Rick,

I tried this tonight and it worked like a champ, except no one was in the
chatroom except for me. I called a friend, and had him join me. It worked
fine—but he has no interest in MW DXing…so no joy.

Who’s in? Let’s revive #MWDX…it’s a great resource!

I will be interested to see how this all plays out. I'll be reading the reviews.

Not that I have much of a "horse in the race" as 95% of my DXing is
after-the-fact, sometimes a few hours after and sometimes a few weeks after.
This is somewhat out of necessity as peak DX time (local sunset typically
around here) lands right in the middle of family dinner, something that can
stretch over two hours from the start of prep to the clean-up of the last dish
or utensil. Fortunately, by allowing time-shifting of listening, SDR file
capture has taken away some of the "recluse during good DX time" problems many
of us had pre-2005 or so. One can do normal things with family and friends at
normal times. DXing can be done at some otherwise-useless time such as the
middle of the day waiting for work being done on the car.

Still there will be a few times when I'll be DXing live. Sometimes this will be
on my home gear, sometimes on a remote SDR, and sometimes in the car at a beach
(where, presumably, I could hook to the chat site via cellphone web browser).

One thing I can do is publicize this chat channel on some other lists. That may
generate more users covering more geographic areas.

I'm testing a PHP/MySQL Chat system over at https://dxer.ca/blab/

The downside of Facebook is that you have to be a member of Facebook
and that means giving up almost every last gribble of personal information
you have --
and it isn't truly live nor is it a chat channel...

The system I have installed can any number of channels on it all dedicated
to any aspect of the
hobby and any geographical location.

If it catches on, great - if it doesn't, no big - it only took 15 minutes
to set it up.

I like it. Clean and simple and real time and no ads. Call me
old-fashioned, but I think we've given up a lot of that old-time
simplicity and privacy for the "flashy" modern look of Facebook and all
the rest. From the looks of it, there is literally nothing that could
break or go wrong, unless the server crashes. And you don't have to have
a fast PC, or be using the latest browser, etc, etc, etc.

I just commented there about a new station I just logged on 640 kHz.
Condx here in N. Indiana are good to the deep south.

Thanks for setting it up, Colin!

Re: [IRCA] Live DX spotter / chat system *show of hands*

2019-03-11 Thread Rick Dau
Nick, I can answer that. During MW DX seasons about 5 or 6 years ago, I was a
regular -- almost nightly -- visitor to the #mwdx room on Starchat.net. About
2 years ago, I attempted to get back onto it, and was unsuccessful, as was
Shawn Axelrod in Winnipeg (I think it was due to Starchat being powered by
Java, which was having some sort of security issue at the time). Just for
grins and giggles, I tried again this evening, and could not even get past
Starchat.net's homepage. When I typed "mwdx" in the search page, it wasn't
recognized as a room. So Starchat.net isn't an option anymore, at least not
for me.

A couple years ago, I found librairc.net/chat, and was able to get #mwdx going
as a room there. I did let a few folks know about it, and some, like Shawn and
longtime IRCA member Tom Laskowski in South Bend, Indiana, were able to find
their way onto it. Others could not, so I gave up pursuing it.

Tonight, however, I have found something that I think will pass muster. One
simply goes to librairc.net's sister page, http://www.chanops.org. Once there,
you'll see a homepage with a pair of fields -- one for a nickname and one for a
channel to go to -- under "Think of a nickname..." Type in a nickname that you
want to use, and you do NOT have to click the box underneath that says "I have
a password". Then go down to the Channel field, type in #mwdx, and click on
the Start button. THAT should get you in.
And the best part isno registration required!

Crossing his fingers and hoping this will work,
Rick Dau

Re: [IRCA] Live DX spotter / chat system *show of hands*

2019-03-11 Thread R. Colin Newell

First rule is to see what's already available.

bcblog had its last submission less than two hours ago.

Does anyone know what happened to #mwdx?

Even ye olde DXFishbarrel can
help  http://www3.telus.net/public/shallpat/test/display.htm
Obviously most relevance to the northwest DXer, but if the thing is
lit up like a Christmas tree in the evening, checking for TAs
anywhere in America might be productive, and if it's lit up at your
local sunrise, it may mean that conditions are good overall, and that
switching on the radio would not be amiss.

best wishes,

Nick

Re: [IRCA] Live DX spotter / chat system *show of hands*

2019-03-11 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
That is why I wondered if #mwdx chat was still functional
somewhere. It's years since I used it, but I remember it being
entertaining and helpful for trading real time TA tips across the
continent when there was an openingbut that was during the last
sunspot minimum.

Regarded as being old stuff now? Certainly my software for it is
rather out of date, and nothing seems to work.

best wishes,

Nick

2019-03-11 Thread Stephen Hawkins

Collin,

It was a question I asked.   I got several replies and some good info.
They helped but so far I have not found what I was looking for.  I don't
think such a thing for AMBCB DXing or SWL exists. I'm all for it.

I'd love to hear / see your ideas.  As a Ham I use
http://www.dxsummit.fi/#/ and a telnet based one called dxspots.com

I like these two because I can filter what spots I see or don't see.  I
frequently have both of them up filtered different ways.

Re: [IRCA] Live DX spotter / chat system *show of hands*

2019-03-11 Thread Nick Hall-Patch

First rule is to see what's already available.

bcblog had its last submission less than two hours ago.

Does anyone know what happened to #mwdx?

Even ye olde DXFishbarrel can
help http://www3.telus.net/public/shallpat/test/display.htm
Obviously most relevance to the northwest DXer, but if the thing is
lit up like a Christmas tree in the evening, checking for TAs
anywhere in America might be productive, and if it's lit up at your
local sunrise, it may mean that conditions are good overall, and that
switching on the radio would not be amiss.

best wishes,

Nick

Besides AM DXing, I've been wanting to do more SW DXing, and a quick
page for alerts for both would be great for that. I think maybe
there's 4 people in the entire world who use the SW logger at dxworld...

You know, a place where you could quickly sign in and post an alert that
you're hearing HCJB on 9560 khz or Voice of the Voyager on 6160 khz...
or there is a great TA opening to the West Coast...

Hi Colin,

Please count me in. Now retired, I have more time for activities like
this.

Lately been hearing Asian stations on 41 meters in early morning here.

The other reason I like this idea is some of the websites currently
available are "how I say?" out of date.

Best wishes es 73

2019-03-11 Thread Les Rayburn
Colin,

I don’t SWL much anymore, but would love something like this for MW DXing (and
FM—though options already exist for that part of the spectrum)

Domestic openings too. Lately, the DX Tips and e-mail lists have been more
active in this regard, putting some new ones in my log.
