Bill,
I watched the tribute on Hal on KTLA the other night. KTLA ran the
tribute ad free too. I did record it. He will be missed. I am watching
KTLA as I type this. as much as I enjoy their news, it will not be the
same without Hal.
Besides losing Hal, we also lost Larry McCormick a couple

Bill,
Great going on your new copper pipe. In the dry areas, the more copper
in the ground the better. Sounds like you are on to a good DX season
too. After hearing choral mx o/u KBOI a bit ago, which presumed to
KLTT, and it is only mid August. I am looking forward to a good season

Hello Patrick,
As I recall during our visit to Astoria/Seaside yesterday, the TIS/HAR
stations audible at Castle Rock had completely changed compared to last
month. The 540 station, which previously had a brush fire warning, was
replaced
by a NOAA radio relay from Olympia, relating

I ran SpecLab this evening so see if I could detect the carrier of 740

beautifully, almost as if it had been switched on, at sunset in Salvador:

Waking up late, I probably missed the peak of the TP signals, but many weak

If it's a Local TIS not operated by the Government, it HAS to be one of the

A new TIS station heard on 1610, WQCA 312 City of Gresham, Or. Fair signal at

good audio, but decent signal. 18 miles away, across the Columbia river. New

Gary,
It was great meeting you and your family too! Thanks so much for the
Sony S5W. A great little radio. I have had a chance to compare it to the
Super Radio 1 and it is a hair better in many cases as the selectivity
is sharper. The Sensitivity is close to the same. In tuning in KSTP 1500

I can still hear the HAR in there, but CBXQ is playing music // 690 and
wipes out the HAR audio enough not to beable to understand it. It is a

This is at 1946 UTC.

Regarding the Castle Rock-540 TIS, I should have mentioned that the
NOAA weather (etc.) announcer was indeed female, and that the sign for this
station appeared just north of Castle Rock as we were southbound on I-5,
confirming that the location

And the same is true for wet areas. Ground conductivity is not directly
determined by wetness but rather by the materials in the soil.
Water helps dissolve conductive minerals and improve ground conductivity,

Chuck,
You are right. The ground conductivity is poor along the coast, but it
is great in the direction of the West with the ocean. Maybe that is why,
the stations to the East do not QRM as much here, plus the mountains.
I added a new 10 foot copper pipe for the receiver ground today. I

One thing I have noticed with all of the extra grounding I have done
with the EWEs, beverages, and the receivers, the noise level is less and
directivity seems to have improved overall. There are a lot of extras
with have good grounding.
