tree
again.

)
I can understand how much pain you must be having, having invested so much
of my time in Wikipedia over the years myself. But I feel fully satisfied to
have done some service to humanity.

 Dear Group Members,

Now over 10,000 pictures based on my surveys are online through
 Discoverlife database.

 http://pick14.pick.uga.edu/mp/20p?see=I_PAO/0103

This database is searchable through search engines. For example, if you
search Mitragyna parvifoliain Google you will find my contribution at
 Discoverlife as top 2 result.

As you know I have contributed nearly 34,000 pictures to Ecoport but these
are locked and not reaching to common people. For example I have taken plus
450 pictures of different aspects of Blumea.

 http://ecoport.org/ep?Plant=3744entityType=PLentityDisplayCategory=Photograph_Thumbnails

But these are not searchable through search engines.

Protest Against Ecoport to make the contributions available for world
community is on. Please see recent article written based on my bad
 experience.

Global knowledge database owners must have sound mental health, at least

 http://protest-against-ecoport-policy.blogspot.com/2009/11/global-knowledge-database-owners-must.html

Through this list I would like to request the world community to help me
releasing Locked knowledge in Ecoport for the benefit of all.

 regards

 Pankaj Oudhia

[Give me space, I will enrich your knowledge.]

I have been benefited a lot by her lectures as well as during the outings.

Dear members,
Dr. Swapna Prabhu has been consistently helping us in difficult Ids since she
joined in July'08.
I thank her for all the help she is extending on Indiantreepix.
She is working as Systematic Botanist at Bombay Natural History Society, Mumbai.
That itself tells a lot about her.
She has started a Course in Field Botany, along with bnhsfieldbotany e-group,
as per details:

She had her education from North-Eastern Hill University University of
Mumbai.
May I request other members, who are more familiar with her, to give more
details about her so that everybody knows better about her.

Re: [indiantreepix:23768] Dr. Swapna Prabhu- Abt Swapna with love

2009-11-22 Thread Aparna Watve
Dear All,
Sorry for this late mail! Was in transit- but it gave me time to plan
a brief note on Swapna ji!!! It is the great opportunity I have been
waiting for Thanks Garg ji for asking all to write about her. And
I see that others have already had their say.
Well, Dr. Swapna Prabhu alias Swap is the person who can irritate me
most : ) Because she is EXTREMELY talented and does not let others
know even about 10% of it.
We have known each other for all our botanical lives (starting from
MSC) and it seems like eternity. We worked together in Mahrashtra and
those were the wild times we had on field trips and her knowldege of
taxonomy and knack of building rapport with the local people are just
unparalleled!
She travelled widely in Nagaland and Arunachal for work, in the most
inaccessible places and in strangest of conditions (often on foot) and
fell irreversibly in love with the NorthEast. That's why she went to
Shillong (NEHU) university and worked for her PHD in ecology in Nokrek
biosphere reserve in gruelling conditions and life threatening
diseases. her thesis is the first major work on the area and a great
reference to have.
She has so far done field work in : Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat,
Delhi, Haryana but her major work has been in Nagaland, Arunachal
Pradesh, Meghalaya and she has travelled widely in South and Central
India (including Bihar!!). This wide experience has led to her deep
knowledge of indian vegetation ecology which very few botanists have.
In any area she travels, she can pick up any language with any accent
very fast and could speak Konyak (Naga) dialect and Nagamese after her
first trip to Nagaland. She also can converse in Khasi language.
{However she is a talented actress too, and can fool you by
confidently speaking gibberrish and passing it off as a little known
mizo dialect : ) }
I will not call her a taxonomist , as it is too restricted a term- she
is truly a BOTANIST with knowledge of taxonomy, ethnobotany,
vegetation ecology and conservation science.
Someone called her mild mannered- that is generally true, but she has
a very strong mind, which is like steel when the need arises-
We were all waiting for very long to have her in role of a teacher- as
she is excellent in it too. So am glad that so many people are
benefitting from her knowledge (-and she has enthused even someone as
lethargic as me in writing.)
As for her students, I would say that- if she scolds you for
something, you obviously deserved it!! She would never lose her
patience unless it is necessary and her criticism is always positive-
so take it in that manner and you will learn more about botany that
way.
There is so much more to write but I will stop here.
Thanks again Garg ji
Regards,
Aparna
PS: She sings very well too, so try your luck during some field trip
(Swapna- please dont kill me for this tip!)

Could this also be the same as what Garg ji has posted for ID as Aspidopteris
cordata. This was seen at the national park in Mumbai on 25 Oct '09. Request ID
for the same please. Thank you.

Re: [indiantreepix:23780] Malbar Pied hornbills favourite hont - The Yellow teak trees.

2009-11-22 Thread phil walton
*Magnificent pics, Sunita / Raghu /Sunil. I wonder why the hornbill would
favour the teak tree? Perhaps because they are shy as you mentioned and the
various teaks tend to have broad shade-providing leaves. Hornbills otherwise
require a considerable tree hollow for nesting and their diet is cheifly
fruit/nuts partuculalrly figs. Let's not be niaive in thinking they are pure
vegetarians as they do take the occasional bit of 'non-veg' particularly
while nesting, besides, every fig contains fig wasp larvae. *

*We reached Dandeli in the morning and the first place on our itinerary
was the old Timber Yard which falls under the purview of the Forest
Department. An unorthodox choice one would think except for one small
significant detail – the opportunity to see a good number of Malabar Pied
Hornbills all in one place. Many of them nest in the larg Heddi trees
(Yellow teak). On reaching here, we found that the rains had turned the
ground into a green carpet while the trees looked lush and green. We had
barely walked a kilometer when the first Hornbill we sighted was met with a
whoop of joy. These creatures are wary of people and the moment they spot
them, they try to hide in the branches or fly to a far off tree. Not an easy
thing to do, given their large and curved yellow beaks which can be seen
sticking out, however high in the tree they perch themselves. We walked on
and at one place counted ten Hornbills on a tree. Our guide said early
mornings are the best time to spot them and it is not uncommon to see
hundreds of them here. Another creature that delighted us thoroughly was the
Malabar Giant squirrel. We followed the antics of one as it feasted on some
leaves and then raced down a tree to pick up some berries from the ground
and then race back up the tree again.*

[indiantreepix:23799] Re: Request forI D 221109GAS1

2009-11-22 Thread shrikant ingalhalikar
Yes, this is Butea parviflorus Roxb. ex DC. and now Spatholobus
parviflorus (Roxb. ex DC.) O. Ktze. as per BSI flora. Locally this is
known as Palshin or sister of Palas owing to the similarity in leaves
and is very often mis-identified as Butea superba. Even the pod of S.
parviflorus resembles that of B. superba very much. I am yet to see
Butea superba in flowers in Maharashtra over my search for last 10
years, if anyone has seen pls let me know. Rgds
