[IRCA] TP 11 Mar Victoria version.

2019-03-11 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Well, they were predicting a geomagnetic upset. But, not yet. Still pretty
lively this morning.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

774 JOUB 1422UT

1575 VoA powering in at 1439UT with man in  Burmese per announcement at 1430UT;
exactly the same as yesterday

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling with splash or noise):

567 JOIK //594 1436UT

594 JOAK 1417UT

774 JOIB 1405UT

972 HLCA 1430UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could
be understood by a native speaker:

603 HLSA ballad 1431UT, along with another station; ID'd a couple of minutes
earlier //558

1548 4QD man talking to another man on phone, DU English, 1432UT. Still pretty
good on north Flag; high angle of arrival?

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music)

531 JOQG woman talking //594 1427UT

558 HLQH //603, usual ballads 1427UT

612 JOLK looking for parallel for 1548, instead, man talking //594 1432UT

621 woman talking, Chinese intonation 1407UT; brief visitor, then gone

639 CNR1 woman //6175 1436UT

657 N. Korea with orchestral music and woman operatizing, 1420UT; only up for a
couple of minutes, but grabbed //3320

666 JOBK man talking //594 1438UT; hum on channel also.

945 CNR1 //639, woman talking 1424UT

1098 CNR1 //1593 1425-6UT, woman and man

1242 woman talking Japanese intonation 1426UT

1287 woman talking, Japanese intonation 1419UT

1422 man talking, insistent sounding Japanese? 1433UT

1503 JOUK music //594 1435UT

1557 man talking, Chinese intonation 1434UT

1566 man talking Chinese intonation 1429UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or ravaged
by splatter)

 693 702 711 729 738 864 828 837 918 1206 1323 1386 1494 1539 seemed to be
Asian;

1611 seemed to be DU

best wishes,

Nick

Thanks for the reply on this Rick. I did a bit of nosing around also, and
used the Icechat client to check into Starchat. Trying #mwdx yielded:
"this channel has been forbidden: CLOSED", so that is history, apparently.
Pity, as I think some sort of archive existed as well?

I've been timed out and reconnected so many times on chanops.org, it's made my
head spin. So THAT option was a no-go, as well.

I'm testing a PHP/MySQL Chat system over at https://dxer.ca/blab/

The downside of Facebook is that you have to be a member of Facebook
and that means giving up almost every last gribble of personal information
you have --
and it isn't truly live nor is it a chat channel...

The system I have installed can any number of channels on it all dedicated
to any aspect of the
hobby and any geographical location.

If it catches on, great - if it doesn't, no big - it only took 15 minutes
to set it up.

I like it. Clean and simple and real time and no ads. Call me
old-fashioned, but I think we've given up a lot of that old-time
simplicity and privacy for the "flashy" modern look of Facebook and all
the rest. From the looks of it, there is literally nothing that could
break or go wrong, unless the server crashes. And you don't have to have
a fast PC, or be using the latest browser, etc, etc, etc.

I just commented there about a new station I just logged on 640 kHz.
Condx here in N. Indiana are good to the deep south.

Thanks for setting it up, Colin!

Re: [IRCA] Live DX spotter / chat system *show of hands*

2019-03-11 Thread Rick Dau
Nick, I can answer that. During MW DX seasons about 5 or 6 years ago, I was a
regular -- almost nightly -- visitor to the #mwdx room on Starchat.net. About
2 years ago, I attempted to get back onto it, and was unsuccessful, as was
Shawn Axelrod in Winnipeg (I think it was due to Starchat being powered by
Java, which was having some sort of security issue at the time). Just for
grins and giggles, I tried again this evening, and could not even get past
Starchat.net's homepage. When I typed "mwdx" in the search page, it wasn't
recognized as a room. So Starchat.net isn't an option anymore, at least not
for me.

A couple years ago, I found librairc.net/chat, and was able to get #mwdx going
as a room there. I did let a few folks know about it, and some, like Shawn and
longtime IRCA member Tom Laskowski in South Bend, Indiana, were able to find
their way onto it. Others could not, so I gave up pursuing it.

Tonight, however, I have found something that I think will pass muster. One
simply goes to librairc.net's sister page, http://www.chanops.org. Once there,
you'll see a homepage with a pair of fields -- one for a nickname and one for a
channel to go to -- under "Think of a nickname..." Type in a nickname that you
want to use, and you do NOT have to click the box underneath that says "I have
a password". Then go down to the Channel field, type in #mwdx, and click on
the Start button. THAT should get you in.
And the best part isno registration required!

Frankly, I prefer the idea of a stand-alone server and URL that was originally
proposed. Nothing to sign up for, no ads, no people from high school, etc.

Re: [IRCA] Live DX spotter / chat system *show of hands*

2019-03-11 Thread R. Colin Newell

First rule is to see what's already available.

bcblog had its last submission less than two hours ago.

Does anyone know what happened to #mwdx?

Even ye olde DXFishbarrel can
help  http://www3.telus.net/public/shallpat/test/display.htm
Obviously most relevance to the northwest DXer, but if the thing is
lit up like a Christmas tree in the evening, checking for TAs
anywhere in America might be productive, and if it's lit up at your
local sunrise, it may mean that conditions are good overall, and that
switching on the radio would not be amiss.

best wishes,

Nick

Re: [IRCA] Live DX spotter / chat system *show of hands*

2019-03-11 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
That is why I wondered if #mwdx chat was still functional
somewhere. It's years since I used it, but I remember it being
entertaining and helpful for trading real time TA tips across the
continent when there was an openingbut that was during the last
sunspot minimum.

Regarded as being old stuff now? Certainly my software for it is
rather out of date, and nothing seems to work.

best wishes,

Nick

Last week someone posted a "wouldn't it be great if we had a
live DX spotter chat window web site 100% dedicated to SWBCing
and/or MW DXing ?"

You know, a place where you could quickly sign in and post an alert that
you're hearing HCJB on 9560 khz or Voice of the Voyager on 6160 khz...
or there is a great TA opening to the West Coast...

Show of hands: Who would use a system like this?

I have some free server space and some ideas about domain names that could
be fun...

Anyway... hands!?

2019-03-11 Thread Stephen Hawkins

Collin,

It was a question I asked.   I got several replies and some good info.
They helped but so far I have not found what I was looking for.  I don't
think such a thing for AMBCB DXing or SWL exists. I'm all for it.

I'd love to hear / see your ideas.  As a Ham I use
http://www.dxsummit.fi/#/ and a telnet based one called dxspots.com

I like these two because I can filter what spots I see or don't see.  I
frequently have both of them up filtered different ways.

The 18650 battery used in the 808 is available at Walmart, Amazon and a zillion

They are the standard for higher power lithium batteries and are used in most

First rule is to see what's already available.

bcblog had its last submission less than two hours ago.

Does anyone know what happened to #mwdx?

Even ye olde DXFishbarrel can
help http://www3.telus.net/public/shallpat/test/display.htm
Obviously most relevance to the northwest DXer, but if the thing is
lit up like a Christmas tree in the evening, checking for TAs
anywhere in America might be productive, and if it's lit up at your
local sunrise, it may mean that conditions are good overall, and that
switching on the radio would not be amiss.

best wishes,

Wouldn't you have a better chance at audio using your 7300 as I'd expect it
has better filters? A couple years ago, Tim Tromp showed that 4QD could be
had In the Midwest in March on occasion. I first logged them 2 years ago in
March. They suffer from a lot of slop here in IL at sunrise. I had them a
couple times in the really good DU cx we had late Sept into Oct. 73 KAZ

Re: [IRCA] XHDATA D-808

2019-03-11 Thread Jim B
Glad you like the XHDATA D-808 Mike. I recently brought one on vacation to
Dunedin FL and I logged about 225 stations in 5 weeks. The farthest was
CFAC 960, in Calgary Alberta. I find the sound at 3 khz AM mode is
excellent for DXing.Jim, back home in the snow
