 [ RAMADHAN FOCUS 1429 Part 1 ] - Some Virtues of Ramadhan

Hadhrat Salman RA narrates that during the last Jumu'ah of the month
of Sha'ban, Rasullullah ( sallallhu alaiyhi wasallam) recited a
Khutba(sermon) in which he said: 0 People! An auspicious month has
dawned over you. In that month is a night which is superior to a
thousand months (i.e. ibadat in this night is superior to the ibadat
rendered in a thousand months. Allah Ta'ala has made fasting
compulsory in this month, and has decreed wakefulness at night (i.e.
Taraweeh Salat) Sunnah. A Nafl (non-obligatory or optional) act
rendered in this month for attaining proximity to Allah, is equal to a
Fardh act rendered in other months. A fardh act rendered in this month
is equal to seventy Fardh acts of other months. Whoever gives to a
fasting person something for Iftar, his sins will be forgiven and he
will be saved from Jahannam; he obtains as much reward as the fasting
person (to whom he had given something for Iftaar) while the reward of
the person is not reduced in any way.The people asked: '0
Rasullullah! All of us are not by the means to give something for the
Iftar of another. (They were at the time under the impression that
Rasullullah SAW referred to a full meal). Rasullullah SAW said: This
reward is even for a person who gives another a date, a drink of water
or milk (for Iftaar)... (Ibn Khuzaimah)

Nabi ( sallallhu alaiyhi wasallam) said: “My ummah has been given 5
special things that were not given to anyone before them. The smell
from the mouth of a fasting person is sweeter to Allah than the
fragrance of musk. The fish in the sea seek forgiveness on their
behalf until they break fast. Allah decorates His special jannah
everyday and then says the time is near when My faithful servants
shall cast aside the trials of the world and come to you. In this
month the rebellious shayateen are chained, so as not to incite evil
which they normally do in other months. On the last night of Ramadhan,
the fasting Muslims are forgiven.” The companions inquired: “O
Messenger of Allah: Is that night laylatul qadr.” Nabi ( sallallhu
alaiyhi wasallam) replied: “No, but it is only right that a servant
should be given his reward on having completed his duty.” (Reported
by Ahmad and Baihaqi)

Nabi ( sallallhu alaiyhi wasallam) said: “Every good deed of the child
of Adam is increased (in reward) from 10 to 700 times.” and Almighty
Allah says: “Except fasting, for verily it is for Me and I, Myself
will reward it.” “The fasting person abstains from desire and food for
My sake.” (Mishkhat Shareef). Nabi ( sallallhu alaiyhi wasallam) said:
“For the fasting person there are two occasions of joy – pleasure at
the time of breaking the fast and at the time of meeting his Rabb
(Sustainer).” (Mishkat Shareef)

 Sajda Tilawat

THE AYAT OF SAJDATUT TILAWAT
There are 14 Aayaat of the Qur'an after the recital of which Sajdatut
Tilawat has to be made. These are indicated by the word 'As Sajdah'
shown in the margin and also on the specific Aayaat. (Note: The second
Sajdah in Surah Haj is to be performed by the Shafi'ees, and the
Sajdah in Surah Saad is not a Sajdatut Tilawat for the Shafi'ees. This
is a Sajdatush Shukr for the Shafi'ees and should be performed only
out of Salat. The niyyah(intention) for this is: 'Nawaytu Sajdatush
Shukri lillahi Ta'aala').

According to the Shafi'es and Hanafis there are 14 sajda tilawat in
the Noble Quran. The Hanbalis state that there are 15 sajdas whilst
the Malikis say that there are eleven sajda tilawat in the Noble
Quran.
When reciting or listening to the Qur'an and on reaching any of these
Aayaat it is Waajib to perform a single Sajdah, according to the
Hanafi's. According to Imaam Shafi'ee Rahmatullahi Alayh it is Sunnah.
The Hanafi scholars say that it is compulsory upon the reciter and
listener to perform the 14 sajdas. The vast majority of jurists,
namely, Malikis, Shafi'es, Hanbalis state that it is sunnah and not
compulsory. However if one is unable to perform the Sajdah at once
then it could be performed soon after. This Sajdah is not Waajib for
women when they are in a state of Haidh or Nifaas.

If an Aayat of Sajdah is read in Salaat then the Sajdah must be made
immediately in the Salaat. The method of performing Sajdatut Tilawat
in Salaat is to complete the Aayat and then immediately go down into
Sajdah whilst saying Allahu Akbar. After the Sajdah return to the
standing position whilst saying Allahu Akbar and continue recital
without first reading 'Bismillah'.

If an Aayat of Sajdah is repeated several times while seated in one
place then only one Sajdah is Waajib. When one Sajdah Aayat is read at
several different places or if separate Aayaat are recited at various
places then the corresponding number of Sajdahs will have to be
performed A small house, or the chamber of the Masjid is regarded as
one place. It is desirable to read the Aayat of Sajda inaudibly to
avoid making the Sajdah Waaj'ib on others who are within hearing
distance. It is makrooh to recite the Qur'an and deliberately omit
reading the Aayat of Sajdah to avoid performing the Sajdah.

HOW TO PERFORM THE SAJDATUT TILAWAT
The same conditions regarding Tahaarat, Wudhu etc. that apply to Salat
are applicable to Sajdatut Tilaawat. Sajdatut Tilawat is prohibited
whilst the sun is rising, precisely at noon, and from the time the
colour of the sun changes before sunset until the sun has fully set.

The Hanafi method: It is Mustahab (desirable) to stand up and say:
'Allahu Akbar' without raising the hands; then go straight down into
Sajdah; read 'Subhaana Rabbiyal A'ala' three times; arise out of
Sajdah and 'whilst standing up say; 'Allahu Akbar'. There is no
Tasleem (Salaam) after standing up. Although it is better to begin and
end this Sajdah from a standing position, it is also correct to
commence and terminate it from the Jalsa (sitting) position.

The Shafi'ee method:
First say the niyat for Sajdatut Tilawat thus: 'Nawaytu Sajdatut
Tilaawati lillahi Ta'ala' . Then recite the Takbeeratul Ihraam(whilst
lifting hands as in salaat) by saying 'Allahu Akbar' and perform one
sajdah. Thereafter whilst standing up say the Takbeer (Allahu Akbar)
and then recite the Tasleem(salaam) to complete the sajdah.

[QURAN - Part 3] Easy Method to complete the recitation of the Qur'an
in a Month
Ramadhan is the month of the Qura'an.

Do you want to finish reading the Glorious Qur'an this Ramadhan
Insha-Allah ? All one has to do is to read around 4.5 pages after each
salaah.

4.5 X 5 salaahs a day X 30 days = 604 pages(approximately the number
of pages in the Qur'an )

I never knew it was that easy to read the whole Quran each month, by
spending few minutes after each salaah, AND WHAT AN INVESTMENT !!! and
if one, wants to complete the recitation of the Glorious Qur'an once
every two months, recite just 2 pages after each salaah. Each letter
one reads counts 10 hasanat;

what about a word ??

what about a line ??

what about a page ??

what about a juz???

what about the whole Qur'an ??..??

May we gather courage and strength to increase our recitation of the
Qur'an in the month of Ramadhan.

Bismillah [IslamCity] Success of a Farmer

2008-08-09 Thread Al Islaah Publications

 Success of a farmer

There was a farmer who grew superior quality, award-winning corn in
his farm. Each year, he entered his corn in the state fair where it
won honors and prizes.

One year a newspaper reporter interviewed him and learned something
interesting about how he grew his corn. The reporter discovered that
the farmer shared his seed corn with his neighbours.

How can you afford to share your best seed corn with your neighbours
when they are entering corn in the competition with yours each year?
The reporter asked. Why brother ?

The farmer replied, Didn't you know? The wind picks up pollen grains
from the ripening corn and swirls it from field to field. If my
neighbours grow inferior, sub-standard and poor quality corn,
cross-pollination will steadily degrade the quality of my corn. If I
have to grow good corn, I must help my neighbours to grow good corns
too.

The farmer gave a superb insight into the connectedness of life. His
corn cannot improve unless his neighbours' corn also improves. So it
is in the other dimensions and areas of life !

Those who choose to be in harmony must help their neighbours and
colleagues to be at peace. Those who choose to live well must help
others live well too. The value of a life is measured by the lives it
touches...

Success does not happen in isolation; it is most often a participatory
and collective process. So share the good practices, ideas and new
knowledge with your family, friends, team members and neighbours and
all. As they say: Success breeds Success.

**

Abdullah ibn Umar(radhiyallahu anhu) narrated that the Prophet (peace
be upon him) said: “The best friend in the Sight of Allah is he who
is the well-wisher of his companions, and the best neighbour is one
who behaves best towards his neighbours.’ (Tirmidhi)

2008 to see three Hijri years

Staff Report: GULF NEWS
Published: December 16, 2007, 23:12
http://archive.gulfnews.com/articles/07/12/17/10175432.html

Dubai: The Gregorian year 2008 will see three Hijri years, Arabic
daily Al Khaleej said quoting Jordanian Astronomical Society on
Sunday.

The last nine days of Dhu Al Hijja 1428 will fall in the first days of
January 2008, and then to be followed by the Hijri year of 1429, the
society said in a statement.

The last days of December 2008 will see the start of the Hijri year
1430.

This means that year 2008 will see the end of 1428, the complete year
of 1429 and the beginning of 1430, the society explained in its
statement.

Having three Hijri years in a Gregorian year happens once every 33
years, which means 2041 will have three lunar years.

What is the Islamic Calendar ?
Syed Khalid Shaukat
The Islamic calendar is based on lunar months, which begin when a thin
new crescent Moon is actually sighted in the western sky after sunset
within a day or so after the New Moon. Hence, the month is either 29
days or 30 days. There are 12 months in an Islamic year, which is
either 354 days long or 355 days long, compared to (Gregorian) civil
calendar year of 365 or 366 days. Since the Islamic Lunar year has 12
lunar months, it is on an average, 11 days shorter than the
(Gregorian) civil year, the Islamic year shifts earlier in each civil
year by about 11 days. The 12 months of the Islamic calendar are:

Muharram
Safar

The Islamic (Hijri) calendar year is usually abbreviated A.H. in
Western languages from the latinized Anno Hegirae or more commonly
known as After Hijrah.

It was during the Messenger Muhammad's (peace be upon him) last
pilgrimage in the 10th year of Hijrah (10th year of his migration from
Makkah to Medinah), that the decision to introduce a purely lunar
Islamic Calendar was made.

Although, the Islamic calendar was introduced in the Christian Era of
632 AD by the Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him), the beginning of
the Islamic era for the count of Islamic years was considered and
discussed during 639 AD, the time of the 4th year of the Caliphate of
Umar(R.A.) who declared that the most important event in establishing
the roots of Islam in Madinah is Hijrah (Messenger's migration from
Makkah), therefore let it become the epoch of the era which happened
in 622 AD. The actual starting date for the Islamic Calendar was
chosen (on the basis of purely lunar years, counting backwards) to be
the first day of the first month (1st Muharram) of the year of the
Hijrah. However, the era between 1st year to 10th year of the Hijrah
was not following this Islamic Calendar; instead the prevailing
practices of various kinds of intercalation was followed in Arabia at
that time. Different tribes were following different intercalations,
so there was no uniform calendar. Accordingly, first day of Muharram,
1 A.H. as practiced in Arabia corresponded either April 18 or May 18,
622 C.E. (Julian calendar). However, if one wants a theoretical
starting date for Islamic calendar (on the basis of purely lunar
months without intercalation, counting backwards) then the first day
of the first month i.e. 1st Muharram, 1 A.H. corresponds to July 16,
622 C.E.

The earliest date of Islamic calendar for which a Julian calendar date
is exactly known is 9th Dhu al-Hijjah, 10 AH, which corresponds to
March 6, 632 C.E. (Friday), when the Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon
him) performed his last and farewell pilgrimage to Makkah.

What kind of town are you from ?

Once there was an old and very wise man. Every day he would sit
outside a gas station in his rocking chair and wait to greet motorists
as they passed through his small town. On this day, his granddaughter
knelt down at the foot of his chair and slowly passed the time with
him.

As they sat and watched the people come and go, a tall man who surely
had to be a tourist -- since they knew everyone in the town -- began
looking around as if he were checking out the area for a place to
live.

The stranger walked up and asked,So what kind of town is this that
we're in?
The older gentleman slowly turned to the man and replied, Well, what
kind of town are you from?
The tourist said,In the town I'm from everyone is very critical of
each other. The neighbours all gossip about everyone, and it's a real
negative place to live. I'm sure glad to be leaving. It is not a very
cheerful place.
The man in the chair looked at the stranger and said, You know,
that's just how this town is.

An hour or so later a family that was also passing through stopped for
gas. The car slowly turned in and rolled to a stop in front of where
the older gentleman and his granddaughter were sitting. The mother
jumped out with two small children and asked where the restrooms were.
The man in the chair pointed to a small, bent-up sign that was barely
hanging by one nail on the side of the door.

The father stepped out of the car and also asked the man,Is this town
a pretty good place to live?
The man in the chair replied, What about the town you are from? How
is it?
The father looked at him and said,Well, in the town I'm from everyone
is very close and always willing to lend their neighbour a helping
hand. There's always a hello and thank you everywhere you go. I really
hate to leave. I feel almost like we are leaving family.

The older gentlemen turned to the father and gave him a warm smile.
You know, that's a lot like this small town.

Then the family returned to the car, said their thank yous, waved
goodbye and drove away.
After the family was in the distance, the granddaughter looked up at
her grandfather and asked,Grandpa, how come when the first man came
into our town you told him it was a terrible place to live and when
the family came in to town you told them it was a wonderful place to
live?

The grandfather lovingly looked down at this granddaughter's wondering
blue eyes and said,No matter where you move, you take your own
attitude with you and that's what makes it terrible or wonderful.

It's your attitude, not your aptitude that determines your altitude.
Happiness is not something you find, it's something you create.

Bismillah [IslamCity] How to view Hardships and Disasters ?

 How to view Hardships ?

Allah has decreed that, in this life, hardships and disasters strike
both believers and non-believers. For a non-believer, they are
inconveniences that hinder him from proceeding with his normal
involvement in the worldly life. For a believer, on the other hand,
they are instances of rest and remembrance, tests that promise great
rewards, and indications of atonement and expiation of sins.
Regardless of how little is the harm that strikes a believer, it
carries with it good news of forgiveness and elevated rank ( in Jannah
). The Righteous Predecessors used to be pleased when a hardship
afflicted them, seeing it as a token of Allah's forgiveness and
benevolence.

Allah burdens not a person beyond his scope. He gets reward for that
(good) which he has earned, and he is punished for that (evil) which
he has earned. Our Lord! Punish us not if we forget or fall into
error, our Lord! Lay not on us a burden like that which You did lay on
those before us (Jews and Christians); our Lord! Put not on us a
burden greater than we have strength to bear. Pardon us and grant us
Forgiveness. Have mercy on us. You are our Maula (Patron, Suppor-ter
and Protector, etc.) (Surah Baqara Verse 286)

Expiations of Sins
Abu Hurayrah(ra) reported that the Prophet(sallallahu alaiyhi
wasallam) said: Hardships continue to befall a believing man and
woman in their body, family, and property, until they meet Allah
burdened with no sins. [Tirmidhi]

Sign of Allah's Love
Abu Hurayrah (RA) reported that the Prophet (sallallahu alaiyhi
wasallam) said: Whenever Allah wills good for a person, He subjects
him to adversity [Bukharee and others]

Sign of Eeman
Abu Hurayrah (RA) and Ka'b Bin Maalik (RA) reported that the
Prophet(sallallahu alaiyhi wasallam) said: The parable of a believer
is that of a fresh and moist plant; the wind tilts it this way and
that way; and so is the believer; he continues to be subject to
affliction. And the parable of a hypocrite is that of a firm cedar
tree; it does not shake - until it is uprooted all at once. [Bukharee
and Muslim]

Sign of Righteousness
The prophets and righteous people are afflicted the most, and their
rewards are the highest. Sa'd (RA) reported that the Prophet
(sallallahu alaiyhi wasallam) said: The most in their suffering
among the people are the prophets, then the best, then the (next)
best. One is afflicted in accordance with his deen (faith). If his
deen is firm his affliction is hard, and if his deen is weak, his
affliction is light. Indeed, one would be so much subjected to
adversity until he walks among the people without any sins. [Ahmad,
Tirmithee]

Early Punishment
Anas (RA) reported that the Prophet (sallallahu alaiyhi wasallam)
said: When Allah wills good for a servant of His, He expedites his
punishment in this life; and when He wills retribution for a servant
of His, He holds his sins for Him to judge him by them on the Day of
Resurrection. [Tirmithee]

Multiplication of Rewards
Anas (RA) reported that the Prophet (sallallahu alaiyhi wasallam)
said: The amount of reward is in accordance with the amount of
suffering. When Allah (SWT) loves some people, He tries them (with
affliction). He who then is content (with Allah's decree) has achieved
the acceptance (of Allah), and he who is dissatisfied (with Allah's
decree) will attain the anger (of Allah). [Tirmidhi]

Rewards for Sickness
One should not look to sickness as a gloomy episode, but should
remember the great good in it. It is one form of affliction with which
Allah (SWT) tests His 'ibaad (servants), giving them a chance to
acquire rewards, as was explained above, as is further emphasized
below.

Removal of Sins and Elevation in Ranks
Abu Hurayrah (RA) reported that the Prophet(sallallahu alaiyhi
wasallam) said: Whenever a Muslim is afflicted by harm from sickness
or other matters, Allah will drop his sins because of that, like a
tree drops its leaves. [Bukharee and Muslim]

Abu Sa'eed al-Khudree (RA) reported that the Prophet (sallallahu
alaiyhi wasallam) said: A Muslim is not afflicted by hardship,
sickness, sadness, worry, harm, or depression - even if pricked by a
thorn, but Allah expiates his sins because of that. [Bukharee and
Muslim]

Sa'eed said, I was with Salmaan (RA) when he visited a sick man in
Kindah ( in Persia ), and he said to him: Expect good because Allah
(SWT) makes a believers sickness an expiation (for his sins) and a
period of rest. However, when a disbeliever falls sick, he is like a
camel whose owner ties it then lets it loose - it does not understand
why it was tied nor why it was freed. [Bukharee]

'Aishah (RA) narrated that once some pain afflicted the
Prophet(sallallahu alaiyhi wasallam) causing him to suffer and turn
about in his bed. she said: Had one of us

 Various Rulings on Mobile Ring-tones

Mobile Ringtones
http://shaykh.wordpress.com/2007/01/26/mobile-phone-ring-tones/
by Muhammad Abdullah
Friday, January 26, 2007
Shaykh Mohammad Saleem mentioned the following, regarding the types of
ring tones a Muslim should have on his mobile:

One should endeavour to switch off our mobiles when coming into the
Masjid. If we leave them on silent then at least wait till you go
outside before looking at them. It is haraam to have musical ring
tones. (Even though those who do this have good intentions) it is also
inappropriate to have Adhaan or Qiraah as ring tones. The Qur'aan and
Adhaan were not sent to this world in order to inform us that a friend
of ours is ringing us on our mobile.

The plan to fine those whose mobile phones ring during the namaz or
prayers has been welcomed by public and is expected to spread into
other parts of the province.
MUS - The mufti or senior Muslim cleric for the southeastern Turkish
city of Mus has ordered that anyone whose mobile phone rings while
they are praying in one of the region's mosques should pay a fine of
10 Turkish lira. Mufti Ali Melek said that the money raised from the
fines would be go towards the needs of Mus' mosques. Currently, the
fine is limited to the city of Mus but soon would spread throughout
the province, according to Melek.

According to Cellular News, an imam at a Mosque in Saudi Arabia issued
a fatwa against mobile phones after one rang during prayers on
Saturday, playing Arabic pop music. The fatwa states that the next
time somebody allows their phone to go off in the congregation, the
imam could throw the guilty person out of the mosque.

Using musical tunes on mobile phones
Taken from islam-qa - Sheikh Munajjid

Question:
Is there anything wrong with using mobile phones which play tunes,
because these tunes are a kind of music, or not? In fact it is
possible to avoid this problem by using a mobile telephone whose
ringing tone is a verse of Qur'aan.

ANSWER:

Praise be to Allaah. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be
upon him) stated that musical instruments are haraam when he said:
There will be among my ummah people who will regard as permissible
adultery, silk, alcohol and musical instruments. Narrated by
al-Bukhaari, 5590.

This hadeeth indicates that musical instruments are haraam in two
ways. Firstly, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)
said they will regard as permissible, which clearly indicates that
the things mentioned - including musical instruments - are forbidden
in sharee'ah but those people will regard them as permissible.
Secondly, musical instruments are mentioned alongside things which are
definitively forbidden, namely adultery and alcohol. If they were not
haraam, they would not be mentioned alongside these things.
(al-Silsilah al-Saheehah by al-Albaani, 1/140-141).

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: This
hadeeth indicates that musical instruments are haraam. (Majmoo'
al-Fataawa, 11/535).

It is possible to do without these haraam tunes by setting the phone
to ring with an ordinary tone, or something else that is not regarded
as a musical tune.

The Standing Committee for Issuing Fatwas was asked about the ruling
on musical tunes on mobile phones. They replied:

It is not permissible to use musical tunes for telephones or any other
devices, because listening to musical instruments is haraam, as is
indicated by the evidence of sharee'ah. It is possible to do without
them by using the ordinary ringing tone. And Allaah is the Source of
strength. Majallat al-Da'wah, issue no. 1790, p. 42.

The questioner mentioned that it is possible to set the ringing tone
as a verse of Qur'aan, but it is better not to do that, because there
is the fear that this may be a kind of disrespect towards the Holy
Qur'aan. Allaah revealed the Qur'aan to be a Book of guidance showing
the right way, to be recited and pondered and acted upon, not to be a
means of alerting people. It is sufficient for the questioner to set
his phone to an ordinary ringing tone. And Allaah knows best.

Mobile phones making haraam sounds
Taken from islam-qa - Sheikh Muhammed Salih Al-Munajjid

Question:
What is your opinion of what we hear of the annoying ringing of mobile
phones with a musical ring and their being so popular that they are
even heard in the mosques?.

Answer:
Praise be to Allaah.

Setting mobile phones to ring with a musical tone is reprehensible and
haraam

 A Bad smell

Hasan al-Basri(Rahmatullahi alaiyh) once fell sick. His neighbour, an
unbeliever, came to pay him a visit.

O Imam, he exclaimed, I detect a bad smell. The Imam told him it
was caused by illness, but the neighbour insisted: That is not the
odour of sickness. It is a lavatory smell. Tell me what it is!

He had not noticed that sewage was leaking from his house into that of
the Imam.

When the neighbour insisted, the Imam finally said: For some months
your drain has been seeping through to our side. I tried to fix it,
but without success.

His neighbour asked why he had not told him before, but the venerable
Imam said: I might have offended you.

The unbeliever was so impressed by this ethical refinement that he was
ennobled with True Imaan, for he recognized the Imam's morality as a
reflection of Islam.

***

Allah, the Exalted, says: Worship Allah and join none with Him (in
worship); and do good to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, Al-Masakin (the
poor), the neighbour who is near of kin, the neighbour who is a
stranger, the companion by your side, the wayfarer (you meet), and
those (slaves) whom your right hands possess.'' (Quran 4:36)

recommending treating neighbours with kindness until I thought he
would assign a share of inheritance. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Whenever you prepare a broth, put plenty of water in it, and give some
of it to your neighbours. [Muslim]

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet
(sallahu alaiyhi wassallam) said, By Allah, he is not a believer! By
Allah, he is not a believer! By Allah, he is not a believer. It was
asked, Who is that, O Messenger of Allah? He said, One whose
neighbour does not feel safe from his evil. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The
Messenger(sallahu alaiyhi wassallam) said, O Muslim women! No one of
you should consider insignificant (a gift) to give to her neighbour
even if it is (a gift of) the trotters of a sheep. [Al-Bukhari and

 The Wolves within ...

An old Grandfather, whose grandson came to him with anger at a
schoolmate who had done him an injustice, said, Let me tell you a
story. I too, at times, have felt a great 'hate' for those that have
taken so much, with no sorrow for what they do. But hate wears you
down, and does not hurt your enemy. It is like taking poison and
wishing your enemy would die. I have struggled with these feelings
many times.

He continued, It is as if there are two wolves inside me; one is good
and does no harm. He lives in harmony with all around him and does not
take offense when no offense was intended. He will only fight when it
is right to do so, and in the right way.

But the other wolf, ah! He is full of anger. The littlest thing will
set him into a fit of temper. He fights everyone, all the time, for no
reason. He cannot think because his anger and hate are so great. It is
hard to live with these two wolves inside me, for both of them try to
dominate my soul.

The boy looked intently into his Grandfather's eye and asked, Which
one wins, Grandfather?

The Grandfather solemnly said, The one I feed.

The Meaning of Nafs
by Muhammad 'Afifi al-'Akiti

Ibn Kathir says:

The Mu'min are a people who have been prevented through the
Qur'an from indulging in the pleasures of this world; it comes between
them and what might destroy them. The Mu'min is like a prisoner in
this world, who tries to free himself from its shackles and chains,
placing his trust in nothing in it, until the day he meets his
Creator. He knows full well that he is accountable for everything that
he hears, sees and says, and for everything that he does with his
body. (Al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah, vol. 9 pg. 276, Cairo 1352)

There are two kinds of people, one are those whose Nafs have overcome
them and led them to ruin because they yielded to them and obeyed
their impulses. The other kinds are those who have overcome their Nafs
and made them obey their commands.

Nafs (pl. Anfus or Nufus) lexically means soul, the psyche, the ego,
self, life, person, heart or mind. (Mu'jam, Kassis)

Although some scholars have classified the Nafs up to 7 stages, there
is agreement among Ulama' that in the Qur'an, Allah (s.w.t.) has
described at least 3 main types of the Nafs. And these are in rank
from the worse to better: Nafs al-Ammara Bissu' (the Nafs that urges
evil), Nafs al-Lawwama (the Nafs that Blames) and Nafs al-Mutma`inna
(the Nafs at Peace).

A summary of these states of the Nafs are given by Imam Tabari in his
Tafsir of Surah Yusuf verse 53:
1. Nafs al-Ammara Bissu' (The Soul which Commands):
This is the Nafs that brings punishment itself. By its very nature it
directs its owner towards every wrong action. No one can get rid of
its evil without the help from Allah. As Allah refers to this Nafs in
the story of the wife of al-Aziz (Zulaikha) and Prophet Yusuf (s):

The (human) soul is certainly prone to evil (12:53).

Allah also says:

And had it not been for the grace of Allah and His Mercy on you, not
one of you would ever have been pure; but Allah purifies whomever He
wishes, and Allah is Hearing, Knowing. (24:21)

This Nafs resides in the world of the senses and is dominated by
earthly desires (Shahwat) and passions..

Evil lies hidden in the Nafs and it is this that leads it on to do
wrong. If Allah were to leave the servant alone with his self, the
servant would be destroyed between its evil and the evil that it
craves; but if Allah grants him success and help, then he will
survive. We seek refuge in Allah the Almighty, both from the evil in
ourselves and from the evil of our actions.
2. Nafs al-Lawwama (the Soul that Blames):

Allah refers to this Nafs,

And I do call to witness the Nafs that blames (75:2).

This Nafs is conscious of its own imperfections.

Hasan al-Basri said, You always see the believer blaming himself and
saying things like 'Did I want this? Why did I do that? Was this
better than that?..
3. Nafs al-Mutma`inna (the Soul at Peace):

Allah refers to this Nafs,

O Self, in complete rest and satisfaction! (89:27).

This Nafs is tranquil as it rests on the certitude of Allah.

Ibn Abbas (r) said, It is the tranquil and believing soul.

Al-Qatadah (r) said, It is the soul of the believer, made calm by
what Allah has promised. Its owner is at rest and content with his
knowledge of Allah's Names and Attributes, and with what He has said
about Himself and His Messenger(sallallahu alaiyhi wasallam ) , and
with what He has said about what awaits the soul after death: about
the departure of the soul, the life in the Barzakh, and the events of
the Day of Qiyamah which will follow. So much so that a believer such
as this can almost see them with his own eyes. So he submits to the
will of Allah

 Ramadhaan Focus( PART 8 )
I'TIKAAF - PART 3 of 3
1. TODAY'S HADITH
Hazrat Ibn Abbas(Radhiyallahu anhu) reports that, while he was once in
I'tikaaf in the Masjid-e-Nabawi (Prophet's mosque), a certain man
came to him, greeted him and sat down. Ibn Abbas(Radhiyallahu anhu)
said to him, 'I see that you seem sad and troubled. The man replied:
Yes. O son of the uncle of Rasullullah (Sallallahu alaiyhi wasallam),
I am indeed troubled in that I have an obligation to fulfil towards
someone. I swear by the holiness of the inmate of this honoured
resting place (Rasulullah's (Sallallahu alaihe wasallam) grave) that I
am not able to fulfil this obligation. Ibn Abbas(radhiyallahu anhu)
inquired: Shall I intercede with that person on your behalf? The man
replied By all means, if you so wish. Ibn Abbas(radhiyallahu anhu)
put on his shoes and proceeded out from the mosque. The man, seeing
this, said: Have you then forgotten that you are in I'tikaaf? Tears
filling his eyes, Ibn Abbas(radhiyallahu anhu) replied: 'No, but the
occasion is still fresh in my mind when I heard the esteemed inmate of
this tomb say:

Whoever sets forth in the way of settling a necessary affair on
behalf of his brother, that service shall be better for him than to
perform I'tikaaf for ten years; and whosoever performs I'tikaaf
for a day (thereby seeking the pleasure of Allah, Allah will spread
three trenches between him and the fire of Hell, the width of each
trench being greater than the distance between Heaven and the Earth.

COMMENTARY

Two things are clear from this Hadith. In the first place, we are told
that, by way of reward for one day's I'tikaaf', Allah spreads three
trenches between him and the fire of Jahannam, the width of which
equals the distance between the Heavens and the Earth. In Kashful
Ghummah, Allaama Sha'raani relates a Hadith wherein Rasulullah
(Sallallahu alaiyhi wasallam) said: Whoever performs I'tikaaf for
the final ten days of Ramadhan; for him is the reward of two Hajj and
two Umrahs; and whoever performs I'tikaaf from 'Maghrib' until
Eshaa, doing nothing except performing Salaat and reciting the
Qur'an, Allah will prepare a place for him in Jannah.

In the second place, we are told that performing a service for one's
brother brings a reward greater than ten years of I'tikaaf. For this
reason, Ibn Abbas(Radhiyallahu anhu) broke off his I'tikaaf; it was
of course possible for him to continue it afterwards. The Sufis say
that Allah has such sympathy for very few things as He has for a
broken heart. It is for this reason that we have been so much warned
of the Appeals to Allah of that person whose heart has been hurt
through any unjust treatment or persecution. Whenever the Prophet
(Sallallahu alaiyhi wasallam) appointed anyone as a governor, in
addition to advising him, he would also warn him to beware of the
invocation (to Allah) of the persecuted. Note that I'tikaaf
terminates when one leaves the mosque even for a task on behalf of a
fellow Muslim. When that I'tikaaf is Waajib, it will mean that it
has to be performed all over again. Rasullullah (Sallallaahu alayhi
Wasallam) never left the mosque during I'tikaaf, except for the
calls of nature and Wudhu. As for Ibn Abbas (Radhi Allaho anho)
leaving the mosque to do some favour to a friend, it was in the spirit
that is reminiscent of the soldier lying near death on the battle
field of Yarmouk, refusing to drink water until his wounded comrade
had been given the drink. On the other hand,it is quite possible that
Ibn Abbas (Radhi Allaho anho) was performing Nafl I'tikaaf, in
which case it was permissible for him to break it off. (Virtues of
Ramadhaan)
2. TODAYS FOCUS ( from Hanafi fiqh perspective )
WHAT TO DO DURING I'TIKAF

*
The Mu'takif should engage himself in Ibadat to the best of his
ability. Nafl Salaat, Tilawat, Durood, Istighfar and permanent Thikr
in general should be the Mu'takif's occupations throughout the
duration of his I'tikaaf.
*
When the Mu'takif speaks, he must speak only what is virtue or
what is necessary.
*
The Mutakif should not do anything which conflicts with the
spirit of I'tikaf. He should guard his heart, mind, ears, eyes and
limbs against all evil, thus deriving maximum benefit from his
seclusion in the Masjid.
*
The Mu'takif is the guest of Allah. He should therefore, be
careful of his behaviour in the House of Allah.

MASAAIL (RULES) PERTAINING TO I'TIKAF

*
The same rules which apply to a man observing I'tikaaf in the
Musjid, apply to a woman observing I'tikaaf in her place of seclusion
at home.
*
When necessity, e.g. Juma' Salaat in another Musjid, compels the
Mu'takif to leave his Masjid, it will be permissible for him to
enquire about a sick person or generally engage

Ramadhaan - Q A [ PART 8 ]
CONTRACEPTIVES AND FASTING
If a woman is on a contraceptive, can she continue to use it so not to
miss fasts in Ramadhaan? the contraceptive is used for medical
purposes and not to prevent a child-not married .
If an unmarried female is on a contraceptive for medical reasons, she
may continue its use as that will be of dual benefit to her, medical
as well as to be able to fast. If she does not have to take it for
medical reasons then it is advisable for her not to do so as that is
disturbing the natural cycle which may have health implications. and
Allah Ta'ala Knows Best. [Mufti Ebrahim Desai]

KISS WHILST FASTING
During fasting, can I give my wife a tight squeeze and a smacking
kiss?
If you are able to contain your carnal desires, then it is permissible
to do so. If you are unable to do so, for example, you are young or
newly married and there is a strong possibility that the hugging and
kissing will lead to being more intimate, then it is prohibited. and
Allah Ta'ala Knows Best. [Mufti Ebrahim Desai]

NOSE DROPS, EYE DROPS
Can a person who is sick inhale some menthol type medicine through the
nose to clear the head during fasting in Ramadan? Can a person put eye
drops in their eye during Fasting in Ramadan?
It is not permissible to inhale medicine during fasting. It is
permissible to use eye drops during fasting. [Mufti Ebrahim Desai]

SWIMMING
Can one swim while fasting ?
It is permissible. Care should be taken that no water enters the
mouth. It will, however, be best to abstain and use the precious
moments of this month in Ibaadat. and Allah Ta'ala Knows Best.
[Moulana Imraan Vawda]

BREASTFEEDING
I am breastfeeding my 5-month old daughter - can I fast during
Ramadan? The iftar time will be 8:30pm. If fasting affects lactation
should I continue or make up the days later?
It is permissible to fast whilst breastfeeding. However, if fasting
affects lactation, you may make up for the fasts later. and Allah
Ta'ala Knows Best. [Mufti Ebrahim Desai]

SWALLOWING MUCUS
If someone has a throat infection and is coughing up green or yellow
colored sputum, if such sputum is swallowed will this invalidate the
fast? Similarily if someone has a runny nose from the flu or common
cold which is producing clear mucus, if this mucus is swallowed will
the fast be invalidated?
Swallowing Mucus or sputum does not invalidate the fast. and Allah
Ta'ala Knows Best. [Mufti Ebrahim Desai]

SEHRI TIME
Being a Shafie, was my fast valid if I accidently followed the hanafi
sehri ending time (which is earlier)? I am from Malaysia and studying
in UK. I was not aware of the difference between fajar and asar time
between the shafie and hanafi mazhab. A large portion of last
ramadhan, I ate to the last minute before sehri ends using the hanafi
time. Do I have to perform qada?
There is no difference of opinion in the terminating time of Sehri and
commencing time for Fajr Salaat. All the scholars are unanimous that
Sehri ends upon the commencing of Subh-e-Saadiq (break of dawn) when
the horizontal light in the sky appears. Fajr time commences at
Subh-e-Saadiq. Your fasts were valid and you do not have to make
Qadhaa of your fasts. and Allah Ta'ala Knows Best. [Mufti Ebrahim
Desai]

TOOTHPASTE BRUSHING TEETH
1. I was wondering if brushing with miswaak allowed (which has a taste
to it), why isn't brushing with tooth paste allowed?
It is permissible to make miswak while fasting. To use tooth paste in
the state of fasting is Makrooh (disliked). The minimum taste in the
miswak is unlike the strong taste in the paste. Furthermore the paste
is a solid substance and liquidifies more in the mouth thereby having
the potential of going down the throat. [Mufti E. Desai]

2. Is it permissible to brush teeth while fasting?
It is makrooh to use toothpaste during fasting. One may use the
miswaak during fasting. [Mufti E Desai]

BLOOD TEST
If blood is taken out of the body, does this break the fast?
Taking out blood during fasting does not invalidate the fast. And
Allah Ta'ala knows best. [Mufti E. Desai]

2. I am diabetic and I am prone to fainting - can I take blood tests
to monitor my blood sugar during ramadan?
Shari'ah (laws of Islam) are balanced and have taken into
consideration different circumstances.

If a person is ill to such an extent that he will faint due to
fasting, then he will be excused from fasting. Such a person may give
Fidya (compensation) for not fasting. However, taking blood tests
during fasting is permissible and that does not invalidate the fast.
and Allah Ta'ala Knows Best. [Mufti Ebrahim Desai]

GUMS BLEED
When I am fasting, sometimes my gums bleed. If I swallowed this blood
would my fast be broken? Sometimes I cannot spit the blood out at work
as I cannot leave my post to go

 Taraweeh Summary - NIGHT 9

This summary of the ninth Tarawîh covers the Tenth Juz.

Beginning of tenth Juz

The tenth Juz commences with mention of booty. Allâh declares, Know
that from whatever spoils of war that you acquire, a fifth of it shall
be for Allâh, His messenger, the relatives, the poor, the orphans and
the travellers (verse 41). The remaining four-fifths will be
distributed among the Mujâhidîn [the Muslim soldiers who fought in the
battle].

Allâh then discusses certain details about the Battle of Badr. Allâh
addresses the Mu'minîn saying, Obey Allâh and His Nabî and do not
fall into dispute with each other, for then you will become cowardly
and your strength will be lost. Be patient, for verily Allâh is with
the patient ones. (verse 46)

Allâh commands the Muslims further: Prepare against them (your
enemies) whatever forces of strength you can muster... (verse 60). In
addition to amassing weapons and battle provisions, Muslims must
always have conviction in Allâh's assistance. Allâh then assures the
Muslims: Whatever you may spend in Allâh's way will be given to you
in full and you will not be oppressed. (verse 60)

Addressing Rasulullâh Sallallâhu 'alayhi wasallam it, Allâh says, Oh
Nabî Sallallâhu 'alayhi wasallam, exhort the Mu'minîn to fight.
(verse 65). Allâh informs the Muslims that if they are righteous,
resolute and trust firmly in Allâh, they will be able to vanquish an
army larger than themselves.

Prisoners of war should not be captured merely with the intention of
earning ransom money. Towards the end of the Sûrah, Muslims are urged
to keep religious objectives in mind when migrating or when waging
Jihâd. Earning the booty must never be the objective. Allâh outlines a
principle of inheritance at the end of Sûrah Anfâl when He says,
-Those who are relatives are closer to each other in Allâh's Book.
(verse 75)

The next Sûrah is called Sûrah Taubah because it contains mention of
the Taubah that Allâh accepted from those who failed to participate in
the Battle of Tabûk. It is also called Sûrah Barâ'ah because Allâh
absolves Himself and Rasulullâh Sallallâhu 'alayhi wasallam from what
the Kuffâr do (the Arabic word Barâ'ah means to absolve of blame).

This Sûrah mentions the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah which the Mushrikîn of
Makkah eventually broke. Allâh declares, Allâh and His Nabî have
absolved themselves of those Mushrikîn with whom you have made a
treaty. Consequently, The proclamation from Allâh and His Nabî (was
made) on the day of the greater Hajj that verily Allâh and His Nabî
are absolved of the Mushrikîn. (verses 1 and 3)

After this declaration, all Mushrikîn were banned from entering the
Harâm and from performing Tawâf naked. The Muslims are urged not to
take even their closest relatives as friends if they are Kuffâr. Allâh
also advises Rasulullâh Sallallâhu 'alayhi wasallam not to accept the
lame excuses of the Munâfiqîn (hypocrites) when they are reluctant to
fight in Jihâd. Their excuses are all false and the oaths that they
take along with the excuses are all false. Allâh assures Rasulullâh
Sallallâhu 'alayhi wasallam that the oaths of the sinners and
Munâfiqîn are hollow and should be ignored because these people were
never Muslims. Allâh warns Rasulullâh Sallallâhu 'alayhi wasallam that
the Munâfiqîn will desert him as soon as they get the opportunity.
Allâh's curse is on the Munâfiqîn men and women because they are
alike. Allâh also forbade Rasulullâh Sallallâhu 'alayhi wasallam from
performing the janâzah [funeral] Salâh for the Munâfiqîn.

This Sûrah also details the recipients of zakâh as:

1.The poor

2.Slaves who are buying their freedom

3.The destitute

4.Those in debt

5.The collectors of zakâh

6.Those in Allâh's path

7.Those who need to be inclined to Islâm and

8.Travellers.

In brief, Sûrah Taubah contains the following subject matter:

1.Certain battles and related incidents.

2.The treaties with the Mushrikîn and the declaration of
exoneration from all Kuffâr and Mushrikîn.

3.Prohibition of fighting during the days of Hajj.

4.Restriction of entry into the Haram for non-Muslims.

5.The command for the Ahlul Kitâb to either accept Islâm or
pay the jizya.

6.Reproaching those who were negligent in participating in
Jihâd.

7.Specifying the recipients of zakâh.

8.Identifying the Munâfiqîn and the Mu'minîn.

May Allâh grant us all the Taufîq to practise on the injunctions
detailed in this Sûrah. Âmîn.

Taraweeh Summary - NIGHT 6

This summary of the sixth Tarawîh covers the Seventh Juz.

Beginning of the Seventh Juz

Allâh also draws man's attention to the fact that the person who
forbids something that Allâh has permitted will be guilty of following
his carnal desires [his nafs] instead of Allâh's injunctions. An
example of this is the concept of monasticism that the Christians
devised by which they would totally forsake the world and forbid
themselves Halâl pleasures. This concept is incorrect and
impermissible.

Allâh also reminds the Mu'minîn that they will be taken to task for
every oath that they fail to fulfil. The Kafâra [atonement] for
breaching such a promise is that a person should either feed ten poor
people, clothe them, set a slave free or fast for three days. Allâh
also urges Muslims not to take intoxicants, not to gamble and not to
divine the future. Allâh declares these acts to be Harâm (temptations)
of Shaytân.

Sûrah Mâ'idah mentions how Allâh will question every Nabî about his
nation. They will declare that they only did as they were told and
that Allâh alone knows the reality of all hidden matters. The Sûrah
also mentions the penalty for hunting an animal while in the state of
Ihrâm. Of course, every such situation has its own unique set of
circumstances, which will necessitate a unique ruling. These matters
should be referred to the men of knowledge.

On the Day of Qiyâmah Allâh will remind Hadhrat Îsa Alayhis Salâm
about his miraculous birth, about the various miracles that Allâh
allowed him to perform and about the favours that Allâh bestowed on
him and his mother Hadhrat Maryam (R.A). Allâh will then ask him, O
Îsa, son of Maryam! Did you tell the people, 'Take myself and my
mother both as deities instead of Allâh?' Hadhrat Îsa will deny that
he ever encouraged this and will accede, 'You know what is in my
heart... I only told them what You had commanded me with i.e. 'Worship
Allâh, Who is my Rabb and your Rabb!' ... If You punish them, then
verily they are Your slaves, and if You pardon them, then surely You
are the Mighty, the Wise.' (verses 116-118 of Sûrah Mâ'idah).

Sûrah An'âm commences after Sûrah Ma'idah. Allâh mentions that it has
always been the practice of the Kuffâr to ridicule the Ambiyâ and to
call them wizards. However, Allâh's Dîn will always conquer and rise,
while the Kuffâr will suffer a terrible doom for their falsehood.

Whereas Allâh provides sustenance to people and does not require any
sustenance from them, other gods cannot provide sustenance for their
devotees but rather require sustenance from them. Allâh exhorts
Rasulullâh Sallallâhu 'alayhi wasallam not to be distressed about the
aversion of the Kuffâr, but to be patient because Allâh will
definitely assist him. The Sûrâh makes it clear that none will be
required to account for the actions of another on the Day of Qiyâmah
and every person will be held responsible for his/her own acts. On the
Day of Qiyâmah the Kuffâr will come to learn the errors of their ways.
On that day, all kingdoms will belong solely to Allâh and none shall
have any say in any matter.

After describing how Hadhrat Ibrahîm recognised Allâh as his true
Deity, Allâh tells the Quraysh of Makkah that his people denied him
just as they (the Quraysh) deny the message of Rasulullâh Sallallâhu
'alayhi wasallam. The conclusion is drawn from this that the Quraysh
also stand to face the same destructive consequences as the people of
Hadhrat Ibrahîm Alayhis Salâm did.

Allâh also points out that the worst oppressor is the one who lies
about Allâh and who rebels against Allâh's commands. Oppressors will
never be successful, especially in the Âkhirâh. Allâh has promised
that the Day of Qiyâmah shall take place. Allâh advises the Women
never to swear the gods of others so that they do not retort by
swearing Allâh.

Ramadhaan - Q A [ PART 4 ]
EAR BUD
Does using an ear bud nullify the fast?
No, using an ear bud does not nullify the fast.

FASTING IN SHAWWAAL
Is it permissible to make up for the days missed during Ramadhaan
while people are fasting the six fasts of Shawwaal?
Yes, it is permissible to make up for the days missed during the month
of Ramadhaan while people are fasting the six days of Shawwaal.

FOLLOWING AN IMAAM VIA TRANSMITTER
Is it permissible to follow the Salaah at home with the Imaam
performing Salaah in the Masjid, through the agency of a transmitter?
Among the conditions for the validity of following the Imaam in
congregational prayer is the 'UNIFORMITY OF PLACE' between the Imaam
and the follower. [Sagheery Pg. 267]

It follows from the above texts that the following of the Imaam in
prayers from home through the transmitter whilst the Imaam is leading
the congregation in the Masjid, is invalid. The basis of this
invalidity is the absence of the fundamental condition of 'UNIFORMITY
OF PLACE' that determines congregationalism in prayer.

MOUTHWASH
Is it permissible to use mouthwash while fasting?
It is Makrooh (undesirable) to use mouthwash while fasting. If however
some of the mouthwash does happen to go down the throat the fast will
break.

INJECTIONS
Is it permissible for one to take injections while fasting?
It is permissible for one to take injections while he his fasting. The
substance introduced into the body by injection is generally
introduced through the veins and the effect of it does not directly
reach the stomach and the brain (head); it passes by a way that the
Fuqahaa do not normally refer to as Manfaz (passage way). However, if
the injection is injected directly into the brain or stomach the fast
will be void.

SEVERE HEADACHE
If a person broke his fast due to a severe headache then is he
permitted to break his fast, and is there Kaffaarah for this?
If he broke his fast because of the severe headache becoming
unbearable, and by keeping the fast his headache and illness will
increase drastically, then he will be permitted to break his fast.
However, he is required to keep its Qadha after Ramadhaan. There is no
Kaffaarah in this instance. [Tahtaawi p. 373, Bahrur Raaiq Vol.2 p.
281]

WOMEN AND CONGREGATIONAL TARAWEEH
Can women participate in Taraaweeh Salaah in congregation (Jamaat)?
Yes, women will be allowed to participate in the Taraaweeh Salaah, if
congregational, if held at their homes behind their husband, son or
any other Mahram.

DUAA AND FASTING
If a person forgets to say the du'a when breaking the fast, will his
fast still hold?
Yes, even though a person forgets to say the du'a when breaking the
fast, his fast will still hold and be regarded as valid.

INTERNAL EXAMINATION
Will a woman's fast break if she has a internal examination, i.e.
where the doctor uses his/her finger to check inside the patient's
private part?
The fast will only break if any lubricant, oil, or water is applied on
the finger before inserting it, and also if the finger is inserted,
taken out and the same finger (which will now be moist) is reinserted.
If a dry finger is inserted once (and not reinserted immediately
thereafter) then the fast will remain intact. However if any medicine
is inserted into the private part, then whether it is inserted with
the finger or with any other instrument, it will invalidate the fast.

Ramadhaan - Q A [ PART 3 ]
AGE OF FASTING
Who can and cannot fast? At what age is a person eligible for fasting?
Are the disabled required to fast?
Fasting becomes obligatory on all Muslims as soon as they reach the
age of maturity. This may differ slightly form one child to another
hence the reluctance to set an age. Young children between the ages of
6 to 9 years generally show an eagerness to fast and should be
encouraged to manage parts of days, full days or alternate days as a
means of training. Most children would be fasting from the age of 10
and it would be quite inappropriate for a child to go beyond the age
of 14 or 15 and not be fasting regularly unless they fell into the
'exempt' category.
Those who are sick, elderly, menstruating women, travellers as well as
expectant and breast feeding mothers if they feel any danger to
themselves or the nursing infants are exempt from fasting. With the
exception of the chronically ill, all of the others mentioned have to
make up later on for missed days of fasting.
A physical disability ie deafness, blindness, lameness or to be
without a limb, rarely prevents a person from fasting. However if it
is coupled with mental incapacity or a person is mentally
incapacitated alone, fasting is not required of them.

LIP-STICK:
During fasting, can a person use lipsticks and other make-up?
It is important to remember that the month of Ramadan is not a time
for attracting or drawing attention to oneself. It is a month during
which we should dedicate our time to spiritually uplifting ourselves
through prayers, reading and useful study individually, with the
family or with other good Muslims.

Lipstick and make up do not breakthe fast. However, one should
consider two issues:
a) Many of these products contain Haraam and impure ingredients. In
such a case, it will not be permissible to use such a make up.
b) Many such products prevent water from reaching the skin. In such a
case the Wudhu or Ghusl performed with such make up will not be valid.
Nevertheless, the fast is not broken. (Ahsanul Fatawa, vol.4 pg.434)

LIP-BALMS
During fasting, can a person use lipbalms?
However since the winter weather can be rather harsh and does tend to
bring about sores to the lips, - balms which soothe such complaints
can be used to protect the skin, sparingly and lightly on the
outer-skin of the lips. It is permissable to use it during fasting.

SUHUR TIME -UP
Is the person allowed to finish their Suhur meal having started it
even though the time comes to begin fasting?
Having a salaah timetable is important so that the Suhur meal can be
timed and organised to safely end a few minutes before Suhur time
ends. One of the most important lessons of Ramadan is that of
acquiring a sense of discipline and self control. Part of that
essential training is responding to the commands of Allah without
delay and this is just one of those times when sincerity of intention
and acting accordingly must be clear and unambiguous. If you happen to
wake up late you will simply have missed Suhur but should fast as
required.

NEW REVERTS AND FASTING
How should a new recent convert be advised regarding Ramadan if they
have only recently accepted Islam in this year?
When someone accepts Islam they are generally at the very base of the
learning curve and therefore should be treated with the gentle
sensitivity such situations require. It also depends on age, maturity,
physical strength and wellbeing. Converts to Islam come from a host of
backgrounds and situations whereby many issues have to be considered.
It is best to encourage them to fast as one might encourage a child in
the training period mentioned above. On the other hand, with your
support, they may wish to exert themselves and fast the entire month
or the greater part of it. At this time of the year fasting is clearly
not as taxing for some as it is in mid - Summer.

LUNCH FUNCTIONS DURING RAMADHAAN AT WORK
What is expected of Muslims whose work during the month of Ramadan
could include lunch functions, socialising with clients etc.?
Such trivialities do not fall into the category of exemptions from
fasting. In a world where every material and social norm is
immediately at hand or indulged in it is indeed an individual quality
if one can refrain from what is expected or demanded by colleagues
just because it is socially acceptable. It is best to try to readjust
your schedule to avoid such occasions or if you are in a position to
delegate such responsibilities then do so. On the other hand you could
just come right out and state your situation and hopefully a
considerate boss and work colleagues will happily relieve you from
unnecessary demands at this time.

Ramadhaan - Q A [ PART 2 ]
WET DREAM
During Ramdhan, if one has a wet dream (self relief during sleep), is
the fast valid?
If one has a wet dream during fasting, the fast is still valid.

MENSES
1. If a female gets her period during her fast, can she break the fast
right away or she has to wait till the end?
If a female gets her periods during fasting, she may eat immediately
thereafter. However, she should not do so in public and in the
presence of other fasting people.

2. A female starts menstruating while fasting. What if she stops
menstruating during fasting? How should she conduct herself?
If her menses commenced while fasting, she can eat (not in public). If
her menses stopped while fasting, she should abstain from eating,
drinking, etc. but (in both instances) make up for the day by keeping
a Qadhaa fast after Ramadaan. (Aalamgiri vol.1 pg.214; Rashidiyya)

BATHING WHILST FASTING
I've been told not to take bath when I'm fasting, either before fasting
or after iftar I can take a bath. Please tell me whether this is true.
It is permissible to take a bath while fasting. The information given
to you is incorrect.

PREGNANCY POST BIRTH
1. Is a pregnant woman or one who has just delivered, permitted to
fast in the month of Ramadhaan?
The fast of a pregnant woman is valid. However, due to weakness during
pregnancy, she is exempt from fasting. After delivery of the baby,
during Nifaas (bleeding after birth), she cannot fast.

2. A woman delivered a baby about a month ago through a ceassarean
operation. The doctor said that the operation wound may take upto 6
months to recover. She is also breast-feeding the baby. She has been
adviced to keep herself healthy with proper intake of food. Since
Ramadan is commencing after 1 month, is it permissible for her to miss
her fasts in the month of Ramadan and make up for it later. Please
advice.
Allah Ta ala says in the Qur aan, If a person is sick (whilst in
Ramadhaan) or on a journey, then complete fast on other days (besides
Ramadhaan). If by not eating there is harm feared to either the woman
or her child, it will be permissible for her to continue eating and
keep Qadhaa of Ramadhaan whenever she is able to.

Ramadhaan - Q A [ PART 1 ]
NOSE DROPS, EYE DROPS
Can a person who is sick inhale some menthol type medicine through the
nose to clear the head during fasting in Ramadan? Can a person put eye
drops in their eye during Fasting in Ramadan?
It is not permissible to inhale medicine during fasting. It is
permissible to use eye drops during fasting.

SWIMMING
Can one swim while fasting ?
It is permissible. Care should be taken that no water enters the
mouth. It will, however, be best to abstain and use the precious
moments of this month in Ibaadat.

2. Is it permissible to brush teeth while fasting?
It is makrooh to use toothpaste during fasting. One may use the
miswaak during fasting.

BLOOD TEST
1. If blood is taken out of the body, does this break the fast?
Taking out blood during fasting does not invalidate the fast.
2. I am diabetic and I am prone to fainting - can I take blood tests
to monitor my blood sugar during ramadan?
Shari'ah (laws of Islam) are balanced and have taken into
consideration different circumstances. If a person is ill to such an
extent that he will faint due to fasting, then he will be excused from
fasting. Such a person may give Fidya (compensation) for not fasting.
However, taking blood tests during fasting is permissible and that
does not invalidate the fast.

INJECTIONS WHILST FASTING
Is it permissible to take an injection while fasting and does that
nullify the fast?
It is permissible to take an injection during fasting. The injection
does not nullify the fast. (Ahsanul Fataawa vol.4 pg.432)

ASTHMA PUMP
I am an asthma patient. Is it permissible for me to use the inhaler
during fasting? The inhaler contains salbutamol (liquid medication).
If it is not permissible, what should I do when I get an asthma attack
during fasting?
Since the inhaler contains a medication (salbutamol), the use of it in
the state of fasting will invalidate the fast. We advise you take
medication at the time of Suhoor to avoid an asthma attack. However,
should you get the attack during fasting, if there is no adequate
alternative which does not break the fast, you may use the inhaler and
make-up for that fast later (make Qadhaa).

LIP BALMS
Are you allowed to put anything on your lips during fasting, such as
lip balm or vaseline to help them from burning?
It is permissible to use a lip balm in the state of fasting.

Boycott Israel [IslamCity] The Month of Sha'baan Laylatul Bara'ah

The Month of Sha'baan Laylatul Bara'ah
The month of Sha'baan enjoys a very special place in the Islamic
Calendar because in this month lies a very auspicious night known as
LAYLATUL- BARAA'AH (The Night of Emancipation; The night of Freedom
from fire). The word Sha'baan means branches of good a'maal (deeds).

FASTING IN SHA'BAAN:
In this month Nabi(sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) used to fast more
than in the preceding months. Hadhrat Ayesha(radhiyallahu anha)
reports that: I never saw the Messenger of Allah(sallallahu alaiyhi
wassallam) fasting in a month so profusely as he did in the month of
Sha'baan. He used to fast in that month leaving only a few days,
rather, he used to fast almost the whole of the month. (Tirmizi)

However, Nabi(sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) advised in several other
Ahaadeeth that when the (first) half of Sha'baan has passed, one
should not fast (i.e. during the second half of the month). Ulama
explain that one should not unduly exert and strain one's self by
fasting much (in the second half), for fear of one's health
deteriorating before Ramadhaan begins; instead one should rather build
strength and prepare one's self for the fasts of Ramadhaan. However,
should one have the strength and health, then it would be meritorious
and virtous to keep fasts according to one's ability.

SPECIAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THE NIGHT OF BARAA'AH
On this night Allah's Special Mercy and Forgiveness descends upon His
fortunate servants from the commencement of the night (i.e. from
Maghrib) until dawn. Furthermore, the announcements seeking out those
who want forgiveness well exceed those, which occur every other night
of the year.

It is narrated from Hadhrat Abdullah bin Amr(radhiyallahu anhu) that
Rasullullah(sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) said: Allah looks with
special attention towards His creation on the fifteenth night of
Sha'baan and forgives all His servants except two categories of
people, the person who harbors enmity(hatred) and a murderer. ( Imam
Ahmad reports this Hadith with a slightly weak chain of narrators-
Targhib-wat-Tarhib)

Hadhrat Uthmaan bin Abil 'Aas(radhiyallahu anhu) narrates that
Rasullullah(sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) said: : On the fifteenth
night qf Sha'baan Allah's (special mercy) descends to the nearest
heavens. Thereafter, a proclaimer announces: Is there anyone who
seeks forgiveness so that I may forgive him? Is there anyone who
desires anything so that I may grant his wishes? Allah thus fulfills
the requests of all accept the adulteress and idolator. ( Baihaqi has
reported this Hadith -Durre Manthur Page 27 Vol.6)

UNFORTUNATE PEOPLE

According to the Ahaadeeth, certain people are deprived of Allah's
mercy even on this auspicious night. These unfortunate souls are:
1) Those who ascribe partners unto Allah.
2) Those who harbour enmity against others.
3) Those who habitually consume alcohol.
4) Those who disobey their parents.
5) Those men who wear their trousers etc.below their ankles.
6) Those who commit adultery and murder.
7) Those who sever family ties.
Every Muslim should take stock of oneself and if one is involved in
any of the above vices, one should turn to Allah and sincerely implore
for forgiveness, lest one be deprived on this night.

SINCERE TAUBAH(REPENTANCE)

Allah Ta'aala says in the Noble Qur'aan: O you who believe, turn to
Allah with sincrere repentance, in the hope that your Lord will remove
from you your evil deeds. (Quran: Surah Tahreem - Para 28).
One should turn towards Allah with sincere regret and shame for the
sins that one has committed. One should seek Allah's forgiveness for
one's sins and make a firm resolution and promise not to commit sin
again. However, sins relating to the rights of fellow beings will not
be forgiven by mere taubah alone. Allah will only forgive such sins if
forgiveness is first sought from the person who had been harmed and a
sincere effort to redress the wrong committed against him/her is made.

What should one do on this night?
During this night one should engage oneself in Salaah, Qur'aan
Tilaawat, Du'aa, Istighfaar and Zikr, according to one's ability and
strength.

PREPARATIONS FOR RAMADHAAN

Nabi(sallallahu alaiyhi wassallam) frequently recited the following
du'aa: 0 Allah bless us in Rajab and Sha'baan and make us reach
Ramadhaan.

We should earnestly begin preparing for Ramadhaan during this month of
Sha'baan by making Istighfaar and cleansing ourselves of sins. We must
endeavour to curtail our desires of committing sins, especially with
the eyes, ears, tongue, mind and heart. Then we should begin
inculcating good practices and bring about a spiritual and moral
transformation in our lives in anticipation and eagerness for
Ramadhaan.

The virtue of this night as established from Ahaadeeth

PROPHETIC GEMS FOR RAMADHAAN
A compilation of Hadeeth
pertaining to Ramadhaan - to be read DAILY during Ramadhaan

The "Prophetic Gems for Ramadhaan"
is a booklet which presents the various Hadeeth pertaining to
Ramadhaan. The compilation is kept brief and sub-divided into 30 days of
Ramadhaan. This allows the reader to read the various Hadith on a day-to-day
basis, which only takes 3 MINUTES PER DAY.

It would be meritious and recommended that the
"Prophetic Gems for Ramadhaan" are read daily in the
month of Ramadhaan at a suitable time. Some suggestions that may prove useful
are:-

AT HOME: A member of the family reads these
sections daily to the rest of the family. eg. After iftaar

AT THE MASJID: The imaam may read to the
congregation daily eg. after Maghrib salaah

[IslamCity] Sometimes and Always

2005-03-16 Thread AL-ISLAAH PUBLICATIONS

Sometimes and Always

Sometimes occasionally
goes by the rules but mostly does his own thing. He is more worried about being
everyone's friend than doing his school work. He gets into trouble a lot but
managed to charm his way through it. His parents have gone to school a lot to
have parent teacher conferences.
Always is a boy who always goes by the book,
never breaks the rules and is never in trouble. He always pleased his family and
friends and never let them down. He is usually stressed out and gets headaches
and stomach aches from stress.
Always became very ill one day and had to be
rushed to the hospital. The doctors were baffled at what could be wrong with
him. Many tests were run and in the end they were inconclusive. He was released
and went home only to be stressed some more about missing school and possibly
letting everyone down if he received a grade less than an A.
Now
Sometimes was doing poorly in school and he knew it.
He decided that he would just do what he could to get by, he thought " Why
should I stress out look what happened to Always."

Well
Always was having the same thoughts " Why should I
stress and make myself sick, sometimes gets by ok" and at that time he started
missing school and just barely got passing grades.
Their parents decided
to sit the boys down and talk to them and tell them that they just need to do
their best and that is all that can be asked of them. They do not need to stress
and get ill but also do not slack off and get failing grades.
Their parents just
wanted them to know that whatever they did, they would be proud of them as long
as they did their best.
Finally,
Sometimes spoke up and said " You mean even if we
don't do well all the time that you will still love us and be proud of us ?? "
The parents answered the question, "Yes we will love you , ALWAYS "

The
moral is:
To
our children: Do your best at whatever you can do within your capability;
that is all that can be expected of you and you will turn out just fine; your
parents will still love and care foryou, no matter
what.
And for
parents: Do not pressurise your children to perform or excel according to
your dreams. Don't live your dreams through your children. Allow them the
opportunity to compete within himself or herself and excel in their own special
abilities.

[IslamCity] Don't we All

2005-03-14 Thread AL-ISLAAH PUBLICATIONS

Don't we all
I was parked in front of
the mall wiping off my car. I had just come from the car wash and was waiting
for my wife to get out of work. Coming my way from across the parking lot was
what society would consider a hobo, street beggar, trampor vagabond.
>From the looks of him, he had no car, no home, no clean clothes, and no money.

There are times when you feel generous
but there are other times that you just don't want to be bothered. This was one
of those "don't want to be bothered times." "I hope he doesn't ask me for
any money," I thought. He didn't. He came and sat on the curb in front of the
bus stop but he didn't look like he could have enough money to even ride the
bus.

After a few minutes he spoke. "That's
a very pretty car," he said. He was ragged but he had an air of dignity around
him. His scraggly blond beard kept more than his face warm. I said, "thanks,"
and continued wiping off my car. He sat there quietly as I worked. The
expected plea for money never came. As the silence between us widened something
inside said, "ask him if he needs any help." I was sure that he would say "yes"
but I held true to the inner voice.

"Do you need any help?" I asked. He
answered in three simple but profound words that I shall never forget.

We often look for wisdom in great men
and women. We expect it from those of higher learning and
accomplishments.
I expected nothing but an
outstretched grimy hand. He spoke the three words that shook me. "Don't we
all?" he said.
I was feeling high and mighty, successful
and important, above a hobo in the street, until those three words hit me like a
twelve gauge shotgun. Don't we all?
I needed help. Maybe not for bus fare or a
place to sleep, but I needed help. I reached in my wallet and gave him not only
enough for bus fare, but enough to get a warm meal and shelter for the day.
Those three little words still ring true. No matter how much you have, no matter
how much you have accomplished, you need help too. No matter how little you
have, no matter how loaded you are with problems, even without money or a place
to sleep, you can give help. Even if it's just a compliment, you can give that.
You never know when you may see someone that appears to have it all. They are
waiting on you to give them what they don't have. A different perspective on
life, a glimpse at something beautiful, a respite from daily chaos, that only
you through a torn world can see.
Maybe the man was just a homeless stranger
wandering the streets. Maybe he was more than that.He was sent by a power
that is great and wise, to minister to a soul too comfortable in himself to
teach him a lesson. Don't we all? Author: Unknown

[IslamCity] The Splashes of Life......

The Splashes of Life..
My grandfather took me to the fish pond on the farm when I was
about seven, and he told me to throw a stone into the water. He told me to watch
the circles created by the stone. Then he asked me to think of myself as that
stone person. "You may create lots of splashes in your life but the
waves that come from those splashes will disturb the peace of all your fellow
creatures," he said. "Remember that you are responsible for what you put in your
circle and that circle will also touch many other circles. You will need to live
in a way that allows the good that comes from your circle to send the peace of
that goodness to others. The splash that comes from anger or jealousy will send
those feelings to other circles. You are responsible for both."
That was the first time I realized each person creates the inner
peace or discord that flows out into the world. We cannot create world peace if
we are riddled with inner conflict, hatred, doubt, or anger. We radiate the
feelings and thoughts that we hold inside, whether we speak them or not.
Whatever is splashing around inside of us is spilling out into the world,
creating beauty or discord with all other circles of life.Author Unknown

[IslamCity] Dealing with the Elderly: An Etiquette Tipsheet

Dealing with the Elderly: An Etiquette Tipsheet
By Samana SiddiquiReprinted
from Soundvision
How often is it that we see people, Muslim or not, uttering worse than the
'Uff' Allah orders us not to say in dealing with their aging parents?
Keeping Islamic etiquette when it comes to our parents or seniors is hard in
a culture that's becoming increasingly rude.
Below are five tips that can help:
1. Remember that the Elderly are people too
They aren't cast offs, they are not burdens. They were once our age, young,
with dreams, aspirations, in most cases families. They are individuals who have
contributed to society by raising kids, working in a number of professions, and
they were and can be productive now too. See them as people, who deserve
respect.
2. Spend quality time with them
This means spending quality time with them, taking meals with them. We're
less likely to treat someone we consider a friend rudely than someone who we
deem a stranger.
3. Take a break from caregiving
If you're one of the Muslims who, Alhamdulillah, has taken on the task of
caring for parents who are seniors, take a day off from the 'job'. Give yourself
a break by asking help from a relative who lives nearby or a friend. This will
ease the pressure and stress, which can lead to a buildup in emotions,
especially anger and frustration.
4. Give someone else a break from caregiving
If you know of a brother or sister who is taking care of his/her parent(s),
give them a break. Take their parents out for a day or just to your home for
meals. Do what you can to ease the pressure. This can also benefit you if you
never grew up around seniors. The experience can teach patience, kindness and
you can even learn from seniors.
5. Be Patient
While this is easier said than done, it is necessary. While many of us tend
to exercise patience with kids in the face of bad behavior, this practice is
often thrown out the window when it comes to our seniors.
Think of them as children now too, part of the life cycle. They are frail
physically as well as emotionally. There is so much emphasis on building the
self-esteem of our kids, but we often see people tearing down the self-esteem of
our elders.
We can only truly stop this practice with patience.
And a special note should be made of long stories, which seniors are often
fond of sharing. Instead of interrupting or expressing exasperation, perhaps
take out a tape recorder, or better yet, write down the story being recounted.
That way you will force yourself to listen, and you'll have a great historical
document once the narration is complete.
