Hi John! Glad you jumped in and sorry to disappear on you, but it was a very
busy weekend and I had too much to say for email. Are you retired yet? Still in
Kingston? Send me your phone number and I will Skype you and we can catch up!

I have a simple solution: move to Seattle where the sun has not been sighted

Only if your antenna is very inefficient (e.g. car roof broadband loop or whip)
would any sensitivity advantage of the AOR 7030+, Drake R8B, or various Icom
and JRC (or for that matter Collins or Hammarlund) models over the Perseus make
any difference.
The solution is simp
Careful of your marriages, guys. It was bad enough when we DXed
only when the DX was coming in. Now we can spend the rest of our
waking hours hoovering up what we missed the first time around, in
spite of the sunshine out there and who knows what else?

Welcome to the dark side, indeed.
Those of us who live in the "middle" and especially those of us who live
in suburban neighborhoods would never see the ever-so slight sensitivity
advantage of an AOR 7030+. The AOR 7030+ and the Drake R8B have another
intangible in their favor, they just sound

Well I think I know how this is going to turn out! Congratulations Rob! And
welcome to the dark side. My AOR 7030+ and NRD 535 D/Kiwa
have scarcely been used in the 4 years or so since I got the Perseus, and I
have a great selection of portables to choose from when travelling
which also languish

An impressive list of radios Rob. Your success
on 1400 is definitely a point in favour of the SDR.

I think a fundamental stat for SDR is the ADC converter. Perseus is 14 bit.
QS1R and the new ELAD are 16 bit which provides more dynamic range.
My very basic research into ADC chips looks like they are improving, but
not that fast. Otherwise we'd be seeing radios based on 18 bit chips
with 140
ong locals than with any non-SDR I've ever used.

Hi Guys:
Well….after several years of contemplation, I finally took the Plunge and
bought myself an SDR Radio!! I may never sleep again, but I am now the proud
owner of an ELAD FDM-S2 Receiver. It arrived yesterday and after some head
scratching I was able to get it installed on a new Laptop I
