Phil,
I've been using CFLs since they first came out and overall Philips is
the best bang for the buck I've found as far as low RFI and longevity. I
have one that's 10+ years old and used daily and it's just now bebinning
to dim a bit. They do tend to get noisier as they age but even the

Sure, that¹s one type.
I wonder if it¹s worth building a database of CFL, LED and halogen
products that are known to be ‹ or not be ‹ sources of RFI. (There, I used

Tim is correct. QRM = manmade interference (i.e., dimmer switches, halogen
bulbs, power lines, etc.), QRN = natural interference (i.e., lightning
strikes). 73, Rick Dau on the road
Really ?!! I guess I learned something today. In my 50 years in the hobby
I always thought the QRN meant any kinda interference from noise and QRM
was interference from other stations.

Interesting thread. I dont care about the small stuff. However I was taught
back in the late 70's that QRM was another station interfering and QRN was
lightning, lights or anything that makes a buzz.

Just had some halogen track lights installed at the Burnt River DX site.
They're billed as LED compatible, for what that's worth, and it's also labeled
as a 2-wire track system. System is on a dimmer that never previously caused
problems when it was either off or set to full brightness. But
It's not the lights but rather the low voltage switching power supply
converting 120VAc to 12V DC. I had the same thing next door but they let me
swap them out for 120V halogens rather than the 12V ones. There really is
not much you can do with these supplies to make them quiet as the signals

I just installed my first LED bulb, a Philips 100 W equivalent. So far, no
noise. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who's tried other brands,
particularly Cree.
I also have several 100 W equivalent halogens. Fortunately they're not
producing any noise, either, but that could be because
