[IRCA] Colorado TP's (11/30)

2008-11-30 Thread CHRIS KNIGHT

Carriers on 531, 729, 738 (TP, not DU), 756, 765, 882, 999, 1134, 1143.
594 - JJ audio, poor but above threshold @ 0935
693 - Faint audio (likely Japan which was logged yesterday here)
747 - JJ. EE lang lessons 0812 //774
774 - JJ. EE lang lessons 0811 //747. Spanish news noted at 0915!!!
Alternating man and woman (also, //747). Wierd!
783 - Sounded like a bubble jammer here. Poor signal, but clear. Faded
later. Anyone else hearing this?

828 - Man in JJ heard. Weak.
873 - Threshold audio.
891 - Strong carrier. Threshold audio. Heard the last (long) time pip of the
NHK pips. Same pitch and duration. Or, maybe not? I didn't record it so not
counting the catch.

1206 - Weak audio at 0830. Strong carrier. China heard here before.

Ireland 549 also heard here last night for the first time, peaking

when my wife came along, looked over my shoulder, and pointed out
this station called Hot Country-CIMR in Monaghan, Ireland. Eureka!

Conditions were also good to the west last night... I surprised myself
by catching KNX briefly rising up over a somewhat-nulled CHOK with an
ID at 2307 EST. Only heard once before, and I never expected it to
happen with 1070 hammered from both sides by IBOC, but WTIC
cooperated by leaving theirs off last night, and KYW's hiss was
subdued somewhat by using LSB. Also noted were western indicators
such as CKLQ-880, CJGX-940, CHRB-1140 (huge!), CBK-540, and I'm
pretty sure CKWX was in the mix on 1130.

[IRCA] TP for 30 Nov from Victoria, BC

2008-11-30 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Listened from 1430 to 1545UT this morning, and if anything it was a little
poorer than yesterday. In general, there seemed to be more signal strength on
TPs at 1430 than later, but more splatter as well, so it was easier to dig out
DX later. Not much of a lift at sunrise again today, though JOUB was able to
hang in well after sunrise for its s/off at 1600UT, and HLAZ actually had a
moment of fair strength audio at 1650UT. More interesting yet, their pattern
change at 1730UT resulted in a significant boost in strength, and within a
minute, there was recognizable RR talk which faded down slowly thereafter.
This is the first time I've heard audio from HLAZ this late, and was actually
best on the 1.5m square ALA100 loop

pretty darn good audio (at least briefly):

747 JOIB; generally better this morning than usual
774 JOUB
828 JOBB
972 HLCA generally not so good today, but good peak at 1502UT
1575 VoA briefly at 1528UT

reasonable audio at times during the period (though often battling w/splash
or noise):

567 JOIK //594; neither really came up to any strength until after 1510UT
936 CC talk at 1514UT presumably Anhui
954 JOAK at 1513 w/JJ talk
1377 CNR1 offset from //5030 by a split second (noticed this on 945 also)
1566 actually most readable (though not strong) at 1650UT, other times, just
murky audio and a big carrier

not so reasonable audio, occasional words in splash or noise:

279 R. Rossii; none of the other LWBC up for much this morning
558 two stations at 1519UT; Japan/Korea?
603 w/mx //558, Korea
693 JOAB //774 at 1440; pretty strong, but the CBU splatter was stronger
837 at 1511UT; not //NHK1, possibly China?
873 JOGB //774
945 CNR1 lagging 5030 slightly
1044 likely CRI, but no parallel on SW available at this time
1134 woman talking not //972, likely JOQR
1206 rough audio, sounded like KK talk, likely CRI
1242 likely JOLF
1287 likely JOHR
1386 NHK2 syncros //774

Burbles in the splatter and noise:

612 seemed NHK1
855 North Korea under the hum //3320
981 seemed CNR1 //5030 at 1538UT
1314
1503
1512, didn't seem //NHK2, so China?

Strongish het, no audio (either undermodulated or ravaged by splatter): 864

best wishes,

Nick

[IRCA] Alberta TPs for 30 Nov

2008-11-30 Thread Nigel Pimblett
An excellent TP morning here in Alberta, with plenty of audio, and
for a change it was the high end of the band that did the best. A quick
summary of the channels with audio:

Japan 531, 558, 567, 594, 693, 702, 747, 774, 828, 873, 1053, 1071,
1134, 1179, 1242, 1332, 1386, 1422, 1593

China 639, 918, 945, 1017, 1044, 1089, 1206,1323
Russia 648
S.Korea 711, 972, 1566
Thailand 1575
unID 738, 801 (judging by the style of music, most likely Guam), 837,
864 (huge carrier but very low modulation),1305 (likely the Korean I've
had before).
On 702, though mostly Japan, it seemed to have another station in there
at times.
The highlights were hearing audio from Japan for the first time on 1332
and 1593. I've often had 1593 audio before, but it's always been
China. A great morning to finish off November.

The station here is involved heavily in the CQWW CW contest this weekend so
have not been paying attention to that part of the spectrum, so can't
comment. (there on no hets on 1566 or 1575 in either path now at 1951ut)
I'm still in shock that I actually heard something so well here that isn't
heard even better out there It's that highly conductive Prairie

Don, heard you yesterday on 14028 kc at 2254z, could not raise you.

I worked four Japanese stations, JH1OGC, JA5FDJ, JA2FJP yesterday
and JA1VND this morning, all in the 1150z - 1230Z range, all on 80 meters
(3510 to 3515 kc range) running a TS-430S barefoot (100 w output) to
an end fed random wire about 80 ft long, 45 foot high with MFJ 989C tuner.
Location is near Lakeland, central Florida. Local sunrise about 1215Z
nowadays. JA5FDJ was peaking at 589 here and apparently has some
spectacular antenna to be heard so well.

I am just cherrypicking in the contest, about 70 QSO's but got HC8N

Nick,

That's very neat, especially considering you heard them so late in a urban
setting with a modest antenna. It prompted me to check my logs for the
latest I've heard them. The latest-ever for me was 1730 UTC on Jan. 8, 2006
with a Beverage at Ocean City State Park (north of Grayland).

I was at Grayland yesterday for a quick trip to check out some new equipment
for Perseus, and noted 1566 still going strong at 1700 (heard via a PA0RDT
mini-whip antenna at 10m high).

Re: [IRCA] Strange TP/TA conditions in Manitoba

2008-11-30 Thread Neil Kazaross
What a difference being 1000km closer to Japan and using Beverages makes. I
only had my TA antennas laid out in WI but awoke early and checked for TP's
and the only thing was a very weak het from 747.

Low band TAs were quite good last night, with the most interesting being
Ireland 549 with CW and only, per they're veri -email 25 kW.

re: 1008..Canary Islands is also possible. Unfortunately I didn't note any
SER Spanairds in at that time (action was low band) so I cannot say whether
that net had a sports event.

Mid and high band only had the real regulars.

Long wave was decent here, but interesting that 189 Iceland was basically
non existant early on, but was quite nice to listen to the rock mx from them
about 0515.

Also on LW, I believe 177 Germany runs DRM til 0400 as is a mess of funny
noise, and then they have analog and can be heard after 0400.

I'd love to hear more about your Beverages...direction, length , etc height
above ground, terminated ?

Sounds like you have a superb set up and a nice rural QTH.. 73 KAZ

Re: [IRCA] the struggles of HLAZ to be heard

2008-11-30 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
We, Don, there's no salt water path to HLAZ from here for a couple of
hundred kilometers at least, but even so, your path hardly involves water at
all. But then, might there have been a Beverage involved in your reception?

Thanks to your recording, I knew what to look for... it just wasn't nearly as
loud.

Hope the contest went well.

Nick

[IRCA] ULTRALIGHT DX...2 NEW ONES at Sunset....The March to # 600 Begins!!

2008-11-30 Thread Robert Ross

Hi Guys:

After a 2 Day Drought with no New Stations heard with the ULR's..I
managed to squeak out 2 New Stations today at Sunset!!

As I continue my march toward Station # 600 on the ULR'sI find myself
needing 37 More stations...with just 31 more days to goif I want to
accomplish this feat in my First Year of Ultralight DX'ing!! I began my ULR
Career on JAN/01/2008.just after Midnight!!

In order to hear #600 by the end of DecemberI think I'm going to need a
few CHEERLEADERS from the ULR Ranks ...as I need to hear at least
1.1935 Stations Per Day.every day til the end of the year. A few
hundred stations ago..that would have been NO Problem...but as I near #
600...I am finding that it is very difficult to hear a New One EVERY DAY!!
Like I said...I just went 2 Days...with Nothing heard!!

So...when you go to bed tonight...say a Prayer for me..and if I get
real lucky and accomplish this feat.you'll know that you helped!!
HAHHAA Luckily I have 11 Days off work, Leading up to and Including
Christmas ..so hopefully I can dedicate some Sunset and Sunrise time to
some serious listening then !! I'm gonna give this a college trybut
It's gonna be tough!!

All Disney stations recently changed satellite receiver types. The newer

watch if a Disney outlet is a local pest. Too bad IBOC doesn't come in by

[IRCA] Ferrite rods for sale

2008-11-30 Thread Craig Healy
I have three ferrite rods for sale. These are from Stormwise and bought
earlier this year. They required a minimum order of six, so I did that.
Only need three, so the others are available. Brand new, never used.

These are 13.5 long and 1 diameter. Enclosed in white PVC tubing as are
most of the Stormwise rods. They are currently listed for $45 on their
site, though I spent a bit over $50 for these. Their prices dropped. I'll
sell these for $45 but ship for free.

I have tested these and they do work well. They are the 125u type suited
for MW through the lower SW bands.

891 - Strong carrier. Threshold audio. Heard the last (long) time pip of the

KBS1 pips sound the same as NHK pips to my ear, Chris, and there's a KBS1
station on this channel also...

A good bit of DX no matter what.

[IRCA] TA for 1 Dec (UTC) from Victoria, BC

2008-11-30 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Lots of weak TA carriers here this evening, and stronger ones on 765, 1017,
1134 and 1377, and was going to say no audio, but there's definitely traces
right now (0405UT) on 1134.

best wishes,

Nick

2008-11-30 Thread Steve Ratzlaff
171 is not Radio Rossii as I said before. They just started playing music,
and Radio Rossii on the other freqs is still doing just talk. I'm not sure
who 171 is, usually Morocco fades out by now.

Well, 171 is definitely still Morocco. They just changed songs to one with
Arab-type singing. It's doing very well for so late.
