The Government pays 'lip service' to Christianity and favours Islam and other
minority religions, according to a report commissioned by the Church of England.

The damning study criticises the policies of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown for
focusing 'intently' on minority beliefs whilst neglecting the Anglican faith.

It also accuses Labour of ignoring the breakdown in society and failing to
recognise the Church's potential contribution to public affairs.

The report says: 'We encountered on the part of the Government a significant
lack of understanding, or interest in, the Church of England's current or
potential contribution in the public sphere.

'Indeed we were told that Government had consciously decided to focus... almost
exclusively on minority religions.'

The report calls for a 'Minster for Religion' to utilise the untapped reserves
of volunteers in churches and charities and accuses the Government of
'religious illiteracy'.

It comes days after Dr John Sentamu, the Archbishop of York, accused Gordon
Brown of sacrificing liberty for misguided notions of equality and betraying
New Labour's mantra of 'rights and responsibilities'.

The 180-page report, entitled 'Moral, But No Compass' shows how church leaders
feel betrayed by the Government.

Mr Brown - who emphasised the strength of his 'moral compass' on becoming Prime
Minister - is in particular likely to be stung by the title of the report.

The Government will find it hard to dismiss its findings as it represents the
opinions of 70 Church of England bishops as well as more than 250 MPs, peers
and academics.

In more bad news for Labour the study also praises the Conservatives for their
'strident' plans to tackle poverty.

This comments mark a change in the relationship between the Church and the
Tories.

Relations have been strained since senior clergy blamed Margaret Thatcher for
Britain's deepening spiritual decline in the 1980s.

The Bishop of Hulme, the Right Rev Stephen Lowe commissioned the The Von Hugel
Institute at Cambridge to carry out the study

It was reported last night that the Archbishops of Canterbury and York are
among those who have endorsed the findings.

However, a Church of England spokesman said church leaders have not yet seen
the report and will respond on Monday when it is officially published.

The spokesman went on: 'The hard-hitting report raises issues of considerable
importance, the authors say, and makes recommendations that challenge the
Government to recognise the Churches' involvement and potential in public
service reform.

'Authors Francis Davis, Elizabeth Paulhus and Andrew Bradstock will present
their report to the Church on Monday when Bishop Stephen Lowe will respond.'

  While the vast majority of Palestinians have welcomed the 
Egyptian-mediated ceasefire between the Hamas movement  and Israel, the 
American-backed fifth column within Fatah is viewing the tahdiaa  or  brief 
calm in the Gaza Strip  as an existential threat to its very survival.

  Since the conclusion of the fragile  ceasefire nearly ten 
days ago, these rouge elements have spared no effort trying to thwart the truce 
by firing primitive projectiles across the border. They also have been accusing 
Hamas of betraying the resistance and undermining the vital interests of the 
Palestinian people.

  Of course, the purported  concern for  the resistance is 
plainly insincere and disingenuous.  It is an exposed and cheap distraction 
aimed at blurring the real purpose of these thugs,  namely  to provoke Israel 
to revoke the ceasefire and carry out an all-out invasion of Gaza to destroy 
Hamas and hand over the coastal territory to Israel's and America's agents.

  Isn't  exactly  this goal that these Fatah leaders have 
been intimating to western news agencies and Israeli correspondents, always on 
condition of anonymity.

  We all know and the bulk of Palestinians know that  these 
mercenaries are first and foremost   answerable to US General Keith Dayton, who 
 effectively serves as American High Commissioner in Ramallah, and  is himself  
answerable to  Elliot Abram, who is more or less AIPAC's representative in the 
Bush administration.

  Abrams has always worked strenuously toward igniting the 
flames of  civil war between the western-backed moderates and the extremist 
elements led by Hamas. He had actually made several public statements to that 
effect, but the self-absorbed regime in Ramallah wouldn't pay attention to 
that, preferring to believe that Abrams was only making jokes.

  The Bush administration's  goal was from the very inception , 
 and probably still i   to push the Palestinian society toward a sort of 
violent and bloody implosion that would eventually allow Israel and the neocons 
in Washington to liquidate the Palestinian cause, once and for all.

  This is exactly what Abrams had in mind last summer when he 
okayed the transfer of huge sums of money and shipments of arms to America's 
man in Gaza, Muhammed Dhalan.

  We all know the rest of the story as Hamas moved swiftly and 
decisively to pre-empt Abrams'  criminal designs by putting an end  to Dahlan's 
coup-in-the-making and ousting his men and cohorts from Gaza.

  Defeated, embittered and  expelled, these people have never 
stopped hatching plots to sow the seeds of civil war and violence in the Gaza 
Strip.

  They tried every conceivable conspiracy to beat  Hamas, 
effectively on Israel's behalf,  even as the Israeli occupation army was  
murdering Palestinian civilians in droves.

  At one point the Fifth Column in Fatah seemed fully embedded 
with Israel in the common battle against Hamas. Their collusion  with Israel 
and the US in maintaining the harsh blockade on  Gaza's 1.5 million inhabitants 
speaks volumes. It constitutes a stigma of shame on the foreheads of the 
traitors and their supporters  that will stay with them for the rest of their 
lives.

  Having failed to dislodge Hamas, these traitors are now  
trying to sabotage the ceasefire in Gaza under the rubric of resistance. This 
happens as tens of thousands of Fatah forces are working in close 
coordination with  the Israeli occupation army to hound and eradicate real  
freedom fighters, including Fatah's own,  in the West Bank. Obviously, this is 
done  on Israel's behalf and in order to obtain a certificate of good conduct 
from the likes of Bush, Rice, Dayton and Abrams.

  I realize that Fatah is not a monolithic movement. I also 
know for sure  that the movement includes many dignified and patriotic elements 
that reject the shameful behavior of  certain elements within the group  that 
claim to be speaking and acting  in the name of Fatah when they  are 
effectively at Israel's and the CIA's beck and call.

  Unfortunately, these rouge elements have the money (American 
dollars)  and the wherewithal not only to corrode Fatah from within but also to 
destabilize the internal Palestinian front, all in the service of Israel and 
her diabolical designs against our people and enduring just cause.

  Hence, it is imperative that  true patriots within Fatah move 
swiftly and decisively to undercut these fifth-columnists and prevent them from 
morphing

The writer who brought chick-lit to Arabia tells about passion behind the
veil

Saudi Arabia has a new minister for women. Shes 25, likes designer labels,
lipstick and cars. Rajaa Alsanea is, of course, not in government, for in
her country its not really the done thing for females to air their
opinions. They are not allowed to drive, let alone have employment or voting
rights.

Alsanea, however, has captured a vast constituency. She is a bestselling
author, the only chick-lit one from the Arab world, and as such she has
become a sort of spokeswoman for 21st-century Saudi women. Her book, Girls
of Riyadh, about to be published in Britain by Fig Tree, tells the stories
of four middle-class young women searching for love and just a little bit of
fun in a suffocating culture.

Its hardly Jilly Cooper  the references to sex are coy with lots of talk
of yearning and disappointment  but with tales of the girls drinking (very
small sips of Dom Pérignon) and  gasp  sitting in the drivers seat of a
car, it caused a scandal. This is a country, remember, where a woman might
be stoned for kissing a man in public.

Alsanea has received death threats by e-mail and many tried to suppress her
book. At one point, black market versions of this Arabic version of Sex and
the City changed hands for £300.

I didnt think about breaking any taboos or being a rebel. I wanted to
describe how people find ways to get around some of the traditions. Young
women I know want to be modern, hip, stylish and fall in love, the same as
women everywhere. I was never trying to cause a scandal, she tells me over
tea at the Dorchester hotel in London.

Alsanea is modestly and fashionably turned out in expensive, loosely cut
jeans, a white fitted jacket and a coordinating white, silken hijab. There
are a couple of lightly Wagish touches  a diamond watch with a pink strap,
a Gucci bag and a French manicure  but she is a class act.

In an American accent she speaks softly, in perfect English with impeccable
sentences: I started writing when I was 18 and I knew I wanted to be a
published author. I have been blessed with a very supportive family and we
were encouraged to express ourselves. Her father, who worked for the
information ministry in Kuwait, died when she was eight and Alsanea and her
five older siblings were raised by her mother in Riyadh: As I got older, I
wanted to write something I would enjoy reading. I just wrote about what I
saw around me  what the girls I knew were like.

After her book was eventually published in 2005, young women began to see
Alsanea as their mouthpiece: At one point I was getting 1,000 e-mails a
day. Women who were divorced, women who were married in an arranged way and
didnt like their husbands; those who were struggling with their families
were reaching out. Girls came up and hugged me and wanted to take pictures
with me. All of a sudden I felt it was my duty to take care of these people.


I knew that no one had really written about modern life in Saudi but 
perhaps because I was young  I didnt think it would be sensational.

Its hard to imagine this smart and beautiful girl ever being naive. Last
year she was voted the Arab worlds premier intellectual by Elaph, the
online magazine. All her siblings are either physicians or dentists and she
is a graduate student in dentistry, arguing that there is no money in being
a Saudi writer (I suspect she is an exception to this rule). She was savvy
enough not to send her manuscript to the Saudi information ministry, where
all books must be vetted before publication. Instead, she got her brother to
take it to publishers in more liberal Lebanon.

When she didnt hear from them immediately, she boldly sent her book to her
favourite writer, the poet Ghazi al-Gosaibi, a former UK ambassador and now
a Saudi government minister: He is an idol of mine and when he called me to

 Alhamdu Lillaahi Rabbil 'Aalameen was-Salaatu 
 was-Salaamu 'alaa Asrafil Anbiyaa'e wal Mursaleen.
 
 Wa Ba'd:
 
 Ibad Allah! The world of Islam today suffers from grave weaknesses! So weak is 
that world that Muslims are being driven our of their homes and from their 
homeland. Muslims are becoming refugees all over the world. Our Muslim sisters 
are being raped  with contemptuous disdain. Masaajid are being razed to the 
ground. Unarmed Muslims taking refuge in a Masjid are brutally murdered. They 
are being tortured in concentration camps and linger in refugee and squatter 
camps. Innocent Muslim blood continues to be shed on a daily basis and not a 
single eyelid is raised to bring this madness to an end. It would appear that 
we have not yet reached the stage of actual revival - not by a long stretch. As 
Muslims, there has not been much change in the practical aspect of our lives: 
no change, that is, in the direction of true unadulterated Islam. A strategy of 
mass education is urgently required. The objective situation must be described 
with candor. The Salihin shall inherit the earth [Surah Al Anbiya verse 105] 
says the Most Holy Qur'an, men who maintain poise in life and protect it from 
every form of exploitation - Verse 155 Surah Al An'am:
 
 And this is a Book which We have revealed
 As a blessing: so follow it and be righteous,
 that you may receive mercy.
 
 All over the world today millions of Muslims live in abject poverty, in 
destitution, under subjugation and oppression. We are victims of Islamophobia 
and xenophobia and a paralyzed world of Islam seems totally helpless to do 
anything about the plight of our nation. It is not difficult to recognise that 
Islam has been under siege  - not only today and not only since yesterday, but 
for several centuries now. The decay of Islamic civilization, the progressive 
weakening of faith in Islam, the ineffectiveness of the Islamic teachings in 
our daily lives - all this is almost entirely due to the fact that for 
centuries we who profess to be true Muslims have been out of touch with the 
true premises of Islamic Law. The helpless, the weak and despised world of 
Islam can do absolutely nothing to respond to the sufferings of innocent 
Muslims in Iraq, Palestine, Afghanistan, Kashmir, Chechnya, the Caucasus 
regions, Bosnia, Kosova and the Philippines.
 
 Fa ya Ayyuhan nas! The spirit of Islam is not being translated into our daily 
lives. The Islam that we call upon our fellowmen to adopt as their guide in 
life is not one and the same thing as that passed off under this name by some 
of the rulers in some Muslim nation states. They have no respect or regard for 
the Divine Laws of Islam as they seldom hesitate in breaking it at will. They 
feel no need to be faithful to Islam because they sometimes follow man-made 
laws borrowed from the West and sometimes the Divine Law as may suit their 
needs. They are the ones who have been cursed by Almighty Allah Subhanahu 
Wata'ala because they are guilty of injustice towards their fellowmen as well 
as Almighty Allah for they choose from either side not what is right according 
to them but only that which serves their personal ambitions, greed or lust.
 
 O you who believe! It is the purpose of the Most Noble and Glorious Qur'an to 
firmly implant awareness in our inner being and hearts, to transform our hearts 
and fashion us in such a way that we are inwardly impelled to perform deeds of 
value. Since a Muh'min depends for success in his or her striving on the 
infinite power of Almighty Allah Subhanahu Wata'ala, in Whom he or she places 
all his or her hope and reliance, the passing hardships and sorrows he or she 
encounters will never be able to darken his or her life, however difficult the 
path of the goal may appear. He or she will will even accept failure with 
equanimity, if that failure occurs on the path leading to Almighty Allah, and 
regard failure as being a kind of victory in itself. Whoever chooses Almighty 
Allah Subhanahahu Wata'ala as his or her protector and guardian will escape the 
darkness of bewilderment and misguidance for this has been made crystal clear 
to us in verse 257 of Surah Al-Baqara:
 
 Allah is the guardian of those who believe;
 He brings them forth from darkness into Light.
 
 We are living in a time when the need to centre our lives on the Most Holy 
Qur'an is most urgent and compelling. Without this we will never discover 
ourselves, we will never give meaning to our existence, and we will never find 
dignity in this world. Most importantly, we will never please our Glorious 
Creator and Maker. The Most Holy Qur'an is the ultimate arbiter of our destiny: 
be it our rise to the heights of glory and civilization or our fall into the 
bottomless pits of decay and ignominy, it will happen because of how we live 
with respect to Almighty Allah's Final

Republicans' presumptive nominee for president would be better prepared
than the Democrats' to lead the nation next January, Sen. Joe Lieberman
said that history shows the United States would likely face a terrorist
attack in 2009.

Lieberman, I-Conn., told Face The Nation host Bob Schieffer. Remember
that the truck bombing of the World Trade Center happened in the first
year of the Clinton administration. 9/11 happened in the first year of
the Bush administration.

Lieberman nonetheless distanced
himself from remarks by McCain chief strategist Charlie Black, who came
under criticism for suggesting in an interview that McCain's election
chances would be improved if a terrorist attack occurred before
November.

In a revealing statement, the Union Home Minister of state Prakash Jaisawal 
admitted to media that there has not been any progress in the investigation of 
terror blasts in the country including that of the recent Jaipur bombings.
This acceptance by the representative of the central government is key to any 
understanding of the way government approaches the investigation of the cases 
of terrorism in India. The frank confession by the union minister is an 
indirect acknowledgement of the utter incompetence of the Indian investigative 
agencies.
One month after the powerful serial blasts ripped through prime locations in 
the walled city of Jaipur, the investigative agencies are still groping in the 
dark to nail the terrorists responsible for the killing of 67 persons on 13th 
May.
Despite working on several leads the agencies have not reached anywhere near 
the architects of the bloody crime.
The Special Investigative Team (SIT) has not only completely failed to find any 
evidence to support its initial claim of Harkat-ul-Jihad-e-Islami (HuJi) of 
Bangladesh being involved in the blasts, but also retracted its earlier theory 
that RDX was used to trigger the explosion.
The claim made by a hitherto unknown outfit, Indian Mujahidin, taking 
responsibility for the blasts through an e-mail sent to media organization 
remains unverified.
The SIT is still not in a position to confirm or deny the existence of this 
group, raising the suspicion that the e-mail could have been a ploy to mislead 
the investigators.
The sketches of the seven suspects released by the police have not elicited any 
useful information from the public.
After harassing dozens of Bengali speaking Muslims and questioning or detaining 
about 500 people across the state the police have only arrested a cleric, from 
Bharatpur, Md. Illyas, on the charges of possessing fake passport and having 
disproportionate assets. However the SIT could not establish his involvement in 
the blasts.
In the background of these failures, what is very much baffling is that SIT’s 
attempts to gather evidence is aimed solely at pinpointing the blame on 
“Islamist” outfits, instead of looking into a host of other possibilities.
There are strong possibilities and reasons as many civil right groups argue 
that the hindutva organizations are behind this blast and many other terror 
blasts in India, as per the recent arrest of five activists of the Hindu Jan 
Jagriti Samiti is anything to go by. They were arrested in connection of Thane

One only hopes that the investigative agencies will read the covert message of 
the minister about their performance.

He prays and worships Allaah, but he is tempted by women
What can be done about one who prays and fasts and worships Allaah a great 
deal, and fears Him and obeys Him (as much as he can), but he is not able to 
control his natural impulses or stop himself from forming relationships with 
women or from committing sin sometimes, even though he tries hard to resist 
that. He is married with three children, two of whom are girls, and he has a 
good relationship with his wife.



Praise be to Allaah.  

The most important principle on which a person’s life is based is his faith in 
Allaah and the righteous deeds that are enjoined upon him. This is the only 
protection against loss in this life. Allaah says (interpretation of the 
meaning): 
“By Al‑‘Asr (the time).
2. Verily, man is in loss,
3. Except those who believe (in Islamic Monotheism) and do righteous good 
deeds, and recommend one another to the truth, and recommend one another to 
patience”
[al-‘Asr 103:1-3] 
This is also the means of attaining a good life in this world and in the 
Hereafter. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): 
“Whoever works righteousness — whether male or female — while he (or she) is a 
true believer (of Islamic Monotheism) verily, to him We will give a good life 
(in this world with respect, contentment and lawful provision), and We shall 
pay them certainly a reward in proportion to the best of what they used to do 
(i.e. Paradise in the Hereafter)”
[al-Nahl 16:97] 
But a person’s worship of his Lord should not be something seasonal or 
occasional, whereby he obeys his Lord at certain times or on certain occasions, 
then after that he does whatever he wants or feels like. Rather his worship 
should encompass his whole life. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): 
“Say (O Muhammad): ‘Verily, my Salaah (prayer), my sacrifice, my living, and my 
dying are for Allaah, the Lord of the ‘Aalameen (mankind, jinn and all that 
exists).
He has no partner. And of this I have been commanded, and I am the first of the 
Muslims’”
[al-An’aam 6:162-163] 
Because of that the effects of this faith and worship should appear in the 
person’s life and in his behaviour. The believer cannot be a liar. The 
adulterer cannot be a believer at the moment when he is committing adultery. 
True faith prevents that, and true prayer keeps a person from committing 
immoral actions. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): 
“Recite (O Muhammad) what has been revealed to you of the Book (the Qur’aan), 
and perform As‑Salaah (Iqaamt‑as‑Salaah). Verily, As‑Salaah (the prayer) 
prevents from Al‑Fahsha’ (i.e. great sins of every kind, unlawful sexual 
intercourse) and Al‑Munkar (i.e. disbelief, polytheism, and every kind of evil 
wicked deed) and the remembering (praising) of (you by) Allaah (in front of the 
angels) is greater indeed [than your remembering (praising) of Allaah in 
prayers]. And Allaah knows what you do”
[al-‘Ankaboot 29:45] 
I invite you to join us in a moment of honesty. Let us study together the 
hadeeth reported by Abu Umaamah (may Allaah be pleased with him), who said that 
a young man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and 
said: “O Messenger of Allaah, give me permission to commit zina.”
 The people turned to him to rebuke him, telling him to be quiet. But the 
Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Leave 
him alone.” Then he came closer to him and told him to sit down. He said: 
“Would you like that for your mother?” He said: “No, by Allaah, may Allaah make 
me your ransom.” He said: “No, and the people do not like it for their mothers 
either.” Then he said: “Would you like it for your daughter?” He said: “No, by 
Allaah, may Allaah make me your ransom.” He said: “No, and the people do not 
like it for their daughters either.” He said: Would you like it for your 
sister?” He said: “No, by Allaah, may Allaah make me your ransom.” He said: 
“No, and the people do not like it for their sisters either.” He said: “Would 
you like it for your paternal aunt?” He said: “No, by Allaah, may Allaah make 
me your ransom.” He said: “No, and the people do not like it for their
 paternal aunts either.” He said: “Would you like it for your maternal aunt?” 
He said: “No, by Allaah, may Allaah make me your ransom.” He said: “No, and the 
people do not like it for their maternal aunts either.”  
Then he placed his hand on him and said: “O Allaah, forgive his sins and 
cleanse his heart, and protect his chastity.” And after that the young man 
never thought of any such thing again. 
Musnad Ahmad, 21705; al-Albaani classed its isnaad as saheeh in al-Saheehah, 
370. 
I ask you during this moment of honesty before Allaah: would you want that for 
your daughters, or for your wife? Then you should not want it for someone 
else’s daughter or wife…

Sheikh Dr. Taysir Al-Tamimi issued a Fatwa (a religious edict) at the Mosque of 
Riverside, California, during his visit there and while participating in the 
activities commemorating Al-Naqbah by the Palestinian community at that 
location. Sheikh Al-Tamimi stated in his Fatwa that the Palestinian Right of 
Return is the base of the resolution of the conflict and it is a fundamental 
right to hold to the Right of Return for all Palestinians, and at the same time 
an obligation.
The Sheikh also made clear in his Fatwa that the Palestinian victims of the 
Naqbah should be compensated for their physical, moral, mental and material 
suffering and for all their losses. This right to receive compensation is in 
addition to their Right of Return, and in no way replaces or diminishes their 
Right of Return.
According to the Fatwa of Sheikh Dr. Al-Tamimi, it is possible that 
Palestinians settle in another place as an alternative conditional solution, 
but, according to the Quran, this conditional possibility can only be fulfilled 
in a place which must be near and around the Mosque of Al-Aqsa in Jerusalem, 
where the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) ascended to the heavens. This is the only 
possible home of the Palestinians according to our religion.
The Right of Return of Palestinians is a just and legitimate right, and it is 
affirmed by all religions and by all international laws and treaties.
All Palestinians have the right to hold and renew their memories, wherever they 
live, until they return to the land which rightfully belongs to them.
Sheikh Dr. Taisir Rajab Al-Tamimi is the Chief of Judges of the Palestinian 
Authority and Chairman of the High Council of Islamic Law for Palestine. Sheikh 
Al-Tamimi was unjustly punished by the illegal Israeli occupation for praying 
in Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Since the days when Roman Emperors threw Christians to the lions, the relations 
between the emperors and the heads of the church have undergone many changes.
Constantine the Great, who became Emperor in the year 306--exactly 1700 years 
ago--encouraged the practice of Christianity in the empire, which included 
Palestine. Centuries later, the church split into an Eastern (Orthodox) and a 
Western (Catholic) part. In the West, the Bishop of Rome, who acquired the 
title of Pope, demanded that the Emperor accept his superiority.
The struggle between the Emperors and the Popes played a central role in 
European history and divided the peoples. It knew ups and downs. Some Emperors 
dismissed or expelled a Pope, some Popes dismissed or excommunicated an 
Emperor. One of the Emperors, Henry IV, walked to Canossa, standing for three 
days barefoot in the snow in front of the Pope's castle, until the Pope deigned 
to annul his excommunication.
But there were times when Emperors and Popes lived in peace with each other. We 
are witnessing such a period today. Between the present Pope, Benedict XVI, and 
the present Emperor, George Bush II, there exists a wonderful harmony. Last 
week's speech by the Pope, which aroused a world-wide storm, went well with 
Bush's crusade against Islamofascism, in the context of the Clash of 
Civilizations.

IN HIS lecture at a German university, the 265th Pope described what he sees as 
a huge difference between Christianity and Islam: while Christianity is based 
on reason, Islam denies it. While Christians see the logic of God's actions, 
Muslims deny that there is any such logic in the actions of Allah.
As a Jewish atheist, I do not intend to enter the fray of this debate. It is 
much beyond my humble abilities to understand the logic of the Pope. But I 
cannot overlook one passage, which concerns me too, as an Israeli living near 
the fault-line of this war of civilizations.
In order to prove the lack of reason in Islam, the Pope asserts that the 
prophet Muhammad ordered his followers to spread their religion by the sword. 
According to the Pope, that is unreasonable, because faith is born of the soul, 
not of the body. How can the sword influence the soul?
To support his case, the Pope quoted--of all people--a Byzantine Emperor, who 
belonged, of course, to the competing Eastern Church. At the end of the 14th 
century, the Emperor Manuel II Palaeologus told of a debate he had--or so he 
said (its occurrence is in doubt)--with an unnamed Persian Muslim scholar. In 
the heat of the argument, the Emperor (according to himself) flung the 
following words at his adversary:

Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find 
things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the 
faith he preached. 
These words give rise to three questions: 
(a) Why did the Emperor say them? 
(b) Are they true? 
(c) Why did the present Pope quote them?

WHEN MANUEL II wrote his treatise, he was the head of a dying empire. He 
assumed power in 1391, when only a few provinces of the once illustrious empire 
remained. These, too, were already under Turkish threat. 
At that point in time, the Ottoman Turks had reached the banks of the Danube. 
They had conquered Bulgaria and the north of Greece, and had twice defeated 
relieving armies sent by Europe to save the Eastern Empire. In 1453, only a few 
years after Manuel's death, his capital, Constantinople (the present Istanbul) 
fell to the Turks, putting an end to the Empire that had lasted for more than a 
thousand years.
During his reign, Manuel made the rounds of the capitals of Europe in an 
attempt to drum up support. He promised to reunite the church. There is no 
doubt that he wrote his religious treatise in order to incite the Christian 
countries against the Turks and convince them to start a new crusade. The aim 
was practical, theology was serving politics.
In this sense, the quote serves exactly the requirements of the present 
Emperor, George Bush II. He, too, wants to unite the Christian world against 
the mainly Muslim Axis of Evil. Moreover, the Turks are again knocking on the 
doors of Europe, this time peacefully. It is

* 40:**28. And a believing man of Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) family, who hid his
faith said: Would you kill a man because he says: My Lord is Allâh, and he
has come to you with clear signs (proofs) from your Lord? And if he is a
liar, upon him will be (the sin of) his lie; but if he is telling the truth,
then some of that (calamity) wherewith he threatens you will befall on you.
Verily, Allâh guides not one who is a Musrif (a polytheist, or a murderer
who shed blood without a right, or those who commit great sins, oppressor,
transgressor), a liar! *

*29. O my people! Yours is the kingdom this day, you are uppermost in the
land. But who will save us from the Torment of Allâh, should it befall us?
Fir'aun (Pharaoh) said: I show you only that which I see (correct), and I
guide you only to the path of right policy! *

*30. And he who believed said: O my people! Verily, I fear for you a fate
like that day (of disaster) of the Confederates (of old)! *

*31. Like the fate of the people of Nûh (Noah), and 'Ad, and Thamûd and
those who came after them. And Allâh wills no injustice for (His) slaves. *

*32. And, O my people! Verily! I fear for you the Day when there will be
mutual calling (between the people of Hell and of Paradise). *

*33. A Day when you will turn your backs and flee having no protector from
Allâh, And whomsoever Allâh sends astray, for him there is no guide. *

*34. And indeed Yûsuf (Joseph) did come to you, in times gone by, with clear
signs, but you ceased not to doubt in that which he did bring to you, till
when he died you said: No Messenger will Allâh send after him. Thus
Allâhleaves astray him who is a
Musrif (a polytheist, oppressor, a criminal, sinner who commit great sins)
and a Murtâb (one who doubts Allâh's Warning and His Oneness). *

*35. Those who dispute about the Ayât (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons,
signs, revelations, etc.) of Allâh, without any authority that has come to
them, it is greatly hateful and disgusting to Allâh and to those who
believe. Thus does Allâh seal up the heart of every arrogant, tyrant. (So
they cannot guide themselves to the Right Path). *

*36. And Fir'aun (Pharaoh) said: O Hâmân! Build me a tower that I may
arrive at the ways, *

*37. The ways of the heavens, and I may look upon the Ilâh (God) of
Mûsa(Moses) but verily, I think him to be a liar. Thus it was made
fair-seeming, in Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) eyes, the evil of his deeds, and he was
hindered from the (Right) Path, and the plot of Fir'aun (Pharaoh) led to
nothing but loss and destruction (for him). *

*38. And the man who believed said: O my people! Follow me, I will guide
you to the way of right conduct [i.e. guide you to Allâh's religion of
Islâmic Monotheism with which Mûsa (Moses) has been sent]. *

*39. O my people! Truly, this life of the world is nothing but a (quick
passing) enjoyment, and verily, the Hereafter that is the home that will
remain forever. *

*40. Whosoever does an evil deed, will not be requited except the like
thereof, and whosoever does a righteous deed, whether male or female and is
a true believer (in the Oneness of Allâh), such will enter Paradise, where
they will be provided therein (with all things in abundance) without limit.
*

*41. And O my people! How is it that I call you to salvation while you call
me to the Fire! *

*42. You invite me to disbelieve in Allâh (and in His Oneness), and to join
partners in worship with Him; of which I have no knowledge, and I invite you
to the All-Mighty, the Oft-Forgiving! *

*43. No doubt you call me to (worship) one who cannot grant (me) my request
(or respond to my invocation) in this world or in the Hereafter. And our
return will be to Allâh, and Al-Musrifûn (i.e. polytheists and arrogants,
those who commit great sins, the transgressors of Allâh's set limits)! They
shall be the dwellers of the Fire! *

*44. And you will remember what I am telling you, and my affair I leave it
to Allâh. Verily, Allâh is the All-Seer of (His) slaves. *

*45. So Allâh saved him from the evils that they plotted (against him),
while an evil torment encompassed Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people. *

Asalaams wr wb   I hope all is well with you and the family.  I am mailing all 
my contacts to ask for sponsorship towards an Islamic charity (Ebrahim College) 
and whether you could forward this to any friends  family that would be 
interested in helping the cause, inshallah.  My aim is to trek the peak of 
Mount Sinai, Egypt (2,285 meters above sea level), where Prophet (as) Musa 
(Moses) spoke to Allah. It’s going to be a tough and grueling challenge, with 
the trek taking around 6 hours in the searing heat of the Egyptian summer, to 
reach the peak of the mountain. Yes I know, I’m nuts! But it is all for a good 
cause. I work as a Head of a Sixth-Form in a challenging inner London school, 
and I thought it was very important for me to support an Islamic Sixth-Form 
College that is desperately trying to raise funds to educate our future ummah 
and ‘leaders for tomorrow’. I have worked in Education for the past 6-7 years 
in tough London schools and I see Islamic schools and colleges as part of the 
solution to tackle decades of nationwide underachievement of Muslim students.
