Chapter 7: The Muslim and His Neighbors The true Muslim is tolerant towards his neighbor It comes as no surprise, then, that the Muslim who is truly guided by his faith is tolerant towards his neighbor, and is humble, easy-going and kind in his dealings with him. He does not stop him from using and enjoying his home, as the Prophet (s.a.w.s.) said: “No-one should prevent his neighbor from fastening a piece of wood to his wall.” (Bukhari and Muslim) He likes for his neighbor what he likes for himself The Muslim who is truly guided by his religion is soft-hearted and alert, and knows how to communicate well. He is sensitive towards his neighbor, sharing his joy and commiserating him in his sorrow. He likes for him what he likes for himself, following the teaching of the Prophet (s.a.w.s.): “None of you truly believes until he likes for his brother what he likes for himself.” (Bukhari and Muslim) In a report given by Muslim from Anas (r.a.), the Prophet (s.a.w.s.) said: “By the One in Whose hand is my soul, no servant truly believes until he likes for his neighbor (or he said: his brother) what he likes for himself.” The true Muslim does not forget to take care of his neighbors who may be affected by the smell of cooking or barbecues coming from his house, which may provoke feelings of hunger, especially if they are poor and cannot afford much food. There may be small children, orphans, widows or elderly among them. The true Muslim is always alert to the spirit of social responsibility which the Prophet (s.a.w.s.) instilled in the Muslims in the words he spoke to Abu Dharr (r.a.): “O Abu Dharr (r.a.), if you cook some broth, add extra water to it, and take care of your neighbor.” (Muslim) According to another report he said, “If you cook some broth, add extra water to it, then think of the families in your neighborhood and send some of it to them.” (Muslim) The Muslim’s conscience will not let him ignore his neighbor’s poverty and difficulty while he is living a life of ease and plenty. How can he bear to see the difference between himself and his neighbor, when the words of the Prophet (s.a.w.s.) are ringing in his ears? “He does not believe in me, who eats his fill while his neighbor beside him is hungry, and he knows about it.” [2] “He is not a believer, who eats his fill while his neighbor is hungry.” [3] [2] Reported by al-Tabarani and al-Bazzar, with a hasan isnad. [3] Reported by al-Tabarani and Abu Ya‘la; the men in its isnad are trustworthy (thiqat.).

Chapter 6: The Muslim and His Relatives (Arham) The Muslim upholds the ties of kinship according to the teachings of Islam The true Muslim upholds the ties of kinship and does not let his worldly concerns, wealth, wife or children distract him from keeping in touch with his relatives, honoring them and helping them. In doing so, he is following Islamic teaching, which regulates these relationships and ranks them in order of priority and degree of closeness, starting with the mother, then moving on to the father, then other relatives, from the most closely-related to others who are more distantly related. A man came to the Prophet (s.a.w.s.) and asked, “O Messenger of Allah, who is most deserving of my good company?” He (s.a.w.s.) said, “Your mother, your mother, your mother, then your father, then those who are most closely related to you.” (Bukhari and Muslim) The Muslim earns two rewards when he treats his relatives with kindness and respect: one reward for maintaining the relationship, and another reward for giving charity. This gives him a greater incentive to give to his relatives, if they are in need. By doing so, he will earn two rewards from Allah (S.W.T.), and will also win the affection of his relatives. This is what the Prophet (s.a.w.s.) encouraged Muslims to do, in the hadith narrated by Zaynab al-Thaqafiyyah, the wife of ‘Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud (r.a.), who said: “The Prophet (s.a.w.s.) said: ‘O women, give in charity even if it is some of your jewelry.’ She said, I went back to ‘Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud and told him, ‘You are a man of little wealth, and the Prophet (s.a.w.s.) has commanded us to give charity, so go and ask him whether it is permissible for me to give you charity. If it is, I will do so; if not, I will give charity to someone else.’ ‘Abdullah said, ‘No, you go and ask.’ So I went, and I found a woman of the Ansar at the Prophet’s door, who also had the same question. We felt too shy to go in, out of respect, so Bilal came out and we asked him, ‘Go and tell the Messenger of Allah that there are two women at the door asking you: Is it permissible for them to give sadaqah to their husbands and the orphans in their care? But do not tell him who we are.’ So Bilal went in and conveyed this message to the Prophet (s.a.w.s.), who asked, ‘Who are they?’ Bilal said, ‘One of the women of the Ansar, and Zaynab.’ The Prophet (s.a.w.s.) asked, ‘Which Zaynab is it?’ Bilal said, ‘The wife of Abdullah.’ The Prophet (s.a.w.s.) said, ‘They will have two rewards, the reward for upholding the relationship, and the reward for giving charity.’” (Bukhari and Muslim) The Prophet (s.a.w.s.) used to reaffirm the priority given to kind treatment of relatives at every opportunity. When the ayah: “By no means shall you attain righteousness unless you give “freely” of that which you love…” (Qur’an 3:92) was revealed, Abu Talhah went to the Prophet (s.a.w.s.) and said, “O Messenger of Allah, Allah (S.W.T.) says: “By no means shall you attain righteousness unless you give (freely) of that which you love.” The most beloved of my properties is Bayraha’ (a date orchard), which I now give up as Sadaqah to Allah (S.W.T.), hoping to store up reward with Him. O Messenger of Allah, dispose of it as you will.” The Prophet (s.a.w.s.) said: “Bravo! You have got the best deal for your property. I have heard what you said, and I think that you should divide it among your relatives.” Abu Talhah said, “I will do so, O Messenger of Allah.” He divided it among his relatives and (paternal) cousins. (Bukhari and Muslim) The Prophet (s.a.w.s.) looked far back into history and evoked ties of kinship going back centuries, when he enjoined good treatment of the people of Egypt, as is recorded in the hadith narrated by Muslim: “You will conquer Egypt, so when you conquer it, treat its people well, for they have protection (dhimmah) and the ties of kinship (rahm).” Or he said: “... protection and the relationship by marriage

Bismillah [IslamCity] The Virtues of the Month of Sha'ban
Sha'ban is the name of the (eighth) month of the Islamic lunar calendar, and it is so called because in this month the Arabs used to disperse (tasha'aba) in search of water, or it was said that it is so called because it sha'aba (branches out or emerges) i.e., it appears between the months of Rajab and Ramadan. Fasting in Sha'ban Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger (p.b.u.h.) used to fast until we thought he would never break his fast, and not fast until we thought he would never fast. I never saw the Messenger of Allah fasting for an entire month except in Ramadan, and I never saw him fast more than he did in Sha'ban. (Bukhari and Muslim). According to a report narrated by Muslim, He used to fast all of Sha'ban, he used to fast all but a little of Sha'ban. A group of scholars, including Ibn al-Mubarak and others thought that the Prophet (p.b.u.h.) did not fast all of Sha'ban, but he fasted most of it. This is supported by a report in Saheeh Muslim narrated from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: I never knew of him - meaning the Prophet (p.b.u.h.) - fasting for any entire month apart from Ramadan. According to another report also narrated by Muslim, Aisha said: I never saw him fast for any entire month from the time he came to Madeenah, apart from Ramadan. It was reported in Bukhari and Muslim that Ibn 'Abbas said: The Messenger of Allah (p.b.u.h.) did not fast any entire month apart from Ramadan. Ibn 'Abbas regarded it as Makrooh to fast any entire month apart from Ramadan. Ibn Hajar (may Allah have mercy on him) said: He observed more voluntary fasts in Sha'ban than in any other month, and he used to fast most of Sha'ban. Usamah Ibn Zayd (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I do not see you fasting in any other month like you fast in Sha'ban.' He said, 'That is a month to which people do not pay attention, between Rajab and Ramadan, and it is a month in which deeds are lifted up to the Lord of the Worlds. I like for my deeds to be lifted up when I am fasting.' (Nasa'i). According to a report narrated by Abu Dawood, he said: The most beloved of months for the Messenger of Allah (p.b.u.h.) to fast in was Sha'ban, and his fasting in Sha'ban was continuous with his fasting in Ramadan. (Classed as Saheeh by al-Albani) Ibn Rajab (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Fasting in Sha'ban is better than fasting in the Sacred Months, and the best of voluntary fasts are those that are (observed in the months) closest to Ramadan, before or after. The status of these fasts is like that of al-Sunan al-Rawatib which are done before and after fard (obligatory prayers) and which make up for any shortfall in the number of obligatory prayers. The same applies to fasts observed before and after Ramadan. Just as al-Sunan al-Rawatib are better than other kinds of voluntary prayers, so fasts observed (in the months) before and after Ramadan are better than fasts at other times. The phrase Sha'ban is a month to which people do not pay attention, between Rajab and Ramadan indicates that because it comes between two important months, the Sacred Month of Rajab and the month of fasting, people are preoccupied with those two months and they do not pay attention to Sha'ban. Many people think that fasting in Rajab is better than fasting in Sha'ban, because Rajab is one of the Sacred Months, but this is not the case. In the Hadeeth quoted above there is an indication that even though certain times, places and people may be commonly thought to posses a particular virtue, there may be others that are better than them. It also indicates that it is Mustahabb (recommended) to make good use of the times when people tend to be negligent, by doing acts of worship. A group of the Salaf used to fill the time between Maghrib and Isha with prayer, saying that it was a time when many people were negligent. Another example is the remembrance of Allah (Dhikr) in the marketplace, because this means one is remembering Him in a place where people tend to be negligent and among people who are negligent. There are a number of benefits that come from making good use of times when people are often negligent, and using these times for worship, including the following: It is more concealing of one's good works, and hiding and concealing Nawafil (supererogatory) actions is better, especially fasting, because it is a secret between a slave and his Lord. Hence it was said that there is no element of showing off in fasting. One of the Salaf used to fast for years without anybody knowing about it; he would go from his home to the marketplace carrying two loaves of bread, which he would give away in charity, and he would fast. His family thought that he ate the bread, whilst the people in the marketplace thought that he had eaten at home. The Salaf thought it was Mustahabb for a person who was fasting to do things that would

Chapter 5: The Muslim and His Children He equally treats all his children One of the elements of wise upbringing is for the parents to treat all their children equally, and not to favor one of them over the others in any way. The child who feels that he is treated fairly and that he and his brothers are equal, will grow up with a healthy self-esteem, free from feelings of inferiority; he will not hate his brother, or eat his heart out with jealousy, but will be content, tolerant, kind and caring towards others. This is what Islam encourages and orders parents to do. Bukhari and Muslim narrated from al-Nu‘man ibn Bashir (r.a.): “My father brought me to the Prophet (s.a.w.s.) and said, ‘I have given this son of mine a slave I have.’ The Prophet (s.a.w.s.) asked him, ‘Have you given each of your children the same?’ He said, ‘No,’ so the Prophet (s.a.w.s.) told him: ‘Then take the slave back.’” According to another report Nu‘man said: “The Prophet (s.a.w.s.) asked, ‘Have you done the same for all your children?’ (My father) said, ‘No,’ so the Prophet (s.a.w.s.) said, ‘Fear Allah (S.W.T.) and treat all of your children equally.’ So my father went and took back his gift.” According to a third report: “The Prophet (s.a.w.s.) asked, ‘O Bishr, do you have any other children?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ The Prophet (s.a.w.s.) asked, ‘Will you give a similar gift to each of them?’ He said, ‘No.’ So the Prophet (s.a.w.s.) said, ‘Do not ask me to witness this, because I do not want to witness unfairness.’ Then he added, ‘Would you not like all of your children to treat you with equal respect?’ “ Bishr” said, ‘Of course.’ The Prophet (s.a.w.s.) told him: ’so do not do it.’” (Bukhari and Muslim) Therefore the Muslim who fears Allah (S.W.T.) treats all his children with equal fairness, and does not favor one above the other in giving gifts, spending money on him or in the way he treats him. So all of them will pray for him, love him and treat him with kindness and respect.

Pundit Vedaprakash Upadhyay is a Hindu Brahmin of Bengali origin. He is a research scholar at Allahabad University. After years of research, he published this book, and no less than eight pundits have endorsed and certified his points of argument as authentic. According to Hindu belief, the Hindu world awaits "the guide and leader", named Kalki
Avatar. However, the description as given in the holy scriptures of the Hindu points only to the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) of Arabia.Therefore, the Hindus of the whole world should not wait any longer for the arrival of Kalki Avatar (the spirit) and should readily accept Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) as Kalki Avatar. These are the FACTS verified and supported by eight other eminent pundits. What the author says is that Hindus, who are still anxiously awaiting the arrival of Kalki Avatar, are simply subjecting themselves to never ending pain. Because, such a great messenger has already arrived and departed from this world fourteen centuries ago. The author produces the following sound evidences from the Vedas and other holy books of the Hindu religion in support of his claim:1. In the Puranas (Hindu scriptures), it is stated that Kalki Avatar would be the last messenger of God in this world. He would be for guidance of the whole world and all human beings.
2. According to a Hindu religion prediction the birth of Kalki Avatar would take place in an isle, which again according to Hindu religion is Arab Region.3. In books of Hindus, the names of the father and the mother of Kalki Avatar are given as VISHNUBHAGAT and SUMAANI respectively. If we examine the meaning of these names we shall come to some very interesting conclusion. VISHNU (meaning God) + BHAGAT (meaning Slave). Slave of God = ABDULLAH (in Arabic) is the name of Prophet's (PBUH) Father. SUMAANI (meaning peace or calmness).Aamenah (in Arabic means peace) is the name of Prophet's (PBUH) Mother.4. In the religious books of Hindus, it is mentioned that the staple food of Kalki Avatar would be dates and olives and he would be the most honest and truthful person in the region. Without any doubt the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) is acclaimed to possess these qualities. 5. It is stated in Vedas (holy book of Hindu Religion) that the
birth of Kalki Avatar would take place in an honorable clan. This perfectly fits the Quraysh where Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) belonged to.6. God would teach Kalki Avatar through His messenger (angel) in a cave. Allah taught Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) through His messenger Jibraeel (Gabriel), in a cave known as Ghaar-e-Hira.7. God would provide Kalki Avatar with a very speedy horse to ride and travel the whole world and the seven skies. Indication of burraq (Horse) and Me'raaj (the night when Prophet [PBUH] travelled the seven skies). 8. God would provide Kalki Avatar with divine help. This was particularly proved in the Battle of Uhud.9. Another dazzling account given about Kalki Avatar was that he would be born on the 12th of a month. Whereas the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) was born on the 12th of Rabbi ul Awwal (Hijra Calendar). 10. Kalki Avatar would be an excellent horse rider and a swordsman.The author here draws the
attention of Hindus that the real days of horses and swords have gone and the present time of guns and missiles. So it would be foolish on the part of those who still expect Kalki Avatar, who should be an excellent rider and swordsman to come. In fact, the divine book, the Holy Qur'an, contains qualities and signs attributed to Kalki Avatar reflecting on the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH). Regards Muslim

that what my Allah (God) is doing right now is that he brought a Kafir and his kufur from a high
place to a lower level and ascend a 10 year old boy to the high level.

The man laughed at the boy and ridiculed the Muslims even more by saying,
A ten year old boy challenges me. Is
this all you people have to offer!
But the boy patiently reiterated his stance. He would challenge the man, and
with Allah`s help and guidance, he would put this to an end. The man finally
accepted.
The entire city gathered around a small hill where open addresses
were usually made. The man climbed to the top, and in a loud voice asked his first
question.
What is your God doing right
now?
The small boy thought for a little while and then told the man to climb down
the hill and to allow him to go up in order to address the question.
The man says What? You want me to
come down?
The boy says, Yes. I need to reply,
right?
The man made his way down and the small boy, age 10, with his little feet made
his way up.
This small child`s reply was Oh Allah
Almighty! You be my witness in front of all these people. You have just willed
that a Kafir be brought down to a low level, and that a Muslim be brought to a
high level!
The crowd cheered and screamed
TakbirAllah-hu-akbar!!!
The man was humiliated, but he boldly asked his Second question...
What existed before your God?
The small child thought and thought.
Then he asked the man to count backwards. Count from 10 backwards.
The man counted...10, 9 ,8 , 7 , 6,
5, 4, 3, 2, 1,0
The boy asked, What comes before 0 ?
The man: I don`t know...nothing.
The boy: Exactly. Nothing was before
Allah, for He is eternal and absolute.
The crowd cheered

The man, now completely frustrated, asked his final question.
In which direction is your Allah
facing?
The boy thought and thought.
He then asked for a candle. A candle was brought to him. The blessed child
handed it to the man and asked him to light it. The man did so and remarked,
What is this supposed to prove?
The young boy asked, In which
direction is light from the candle going?
The man responded, It is going in all
directions.
The boy: You have answered your own
question. Allah`s Light (noor) goes in all directions. He is everywhere. There
is no where that He cannot be found.
The crowd cheered againTakbir!Allah-hu-akbar!!!
The man was so impressed and so moved by the boy`s knowledge and spirituality,
that he embraced Islam and became a student of the young boy.
So ended the debate.

And unfortunately a lot of religious wars tend to be for other than religion. But the word jihad is probably one of the highest concepts that the Arabs and the Muslims have. It represents really the best of humankind. In the Qur'an it is never once used to express a military meaning. Not once. Comment: This is not true. Open any Quran commentary book and find for yourself. (See for example: surah 4 verse 95, surah 9 verse 41, and surah 61 verses 10-13) Interestingly, even Hamzah Yusuf himself knows that this statement is not entirely accurate. In his tape The Life of The Prophet Muhammad, tape number 9 Hamzah Yusuf - talking about the prophet SAAWS and his companions in Madinah- said: They are in a state of perpetual vigilance and war. This is jihad, his life is really a life of jihad, of struggle against the people who were bent on not seeing Islam spread which is important to us to take as a lesson if we really want to spread Islam ** Michael: It means does it not mean to go to war with yourself? Shaykh Hamza: Well, that's one of the meanings. It literally means if you look at the word, the root word is "jihad" which means to struggle, and juhd in the Arabic language means a struggle literally. So jihad is the act of struggling. And the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him, said that the greatest jihad is to struggle with your own soul's insidious suggestions. Comment: The root word of Jihad is actually jahada. It means 'fighting the enemies or doing ones utmost in fighting' (see lisaan Al-Arab by Ibn Mandhoor, Vol. 2 page 396. First edition, published by Dar Ihya at-Turath al-Arabi, Beirut 1988). The hadith mentioned at the end is a weak hadeeth (See the book of weak hadiths by Imam al-Albani, and the book of weak and fabricated Hadiths for Imam al-Shawkani). Sufis in general always quote this Hadith because it relieves them from waging the true Jihad. ** Shaykh Hamza (continues): And I think that really clarifies to the Muslims. Building a hospital in the Arab world and I've lived in the Arab world, I speak Arabic very well building a hospital, the Arabs will literally say what a great jihad that was when it was completed. Comment: This is not an accurate statement. Arabic is my native tongue and I have studied it at least one session every day - for 22 years. That phrase would never be used to describe such an effort. Instead, the Arab might say: what a great juhd which means effort. However the Shari' (legal) meaning of the term Jihad,' is The war Muslims wage to make the word of Allah superior against kuffar (disbelievers) who do not have a covenant with Muslims after being invited to Islam and rejecting the invitation. Reference: The Fiqh encyclopedia by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Kuwait ** Shaykh Hamza (continues): The idea of spending money for anything good those firefighters who were pulling people out of the World Trade Towers, they would be considered, that's an act of jihad. They would be considered mujahideen if they were described in Arabic. And I'm not exaggerating at all. That really is at the essence of this word. Comment: Again, this is not accurate. In Islamic literature, when the word mujahideen is used without any qualification, it means one and only one thing: those who fight in the battlefield for the sake of Allah. Please refer to the Quran (See for example the commentary on surah 4 verse 95) and search for the word Jihad and Mujahideen to gain a better understanding of how they are used. The following hadith in Sahih Bukhari, Vol. 4 Book 52, No. 44 shows how the prophet SAAWS understood the word jihad and mujahid (singular of mujahideen, please compare this hadith to what Hamzah Yusuf said: Narrated by Abu Huraira (RA): A man came to Allah's Apostle and said, "Instruct me as to such a deed that equals Jihad (in reward)." He replied, "I do not find such a deed." Then he added, "Can you, while the Muslim fighter is in the battle-field, enter your mosque to perform prayers without cease and fast and never break your fast?" The man said, "But who can do that?" Abu- Huraira added, "The Mujahid (i.e. Muslim fighter) is rewarded even for the footsteps of his horse while it wanders about (for grazing) tied by a long rope." However, if one does use the terms 'Jihad' or 'Mujahid' in a context other than their literal meaning, one must supplement these words with specific references that modify its literal meaning. facts? Dr. Zaghloul answered saying that he has a story to tell about this verse. He started explaining that at a time he delivered a lecture at Cardiff University in the West of Britain. The attendees included both Muslims and non-Muslims. A vital dialogue was taking place around scientific facts included in the Noble Quran. During the course of the lecture, a Muslim young man stood asking me, Sir Do you see in the Saying of Al Haq Tabarak wa Ta`ala (Allah the Truth) may He be Exalted - and he referred to the above mentioned verse - any indication to the scientific facts included in the Quran? Dr. Najjar answered: No because scientific astounding discoveries are interpreted through science whereas a miracle is something supernatural, which may not be interpreted through the usual. The splitting of the moon is a miracle, which happened to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in order to prove his prophecy. Tangible miracles are only a testimony of truth for those who witnessed it. It is only that the incident was mentioned in Quran and Prophet's Sunnah that made us believe other wise we Muslims of this era would have never believed in it. In addition that we know for sure that Allah is most capable of anything. At that point Dr. Zaghloul narrated the story of moon splitting as included in Sunnah books. He said, Sunnah books tell that five years before the immigration of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from Mecca to Medina, a group of people from the tribe of Quraish came challenging him saying: Oh Muhammad if you were really a Prophet and a Messenger bring to us a miracle to establish this fact. So he asked them what do you want? They said in an effort to complicate matters for him: split the moon for us. The Messenger of ALLAH (PBUH) stood supplicating to Allah to support him and grant him victory in this hard situation. Allah may He be Exalted inspired him to sign towards the moon with his finger. Immediately, the moon cleft into two parts standing far from each other for several hours then cling back together. The pagans started claiming: Oh Muhammad (PBUH) practiced witchcraft on us. At this point some of the wise men explained that magic would only affect the attendees whereas it can not maintain influence on everybody in general. They waited for travelers who were coming back from their journeys. The pagans harried up to the borders of Mecca in anticipation to meet the travelers. When the first arrivals appeared, they asked them did you see anything extraordinary happened to the moon? The travelers answered yes on the night (X) we saw the moon splitting into two parts which remained asunder for sometime then reattached. Upon this statement, a number of the group believed while the rest remained pagans. Therefore, the verse explains The Hour has drawn near, and the moon has been cleft asunder (the people of Makkah requested Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to show them a miracle, so he showed them the splitting of the moon). * And if they see a sign, they turn away, and say: This is continuous magic. *They belied the Verses of Allah - this Quran), and followed their own lusts. And every matter will be settled according to the kind of deeds: good deeds will take their doers to Paradise and similarly evil deeds will take their doers to Hell. (Quran 54:1-3) until the end of the verses which were revealed in this regard. Dr. Najjar continued that at this point a British Muslim young man introduced himself as Daoud Moussa Peetcock head of the British Islamic Party. He was telling them, it would have been more feasible to allocate this kind of money for reconstruction of earth.
