819: since you say it is Arabic, the question mark next to Egypt can be
removed. Iran is Farsi and I don't think 5 kW Sudan is more than a dream.

A further scan through last night's TA files yielded the following

DEC 1

702 unID, man talking, sounded French 0240UT, into music from
plucked stringed instrument, then more talking. Algeria is listed
as R. Coran at this time, which I suspect would not be French, but
can't think who else this might be?

783 unID man talking, some sort of Arabic singing, poor at 0111UT,
just a brief fade up.

819 Arabic vocal music, poor, 0231UT Egypt?

864 EGYPT maxed out 0227-8UT strong and clear Koran recitation.

909 woman  in recognizably British English 0203UT and also 0230UT;
fair strength, likely Five Live

1026 unID turned up at various times between 0130-0220UT, best was at
0153UT, with echoey male vocals. Iran?

1098 Arabic sounding vocal, poor 0226UT

1539 UAE? Although formally logged at 0239UT, was also noted with
man talking and Indian sounding music 0203, 0214,and 0234UT, never
more than poor strength

1575 tUAE. Fades in the buzz saw yielded male Middle Eastern
sounding vocals, poor, 0159UT and across the hour, but I think Farda
runs on Iranian time anyway. Male talk at 0130UT however was too
poor to get any ID'able material

best wishes,

Nick

[IRCA] TP 1 Dec Victoria version.

2018-12-01 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
This morning wasn't a "deer in the headlights" morning at all. More like the
deer lying down and having a good nap.

Oddly, there was a smattering of Chinese as the sun rose.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

pretty darn unlikely

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling with splash or noise):

774 JOUB briefly with Portuguese news 1432UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could
be understood by a native speaker:

828 JOBB NHK mentions by woman, website address, 1425UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music)

594 woman talking, Japanese intonation 1438UT

639 CNR1 //945, not much more than mumbling 1544UT

702 woman talking DU English intonation 1507UT

747 //828 1425UT; also noted weakly with music box s/off at 1543UT

756 man talking, DU English intonation 1428UT

891 woman talking, DU English intonation 1438UT

945 CNR1 //639 1544UT

1422 woman talking, Japanese intonation 1547UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or ravaged
by splatter)

567 693 972 1098 1566 1575 1593 seemed to be Asian;
558 603 837 846 1017 1503 seemed to be DU

Re: [IRCA] Alberta TPs for 1 December 2018

2018-12-01 Thread Nick Hall-Patch

Here also, in Victoria, conditions looked much better before about
1400UT, though it was primarily strong signals on the big guns,
rather than Chinese.

There seem to be a at least a couple of modes of propagation from
East Asia, an overnight gradual increase, then drop off in signal
strength as dawn approaches, and then a second boost near
sunrise. Sometimes, they run together, sometimes one is there and
not the other, and sometimes neither. The sunrise boost is when
more interesting DX happens usually, but, as always, anything is possible...

Unfortunately, this morning, sunrise boost just wasn't there.

best wishes,

Nick

Hi Nick,

<<< Next stop, Puyallup? Gary, I think that a
barefoot ultralight might hear it. After all,
didn't Guy Atkins hear Farda on an ultralight? >>>

Yes he did, Nick (on an SRF-39FP during supreme conditions, at Grayland in
November of 2008). Puyallup is definitely in a much lower propagation league!
As for the 1575-Iranian Jammer, I heard it at S9 in Hawaii, so I'm temporarily
satisfied. A lot of the Victoria TA's from the Middle East seem to lose their
steam once they go through U.S. border security.

How quickly the 1575 jammer became part of the landscape, eh?

Next stop, Puyallup? Gary, I think that a

It's not just limited to TAs.  A few years

Victoria city looks out over about 20-60km of
salt water along the bearings for Europe and
the Middle East.  I would have thought that
the fact that I'm 5 km or so from the water on
those bearings would negate that advantage,

feel an experiment coming on:Â we have a park

Great job with the new catches from the Middle
East, Nick! Unfortunately most of what is
being reported in Victoria seems to be held up
at the border crossing. Some threshold audio
on 864 showed up here about an hour ago, but
other than that it's just been carriers at this challenged location.

For what it's worth, I have read Nigel's impressive reports from southern
Alberta in amazement. The regularity of TPs and TAs he receives amazes me as
his location is quite far inland, as is mine. The consistency with which he
receives DUs is also noteworthy. Although living adjacent to the Rocky
Mountains possibly inhibits TP reception by blocking some of the low angle
signals, it seems that latitude may play a role as well.

cliff (a little one, I know) facing out in a TA direction...

Great job with the new catches from the Middle East, Nick!
Unfortunately most of what is being reported in Victoria seems to be
held up at the border crossing. Some threshold audio on 864 showed
up here about an hour ago, but other than that it's just been
carriers at this challenged location.

[IRCA] Yesterday's DX in Seattle

2018-12-01 Thread Bruce Portzer

I finally found the time to go through Friday's SDR files.

+++

TA reception last night was better than normal, with a few stations
providing tantalizing bits of audio:

693 & 909 - parallel British-accented mumbling 0233

864    Egypt fair at times with Koranic recitations 0235

1413    Radio Vesti, weak Russian talk & time pips 0300, weak talk at
other times

+

TP DX was also above average, with an impressive high-band enhancement
at about 1540.  Here's the highlight reel:

747        JOIB sign off 1540 fair w/NA & music box

819    DPRK, 3+1 pips, woman in Korean, then music (orchestra & female
soprano) 1400.  The carrier was cutting through KGNW splash quite well
but modulation was a bit shallow

837    CHINA, 5+1 pips ending at 1400:20, then Chinese talk, weak
signal, probably Harbin

981    CNR1 good with woman in Chinese 1520

1215    CHINA, 1500 weak 5+1 pips & woman in Chinese

1467    UNID, mostly melodic voiced female & occasional male voice,
probably from the same station 1540-1548.  Couldn't determine language.
Signal was mostly weak, occasionally fair. Not much listed, HLKN is the
most likely candidate, NHK2 had signed off.

1548    UNID, 1543-1548 weak talk in domestic splash, possibly Chinese,
mostly female

1566    HLAZ was still audible well after our 1536 UT sunrise. Noted
with Russian talk at fair level 1713, with audio level tapering off
after that.  Carrier finally dropped into the noise around 1835 (10:35
AM LT)

1593    CNR1 1546 man in Chinese fair-good during pauses in KLFE splatter

1602    NHK2 1542 faint chimes from music box after sign off

[IRCA] Alberta TPs for 1 December 2018

2018-12-01 Thread Nigel Pimblett
They decent TP conditions of yesterday did not extend into the first
morning of December.    Only the Japanese powerhouses and HLAZ made it
from Asia during the 1400-1500 listening time, joined by a few
Aussies.   4BC would have deep fades, but on peaks it was by far the
strongest overseas signal this morning. Interestingly I had
inadvertently done a ToH recording at 1100 and the Japanese signals were
much stronger then.   Perhaps a solar hiccup sometime between 1100 and 1400?

612 4QR    Brsibane, AUSTRALIA  Traces of woman talking at 1459,
then ABC news fanfare

792   4RN    Brisbane, AUSTRALIA     Weak, with talk by woman at 1457,
//1512

1116    4BC    Brisbane, AUSTRALIA  Ad string at 1427, then back
into "Overnight" program

1512    2RN    Newcastle, AUSTRALIA    Talk by a woman at 1457, //792.

1548    4QD    Emerald, AUSTRALIA    End of country song at 1455, then
talk by man.  Presumably Saturday Night Country pgm.

1566    HLAZ    Jeju, S.KOREA    Traces of talk at 1437.  A far cry from
yesterday.

Plus the regular Japanese on 594, 693, 747, 774, 828 (at uninspiring levels)

I'll be interested to hear what other Japanese you log from the files
Tim. Your path from JOGB I believe is just inside the auroral oval

do in comparison? Their paths might be a little deeper into the auroral oval.

Re: [IRCA] Michigan TPs, Dec. 1, 2018

2018-12-01 Thread Nick Hall-Patch

This is really interesting. Last night, in Victoria, BC, probably
the best TA (trans-Arctic in this case) conditions in years collapsed
about 0330UT, and this morning's sunrise TP conditions here were
ridiculously poor, yet Colin noted the Iranian jammer this morning (I
didn't even look for it on the north Flag, hi).

When I changed over to the north Flag about 1540UT, China was just
audible on 639 and 945, and 747's carrier faded up to good strength.

best wishes,

Nick

2018-12-01 Thread Tim Tromp
About 30 mins before local sunrise now and I have weak TP audio all over
the band, but it's a struggle trying to ID anything as I'm not familiar
with the languages or these stations. Checking for parallels on the Kiwi
SDR network helps, if you're confidant of what you're hearing there.
