Re: [efloraofindia:312135] Re: Names of Plants in India :: Fagonia schweinfurthii (L.) H.Karst.

2018-12-08 Thread Mahadeswara
I will check & let you know in a few days time. Meanwhile I will
provide the meaning of *Maddu* :
*Maddu* means *Medicine* . Some people (mostly non- kannadigas) also
write it as *Muddu * for Maddu. Nevertheless , * Muddu* means : *lovely ,
beautiful, charming* expressed especially towards lovely children
(young) .

 08-11-2015, Alibag.

This plant remained in the unidentified folder due to the poor quality
of images until I saw a similar plant in Virar last weekend (and it is
 posted separately).

Habit: trailing herb (wild), (on ground among other vegetation)
Habitat: waste land close to the beach.
Flower: pink, 1-2 cm or so,
Stipule: prominent, like an auricle, hairy
Whole plant was hairy (stem, pedicle, calyx, stipule)
Leaf: trifoliate; veins prominent on lower surface.
Fruit: very immature but is not indented at suture lines and not
 jointed.

 Please confirm or correct.

 Thanks & Regards,

 Samir Mehta

2018-12-08 Thread Samir Mehta
Thank you Jagmohan ji.

Genus Desmodium and Pycnospora are differentiated on their pods, being
jointed or not (distinctly) jointed respectively. The immature fruit seen
here does not seem jointed.

Viplav ji mentioned (same thread that has Radha's comment) in his post that
D scorpiurus is 'freely rooting at nodes' whereas here there was no rooting
at nodes.

Will communicate with Radha and ask her to comment on this thread as also
my other post labeled Pycnospora .

Samir Mehta

2018-12-08 Thread Tapas Chakrabarty
Yes, *Phyllanthus rheedei *is a good match! However, I was hesitating as
to the location and mention of its being cultivated!
The species is so far known to occur in peninsular India to Sri Lanka and
again in North-east India. I have seen a recent specimen from Bangladesh
which is not officially recorded. Beyond that, the species is not known so
far. *P. rheedei *is a herb up to 60 (-100) cm high. Saroj ji should
enlighten about the height of his plant and under which circumstances he
found this under cultivation.
