It wasn't as good a morning as yesterday, and I missed the Puget
Sound effect that delivered DX to Bruce around 1430UT. However the
lower band did fairly well between 1300 and 1400UT.
I realize some regulars didn't make the list here, but I've started

I meant to reply a couple weeks ago during the "KXEL petition" thread, but
since this article about WLW has now become a topic of discussion, here's my
opportunity to air out my feelings about the band and the hobby.
I guess I am one of those remaining few left who believe in AM radio.
Maybe what's interfering with WLW is an adjacent channel's IBOC ?

Hi All:
While I'm sorry to see the big stations go, they really are dinosaurs. The only
way I can get a listenable signal out of WLW anymore is to listen in the car,
and even then they will occasionally be overridden by a descending warbling

You've got the right idea. The first number is day power and the second is
night power. ND is nondirectional. DA-1 is the same pattern day and night. DA-2
is different patterns day and night. DA-3 is different patterns day, night and
critical hours. The most common directional is DA-2.

Forgive me fellow DX’ers, for I have sinned. Despite AM DXing for several years
now, I confess that I’ve never quite learned how to decipher the FCC database’s
designations for AM authorizations.

Although I think this is a shame. However, this has been going on since the
1970s where more and more stations are allowed on clear channel frequencies and
the long distance reception is getting harder and harder. This is no surprise.

The first was KXBT-1640 in Vallejo. Testing was first suspected on March 3,
1996 (20 years ago today!), the first test ID was March 9 and regular sked
began on March 19. They held a CP for 1620, but operated on this frequency
instead.
The second was KGXL in Costa
The AM band is unsuited for a number of things which various bureaucrats or
other outsiders have proposed. I think that's probably the primary reason I
don't expect it to go away very soon. I suspect that when it does, it will
simply die out naturally because of its various limitations coupled

I can't recall who the 2nd one was, but I can say for sure that the first was
KXBT-1640/1630 in Vallejo, which came on in (I THINK) Feb or March of 1996.
Format at the time was black oldies from the 60s and 70s, and the slogan was
something like "Solid Gold Soul 1640", or somesuch. KXBT was
Hi Paul,
You're probably right, and it probably was 1650. Lots of years ago, a
different location, and no references to fall back on, just questionable

Just in case you count Vallejo 1640/1630/1640 as one, the second unique one
would be KAXW/1660 in Merced.

It was another productive morning for Asian signals, with the Japanese big guns
on 594, 693, 747 and 828 once again managing very good signals in and out from
1400-1445. In addition there was a fair low-band presence of Chinese signals on

When I tried last night, about a half hour after J.D.’s tip, I heard nothing
