[IRCA] WMAL 630 off?

2018-01-08 Thread Saul Chernos
Someone in northern VA posted WMAL was off, they were getting WLAP KY, earlier
this eve.

CFCO is way dominant on my south antenna, a mix of CFCO and WPRO RI in car en
route up. My WSW antenna is 3/4 installed, it's after midnight, foot-plus of
snow on ground...but curious to see if I can pull in something if the outage is
still ongoing...

[IRCA] ATTN JAMES NIVEN etc re 1510 unID

2017-12-11 Thread Saul Chernos
James,

Cleaning out my 5,000-messages here. Been meaning to track down your e-mail,
which prompted me to sit on 1510.

I'm betting it's what I am hearing almost regularly here ever since I started
looking in late November...

1510 XEQI MEX Monterrey — 0122 — Classical music, possibly Dvorak, and sharp
violin, and softspoken Spanish male //webstream. Opus ID. NEW in late November
but a regular it seems... just last night was strong. Sometimes it's classical
music (orchestral etc), othertimes operatic / vocal. SC-BR

Re: [IRCA] WBZ rollbacks

2017-11-19 Thread Saul Chernos
Actually, a US station online via iHeart means NOT available online - from
Canada. Just a few scant miles north of Warren Pa, WBZ would appear to not be
available online. Now, I would happily be proven wrong - can anyone point me to
a way where, for free, my Canadian computer could mimic a US-based computer to
effectively produce a US-based IP address?

[IRCA] Trumpets on 900, other Spanish unIDs

2017-11-09 Thread Saul Chernos
900 Oct 27 at 2257 EDT: 900 A has possible ID in Spanish on my south antenna.
Could be Cuba, Mexico, Domestic... 900 B has more Spanish and gets intriguing as
it goes along – trumpet or other horn sounds repeating loop-like over and over.
900 C has more trumpets. The trumpets / horns, in particular, puzzle me. Has
anyone heard or seen this reported?

900 Oct 16 at 0725 — Possibly Mexico but could be domestic US. Might hear Radio
Luz at about 12 seconds of 900 D.

Both at: http://forums.wtfda.org/showthread.php?11652

Other Spanish-language unIDs that are proving vexing are posted at:

http://forums.wtfda.org/showthread.php?11651

Any comments are appreciated, with thanks..

[IRCA] Question re ELAD FDM S2 and Macbook

2017-11-06 Thread Saul Chernos
I've settled on the ELAD FDM-S2 SDR. I've decided not to wait any longer for the
S3 mainly because I anticipate it will be expensive, and I'm happy to capture a
good-size segment of the FM band rather than the whole thing. The S2 is tried
and proven by quite a few of you, and I'm good with that.

That said, I want to use my current work Macbook Pro for this. And buy a new
Macbook for work and personal use. Problem is, I have not heard of anyone
running the ELAD FDM-S2 on the Mac platform.

ELAD tells me, somewhat cryptically, that "You can try to install a virtual
machine under Mac Osx, example Bootcamp or Vmware fusion and download a sample
of our software to give it try. Please let me know if that will work."

This isn't entirely convincing - I am not terribly computer-savvy and am not
sure from their wording to me if they are 100% certain it will work. I hate to
buy another computer if it won't do the job. As a last resort I would buy a PC.
Perhaps, in that case, a lower-end PC.

Any advice? is there anyone out there that has successfully and easily hooked
the ELAD FDM S2 to a Macbook?

2017-10-28 Thread Saul Chernos
640 WMFN IL Peotone is on the air and logged here at Burnt River ON Saturday
morning at 0060. Thanks to Tom's alert below. Calls heard, 80s pop, some other
content on audio I will decipher later. Hard to hear under CFMJ Richmond Hill
(Toronto). They're 139 air miles apart – Zeeland being well up along lake MI and
Petone being south of Chicago. So logging this as a fully new station.

Aw, yeah, I know there's no risk of muggings in Warren Pa. Heck, I spent a week

There's also no real risk of polar bears in the areas where I think Paul was in

anyhow, still working thru clips. Really appreciate that post!

[IRCA] Cuba 770 Update

2017-01-17 Thread Saul Chernos
770 Cuba Update:
Have been hearing Rebelde fading in and out and mixing with various stations,
including another possible Cuban (presumed to be Artemisa but no definitive ID
pending a review of one section of recording that might have contained
something).
So I am convinced Rebelde is still on. Usually it's the top dog from the south,
when WABC can be forced into submission. I'd say RCN Colombia and the two Cubans
are now about equal, and I heard Mexico a few nights ago with an anthem and
possible sign-off at 2012-2015.
The only other Cuban of note tonight is getting a definitive bit of Rebelde on
1140. Until now the only Cuban I've had on 1140 has been Surco. I have three
known transmitters to choose from on 1140, so it goes in my log as Synchro.
Conditions decidedly south tonight after logging KKOB NM on 770 before its local
sunset.

I think we have a new station or a change on 770 in Cuba.

On Jan 7 the BCB Logger carried the following report from Mark, a DXer in
Indiana:

Jan07 23:08 770 Cuba presumed. Blasting in like a local. ID something like
“Radio Arbenita”; no “Rebelde” hrd. but “de la revolucion” hrd several times. --
Mark in IN (74.118.118.170)

For the last few days, with 780 WBBM's IBOC off, I've been putting time in on
770 to the west and southwest. Aside from logging CHQR Calgary as new, and
hearing a Mexican anthem one evening at 2012-2015 EST, I am hearing a station
that sounds vaguely Cuban. Interestingly, I have not heard anything //Rebelde
670/710/5025 (my three Rebelde beacons). But I nhad a Cuban anthem last night
leading up to EST.

So there is a Cuban on 770, and it doesn't appear to be Rebelde. MWLIST lists
just one station in Cuba on 770, and that's Rebelde in Victoria de las Tunas.
Rebelde has been the easiest latin to get here until now. But it has been all
but absent the last few days, and whatever has replaced it doesn't seem quite as
strong, though we're talking marginal difference here and it could be
conditions.

I've put assorted clips on WTFDA Forums. You have to scroll down to one of my
follow-up posts to three clips of the Mexican from when I heard that anthem, and
then further down there's three clips of the Cuban I heard prior to midnight (my
local time) last night.

2016-12-30 Thread Saul Chernos
--30-- is how journalists indicate the end of a story. PR people often end news
releases the same way. It's pretty old school in itself. I've heard it has roots
in telegraphic shorthand to signify the end of a transmission in the American
Civil War era.

Keep at it Rob, you're gaining exponentially on us old-schoolers with your
SDR...

Tim is in west Michigan, so is WBCH (Hastings, 1220). What's the story there,
Tim? I have not heard it either. It's on my target list. Rob, have you? I'm
curious.

Mind you, I never heard 600 CBC LPRT in Bancroft ON before it moved to FM
earlier this year. But I'm told the station was inaudible beyond the town
limits. (I have heard 40-watt CBC LPRTs from farther away).

For NL: 740 sometimes audible u/CBL here... Also CBC on 540, 640, 990 though no

Re: [IRCA] #2000 logged from Michigan

2016-12-28 Thread Saul Chernos
1150 is indeed one good option for DE. 1410 also can get out, Tim, and you don't
have CKSL London ON in the way anymore there. DE 1330 also can do well in
semi-auroral cx here. Others heard are on 900, 1280, 1290, 1450, 1600. I'm about
500 miles out, so not that far. You're on the west side of MI, and from the ease
you get my targets from out west, and TPs (I have none here save hets), I can
well imagine you'll find DE a challenge. What have you heard from RI? What about
the Cdn provinces?

Congrats on your milestone, and in fairly short order to boot!

[IRCA] SDRs and Windows (was Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 11-30)

2016-11-30 Thread Saul Chernos

While on topic of SDRs, I want to get in the game for AM and FM. What's holding me back is a decision about a computer. I want to dedicate a laptop to this (so it can be used when I'm working, and also with a view to it being an emergency backup for me at my Burnt River ON DX site in the event my work computer ever has issues).
I used to use a PC but switched to Mac (PacBook Pro) a few years ago and am much happier with it. I hate to buy a PC at this juncture. So a few questions:
  1) Is there anything really hot coming down the pipe in the next month or two that I should wait for?
  2) What am I best to get in way of an SDR that would work with Masc?
  3) If Mac is less advisable, will said SDR work off Windows for Mac?

Wayne, thanks for your comments on my 1090 unID - I had a feeling it wasn't KMXA CO, which comes in from time to time. So I really appreciate your letting me know. I suspect Mexico. I'm not sure if these clips offer enough to determine which one.

Some unIDs - I'm hoping someone will have better ears than mine. Audio clips all posted online as MP3 at WTFDA Forums (precise links below):
1) 890: "The all new 890..."
2) 1150 oldies and jingle that I think is WEAQ.
Both at:   http://forums.wtfda.org/showthread.php?11085

3) 1230 — I hear what sounds like 103.5 in ID, then an announcement to call Russ on sales team at number sounding like 352-8016/8060. I am thinking this *might* be WSOK Savannah GA, which has a 103.5 relay – 1290 Savannah was strong at the time.
4) 960 — ABC News, then a national ad for Village Hearth Bagel, then promo for show with host name sounding like Dave Rownick / Ronette weekdays 3-6. Does this sound familiar to any of you? Then local weather via Weatherology with Derek Heit, then into or promoting Michael Savage.
Both at:  http://forums.wtfda.org/showthread.php?11060

5) Do either of these two Spanish clips sound like KMXA in Aurora CO? It's either that or a Mexican station.
At: http://forums.wtfda.org/showthread.php?11076
Any leads are greatly appreciated!

The unID is WFED, which carries American University, Navy and George Washington

This one was American University against Lafayette. AU are the Eagles and have

[IRCA] Burnt River ON unIDs

2016-02-03 Thread Saul Chernos
A few US-based unIDs, with clips posted at WTFDA Forums at:

http://forums.wtfda.org/showthread.php?10609
1140 - I don't see wasting bandwidth with an audio clip, but I had NBC Sports
Radio on Tuesday January 26 at 0753 EST. Nothing is coming up in a search or on
a list.
Now for clips:
820 - Two clips from Jan 22: The one labelled RockinRadio has a slogan sounding
like that. Interestingly, it also had the Suicide is Painless theme song from
MASH prior to the segment offered on this clip. Underneath a comedy channel
(CHAM ON) and with the EWTN in Columbus poking through occasionally. I am
guessing Jasper TN. I have a second clip also on 820 immediately subsequent
mentioning what sounds like SomethingSeaver.com. I'm hoping someone can make
sense out of either of these clips.
1490 - NewsTalk1490 WDF-AM (or so it sounds like, to me) on Jan 21 sunrise.
1340 - Calls sounding like WVLZ on Jan 19 sunrise.
1150 - With a "Greatest Hits" slogan. There might be more to it, curious if
anyone can dig more out than this. From Jan 19 sunset.
Any leads are appreciated, with thanks,
Saul ChernosBurnt River ON

Thanks, Tim. I have no idea who the screecher is, but can a 250-watt FL station
be doing this so widely up this far north? I know it comes in with Au cx.
But. ...

Subject: Re: [IRCA] Polar Night?

I saw the "heads up" about polar propagation and fired off a capture at 0400
UTC.

Live DXing right ahead of that just showed rather ordinary TA DX strengths.
What was stronger than I expected was Nigeria on 917 - actually producing some
audio, and better than presumed Spain on 918.

I would be surprised if a 910 station from Alaska could compete with UK 909 in
most of western Europe, though north of the Arctic Circle Scandinavian
DXpedition sites are really their own "animal", especially during the times of
year where the sun barely peaks over the horizon.

One reason that northern Canada and Alaska stations are reported in Europe
without a corresponding amount of Europeans being heard in western North
America could be that most of the big really northern European stations are
gone. We don't have Norway 1314, Sweden 1179, Finland 963, and several of the
big Russians. Those would be the easiest Euro's to shoot over the pole into
AK, BC, AB, WA, etc. Mostly we're left with the Brits such as 1215. Those are
a bit less likely to make it up to the auroral "doughnut hole" without a bounce
in the more absorptive auroral oval.

160-meter ham observations may or may not be useful. If there's a killer
opening between Finland and Alberta, but Finland has no broadcast stations, the
DXer in Alberta isn't going to have such great luck, especially if stations a
bit farther south don't make it to the "doughnut hole" well. Those would be
mostly UK nowadays since there's next to nothing from Netherlands, Germany,
Denmark, Poland, France, Switzerland, Austria, etc. - countries that each used
to have at least one "loudenboomer".

As far as KBRW 680 ever getting here to MA, the chances are "nil to zip". Even
if it was a DX test with code and sweep tones or the station drifted a kHz or
so off channel, it would have to battle through WRKO, WAPA, Colombia, Cuba,
Venezuela, WPTF, WCBM, CFTR, Brazil, and probably some others. Norway,
although on the other side of the "pond", can take advantage of lengthy polar
darkness and the "doughnut hole" as well as much greater separation from
interferers that are breathing down our neck on this end.

[IRCA] Correction: 1140 WRLV Salyerville KY, not WLOD TN, on late

2016-01-18 Thread Saul Chernos
It's country, not oldies per listings. But managed to listen carefully to
calls. It was tough but my TOH ID mentioned 106.5 which matches WRLV, and QTH
sounding like Salyerville. I'm 100% satisfied with the log's accuracy, but
would have preferred WLOD as it's needed here. Regardless, it shouldn't be on

[IRCA] Audacity audio problem - resolved (thank you)

2015-12-25 Thread Saul Chernos
I received a variety of suggestions, toyed around with things, and while I am
not sure what worked in the end things seem OK now. I am not familiar enough
with the technical end of things, so just tinkered around at random with
suggestions made. It's possible I was working with one or two recordings that
were not good. I have a ton of catches that are sitting on longer files so I
can now get to trimming the fat and making logging-specific files.
Thanks, everyone -- appreciate the significant amount of input received.

[IRCA] RE 1140 Cuba - Surco

2015-12-23 Thread Saul Chernos
Hi Mark,
I'm sure WRVA is OK in its primary coverage, or at least one would think it
would be.
Thanks for the list with parallels. Last few nights would have been great for
you at the seafront.

Actually, besides Radio Surco, there are 5 other Cubans on 1140!

R. Bayamo, Media Luna // 1150 & 1620

R. Cadena Agramonte, Camaguey // 910

R. Mayabeque, La Salud // 1040

R. Musical Nacional, Santa Clara // 590

R. Rebelde synchros // 670, 1180, 5025 and a gaggle of others

WQBA will probably show up in the "stew" as well. Poor WRVA!

Happy hunting!

Thanks, Mark. That makes 1140 one down and three to go for me in the Cuban dept!
Not sure if last night's Surco is the unIDed one that's been dominant the last
few months...aurorae can play good tricks with the usuals...

One of my recordings earlier this year:

"Transmite CMIP, Radio Surco, desde Ciego de Avila, capital de la locucion
cubana."

Fairly regular here at the coast, one of 4 different Cubans (!) attempting to
"stick it" to WQBA Miami.

Re: [IRCA] Audacity editing problem

2015-12-21 Thread Saul Chernos
Thank you everyone for the suggestions. I have incorporated some, and am
working this through. I think for whatever reason it is affecting FM
recordings, and not AM, or at least not noticeably, and I think I noticed
something that may have been going on longer, and that I noticed it because of
a clip that had static on it and a sudden burst of sound - from a meteor
scatter clip I saved. I am not convinced it's happening to the same degree on
all clips, and I'm experimenting around. Colin, I will in a day or so take you
up on your offer to listen to a clip of a local, especially if I don't resolve
things to my satisfaction first. I seem to be OK with AM clips. I would likely
benefit by finding and reading an Audacity tutorial and/or manual, because I am
winging it in minimalist fashion.

Thanks, again!

[IRCA] Audacity editing problem

2015-12-21 Thread Saul Chernos
Audacity problem. It's started warbling audio after I delete the excess and
save the patch I want. Sounds like it's under water. I've even deleted my copy
of Audacity and downloaded a fresh new one. Still happens. Any ideas?

Thanks, Colin. What could an antivirus program do to an audacity edit? I'm

Re: [IRCA] 1020 NE

2015-12-01 Thread Saul Chernos
Hi Rick,
Yee-haw. I was pretty sure I've been getting them, and a Spanish speaker (from
Mexico) on WTFDA Forums nailed the ID that I had a partial read on. It was only
bonus last night to also pull in New Mexico on 1020 running Spanish religion (R
Vision Cristiana). That was an easy webstream //. NM is a relog but probably
just the 2nd time ever had that one here. A new catch from NE doubles the fun.
Thanks for listening to the clip!!!
The NE 1020 station (Mexicana format) has been getting out well lately at
sunrise and possibly after sunset.

Just now finally had a chance to listen to the clip. I was able to make out
enough of the ID at the beginning to say that it's definitely my local on 1020,
KMMQ. The music at the end is banda, heavy on the tuba and trumpets.

scanning the dial today(12/1, Tuesday) around 445-450pm central I came across a
jumbled mess on 1150khz.
In the span of 20 minutes, I heard 5 stations on 1150.. KZNE Bryan, TX with
several clear mentions of Brazos County Texas KNED-AM 1150 McAlister, OK
with classic country music and WJBO Baton Rouge, LA with Sean Hannity.
I heard a 4th and 5th station, the 4th one I dont remember. but the 5th one was
True Oldies WJRD Tuscaloosa. Heard at 5pm central straight up with "W271AM ,
WJRD Tuscaloosa.. True Oldies Channel 1150am, 102.1 FM WJRD" into music.
They are 20kw ND Day and 1kw/4 towers, southeasterly pattern before.. I've
never logged them before, but one would think if they were on 20kw they'd be
alot stronger then they were.. but their night pattern is beamed AWAY from me.

[IRCA] Four domestic unIDs

2015-11-16 Thread Saul Chernos
A few unIDs from Burnt River a couple weeks ago, curious for any leads on these:
1150 = Sounds like "WGUS Traffic and Weather..." to start off. Nothing listed
on 1150 even remotely fits. Perhaps a call change, or an FM reference here?
1360 = Weather mentions town sounding like Greenwin, then what appears to be
souther gospel music.
1400 = Oldies and a jingle that appears to start with a "W" ... this one is
likely too weak to ID but giving it one last chance before declaring it a goner.
1490 = News sounds local in nature, but what sounds like the biggest cargo plan
to land at an airport is intriguing. Name of airport sounds like Maidstone.
Nothing checks.
Clips are all posted onlineat

Re: [IRCA] Four domestic unIDs

2015-11-16 Thread Saul Chernos

Thanks to Stand, Dennis and Paul for pointing to my 1490 unID referencing Super
Guppy landing in Mansfield OH, for the 1490 there. That's one big fish -- sure
looks like a giant guppy from photos!

It's a relog, but glad to solve these things regardless.
Paul (thanks!) suggests my 1360 weather guy sounds like he's saying GREENWOOD
rather than Greenwin. That could be. There's a few southern gospel options,
need to work on some matching perhaps.
Paul (thanks, again!) also says the 1400 sounds like its doing a sung and
spoken legal id going into news. With the second letter of the call sign being
or sounding like a K and the city of license being sung sounds like it rhymes
with or sounds like Erie. That clip is not so great in terms of strength, a
truly weak signal...
Thanks, all!

Hi Stan,
I don't see evening programming on the schedule on the web site of WMIR SC, but
it's the only black gospel station listed on 1200, and I have heard it a couple
of times up in Ontario during auroral cx. Might be worth calling them.

I doubt WCHB Inkster MI as they're listed as carrying jazz at that hour. But
that'd be my second guess.
My NRC log is at my DX site (I'm now in Toronto), so I'm going by the following

Re: [IRCA] Big Brother CJ Show on 1200 kHz

2015-11-13 Thread Saul Chernos
I'd much prefer swampland in Florida, just in case any of you want to sell me
anything. That said I'm inclined to agree - if it's past sunset it's almost
certain WMIR would have been running more than 11 watts to be heard in CT.

Not that I hear it doing this terribly often. I've heard it once or twice,
only. At 7pm or so it's a couple hours past sunset, so it's conceivable that
WMIR just went a little late, or the xmtr is out of form, etc.
Others closer to WMIR might know if it does this often...

[IRCA] 1640-1610 PA TIS question

2015-11-12 Thread Saul Chernos
On 1640 last week I heard a very clear loop recording as follows:
"This is WPWF986 broadcasting on 1610 AM. This message will repeat."
As advertised, it repeated over and over. Just that short message.
There is indeed a station with those calls on 1610. It's assigned to PA DoT and
seems centred around Harrisburg.
However, I was definitely on 1640 - it was underneath Relevant Radio.
More info online

Anyone else noticing this, or have further information?

[IRCA] 890 Christian programming question

2015-11-12 Thread Saul Chernos
Back on Nov 2, underneath 890 WLS, I heard two stations just after sunset.
The second one is known - WHJA in Laurel MS with black gospel, most prominent
around 2040. It's pretty much been a late-evening regular this season the last
couple seasons.
But, earlier in the evening, I had Adventures in Odyssey, seeming to begin
around 1913. It's produced by Moody Bible Institute.
Any thoughts on who might carry this?

Not sure where the K indices were when you had the hets, but if transpolar then
perhaps Japan, S-N Korea, Taiwan et al. Have had these that way from
Newfoundland. And one morning from Burnt River ON had lots of hets on the N-S
antenna just before sunrise one morning during the solar minimum a few years

pole, but someone please correct me if I'm wrong - and tell me where I should

Re: [IRCA] XEQ 940

2015-08-29 Thread Saul Chernos
I noticed XEQ huge on my Tecsun ultralight at 1 am Saturday morning when I
arrived at Burnt River for a quick overnight stay (am now back in Toronto), and
that it seemed very much back on channel, where it's supposed to be. This will
make 940 much more bearable to listen to if XEQ is truly fixed.
Also had Mexico on 1060 and presumed with weak Spanish bubbling on 1110. I had
to be up for a 9 am hike this morning so didn't work the dials much more than
this. Cx are no doubt ramping up for the coming season.

This time, frequency was quite at nominal, even a few Hz above I would
say (1 to 5 Hz according to the current calibration, which might need a
 refresh).

Re: [IRCA] Format change at KMZN-740

2015-08-18 Thread Saul Chernos
KBOE 104.9 must get out exceedingly well in its home turf. It is hugely common
here by meteor scatter, and I've also had it multiple times by tropo. I once
had an entire weather report in the car via a long meteor scatter burst while
driving to a WTFDA convention in Dunkirk / Jamestown NY.

Not sure when this happened, but it's been very recently, and I noticed it
for the first time this afternoon. In a move that makes 0% sense, KMZN-740
has dumped its simulcast of KBOE 104.9's hot country format and is now all
sports. Station was running Jim Rome followed by a ToH update from CBS
Sports Radio when I tuned in. There is probably nothing on KMZN's
programming lineup that isn't already being offered on KBGG-1700 in
55-miles-distant Des Moines, a city that is also home to all-sports
 KXNO-1460.

Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] WCBS 880 OFF AIR

2015-08-16 Thread Saul Chernos
Yes, WCBS (and WFAN) was indeed off the Thursday night, not Friday night.
Regardless of the error, I am really glad the outage was pre-announced to us.
The lesson I take home from this is that when we get word like this, we keep
our options wide open and monitor the channel more carefully aft other possible
times. Aside from informant error, it can also happen that an engineer's plans
change - for any number of reasons.

The other lesson I take home is that WFAN and WCBS often go off together. I
believe they are co-located. Regardless, they've both been off together often
enough before, so no real surprise there (I too had forgotten).
We're DXers. We monitor the bands in case something happens. When we get
advance word like this, perhaps we respond with extra vigilance on the channel
and other possible channels. Nothing Bruce had would have been new for me, and
I decided not to bother setting up the outdoor antennae for this given that we
had thunderstorms and I was also busy on FM with the annual Perseid meteor
shower.
This - and a weekend aurora - has totally whetted my appetite for the coming AM
season. Plan is to dust off both outdoor antenna on the Labour Day weekend and
have them ready for set-up right afterwards, when this place is no longer used
as a family summertime cottage.
Anyhow, I really appreciate Paul letting us know about the outage.
