Huge quake hits Indonesian coast
A
major quake in the Indian Ocean has hit the coast of the Indonesian
tsunami-hit island of Sumatra, triggering an alert across the region.
The quake was given a magnitude of 8.2 by the US Geological Survey who
have warned it could cause tidal waves.
The epicentre was located at about 200 km (125 miles) off the mainland.
The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the quake could cause a
"widely destructive tsunami" and it was felt as far away as Malaysia.
"Authorities in those regions should be aware of this possibility and
take immediate action," the center said in a statement on its website.
It comes three months after a major earthquake and subsequent tsunami
in the Indian Ocean on 26 December caused major damage and killed tens of
thousands of people in the region.
Russ Evans, a seismologist from the British Geological Survey, told the
BBC the Boxing Day earthquake had a magnitude of 9.5.
He says the latest quake was almost certainly an after-shock from the
first one and that a tsunami was certainly possible, but on a smaller
scale.
'I heard my neighbours screaming'
The quake struck between the Sumatran cities of Padang and Medan at
around 2315 local time (1615 GMT) and lasted up to three minutes, said
Ramlan of Indonesia's Meteorological and Geophysics Office.
Power blackouts and major panic ensued, local officials told AFP news
agency.
The quake was felt across the region with people in the Malaysian
capital, Kuala Lumpur, some 500km away, evacuating high-rise buildings and
running out into the streets.
"I was getting ready for bed, and suddenly, the room started shaking,"
said Kuala Lumpur resident Jessie Chong.
"I thought I was hallucinating at first, but then I heard my neighbours
screaming and running out."
Thailand, which was also hit by the 26 December disaster, has issued an
tsunami alert.

Azaan: The Amazing Phenomenon
Amazing as it sounds, but fortunately for the Muslims of the world, it is an established fact. Have a look at a map of the world and you will find Indonesia on the eastern side of the earth. The major cities of Indonesia are Java, Sumatra, Borneo and Saibil. As soon as dawn breaks on the eastern side of Saibil, at approximately 5:30 am local time, Fajar Azaan begins. Thousands of Muazzins in Indonesia begin reciting the Azaan.
The process advances towards West Indonesia. One and a half hours after the Azaan has been completed in Saibil, it echoes in Jakarta. Sumatra then follows suit and before this auspicious process of calling Azaan ends in Indonesia, it has already begun in Malaysia.
Burma is next in line, and within an hour of its beginning in Jakarta, it reaches Dacca, the capital city of Bangladesh. After Bangladesh, it has already prevailed in western India, from Calcutta to Srinagar. It then advances towards Bombay and the environment of entire India resounds with this proclamation. Srinagar and Sialkot (a city in north Pakistan) have the same timing for Azaan. The time difference between Sialkot, Quetta, and Karachi is forty minutes, and within this time, Fajar Azaan is heard throughout Pakistan. Before it ends there, it has already begun in Afghanistan and Muscat. The time difference between Muscat and Baghdad is one hour. Azaan resounds during this one hour in the environments of Hijaaz-e-Muqaddas (Holy cities of Makkah and Madinah), Yemen, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Iraq.
The time difference between Baghdad and Alexandria in Egypt is again one hour. Azaan continues to resound in Syria, Egypt, Somalia and Sudan during this hour. The time difference between eastern and western Turkey is one and a half hours, and during this time it is echoed with the call to prayer.
Alexandria and Tripoli (capital of Libya) are located at one hour's difference. The process of calling Azaan thus continues throughout the whole of Africa. Therefore, the proclamation of the Tawheed and Risaalat that had begun in Indonesia reaches the Eastern Shore of the Atlantic Ocean after nine and half hours. Prior to the Azaan reaching the shores of the Atlantic, the process of Zohar Azaan has already started in east Indonesia, and before it reaches Dacca, Asar Azaan has started. This has hardly reached Jakarta one and half hours later, the time of Maghrib becomes due, and no sooner has Maghrib time reached Sumatra, the time for calling Isha Azaan has commenced in Saibil! When the Muazzins of Indonesia are calling out Fajar Azaan, the African Muazzins are calling the Azaan for Isha.
If we were to ponder over this phenomenon thoughtfully, we would conclude the amazing fact that there is not even a single moment when hundreds of thousands of Muazzins around the world are not reciting the Azaan on the surface of this earth. Even as you read this material right now, you can be sure there are atleast thousands of people who are hearing and reciting the Azaan!!!

The previous series of this article can be read at Prophet Mohammad * Other Prophets By: Grand Shaykh, Professor Hasan QaribullahDean of Umm Durman Islamic University and Sammania Grand Shaykh NEW LIFE OF PROPHET MOHAMMAD IN MAKKAH It wasn't long before the young Muhammad had settled down very happily to his new lifestyle in the City of Mecca and found that he had lots of cousins, an affectionate grandfather named Abdul Muttalib, as well as many uncles and aunts. Amongst the children Muhammad loved most were Hamza and his young sister Saffiyah, the children of his grandfather, Abdul Muttalib. Muhammad and Hamza were practically the same age, however, Muhammad was the elder, although technically speaking, Hamza was his uncle and Saffiyah his aunt. THE JOURNEY TO YATHRIB One day, Lady Amina learned that a caravan would soon be leaving Mecca and pass through Yathrib (Medina) on its way north. It was a wonderful opportunity for Muhammad, who was now six, to meet the rest of his cousins and relatives that lived there. Barakah, Lady Amina's maid, made the necessary preparations for the eleven day journey and they left with the caravan riding two camels, one ridden by Lady Amina and her son, the other by Barakah. They stayed in Yathrib for a month and the young Muhammad met more of his cousins, the children of Adiyy. He enjoyed being with them and went kite flying and sometimes they would take him to their large well where he learned to swim. It was a happy time but the month soon passed and the caravan destined for Mecca was ready to leave, so they made their farewells and departed. THE DEATH OF LADY AMINA As the caravan journeyed to Mecca, Lady Amina was taken seriously ill and never recovered. The angels took away her soul at a village called Al Abwa and it is there that she lies buried. Barakah did her best to comfort the sobbing young Muhammad whose heart became vacant at the loss of his mother and together they made the heartbreaking journey to the house of his grandfather in Mecca. Abdul Muttalib, deeply saddened by the loss, took his grandson into his own household and a very special love bonded them even more closely together. THE LOVE OF ABDUL MUTTALIB For many years Abdul Muttalib had taken to sleeping near the Ka'ba at Hijr Ishmael, the place where he had been told in a vision to dig for the well of Zamzam many years before Abdullah, Muhammad's father was born. At Hijr Ishmael his couch would be spread out for him and more often than not it was there that one would find him. There was an unwritten rule that no one sat on his couch, not even his young son Hamza, however, such was the love he had for his grandson Muhammad that he alone was welcome to join him there. One day some of Muhammad's uncles found him sitting on the couch and suggested he should not do so. Immediately, his grandfather told them, "Let my son stay, by Allah, he has a great future." The young Muhammad was a constant source of pleasure to his grandfather and both enjoyed the company of each other. Such was his endearing personality that anyone who met him loved Muhammad. It was noticeable that even at such a tender age, Muhammad showed signs of wisdom far beyond his years and when Abdul Muttalib attended important tribal meetings in the House of Assembly with other elders of the tribe, he would take his grandson with him. Muhammad's opinion was often sought in earnest despite his age, whereupon, Abdul Muttalib would proudly comment, "There is a great future ahead for my son!" Abdul Muttalib always referred with pride to his grandson as being his "son". THE DEATH OF ABDUL MUTTALIB Abdul Muttalib was now eighty-two years of age and a few months after his grandson's eighth birthday he was taken ill and passed away. Before Abdul Muttalib died he entrusted the care of his grandson to his son Abu Talib, the blood brother of Muhammad's father Abdullah, so without hesitation Abu Talib gladly became Muhammad's guardian and took him into his own household. As Abdul Muttalib's bier was carried to a place known as Al Hujun for burial, many walked in his funeral procession and his young grandson shed many tears as he walked with them to the graveside. It was a time of great sorrow. Like his father before him, Abu Talib became a loving guardian to his nephew and his wife, Fatima, daughter of Asad, Hashim's son, and half brother of Abdul Muttalib, did all she could to compensate for the mother he had lost. Indeed, such was the degree of her care that in later years after her beloved trust had attained Prophethood, he told those around him that rather than let him go hungry, Fatima would have preferred to let

Narrated Abu Hazim: I heard Sahl bin Saad saying, "A woman brought a Burda (i.e.
a square piece of cloth having edging). I asked, 'Do you know what a Burda is?'
They replied in the affirmative and said, "It is a cloth sheet with woven
margins." Sahl went on, "She addressed the Prophet and said, 'I have woven it
with my hands for you to wear.' The Prophet took it as he was in need of it, and
came to us wearing it as a waist sheet. One of us said, 'O Allah's Apostle! Give
it to me to wear.' The Prophet agreed to give it to him. The Prophet sat with
the people for a while and then returned (home), wrapped that waist sheet and
sent it to him. The people said to that man, 'You haven't done well by asking
him for it when you know that he never turns down anybody's request.' The man
replied, 'By Allah, I have not asked him for it except to use it as my shroud
when I die." Sahl added; "Later it (i.e. that sheet) was his shroud."

The person wanted to have the sheet for his shroud because he hoped that Allah
will show mercy towards him after death as he is covered in a sheet that was
worn by the Prophet. We can also hope for the same by dressing ourselves with
the lifestyle of the Prophet (peace be upon him) as his simple lifestyle is the
most beloved to Allah.

Mehmed Zahid Kotku RhA described it as follows: "When the roads of Istanbul were widened and the tombs of Ottoman Sultans were cleared of other graves, the grave of our beloved khawaja, a professor at the Bayazid Mosque Madrasa, the postnishin of Gumush-khanewi Dargah, Hajji Mustafa Feyzî Effendi of Takirdagh was located between the Suleymaniye Mosque and the tomb of Qanûnî Sultan Sulayman. There were about ten graves there. Upon the instruction of the Prime Minister Menderes, these graves were moved to the empty area. We were requested to be observers while the graves were opened and the bones were carried in special bags. "When it was the turn for Mustafa Feyzî Effendi's grave, those who were present there witnessed an extraordinary phenomenon. Despite the thirty some years that had passed, not even one hair of his beard was changed. He looked as though he had just been buried. We observed that the earth does not dissolve the body of true scholars. May Almighty Allah bless him." -- Once I heard from Aziz Mahmud, who was a friend of Aziz Effendi and an imam of the Fatih Mosque: "I used to keep the books of the City Stock Farm. In the month of March, we had to balance the books and close the account for the year. I had trouble balancing the book. The director called me: 'If you cannot balance the book in two days, we both have to look for new jobs.' "I went to Aziz Effendi and stated the problem: 'There is a small difference in the balance. I cannot find the reason.' He asked me to bring the book. I went home and brought the book. Aziz Effendi was getting ready to make wudu'u while sitting on the floor. He asked me, 'Come, sit by me and turn the pages.' While he was sitting with his arms crossed on his chest, I kept turning the pages. At one page, he put his finger on a number and said: 'Look at this number carefully and close the book.' "I went home and searched the invoices to find the one related to the number pointed out by Aziz Effendi. I realized that I had recorded 69 as 96 by mistake. I corrected the mistake and balanced the book by the help of Aziz Effendi." (24) On the Muslim's view of life,Aziz Effendi asked this question: "How would a Muslim view this life?" There were some responses, yet he answered the question: "When a Muslim looks at this life, he sees the hellfire behind the pleasures and comforts of this life, and the paradise behind the hardship and servitude. He was probably never seen eating a meal alone. We would be with him at the meal table. He was very humble and close to us. He considered us so much his brothers or children that he offered us food at the table with a spoon. This world and everything in it held no more value to him than the peel of an onion. He kept not one thing in excess in his house. As far as we know, he had a tight budget, yet he never made anybody feel that he was poor. There were times that he and his family would sleep hungry. Yet he would accept the hardship with pleasure and be happy and content at all times. His situation reminded us of the old stories regarding an indigent, an orphan and a prisoner of war coming to Hadrat Ali and asking for food. --- Abdullah Hasib Khawaja Effendi was unique in modesty and humbling himself. On this, Abdul'aziz Effendi remarked: "Only a few people comes to this world with a modesty matching to that of Hasib Effendi." One night, Sirri Bey and Hasib Effendi left Ibrahim Pasha Mosque at Shahzadabashi and walked to the trolley stop. While they were waiting for the trolley, a drunken person approached to Hasib Effendi, pointed the liquor bottle he was holding and asked: "Khawaja, what is in this bottle?" Hasib Effendi calmly responded: "Son, I hope Almighty Allah saves you from that." Hearing these words, the drunk man passed out and threw himself on the ground. Right at that time, the trolley arrived. Sirri Bey and Khawaja Effendi got in and sat side by side. Soon after the trolley moved, Hasib Effendi started crying. Sirri Bey looked at Khawaja Effendi in amazement. Hasib Effendi turned to him and said: "A be yahu, do you know what I am crying for? What if Almighty Allah had put us in the place of that drunken person? What would we do?"The next day that drunken man came to Ibrahim Pasha Mosque, repented, and became a member of the congregation of Khawaja Effendi. The entire world was shaken by the devastation and destruction caused by the tsunami in South Asia on Dec.26, 2004. Over 290,000 lost their lives that day and many more will probably die in the chaos of the aftermath. The victims ranged from wealthy tourists to poor coastal villagers and represented over 40 countries globally. Along with millions around the world, Africa also felt the powerful aftershock of one of the greatest natural disasters in history. I was fortunate to accompany a delegation of the Al Imdaad Foundation to witness first hand and report back on the conditions in Sri Lanka and Indonesia. The province of Aceh was the worst-hit area from this disaster, and the numbers of victims from Aceh alone are expected to be approximately 200,000.Expecting to see a fair amount of destruction, I readied myself to absorb the plight of the survivors, not knowing that this trip was to become an experience I would never ever forget. Death and destruction alongside standing masajid and the sprawling orphanages is no place for the fainthearted. My experience has given me a new purpose in life especially after listening to the heartbreaking story of brother Aamir. He told me that he could save his teenage daughter if she was prepared to hang on to him naked, but because of the shame and modesty she rather chooses to go along with the wave. Its two months since the fateful day but many a father can still be seen wondering across empty lands in the hope of finding family. In Sri Lanka, a brother told us that he lost 64 people of his family .After the third earthquake and wave survivors recall tearfully how they were thrown around and turned as if they were cotton wool. Aamir say You could not run, not even stand at all, Allah's minute power came the fore A sister in Sri Lanka who by the mercy of the almighty survived tearfully told me that it would have been better if she passed on instead of her husband and six of her kids. Not knowing what the future holds, she nevertheless offered to adopt six orphaned children who live not very far from her 2M X 2M tent. Jameela in Aceh told me that she did not realize at first how serious the situation was. But, when she turned her face around she saw the water was very dark and about 7 meters [23 feet] high heading to catch her. She realized it must be a tsunami, and I left her car and ran as fast as she could. Turning right she noticed the water about 150 meters away from her home heading to the main street.
