2022-08-15 Thread Plantaholic Sheila.
Interesting. Sorry to be awkward!

 Ixora casei seems rather rare.
I have never knowingly come across it.
Is it found in India?

Native distribution areas:

   - *Pacific *
  - *Southwestern Pacific*
 - Gilbert Is.
  - *Northwestern Pacific*
 - Caroline Is., Marianas, Marshall Is.

How do you know it is that one rather than the common Ixora coccinea?

*Barleria prionitis, Cissus quadrangularis, Dendrocnide sinuata, Justicia

2022-06-26 Thread Plantaholic Sheila.
This was found at Kew gardens on London .U.K.where they grow plants from
all over the world...both common and extremely rare.

Tradescantia spathacea flowers each have just 6 stamen.
This plant has so many stamen I cannot even count them.
The stamen on mystery flower are different from Tradescantia spathacea
There is no sign of any pink bract..the cradle.
No sign of any petals.
Most interesting.

2022-06-17 Thread Plantaholic Sheila.
I love Rhododendrons/Azaleasused to grow many sp, hybrids and cultivars.
Near here is the famous Cox family at Glendoick that used to collect seed /
they still hybridise them and have named many new ones
Here in UK we have many named cultivars with white flowers.
I would not even attempt an id.
Above my pay grade.
Need an expert.

[efloraofindia:424584] Re: Ms. Sheila: 1st Runner up Star Expert of May’ 2022

2022-06-02 Thread Plantaholic Sheila.
Dear sir,
Thank you.
How very kind!
I am just so embarrassed.
I feel so ignorant compared to so many others here.
But every day is a school day...I try to keep learning.

When I was younger I spent every minute creating a garden from a
wilderness.with little knowledge about plants.
It was a steep learning curve.
In 2005 I got a tiny point and shoot Canon Ixus camera.
It literally changed my life.
On my pics I was able to see details of the flowers...far more detail than
with my own eyes...very slowly I learnt .

I now have a library of 78,000 detailed plant pics on Picasa and
flickr...all labelled with Latin names so I can find them.
Many are not very pretty, they look boring just showing a stem ..to
show if leaves are opposite or alternate. The front and back of leaves.etc
They help jog my memory. Free for anyone to find/ to see./use

Now much older I can no longer spend 8 /10 hours a day gardening.
But I can sit at my computer and look at plants on the internet forums and
MAYBE help to id them.

whorls in the leaf axis. See pics.
leaves are very different.

Without a cone to verify, conifers are hard from just young shoots.

Sorry but the leaf shape looks completely wrong for Carpinus

Veins and leaf edges are different in Hornbeam.

I would have said Betula sp...a birch tree.

2022-05-27 Thread Plantaholic Sheila.
Many thanks for the help from all in this group!

Nothing ventured nothing gained.
I had the cheek to write to Kew a good while ago!
I have just received a very kind, helpful e mail...
Hurray...after 3 years I have finely got the answer...see below
It ties in perfectly with Dr Pankaj Kumar answer

.

Quote from Kew.
"Thank you for your email and I apologise for taking so long to get back to
you. I haven’t been able to get a definitive answer but one of our
scientists has said that she thinks it looks most like a Byttneria species
in the Malvaceae family.
I hope that helps!
Kind regards

Sorry but I am very familiar with Lotus corniculatus ..common name bird

Mystery plant is rather large and sprawling.
Leaf stalks long.

Wondering if it is Medicago sp...it has long leaf stalks

2022-05-25 Thread Plantaholic Sheila.
Google says lots of things.
Google can lie!
I check, check and double check.

We grow Muscari armemiacum here with many named cultivars...but Muscari
botryoides also.etc..
my knowledge doesn't know how to id one from the other.

https://www.google.com/search?q=Muscari+botryoides=firefox-b-d=ALiCzsbs2pAU_fnfUOo1eYfmohyv3NDIJg:1653478254953=lnms=isch=X=2ahUKEwiU1p7Axvr3AhWNFMAKHVDrAj4Q_AUoAXoECAIQAw=1280=595=1.5

In UK we have a famous charity called "the Woodland Trust."
I was searching for accurate images of Frangula alnus to double check my id.
On Woodland trust site 3rd pic it showed the flowers.
Sadly not of Frangula but Cornus!

https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/trees-woods-and-wildlife/british-trees/a-z-of-british-trees/alder-buckthorn/

On the screen of Frangula alnus flowers I can see Cornus, honeysuckle and
bird cherry!

Re: [itpmods:16845] Fwd: [efloraofindia:423876] MYSTERY SHRUB 23rd Feb 2022...SS

2022-05-25 Thread Plantaholic Sheila.
Thank you..I am EXTREMELY /ACUTELY aware of this.
Sadly on a cruise the landing may be just 2 hours..time is precious.
I want to see as much as possible..the landscape, scenery, the birds as
well as the new to me plants.
I never have the luxury of spending 10 mins recording each plant...nor do
I ever carry a note book.
My tiny point and shoot Canon Ixus camera is all I ever use.

I have been VERY fortunate to visit several very remote places and know I
will never get a 2nd chance to revisit.
Even if I did the chance of finding the plant again is remote.
Which is why I try to be very observant and to take images to aid with id
later.
I call it my homework...I take it very seriously.
I hate to misname any of my pictures.
Sometimes I take more pics but they are out of focus and have to be
deleted..everything is a rush on these magical holidays.

I am very aware of taking images to show details . to aid with idsuch
as alternate v opposite leaves/flowers./fruits/bark..any other features
that back in UK will help me to add an accurate name.
If plants are vines I take pics of tendrils or twisted stems.
To my very best recollection this was a free standing shrub/young tree.

My 5 images above I feel are not too bad. ..
they show alternate leaves, the shape of the leaves, the length of the
stalks, the veins, the leaf texture above and below, the fruits, the stem
, the glands.
I thought this would be so easy to get an instant id.
Many identifications can be done from a lot less.

At home it is easy..if I need more pics I can pop back to have a closer
look.

I am at heart a gardener with a passion for plants.
I try to add to my knowledge on my travels.
I do not profess to be a botanist...which is why I love forums where people
far cleverer than me give freely of their time to assist.
In turn I can often help other with identifications.
Every day is a school day!

Quote... I was thinking of *Hyptis* (on lines of *Hyptis capitata*) ... but
I think I am wrong.
The leaves look different.

Regards.
Donesh

I appreciate all help. Thank you.
Hyptis is in Lamiaceae.
I thought we had established that it cannot be in this..see several posts
above.

This mystery plant was not a soft herbaceous plant.
It was a shrub/tree .with strong woody square stems.
The round balls of seeds were quite large as were the leaves.
Apologies that there is nothing to give my pics a scale.
I was so sure it would be easy to id I only took these pics
