[IslamCity] We would share power, says exiled leader of Syrian Islamist group

2006-01-30 Thread shorketh ali

We would share power, says exiled leader of Syrian Islamist grouphttp://www.guardian.co.uk/syria/story/0,13031,1694985,00.html?gusrc=rssRory McCarthyThursday January 26, 2006GuardianThe exiled leader of Syria's large, outlawed Islamist movement, the MuslimBrotherhood, has said his group is ready to share power in a future governmentwith other opposition figures.Ali Bayanouni, who has political asylum in Britain and lives in north London, said the Muslim Brotherhood wants a peaceful change of government in Damascusand the establishment of a "civil, democratic state", not an Islamic republic."We believe that after 40 years of this corrupt dictatorship it would bedifficult for any one party to take responsibility for the country," he said inan interview with the Guardian at his
home in Colinwood. "We definitely don'tsee ourselves as the alternative. We see ourselves as partners with others inthe coming stage."His comments mark a shift in the party's thinking since the 1980s when itchallenged the Ba'athist regime. The Brotherhood was involved in an armeduprising against the state in which more than 10,000 people were killed. Sincethen the movement, which is still thought to have large support in Syria, hasbeen repressed. Membership of the party is punishable by death. The Brotherhood plays a leading role among opposition groups at a time when theSyrian regime faces a crisis. Several intelligence officials are suspects inaUN inquiry into the assassination last year of the former Lebanese primeminister Rafiq Hariri.Damascus faces the potential threat of UN sanctions in the future, and lastweek the US froze the American assets of Assef Shawkat, head of Syria'smilitary intelligence and
brother-in-law of President Bashar al-Assad.Washington said he was involved in "Syrian terrorism" including interference inLebanon and Israel.Opposition figures have begun to speak openly about Syria's future if theregime falls.Mr Bayanouni, 68, said he anticipated a broad national government if the Syrianregime falls. "We should have an interim authority where everyone can help eachother to try to reform and repair what was corrupted," he said. The regime has warned that if it is forced out radical Islamic movements willseize power in Damascus and sow chaos. There has been a growth of religiousextremism in Syria, fuelled in part by the war in Iraq. The Damascus regimefrequently reports violent clashes between its security forces and unnamedmilitants.Despite its new rhetoric, the Muslim Brotherhood still has some way to go toconvince the several other religious minorities in Syria that it does notharbour
conservative Islamic political ambitions.Mr Bayanouni, who trained as a lawyer and spent several years in jail, leftSyria in 1979 after several of his family were arrested. He lived in Jordan for20 years and moved to Britain in 2000. He has led the movement for the pastdecade and has presided over a pragmatic rethink of its policies. Comment; If this is true and he wants a non-Islamic state then why bother to call your party an Islamic one? And also why continue to oppose the existing non-Islamic government? Change in Islam has to be from the Islamic basis and not what pleases the west .

[IslamCity] Abbas to Ask Hamas to Form Next Government

2006-01-30 Thread Alan Border

“The Unbelievers are protectors, one of another: Unless ye do this, (protect each other), there would be tumult and oppression on earth, and great mischief.” (Al-Qur'an, 8:73 - Al-Anfal [Spoils of War, Booty]) Abbas to Ask Hamas to Form Next
GovernmentBy SARAH EL DEEB, Associated Press Writer http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060126/ap_on_re_mi_ea/palestinians_electionRAMALLAH, West Bank - Palestinian leader
Mahmoud Abbas will ask Hamas to form the next Palestinian government after the Islamic militants swept parliamentary elections, and the defeated Fatah Party will serve in the opposition, a senior Fatah legislator said Thursday. A Hamas-only government, without Fatah as a moderating force, is sure to throw Mideast peacemaking into turmoil. The Islamic militants, who carried out dozens of suicide bombings and seek
Israel's destruction, have said they oppose peace talks and will not disarm. Israel and the United States have said they will not deal with Hamas. Earlier Thursday, top Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal told Abbas his group is ready for a political partnership. However, Fatah does not want to join a Hamas government, said Fatah legislator Saeb Erekat. "We will be a loyal opposition and rebuild the party," Erekat said, after meeting with Abbas. Abbas will ask Hamas to form the next government, Erekat said.Officials in both parties said Hamas appeared to have captured a large majority of seats in Wednesday's elections. The Central Election Commission said the vote count had not been completed and that it would make an official announcement Thursday evening. Abbas, who favors peace talks with
Israel, has said he would resign if he could no longer pursue his agenda. Aides said he planned a major speech Thursday night.Israel and the United States have said they would not deal with a government led by Hamas,
which has carried out dozens of suicide bombings and which they consider a terrorist group. Acknowledging the Hamas victory, Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia and his Cabinet ministers resigned Thursday — hours before official results from Wednesday's vote were released. "This is the choice of the people. It should be respected," Qureia said. "If it's true, then the president should ask Hamas to form a new government." The Cabinet remained in office in a caretaker capacity.Under the law, Abbas must ask the largest party in the new parliament — presumably Hamas — to form the next government. Abbas was elected separately a year ago and remains president.
Hamas capitalized on widespread discontent with Fatah's corruption and ineffectiveness. Much of its campaign focused on internal Palestinian issues, while playing down the conflict with Israel. Israeli officials declined comment on the outcome, but senior security officials gathered Thursday to discuss the results. Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert scheduled talks with senior officials later in the day.Olmert said Wednesday, before Hamas claimed victory, that Israel cannot trust a Palestinian leadership in which the Islamic group has a role. "Israel can't accept a situation in which Hamas, in its present form as a terror group calling for the destruction of Israel, will be part of
the Palestinian Authority without disarming," Olmert said in a statement issued by his office.Reactions to the Hamas victory streamed in from around the world. Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi, according to news reports, called it a "very, very, very bad result." But Benita Ferrero-Waldner, the European Union's external relations commissioner, said Hamas must be "ready to work for peace" with Israel if it joins the Palestinian government. U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan congratulated the Palestinian people on the peaceful elections, which he views as an important step toward a Palestinian state.President Bush told The Wall Street Journal in an interview Wednesday the United States will not deal with Hamas until it renounces its position calling for the destruction of Israel. Hamas said before the election it does not want to govern alone, and would prefer to bring Fatah into a coalition. Hamas officials said the group would declare its intentions after official results are announced. Hamas' exiled supreme leader, Khaled Mashaal, called Abbas from Syria to discuss the results. "He stressed Hamas insists on a partnership with all the Palestinian factions, especially our brothers in Fatah," Hamas said on its Web site. Before the election, Hamas had suggested it would be content as a junior partner in the next government, thus avoiding a decision on its relationship with Israel. Throughout the campaign, leaders sent mixed signals, hinting they could be open to some sort of accommodation with Israel. Its apparent victory will now force it to take a clearer position on key issues, including whether to abandon its violent ideology. Mushir al-Masri, a Hamas candidate who won election in the northern Gaza Strip, sent

[IslamCity] Principles, Hamas and the politics of expediency

2006-01-30 Thread shorketh ali

Principles, Hamas and the politics of expediency Sajjad Khan26 January 2006http://europe.mediamonitors.net/content/view/full/25875 "Western governments used to believe that free and fair elections provided absolute legitimacy but then came the Palestinian elections and Hamas." Reading all the diatribes from Washington, London and other EU capitals after Hamas’s crushing victory has got me thinking, how they do it keeping a straight face. Do what, you ask, how do they actually maintain a straight face while consistently contravening their very own principles. But don’t they have a point you ask, surely a party which has now been elected to government must eschew violence and renounce its belief in regime change. The irony of such fallacious arguments fails to be appreciated by supporters of George Bush’s neoconservative Republican Party who have done nothing
but engage in perpetual violence since 2001. Nor is it really credible to complain about regime change in Tel Aviv while simultaneously working to initiate regime change in Tehran and Damascus. Of course the fact that Israel has violently swept the existing unitary Palestinian state that existed in 1948 off the map is neither here nor there. However the above points aren’t the key ones, what is more serious is the ubiquitous depredation of principle we are seeing these days, whether its Google’s surrender to China, the ethical vacuum in Washington or the roll back of fundamental values in the War on Terror. This is important because the key strength of a principle is to gauge its resilience when faced with difficulties and challenge, the acid test being that a principle is only a principle if its inconvenient to apply it. Principles that constantly have to be diluted are clearly then a barometer of the parlous state of a particular way of life. As each day
goes by in the War on Terror, more and more cherished cows are now being slaughtered on such a regular basis that it is difficult to know what to do with all the beef. Western governments used to believe that people had a right to a fair trial but then came Guantanomo Bay. Western governments used to believe that people should not be subject to arbitrary arrest but then came Extraordinary Rendition. Western governments used to believe that the rule of international law was sacrosanct but then came the unilateral invasion of Iraq. Western governments used to believe that people should not be subject to torture in any circumstances but then came the outsourcing of prisoners to Egyptian and Syrian dungeons. Western governments used to believe that prisoners of war should not be subject to inhumane treatment but then came Abu Ghraib. Western governments used to believe that individuals had the right to privacy
but then came unauthorised wiretaps and surveillance. Western governments used to believe that individuals had the right to be told what they were charged with but then came 28 days pre-charge detention. Western governments used to believe in the freedom of speech but then came the planned offence of the ‘glorification of terrorism’ and the proscription of non violent groups. Western governments used to believe that people could defend themselves if they were invaded but then came the labelling of Afghan and Iraqi resistance as terrorist. Western governments used to believe that civilians should be spared the horrors of war but then came the use of white phosphorous and depleted uranium. Western governments used to believe that nuclear non proliferation was for all states as contained in the NPT but than came mini nukes and missile defence shields. Western governments used to believe that free and fair
elections provided absolute legitimacy but then came the Palestinian elections and Hamas. Of course there are a one or two ideals still left, the pursuit of expediency over principle for instance.

[IslamCity] Commentary: Let them (believers) forgive and pardon.

2006-01-30 Thread Curtis Sharif

Bismillah, Peace, Curtis SharifFriday Nasiha - Issue # 363Zul-Hijja 26, 1426, A.H. - January 27, 2006, C.E.Living the Quran Al-Nur (The Light) Chapter 24: Verse 22Forgiveness"Let them (believers) forgive and pardon. Do you not wish that Allah should forgive you? Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." Forgiveness includes many features, apart from the fundamental sense of overlooking others' lapses. It also covers self-restraint, patience and forbearance. As two persons foster a relationship, it is natural that they may do something which may cause unpleasantness, bitterness, pain and torment to the other party. It naturally angers them and they may legitimately seek revenge for it. However, the love permeating their relationship will help them
overcome their anger. They will be so broad in their outlooks as to restrain their anger, which will, in turn, prevent any retaliation. In this way, they would rather exercise self-restraint and forgive one another. This was a valuable feature of the Prophet's conduct. Allah directed him to profess and practise forgiveness (Al-Imran 3:134). It is perfectly lawful to take revenge for any wrong done to someone. However, one who pardons is entitled to Allah's special reward (al-Shura 42:40). Allah will pardon those who forgive others. It is, of course, hard to develop this trait to pardon. Undoubtedly, it calls for firm resolve. However, forgiveness certainly improves mutual relations and is reckoned as an important trait.Source:"Inter Personal Relations" - Khurram Murad, pp. 16-18__Do You Yahoo!?Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail

[IslamCity] Mighty US Creates New Type of Outsourcing - TORTURE

2006-01-30 Thread Alan Border

“When it is said to them: "Make not mischief on the earth," they say: "Why, we only Want to make peace!" Of a surety, they are the ones who make mischief, but they realise (it) not.” (Al-Qur'an, 2:11-12 - Al-Baqara [The Cow]) Investigator: U.S. 'Outsourced' Torture By JAN SLIVA, Associated Press Writer 37 minutes agohttp://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060124/ap_on_re_eu/eu_cia_secret_prisonsSTRASBOURG, France - The head of a European investigation into alleged CIA secret prisons in Europe said Tuesday there was evidence the United States outsourced torture to other countries and it was likely European governments knew about it. But Swiss senator Dick Marty said there was no formal evidence so far of the existence of clandestine detention centers in Romania or Poland as alleged by the New York-based Human Rights Watch."There is a great deal of coherent, convergent evidence pointing to the existence of a system of 'relocation' or 'outsourcing' of torture," Marty said in a report presented to the Council of Europe, the human rights watchdog investigating the alleged secret prisons. The report said more than 100 terror suspects may have been transferred to countries where they faced torture or ill treatment in recent years. "It is highly unlikely that European governments, or at least their intelligence services, were unaware," Marty said in the report.
The Council of Europe launched its probe after allegations surfaced in November that U.S. agents interrogated key al-Qaida suspects at clandestine prisons in eastern Europe and transported some suspects to other countries passing through Europe.Human Rights Watch identified Romania and Poland as possible sites of secret U.S.-run detention facilities. Both countries have denied involvement, and Marty's report said there was no formal, irrefutable evidence of secret CIA prisons in either country, or anywhere else in Europe. Clandestine detention centers would violate European human
rights treaties."On the other hand, it has been proved that individuals have been abducted, deprived of their liberty and all rights and transported to different destinations in Europe to be handed over to countries in which they have suffered degrading treatment and torture," the report said.In the report, Marty analyzed the cases of an Egyptian cleric allegedly kidnapped in
Italy and sent back to Egypt and a German captured in Macedonia and taken to Afghanistan. Last week, Italy's justice minister formally asked the United States to
allow Italian prosecutors to question 22 purported CIA operatives they accuse of kidnapping the Egyptian cleric, Osama Moustafa Hassan Nasr, in 2003 from a Milan street.Prosecutors say Nasr, believed to belong to an Islamic terror group, was taken by the CIA to a joint U.S.-Italian air base, flown to Germany and then to Egypt, where he claims he was tortured. Khaled al-Masri, a German citizen of Lebanese descent, is suing the CIA for wrongful imprisonment and torture, saying he was seized in Macedonia on Dec. 31, 2003, and taken by CIA agents to Afghanistan, where he was allegedly abused before being released in Albania in May 2004.Citing an American lawyer, Marty also said six Bosnians were abducted by American agents on Bosnian soil and taken to the U.S. detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, despite a Bosnian judgment ordering their release.AB [EMAIL PROTECTED] "For to us will be their return; then it will be for us to call them to account." Palestinians Deserve Respect, Support:
  Guardian

Supporters of Hamas celebrate the
election results inside the Al-Aqsa mosque compound in Al-Quds.
(Reuters)
  CAIRO, January 27, 2006 (IslamOnline.net) – The
Palestinians deserve respect and support as their real democratic
legislative elections proved that civil society in Palestine is more
vibrant than anywhere else in the region and owes nothing to Washington's
selective efforts to promote democracy out there, Britain's
mass-circulation the Guardian commented on Friday, January
  27.
"Today's priority is to accept that Palestinians have
spoken freely. They deserve respect and support," the British daily
  said.
It said that Wednesday's election proved that the
Palestinian politics has its own dynamics, dictated not by outside
pressure but the social and economic demands of ordinary people in
  appalling conditions.
The resistance group Hamas swept the Palestinian
legislative elections, winning 76 seats in the 133-seat Palestinian
Legislative Council, nearly 57.6 percent of the seats up for
  grabs.
The daily said that the elections were a more
impressive _expression_ of democracy and freedom than any other in the
  Middle East.
"The poll was a more impressive display of democracy
than any other in the region, outstripping last year's votes in Lebanon
and Iraq both in turnout and the range of views that candidates
  represented.
"Whereas in Iraq parties that opposed the occupation
had to downplay or even obscure their views, Palestinian supporters of
armed resistance to Israel's expansionist strategies were able to run
  openly," it said.
  Much Fuss
The British daily said Europeans were making much fuss
about Hamas's refusal to accept Israel.
"History and international politics do not march in
tidy simultaneous steps. For decades Israel refused even to recognize the
existence of the Palestinian people, just as Turkey did not recognize the
  Kurds," it said.
The paper said until 15 years ago the Palestinians had
to be smuggled to international summits as part of Jordan's
  delegation.
The Guardian said that Hamas could disarm
itself and recognize Israel in future.
"That will be the end of the process of establishing a
just modus vivendi for Israelis and Palestinians in the Middle East. It
  cannot be the first step."
On Thursday, the United States and European Union have
stepped up pressures on Hamas to accept Israel after the group's stunning
  election victory.
  "Encouraging Hamas"
The British daily further urged the Europeans to
"encourage Hamas" and not to get hung up on wrong issues such as the armed

[IslamCity] Custodian of Israel Wary of Hamas Role in Parliament

2006-01-30 Thread Alan Border

U.S. Wary of Hamas Role in ParliamentBy BARRY SCHWEID, AP Diplomatic Writer 14 minutes agohttp://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060126/ap_on_go_pr_wh/us_mideast_2;_ylt=At3ijMI0Wo9a.rWYUlga0nEUvioA;_ylu=X3oDMTBiMW04NW9mBHNlYwMlJVRPUCUl(Comments in RED are Mine)WASHINGTON - The Bush administration, in advance of results showing that Hamas held sway in Palestinian parliamentary elections, renewed its pledge not to deal with the organization the State Department considers a terrorist group. President Bush was quoted in a story published Thursday as saying the United States would have nothing to do with the militant group until it abandons its stated intention of annihilating the state of Israel. Hamas has taken responsibility for several attacks on Israel. In an interview in The
Wall Street Journal, Bush said of Hamas: "The answer is: Not until you renounce your desire to destroy Israel will we deal with you." Bush scheduled a news conference Thursday morning at the White House. The office of Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas said Thursday that Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice had called Abbas to praise Palestinian democracy and assert that the
United States supports him and his policies. "She asserted to him that U.S. administration will continue supporting the elected president and his policies," said Nabil Abu Rdeneh, an Abbas aide. Abbas, who was elected separately a year ago and remains president, must ask the largest party in the new parliament — presumably Hamas — to form the new government. In Washington Thursday, a State Department official confirmed that Rice had telephoned Abbas. This official, declining to be identified because Rice had not yet commented publicly, said Abbas was still the head of the Palestinian Authority and continues to have an important role to play. The initial speculation Wednesday — as Hamas ran neck-and-neck with Abbas' Fatah Party — was
that Hamas would steer clear of a post involving peacemaking efforts and would be consigned to domestic ministries such as education. But Hamas' defeat of Fatah could change that calculation in a way that might put pressure on Washington to find a way to both uphold aversion to the militant group and also promote peacemaking.Rice is due to meet in London on Monday with U.N., Russian and European leaders as the so-called "Quartet" evaluates the results and tries to decide how to proceed with peacemaking
effortsComments – Mine The hostile reaction of America Europe to Hamas’s victory shows the hypocrisy of the west towards the so called democratization of the Muslim world. What they actually want is governments in Muslim countries which will be subservient to the west follow its dictates. The west to cover up its War on Terror (War on Muslims Islam) is using the ruse of bringing freedom democracy to the Muslim world. The reaction also highlights that the protection welfare of the Israel takes precedent over everything else (even above the welfare of their countrymen) for
America its allies.AB [EMAIL PROTECTED] "For to us will be their return; then it will be for us to call them to account." (Holy Quran 88:25-26)

[IslamCity] THE REALITY OF MATTAM

2006-01-30 Thread Saba Khan
THE REALITY OF MATAM

There has not been a holy revolution which was
distorted as much as the shi'ites distorted the
revolution of Al-Hussain in the pretext of loving him,
Further more these ceremonies are the cause of bloody
conflicts between the shi'ites and the Sunnis of
Pakistan, where hundreds of innocent people from both
sides have been killed. I feel it is very important
that people should know what is the reality of MATAM.
The Tradition is still common in the gathering held
for Imam Hussain in the Shi'ites world, It is
imperative to end these gatherings by weeping for
Al-Hussain because He who cries or tries to cry for
Al-Hussain, Heaven becomes obligatory for him This is
a statement which is found in the books of narrations
and is attributed to the Imaams. But God forbid that
such a statement should have come from an Imaam. The
Boyheys, who ruled Iran and Iraq in the name of
protecting the khilafah of Banu-Al-Abbas, played a
vital role in strengthening the tradition of
celebrating the day of 'Ashura'. However, celebrating
the day of 'Ashura' became a general tradition and a
part of the Shi'ites existence during the time of Shah
Ismail Al-Safawi. He forced Iran in to Shi'aism and
created in it a denominational unity to squench the
desires of the neighboring Ottoman KHILAFAH. In the
Safawi palace, every year the first ten days of
Muharram used to be declared as days of mourning and
the Shah used to receive the mourners on the day of
'Ashura'. On that day a special celebration used to be
held in the royal palace. Many people used to gather
for those celebrations, and the Shah himself use

to attend them also, Shah Abbas Al-Safawi, whose rule
lasted for fifty years and who was the shrewdest most
powerful and most cruel of the Safawi Shahs, used to
wear black on the day of 'Ashura' and put mud on his
face as a sign of mourning for Al-Hussain. He used to
lead the marchers in the streets, But We do not know
for sure when the tradition of striking the shoulders
with chains on the day of 'Ashura' came into
existence. This tradition spread into Shi'ites areas
such as Iran and Iraq, and other region as well.
However, there is no doubt that striking the heads
with swords and causing blood to gush out as an act of
mourning for Al-Hussain on the day of 'Ashura' came to
Iran and Iraq from India during the British occupation
of those countries. The British exploited the
ignorance, simplicity and the great love the Shi'ites
had for Al-Hussain. They even taught them to hit their
heads
with sharp objects. Until very recently, the British
embassies in both Tehran and Baghdad used to finance
the demonstrations for Al-Hussain. This demonstration
portrayed an ugly image in the streets and
neighborhoods. The purpose behind the British colonial
policies in their support for this ugly tradition,
which has been grossly exploited by them, was to
provide an acceptable justification to the British
people to counteract the opposition by some
independent newspapers and by some countries against
the British occupation of India. The people of these
countries were made to appear as savages who needed a
civilizing force like the British to teach them human
values and liberate them from ignorance and savagery.
British and European newspapers used to publish
pictures of the demonstrators marching in the streets
on the day of 'Ashura' with thousands of people
hitting their shoulders with chains until they bled,
and striking their heads with swords and other sharp
objects until blood gushed out. The policy makers of
the colonial powers used to use these pictures to
justify the colonization of these countries under the
pretext of wanting to educate the people of these
countries and bring them toward civilization and
progress, as dictated by their feelings of moral
obligation towards their fellow human beings. It is
said that once Yasin Al-Hashmi, the Prime Minister of
Iraq during the British occupation of that country,
visited

London to negotiate with the British to end their
occupation of his country. The British said to him
:We are in Iraq to help the Iraqi people achieve
happiness and give up savagery. This statement caused
the Prime Minister to become angry and he left the
room where they were holding the negotiations. The
British politely apologized to him and respectfully
asked him to see a documentary film about Iraq. When
he watched the film, it turned out to be a film of the
demonstration held on the day of 'Ashura' in the
streets of Al-Najaf, Karbala and Al-Kazimiyah. The
film was full of horrible and sickening scenes which
included striking the bodies with chains. The British,
by

showing that film to the Prime Minister were asking
him whether a
cultured nation even with degree of civilization would
do this to itself This article is taken from a scholar
of Iran Imam Dr. Musa Musawi. Here I want to mention
something amusing, yet full of wisdom and bright
ideas. I heard it from one of the Shi'ite scholars and

[IslamCity] Hamas Win Shocks World Leaders of Israel

2006-01-30 Thread Alan Border

“O ye who believe! take not the Jews and the Christians for your friends and protectors: They are but friends and protectors to each other. And he amongst you that turns to them (for friendship) is of them. Verily Allah guideth not a people unjust.” (Al-Qur'an, 5:51 Al-Maeda [The Table, The Table Spread]) Hamas Win Shocks World LeadersBy JOHN LEICESTER, Associated Press Writer 15 minutes agohttp://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060126/ap_on_re_mi_ea/world_hamas_1;_ylt=AphPKvd5.YDN_YUyvXAji60UvioA;_ylu=X3oDMTBiMW04NW9mBHNlYwMlJVRPUCUlPARIS - World leaders, uneasy at the prospect of a Hamas-led Palestinian government, immediately
exerted pressure on the Islamic militants Thursday to recognize Israel and renounce violence as a precondition for ties. France noted that the European Union lists Hamas as a terrorist organization, as does the United States.
Italy said the militant group's resounding — and surprising — victory in legislative elections Wednesday could indefinitely postpone any chance of Israeli-Palestinian peace and make the creation of a Palestinian state more difficult."It is a very, very, very bad result," Italian news agencies quoted Premier Silvio Berlusconi as saying. Concern crossed political divides, with traditional supporters of the Palestinian cause — such as
Italy's center-left opposition — among those expressing concern. In the Arab world, some were jubilant. Hamas' win topped the news on state-run radio in Iran — which is accused by Israel and the United States of supplying Hamas and other Palestinian militants with weapons and funding. "This is a victory to all the region's free people," said Ayyoub Muhanna, a 29-year-old who owns a spare parts shop in Lebanon. "The Palestinians gave their vote to the party that gave of its blood."Sweden's foreign minister, Laila Freivalds, said Hamas' showing was "a protest against those in power who have not done enough, a reaction to the incapacity to lead the political process forward." The dilemma for Western democracies was compounded by Hamas' seemingly fair-and-square win — American monitors led by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter said the elections were "well-administered.""The whole of the international community has the
responsibility to accept the outcome of any fair and democratic election," said British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw. "But in this case Hamas has a clear responsibility to understand that with democracy goes a rejection of violence." British Prime Minister Tony Blair's spokesman was blunter: "We can only do business with people who renounce terrorism," he said.Israel, the United
States and the European Union have said they would not deal with a government led by Hamas, which has carried out dozens of suicide bombings, seeks Israel's destruction and has said that it opposes peace talks and will not disarm.Freivalds, the Swedish minister, said the 25-nation EU will not be able to cooperate with Hamas unless it changes its policies. The French prime minister laid out what he described as
"indispensable" conditions: Renouncing violence, accepting progress toward peace, recognizing Israel and recognizing international accords, notably the Oslo peace accords.EU foreign ministers meeting Monday will discuss the bloc's response. The so-called Quartet — the United Nations, the
United States, Russia and the EU — which drafted a road map to prod Israel and the Palestinians into a negotiated peace settlement, will also meet Monday to assess. "These (election) results may confront us with an entirely new situation which will need to be analyzed," said EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana. The EU has given millions of euros (dollars) in aid to the Palestinian Authority to help reconstruction efforts in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank — funding that was called into question following the Hamas win. "It is obvious that the EU would never countenance funding a regime that continued an armed fight against Israel," said Ignasi Guardans, a Spanish member of the European Parliament. "But we cannot push for democracy and then deny the result of free and fair elections."AP bureaus in Europe and the Middle East contributed to this report.AB [EMAIL PROTECTED] "For to us will be their return; then it will be for us to call them to account."

[IslamCity] Continued Oppression of Free Speech at York University

2006-01-30 Thread Niagara Palestinian Association

Montreal Muslim News [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Date: Fri, 27 Jan 2006 03:52:03 +0100To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]From: Montreal Muslim News [EMAIL PROTECTED]Subject: Students challenge York policyStudents challenge York policyhttp://www.excal.on.ca/index.php?option=com_contenttask=viewid=1304Itemid=2Jan 25, 2006 - Written by Michael Sitayeb, Assistant News Editor (Excalibur)Students gathered in Vari Hall on Monday in clear defiance of York University president Lorna Marsden, to protest and commemorate the anniversary of the controversial events on Jan. 20, 2005.Nearly a year ago, students protesting Israeli policies in the Middle East were assaulted when campus security and Toronto police broke up a demonstration in Vari Hall. The event resulted in a sustained
outrage from students, organizations and even some faculty arguing that York suppresses free speech. Conflict erupted in other quarters, with senators denouncing the violence on campus and Marsden fighting off criticism in a three-hour-long senate meeting. York claims that the demonstration had been disrupting class in nearby lecture halls with some protestors using megaphones to speak to the crowd."Her administration's security personnel were joined by police in violently assaulting a student demonstration in the Vari Hall rotunda," said a press release from the Grass Roots Anti-Imperialist Network (GRAIN), also one of the main organizers of the protest last year on Jan. 20.York security has also come under scrutiny. Critics allege they were responsible for calling the police to intrude on campus.Since then, commissions and various committees have developed and reviewed policies for the use of campus space for activities and events. On Jan.
13, the administration published "Message from president Marsden". The press release was designed to report on progress from the committees looking into student space issues. In response to the protest, the President commissioned the Working Group on the Temporary Use of University Space. It defined three goals for establishing a policy: The student space must be provided based on any effects to academics and the purpose of the university as a place for learning, the right to free speech and the safety of the York community. "GRAIN rejects Marsden's spin on fact," said the press release from GRAIN, responding to the president's message. "Despite continued efforts by the administration to erect bureaucratic barriers to anti-imperialist and other dissident activities, students have organized many successful events, and more are in the works . . . her administration's authority on these is extremely weak."Concurrently, an Office of Temporary Use of University
Space has been created to examine applications for space by different organizations and assesses their viability."We've raised the standard. Things were quite chaotic before we had these regulations in place," says Richard Fischer, chief marketing and communications officer at York. "Ninety-nine per cent of event bookings have been done without any problems," he says. Many have criticized this process, however."This is disastrous . . . there has been a major push to erect bureaucratic barriers for progressive events," says Dan Freeman-Maloy, a member of GRAIN. "It's very clearly politically-driven and not based on anti-disruption."Maloy states that many barriers hold smaller organizations from having protests and other events. Generally, groups have to submit their requests one month ahead of time and provide a list of speakers and volunteers that will be present at the event. High security fees sometimes required by York are also a
barrier to running events."It's becoming increasingly difficult to book spaces. Most spaces are booked and overwhelmed because there are so many student clubs," says Omari Mason, president of the York Federation of Students (YFS). "I think most organizations have to book space that is ‘unbookable' so to speak," he adds. The YFS is doing just that this week. Most of the events in Vari Hall are not permitted by the Temporary Use of University Space policy because the area is designated as a learning space, yet they have set up tables and commemoration events everyday from Monday until today. The York administration has submitted a draft of the report on use of space."We're getting mixed signals from the administration . . . the draft report really did not reflect our priorities," says Mason. The final version of the report was to be presented at the senate meeting tomorrow, but the meeting is now cancelled and the committee will likely be
reporting in February.Meanwhile, York has engaged in talks with police services chief Bill Blair to discuss the events of Jan. 20, 2005"The recent message takes pride in a conversation she had with the police chief, as if the administration was somehow protecting us from police violence," said the GRAIN press release. -GRAIN plans to launch another protest today to commemorate the events last year

Hamas swept to victory over the long-dominant Fatah party on Thursday in
Palestinian parliamentary polls, and Israel immediately ruled out talks with any
government involving the Islamic militant group.
Hamas won an overwhelming majority in the 132-seat legislature, taking 76
seats to Fatah's 43 in Wednesday's election, the official vote count showed. It
gives Hamas the power to shape and possibly even lead the next cabinet.
The landslide took even Hamas officials by surprise.
"When we took part in the elections we honestly expected to win but we did
not expect to win by so much," said Osama Hamdan, the group's representative in
Lebanon.
"Sixty seats makes a winner, but winning by this large majority means the
Palestinian people have given us a high level of confidence and put a heavy
responsibility in our hands."
The biggest party in parliament can veto the president's choice of prime
minister. Hamas called for immediate talks among factions to discuss a new
government and Palestinian officials said President Mahmoud Abbas would ask
Hamas to form one.
But Fatah leaders said they wanted no part in such a coalition. Firing in the
air, Fatah gunmen in Gaza City vented their anger at Hamas's victory. They
blamed Abbas and party bigwigs for the loss and called on them to resign.
In a clear message to Hamas, Abbas stressed that any government would have to
follow his own program to negotiate with Israel for Palestinian statehood. The
moderate Fatah leader has said he might resign if he cannot pursue a peace
agenda.
U.S. President George W. Bush appealed to Abbas to stay in office and vowed
Washington would not deal with an armed Palestinian group advocating Israel's
destruction. Hamas rebuffed demands to disarm and change its charter.
"Today we woke up and the sky was a different color. We have entered a new
era," Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat, of Fatah, said after Hamas
claimed victory.
Fatah loyalists clashed with triumphant Hamas supporters who briefly raised
their green flags at the entrance to the Palestinian parliament in Ramallah.
Fatah activists trampled on one of the banners when it was lowered. Shots were
fired nearby.
In Gaza City, Fatah gunmen fired volleys in the air and demanded the
resignation of Abbas and the party's old guard. Hamas told its supporters to
leave the streets to avoid clashes.
With peace talks stalled since 2000, and Israel and Hamas bitter enemies,
Israel's Interim Prime Minister Ehud Olmert could opt for unilateral moves to
determine Israel's borders on land that the Palestinians want for a state. It
has already pulled its settlers out of the Gaza Strip without negotiations.

Israel rejects talks
Olmert, who took over from Ariel Sharon after he suffered a stroke three
weeks ago, said in a statement Israel would not negotiate with a Palestinian
government that included members "of an armed terror organization that calls for
Israel's destruction."
Hamas, whose support among Palestinians is based partly on its suicide
bombings against Israel, geared its election campaign to public frustration over
Fatah's failure to achieve statehood and its reputation for corruption.
The Islamic group's charity network in the impoverished Gaza Strip and in the
West Bank also boosted its popularity.
"Hamas did not win because people loved Hamas, but because people were taking
revenge against the past years of Fatah rule," said Adel al-Helo, 41, a Gaza
shopkeeper.
Leaders of the EU, the biggest donor to the aid-dependent Palestinian
Authority, said that Hamas must renounce violence and recognize Israel or risk
international isolation.
In Washington, Bush said Hamas's victory was a sign that Palestinians were
unhappy with the status quo and showed democracy at work, which was positive for
the Middle East.
But he stuck firmly to the U.S. view of Hamas as a terrorist group. It has
carried out nearly 60 suicide bombings in Israel since the latest uprising began
over five years ago.
"I don't see how you can be a partner in peace if you advocate the
destruction of a country as part of your platform," Bush told a news conference.
"You can't be a partner in peace if ... your party has got an armed wing."

[IslamCity] Book: Women in Islam :Islam means justice for all creatures , and teachs to treat each other with mercy and compassion

Said Jama [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatu ,The best words are the words of Allah/swt , the best guidance is the guidance of prophet Mohammad /peace and blessing of Allah be upon him , his companions , his household , and his followers till the last day. After this preamble , Islam means justice for all creatures , and teachs to treat each other with mercy and compassion. I would reccomend that you read the book on
this subject of Dr. Jamal A. Badawi THE STATUS OF WOMAN IN ISLAM http://www.iad.org/books/S-women.htmlHe (God) it is who did create you from a single soul and therefrom did create his mate, that he might dwell with her (in love)...(Qur'an 7:189) The Creator of heavens and earth: He has made for you pairs from among yourselves ...Qur'an 42:1 1 And Allah has given you mates of your own nature, and has given you from your mates, children and grandchildren, and has made provision of good things for you. Is it then in vanity that they believe
and in the grace of God that they disbelieve? Qur'an 16:72 Every soul will be (held) in pledge for its deeds" (Qur'an 74:38). It also states: ...So their Lord accepted their prayers, (saying): I will not suffer to be lost the work of any of you whether male or female. You proceed one from another ...(Qur'an 3: 195). Whoever works righteousness, man or woman, and has faith, verily to him will We give a new life that is good and pure, and We will bestow on such their reward according to the their actions. (Qur'an 16:97, see also 4:124). Among the most impressive verses in the Qur'an about marriage is the following. "And among His signs is this: That He created mates for you from yourselves that you may find rest, peace of mind in them, and He ordained between you love and mercy. Lo, herein indeed are signs for people who reflect." (Qur'an 30:2 1). On tolerance..The Qur'an states: "...But consort with them in kindness, for if you hate them it may happen that you hate a thing wherein God has placed much good." (Qur'an 4: l9). Prophet Muhammad. (Peace and blessing of Allah be upon him ) said: The best of you is the best to his family and I am the best among you to my family. The most perfect believers are the best in conduct and best of you are those who are best to their wives. (Ibn-Hanbal, No. 7396) Behold, many women came to Muhammad's wives complaining against their husbands (because they beat them) - - those (husbands) are not the best of you.The Prophet's Disapproval of Women BeatersPatient behavior was the practice of the Prophet, even when his wife dared to address him harshly. Once his mother-in-law- saw her daughter strike him with her fist on his noble chest. When the enraged mother -in-law began to reproach her daughter, the Prophet smilingly said, "Leave her alone; they do worse than that." And once Abu Bakr, his father-in-law, was invited to settle some misunderstanding between him and Aishah. The Prophet said to her, "Will you speak, or shall I speak?" Aisha said, "You speak, but do not say except the truth." Abu Bakr was so outraged that he immediately struck her severely, forcing her to run and seek protection behind the back of the Prophet. Abu Bakr said, "O you the enemy of herself! Does the Messenger of Allah say but the truth?" The Prophet said, "O Abu Bakr, we did not invite you for this [harsh dealing with Aishah], nor did we anticipate it." quoted in: Mutual Rights and
ObligationsAnd Allah (swt) knows best.Source: http://www.maryams.netAnd among His signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that you may dwell in tranquillity with them, and He has put love and mercy between your hearts. Undoubtedly in these are signs for those who reflect. (30:21) Our lord, grant us wives and
offspring who will be the apples of our eyes and guide us to be models for the righteous" Wa salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatu.

A Mosque goer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and complained that it made no sense to go to Mosque . "I've gone for 30 years now,"he wrote, "and in that time I have heard something like 3,000 Lectures.
But for the life of me, I can't remember a single one of them. So, I thinkI'm wasting my time and the Imams are wasting theirs by giving Lectures at all." This started a real controversy in the "Letters to the Editor" column, much to the delight of the editor. It went on for weeks until someone wrote this clincher. "I've been married for 30 years now. In that time my wife has cooked some 32,000 meals. But for the life of me, I cannot recall the entire menu for a single one of those meals. But I do know this: They all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed to do my work. If my wife had not given me these meals, I would be physically dead today. Likewise, if I had not gone to Mosque for nourishment, I would be spiritually dead
today!" When you are DOWN to nothing Allah is UP to something! Faith sees the invisible, believes the incredible and receives the impossible!
Thank Allah for our physical AND our spiritual nourishment! All right .. now that you're done reading .. send it on!!! I think everyone should read this!! "When Shaitaan is knocking at your door, simply say, " Allah, could you please get that for me?Count the days to Christmas with the MSN Christmas Countdown Calendar!
