Dear Surajit Da.

I think the fungus on the wood is decomposing and a hyperparasitic fungus
is growing on it.

the second species as its morphology is similar to several different
species of Marasmius.

Re: [efloraofindia:163197] Hooghly - Fuligo sp. ???

2013-08-19 Thread Tanay Bose
Dear Surajit Da.

I don't think this is a species of *Fuligo*, because I don't find any
characteristics of Myxomycetes (slime mould) in your images. Rather I would
suggest Basidiomycetes. Anastomosing honeycomb gills and your observation
date reminds me of *Serpula* spp. I think this is *Serpula similis*
(Syn: *Merulius
similis*), usually seen on dead deciduous logs during the monsoon in Bengal.

It seems from the Plant List that Euploca ovalifolia is now considered as
 a synonym of Heliotropium ovalifolium.
Hence, the current accepted name of the plant is Heliotropium ovalifolium.

Re: [efloraofindia:115408] Rhoeo discolor like pot plant from Hooghly 01-05-12 SK-1

2012-05-02 Thread Tanay Bose
Hi Surajit Da.
Yes, Rhoeo discolor has two genomes indicated by α β. During the meiotic
segregation chromosomes comprising of each genomes moves towards the
opposite poles. So that, each gamete has either α or β genome, hence the
heterozygous condition (αβ) is maintained in the filial generation. It is
believed that homozygous condition (αα or ββ) in Rhoeo leads to lethal
mutation. Crossing over and synapsis do happen in the chromosomes but only
at the terminal region of the arms along a restricted part. But, the
sequential and detailed stages are not quite well understood.

Does your plant has any potential of being Laguncularia racemosa? This
medium sized mangrove
tree is widely distributed in the tropics. The plant is characterized by
thick, scaly (often reddish) bark
and extra-floral nectaries present at the base of the leaf. Looking at the
2nd photo it seems there
are nectaries present (or may be I am fascinating).

Hi All.
It was a privilege to have Raman Ji in our group. He surely has contributed
a lot for the group and wish he will
continue doing so in future. I did take time to go through his website and
was amazed to see his collection on
Bangalore trees. I really appreciate his efforts in documenting the flora
as well as his scientific approach to
organize them. I believe the website will be helpful in identifying many
common trees in Bangalore and around
India.

Thanks Garg ji and all of you.

It is my pleasure to be part of this group.
I have learnt so many things in the last year.

I have gone through Garg ji's collection on wiki many times and always
wonder how much time and effort he must have spent.

Every time I see a Senna sulphurea I remember only Gurucharan ji and his
 penchant for mite details.
I keep counting the leaflets every time I see it, to see if the pair
 count is less than 7,
but I did find on one tree it was 7.

I am awed by the collection Dinesh ji has.

Similarly I recollect every one of your suggestions.

Initially I wanted to identify only trees on the streets and the gardens.
Then I saw its worth exploring Lalbagh to look at the beautiful specimens
 there.
I am going almost every other week there, and find at least 10 new trees.
I spend walking almost 2 hours almost every day, looking at the trees at
 various stages.
It has become more an obscession for me.

I enjoy looking at the fruits turning from green to various colors,
leaves turning from various colors to green,
and the various stages of the flowers.
It has been a wonderful experience for me to look at the trees.

Hi All.
Indeed Surajit Ji has made a mammoth contribution to the group and I
believe he will continue doing so it in future.
He is quite an appreciable personality and has every quality to be used as
an example for new members. The basic
pattern of behaviour which most senior and fellow members would expect
along with the hard work are two most
important characters which I find pleasure to bring up. The most awkward
situation for me is probably his suffix of Sir
with my name. I was quite not aware of his age, members like Muthu, me and
e.tc and probably the youngest chaps
in this group, most members are nearly at the dawn of their evolution at
least I am still evolving. Hence, I will kindly
request Surajit ji to remove the suffix as all other members do.
Best wishes,

Hi Usha Di.
I should confess that I have no idea about the origin of the bulges on the

or may be due to insect infestation. I have seen insects at there larval
stage(?) take shelter inside leaves. I came
to know about this by accident. Once I saw bunch of mole
like structures on the mango leaf initially I thought them
to be fungal infection later on making section I found insects within them!

Could this be what Nidhan ji suggested as Boswellia serrata, a very wild
guess though. Perhaps two forms are growing side by side, one with
perfectly green leaves and one having leaves with reddish tinge.

Bengal have such origin, albeit with some BANGALI twist!

 Dear All
A few days back we returned from the visit to Nainital Ranikhet Kausani.
I just to share some memories with all for information.
Originally this visit was planned for Gori Valley near Munsiyari town in
Pithoragarh region of Uttarakhand. Due to unavailability of some members
and other circumstances we converted this visit to Ranikhet Kausani etc.
We started our journey on 13th april 7:00 AM in morning from Delhi in a
hired Toyota Innova SUV. During First day travel of about 360 Kms upto
Nainital, we crossed Moradabad, Gajroula, Rudrapur, Haldwani and reached
Nainital in evening at 7;15 PM. In the way we shot mainly Clerodendrum,
Erythrina, Capparis, Operculina, Ranunculus, Delphinium and few yet to
 confirm sp.

Before reaching Nainital We also visited Bhim taal and Naukuchiatal.
Noukuchiatal area was much better in terms of floristic diversity as
compared to all the places we visited during this 5 day Visit. Both these
places were more peaceful than Nainital and Ideal for peaceful vacations.
Nainital is a bit crowded city and and Stay is also costly than all other
 places we visited.

During Morning of 14th April we shot many plants like Rubus, Clematis,
Velleriana etc from the periphery road of Naini Lake. After taking
breakfast in Nainital we started our journey towards Ranikhet. In the way
to Ranikhet naturural scenery was very beautiful. In ranikhet we visited
Chaubtia Garden, a must see place having 100s of acres opf apple gardens
and also other members of the same family. finally we reached Kausani and
 stayed at Hotel Grand National.
During next day (15th April) we visited Baijnath, Bageshwer and Binsar.
However we could not visit binsar national park due to fuel and Time
problem. Binsar Park daily closes at 3:00 Pm and visitors are supposed to
came out by 7:00 PM in evening. One can also stay in Binsar in KMVN Hotel
there inside the park. The entry fee per person there in Binsar Wild life
 Park is 150 per person.
On the 16th april we went towards Chaukori via Baijnath and Bageshwer.
This place is most beautiful and smallest I think There are 3-4 hotels
only, with reasonable rates varrying from 1000 to 2500 per room, including
best stay at KMVN Hotel in 990. Himalaya is picturesque from this place.
After this we went to Thal. Thal is in the way to Munsiyari and and have a
great diversity of ferns. Thal is a junction place from where we can go to
 Munsiyari Almora Pithoragarh and Bageshwer.
In Kausani we also visited Tea Gardens and they were very beautiful.
On 17th we started backward journey from Kausani at abot 8:00 Am and
 reached Delhi at about 9:00PM.
Overall This visit was a memorable one and successful as we visited so
many places during this visit and shot more than 100 plants out of which
 many were new to me.
 Thanks

In last three years I have seen the evolution of this group.
Thanks largely to the Group of our highly refined members, Garg ji, Dinesh
