Re: [IRCA] TP for 9 Jan2017 from Masset

2017-01-09 Thread Chris Kadlec
Walt, 1566 Chinese is almost surely Yanbian People's Radio //1053. In Seoul,
it's a regular at about equal strength as Pyongyang and Jeju.

Your off-air tone is NHK Radio 2. Depends when you're hearing it, but almost
surely in the 5am (local) hour -- 2000 UTC hour -- before they come on the
air for the day. I seem to have forgotten to mention that detail in my
guide, annoyingly. I can forgive myself given the billions of details to
juggle, but I believe, off the top of my head, their off-air tone comes on
at 2025 UTC until about 2050 before the music box starts at 2053 to 2059
before sign-on. Same off-air tone as everyone else in the world, like
Pyongyang, KBS, Echo of Unification, and whoever else is behind the local
stations doing that late at night. I had a tone on 1440 forever that I never
IDed. A handful of NHK 2 stations have off-air tones going at other hours
between their sign-off and sign-on, but usually only 873. Their tone serves
as a jammer to 873's North Korean signal at night, likely unofficially, but
I have a feeling it's the reason only that 500kw signal often keeps its tone
on [sometimes] whereas everyone else goes silent.

Too bad you lack recordings of the Chinese ones. As Paul knows, I can ID
10-second clips effortlessly just by the programming or sound of them
sometimes. Only so many stations get out well, and sometimes it's the 5 or
10kw ones that can be heard at 1000km regularly.

Subject: [IRCA] TP for 9 Jan2017 from Masset

A very interesting morning to say the least. Another snowfall began late
in

the night causing a continuation of our winter wonderland. Monitoring from
14:15 to, well, the Asians are still with me at noon local/20:00 UTC.
Conditions were very much enhanced to China all morning with many 2nd and
3rd tiers present. Australia also made a modest presence with 1548 very
strong at times. 1566 was interesting as for a while around 16:30 or
17:00,

a Chinese station cochanneled and sometimes replaced HLAZ. Another mystery
for me is 1 kHz steady tone heard for hours on multiple frequencies
including 1296, 1368,1584 and others. Clearly an idle transmitter but not
sure what or who. I suspect Japan as it's still there at 19:45. 1575 AFN
was very strong with local base information and numbers so should be easy
to positively ID. The phone numbers were 226-4128 and 226-7273. No
internet

so could not immediately verify. A "best" morning so far. 73, Walt

[IRCA] Alberta TPs for 9 January 2017

2017-01-09 Thread Nigel Pimblett
The blanket was back in place here in Alberta this morning. Like
yesterday, a reasonable number of DU carriers, but nearly all very weak
today. Certainly none close to audio. Actually the domestics were
down as well today - rather like someone switched on a big attenuater.

[IRCA] TP 9 Jan Victoria version

2017-01-09 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Pretty much all DU this morning, and fairly random fades to
readability. There seemed a slight lift before sunrise, but the DX
was generally pretty spread out between 1300 and 1600UT

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

612 4QR pop music 1509UT //702, man mentioning ABC 1510UT. Near
this level again at 1537UT

1566 HLAZ man in Japanese 1309UT, briefly this strong

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

702 2BL briefly this level 1358UT, man talking //612, fading as hour
approached, pips barely heard

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

the above passing through

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

576 woman talking, DU English inflection, best on west Flag 1539UT, likely 2RN
594 3WV man DU English inflection 1434UT, //612 which was barely
there at this time.

738 2NR man mumbling 1540UT //612
774 3LO man DU English inflection //612 738 1316UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter)

[IRCA] Fwd: [sdr-radio-com] Re: Front End Overload from AM Band using SDRPlay RSP-2

2017-01-09 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
An interesting take on the latest SDRPlay radio, from the sdr-radio
list. MW overload may be an issue, so be warned.

best wishes,

Nick

Gents,

I have owned the RSP2 for a week now. I've also had an RSP1 for
several months. Up to this point I've been running the RSP2 on
HDSDR only because SDR Console didn't support that hardware. I feed
them both (RSP 1 and 2) with a full size G5RV (into either the SMA
input on the RSP1 or the Hi-Z input on the RSP2). My problem is
that I am bombarded by two different 50,000 watt AM broadcast
stations less than 8 miles from my QTH. The RSP1 handles the
situation rather admirably on all but 80 meters (that's as low in
the spectrum as I'm able to go as an amateur, I don't have a 160
meter antenna) but the RSP2 is hopelessly overwhelmed across all HF
bands. The MW/FM notch filter on the RSP2 has absolutely no effect
against the AM broadcast band overload (although it is very
effective suppression against the FM broadcast band, but that's not
where my problem lies). I have ordered a Morgan Mf g. (formerly
I.C.E.) M-400X AM band filter that I'm hopeful will eliminate the
overload problem with the RSP2. That filter should arrive later this week.

In the meantime, I've found that I can attenuate the input signal
from the G5RV sufficiently to at least suppress the severe overload
condition by attaching a 30 ohm resistor across the Hi-Z input
connections shared with my G5RV. It actually works quite well,
dropping the received signal strength roughly 15db and bringing my
RSP2 HF receive performance very close to that of my RSP1. Indeed,
the Hi-Z input appears to still be amazingly sensitive in the HF
bands despite the attenuation.

Just wanted to pass along what's been working for me, as far as
getting past the front end AM band overload on the RSP2. I'm not
sure why that unit is so much more sensitive to overload than the
RSP1, except that perhaps the RSP2 is designed to be sensitive down
to 1KHz signals and the RSP1 isn't advertised to be usable nearly that low.

Mark KF5VQY

a Chinese station cochanneled and sometimes replaced HLAZ.
No internet
so could not immediately verify. A "best" morning so far. 73, Walt

Re: [IRCA] TP for 9 Jan2017 from Masset

2017-01-09 Thread R. Colin Newell
I was up at 1300utc -- same as yesterday...
Less Chinese, more Japanese...
easy Australians...
Activity from 540 through 1116 and then some noise issues.

I'd actually say the QTH is quieter with virtually no TV or Plasma TV noise
whatsoever.

Ones limited by modded ULR's but it's still fun!

Highlights - 630 ABC Australia like a local // to 612. ABC also on 702, 774,
828, etc..

[IRCA] TP for 9 Jan2017 from Masset

A very interesting morning to say the least. Another snowfall began late in
the night causing a continuation of our winter wonderland. Monitoring from
14:15 to, well, the Asians are still with me at noon local/20:00 UTC.
Conditions were very much enhanced to China all morning with many 2nd and

FYI: Andy told me some weeks ago that the Wellbrook Phased Array system is
no longer being sold.

Paul, the Wellbrook Phased Array is a nice antenna system. Here's some
links to describe.

[IRCA] Oklahoma TP DX 1/9/17

2017-01-09 Thread Richard N Allen
Listened from 1300 until about 1345 GMT, hearing only hints of signals on 612,
702, 774, 1116 and 1566 kHz. The carriers on 612 and 702 were the most
noticeable. Good DX.
