Re: [IRCA] Iceland 189 heard in Oklahoma.
Gary: I tuned to 189 kHz at 0715 GMT and was surprised to hear a man and woman talking in Icelandic. The single finally faded out at 0815. I never figured I'd ever hear Iceland after trying for several decades. The PL-360 with refinements such as your antenna is an amazing ultralight radio. I only wish it had tighter selectivity allowing for reception of split frequencies, and audio quality like the little Sonys. JOUB faded in on my barefoot PL-310 at 0857. This morning was nowhere as good as yesterday. Only JOIB, JOUB and 1053 jamming station were audible. JOUB was first heard on a barefoot PL-310 at 0857 and didn't fade out until 1253 (LSR at 1248). There was a strong het, but no audio, on 972 kHz. Also traces of signals at times on 1134 and 1287. Receivers: PL-310, barefoot and with 7.5-inch ferrite rod. At 0946-0954, I heard barely audible music on 279 kHz with QRM from beacon "SRE", Seminole OK. I assume it was Radio Rossii, heard with PL-360 with 7.5-inch ferrite rod. Good DX. Richard. Re: [IRCA] Oklahoma TP DX 10/26/13
Gary: I have no idea what I was hearing on 279 kHz. There was barely audible music briefly under the signal of the NDB "SRE", Seminole OK, on the same frequency. I use to hear the Far East long wave transmitters here in the 1980’s, but I haven't listened for them since. I was surprised to see Mongolia didn't move from 164 to 162 kHz when the frequency was realigned 30 some years ago. It's still on the original wavelength. Of course it makes no difference in that part of the world. The Icelandic on 189 kHz at 3495 miles is the nearest to me. I need to reconnect the recorder to my ULR so I can review some of what I'm hearing. I had a TA on 153 a couple night back and didn't recognize the language. Sadly I made no recording. Again, this morning I was hearing something on 1053 mixing with the jammer after sunrise. I have a feeling the sun is about to throw something our way soon. Have a good day. Richard. Re: [IRCA] Four new ULR stations, 4/3/14 & 4/4/14
Mike: The DT-400W receiver's primary drawback is its price. I notice retailers now list it for $69.95. I've owned mine since 2008 and pay less then. Like most of the smaller ultralight receivers, selectivity is occasionally a problem when you tuned to a weak signal adjacent to a stronger one. It isn't as noticeable at night as in the daytime. Some DX-ers have improve it's selectivity by removing the stock filter and carefully replacing it with a LTM450HT filter. It works very well when coupled with a 7-inch FSL antenna. I'm presently hearing 540 KWMT, Ft. Dodge IA (5 kW @ 734 km/456 mi) on the DT-400W with the FSL. It isn't here audible without it. There is some 550 KFRM slop, and slight co-channel QRM from KDFT. I will admit KWMT is more listenable (100% readable) on a smaller, but more expensive Sony SRF-T615 (with the FSL), with less KFRM QRM. The SRF-T615 is the best of all truly ultralight radio sets. Most of the stations I've logged were with a barefoot T615, including JOAB, JOAK, JOBB, JOBK, and JOUB, as well as 1215 Absolute Radio. The very selective Tecsun DSL receivers weren't yet available. I now use a PL-310 or -606 for trans-oceanic DX. Good DX. Richard. [IRCA] Fun DX-ing with SRF-59 ULR.
This morning I thought it would be fun to return to my Ultralight Radio roots and DX using a Sony SRF-59. The particular receiver is as purchased sometime ago at K-mart. Stations heard: 730-XEX, México DF (100 kW @ 1904 km/1183 mi). Música y desporte con "doh-bleh OO" (W) ID's at 0942-1016 GMT. Fair-to-good strength. 750-XETI, Tempoal VC (10 kW @ 1653 km/1027 mi). Música at 1048. Fair signal. First heard on a SRF-59 in 2008. 760-XEABC, San Sebastan Chimalpa EM (5kW @ 1895 km/1177 mi). Noticias (mujer) at 1100; música at 1104; ID "ABC Radio" at 1118. Good signal. 770-XEANT, Tancanhultz SL (10 kW @ 1649 km/1024 mi). Música y nuncios at 1120-1143. ID "XEANT" at 1131. Good strength with unID XE QRM, probably XEACH, from 1136. 1080-KSLL, Price UT (10 kW @ 1220 km/758 mi). Heard with Rock music over/under KRLD (50 kW at 395 km/245 mi) from 1254 until fade out at 1326 (LSR @ 1208). ID "Rockin the Kastle Valley". Heard with aid of seven-inch FSL. Unlike other SRF-59's I own, this particular one has a fairly accurate AM frequency scale. Like all, the tuning knob is very stiff and tricky to tune. I'll never understand why Sony didn't allow more room for turning the knob, like the earlier SRF-39FP. By shaving some of the plastic away on the case (with an xacto knife and small file), you can the tuning knob more accessible and easier to turn. Without that modification, one must learn how to fine tune the receiver with their thumbnail. Overall, the SRF-59 is a good little DX receiver despite the drawback of the poor access to the tuning knob. I recommend it anyone DX-ing on a tight budget. And, it works very well with a FSL antenna. Right now, at 10:30 am LT, I'm listening to a fair signal from 770-KAAM, Garland TX (10kW @ 381 km/237 mi) on the SRF-59 and the FSL. Good DX. I managed to added another new station to my ULR medium wave log on 4/13/14. 1060 kHz CKMX, Calgary AB (50 kW @ 2077 km/1290 mi). It was heard at 1105 UTC identifying as "The All New Funny 1060", followed by a comedy skit by Joan Rivers before fading out under KIJN, Farwell TX. Heard again at 1125 with several advertisements including one for Calgary retailer Furniture Extreme. ULR MW station #1038 (barefoot #1025). Receiver: barefoot Sony SRF-T615. Good DX. [IRCA] UnID. 1530 kHz
Last night, I heard classical music (orchestral, operatic and choral) on 1580 kHz at 0342 UTC. It continued until 1109 UTC when it faded under WCKY. The signal peaked to fair strength at times. In WCKY's null there was QRM from KQNK until 0500, then XEUS for a time, and later KCMN. the signal was coming from approximately 170°/350° at my location (36°22'51"N, 97°26'35" W). Does anyone have an idea about what station it might have been? There never was an ID or any announcement. Thank you for your help. Richard Allen, near Perry OK USA. There were plenty of heterodynes to be heard from the southwest on the 9 kHz splits this morning. As is usual here, the strongest were on 612 and 702. At 1257 GMT (LSR) a woman, sounding much like the ABC’s Sarah McDonald, was heard talking on 702 kHz. Unfortunately I was listening on the speaker instead of headphones and the signal was unreadable. However, this morning (10-25) there was a trace of signal from about 250° on 774 kHz at 1243 GMT (LSR @ 1247). Possibly it was from 3LO, Melbourne NSW. Also, I was able to log XECAQ, Puerto Morelos QR, México, on 740 kHz. It was heard on a SRF-T615 at 1059-1120 GMT, at times with a good signal, parallel the internet feed. Or, the lack of. It was primarily a Mexican morning here. Only a few weak hets from across the Pacific, and nothing from Asia. The strongest het at sunrise was on 702 kHz, but any chance of audio was blocked by KHSE and an unID XE. There was a het on 612 kHz smoothered by KCSP and XEGS. A faint trace on 738 kHz was buried under CFZM and KRMG, even an unID XE after Toronto sunrise. A weak carrier heard on 1098, with unID XE QRM. Richard Allen, near Perry OK USA. Niel: Your report makes me wish I'd stayed with 612 kHz until sunrise. I bailed out too early. Richard. Not hearing much elsewhere, I concentrated on 1098 kHz hearing bits of audio from 1207 until past the 1226 sunrise. Because I'm attending a game at my alma mater, Okla. State Univ., I will have to wait until afterward to run my recording through Audacity to check if it was indeed V7AB. The PL-380 meter frequently indicated 2 to 6 dB, so there was something there. Re: [IRCA] Oklahoma TP DX 10/1/16
I listened to the recordings several and cannot determine whether I heard V7AB 1198 or not. I have no idea about the stations programming at 1200-1230 UTC on Saturday. There was a man talking using some English words, but I couldn't make out an accent. When I worked for the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission I would occasionally talk to Marshall Islanders living in Enid. Yes, the city has a community of Marshall Islanders in residence. First, I wish to thank Neil and Nick for their help with 1098 kHz yesterday. Today it was a DU morning with hets on 612, 702 and 1098 kHz. But the big catch here was 3LO-774, Sydney, Victoria. It was heard from 1217 until 1235 GMT with ABC Sunday Night and the familiar voice of John Cleary //Radio Australia-9580. The signal was barely audible peaking to poor at 1227 (LSR), finally fading away at 1235. Only the second Australian MW station logged here. Good DX.
