CJPME's mission is to empower Canadians to be effective advocates for justice 
and peace in the Middle East.  This past week, CJPME members met with Liberal 
MPs, Bloc Québécois MPs, NDP MPs, and representatives of the Conservative 
party.  Gaza needs everyone's help.

You can do it too!

recommendations for the Canadian government.  Each recommendation comes with 
supporting arguments and facts.

The Canadian Islamic Congress today called on the Canadian government,
including MPs of all parties, to issue the strongest possible
condemnation of the ongoing and rapidly escalating Israeli Holocaust
against native Palestinians.

Matan Vilnai, Israel's deputy defense minister, has tried to justify the
brutal reprisals inflicted by the Jewish state by insisting that it is
solely the Palestinians who are bringing a bigger shoah upon
themselves. (Shoah is the Hebrew word for the Holocaust, referring to
the Nazi extermination of Jews during World War Two.)

During this tragic week the bloodiest in years -- 2,000 Israeli army
personnel have been deployed by air and ground to inflict their
state-sanctioned Holocaust against Gaza. So far, 68 Palestinians there
have been killed among them, 28 women and 19 children, including a
two-day-old infant. Another 220, most of them civilians, have been wounded.

The CIC concluded todays statement by reiterating its call that Israel
must stop the growing Holocaust against native Palestinians and end its
four-decade occupation of the West Bank and Gaza.

the principles of international law. We reconfirm that the right of the 
Palestinian people to return to their homes and property and to receive full 
compensation for all damage done to their property as well as for all other 
losses associated with the violation of their rights by Zionist forces is both 
an inalienable individual and collective right.  Any Palestinian leadership 
that suggests that the inalienable Palestinian right of return can be

The United States may be tempted to use the present juncture to eliminate the Iranian nuclear option. Hopefully, Washington may begin to take notice of the growing international rage over the events in Lebanon and its sponsorship of the Israeli attack. It is, therefore,still more than likely, Israel will have to cut its losses in Lebanon and comfort its citizens with the information that Israeli cooperation with the United
States has reached an unprecedented level. After all, U.S. commitments, it will explain to its citizens, to help in the prisoner exchange, to get the Lebanese army to redeploy, and to declare the Hezbollah an international outlaw are almost as good as the real thing, or are they? In a recent opinion column, Ofer Eini, chairman of Israel's Histadrut General Federation of Labour Unions, challenged Canadian labour to assist Palestinians in developing "an authentic economy." He also acknowledged the important role trade unions play in international affairs. I was also pleased to hear
Eini call upon Canada's trade unionists to assist in forming a "brotherhood and sisterhood of workers involving Israeli and Palestinian workers." Unfortunately, in Israel and the Occupied Territories, not all workers feel they are being treated fairly or equally. A report by the Director General of the International Labour Office titled The Situation of Workers of the Occupied Arab Territories shows that 57 per cent of all wage earners in the Occupied Territories earned monthly salaries below the official poverty line. Eini calls upon Canadian labour to assist in developing an "authentic economy" for Palestinians. With all due respect, how does he envision this happening when Palestinians are prevented from having control
over their air space and prohibited from building airports or seaports so as to import raw materials or export finished goods? Palestinians in the West Bank are prohibited from visiting friends and relatives in Gaza and, by extension, they are prohibited from trading their goods and services with fellow citizens. Making matters worse, Israel has a blockade of Gaza providing only a few crossing points that are increasingly locked down completely. Agricultural produce sits in boxes rotting, while Israeli soldiers inflict collective punishment and humiliation on thousands of workers and farmers trying to get through checkpoints on a daily basis. In the West Bank, Israel has built a wall that cuts through some of the best Palestinian
farmland, destroying crops and orchards in the process. A series of checkpoints, roadblocks and the wall make it impossible to conduct commerce. If Eini is serious about setting up a climate of "brotherhood and sisterhood" in order to address some of the above-mentioned problems, then he will have an ally in CUPE Ontario. The drill is said to be a popular tool of torture with the Badr Brigade. But beheading is a hallmark of Al-Qaeda in Iraq, led by the Sunni Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. According to a report that was
circulating after Bahjats murder, she had enraged the Shiite militias during her coverage of the bombing of the Samarra shrine by filming the interior minister, Bayan Jabr, ordering police to release two Iranians they had arrested. There is no confirmation of this and the Badr Brigade, with which she maintained good relations, protected her family after her funeral came under attack in Baghdad from a bomber and then from a gunman. Three people died that day. Bahjats reporting of terrorist attacks and denunciations of violence to a wide audience across the Middle East made her plenty of enemies among both Shiite and Sunni gunmen. Death threats from Sunnis drove her away to Qatar for a spell but she believed her place was in Iraq and she returned to frontline reporting despite the risks. We may never know who killed Bahjat or why. But the manner of her death testifies to the breakdown of law, order and
justice that she so bravely highlighted and illustrates the importance of a cause she espoused with passion. Bahjat advocated the unity of Iraq and saw her golden locket as a symbol of her belief. She put it with her customary on-air eloquence on the last day of her life: Whether you are a Sunni, a Shiite or a Kurd, there is no difference between Iraqis united in fear for this nation. The world our kids live in is age inappropriate, but they have to live there. So do schools, libraries and authors.Kids that age today, and younger, are already living with war; they are war babies -- in the sense that they were barely coming to awareness on 9/11. Maybe their parents turned the
sound down and tried to shield them from those collapsing towers, but they saw the visuals, endlessly. They are more war babies than I was -- born in 1942 but not subjected to the media barrage of war images and news they saw, while they were learning to walk and talk. I know a seven-year-old who often says, Will I still be alive when the war in Iraq ends? He can't recall it not being there.I know a five-year-old who, given a choice of places to visit in London, chose the Imperial War Museum over the Eye. He related to it instinctively. Are you going to deny them a rare book that can engage their sense of war in an empathic, utterly age-appropriate way, given what being their age means?The CJC says the interviews "demonize both sides as murderous and irrational." Now it's true there is mutual demonization when kids on each side say that the others are bad, and that they want to fight or kill them. But the effect on
readers, I'd say, is the opposite -- because the words are quoted respectfully, in larger texts that include many normal kids' qualities along with hate and fear. When kids here read those phrases, coming from kids with whom they can otherwise identify, they realize not that both sides are demonic, but that they have tragically demonized each other. The honest presentation of a demonization that happens on both sides tends to undermine it. Both sides can't be demons. Demonization gets de-demonized.Or take a much-cited interview with the sister of a suicide bomber. It's just three pages, spare and expressive, with an intro that discusses suicide generally, then describes the bombings that have occurred. The girl talks mostly about her own life and despair and, at the end, tries to find some solace in her sister's end. It is the voice of a kid trying to make it through a hideous, confusing life, of which her sister's act is
another bewildering piece. There is no implied approval of the bombing, but a reader might begin to comprehend the despair and want to help alter the situation that produced it. For Canadian kids between 9 and 11 who have lived through so much senseless violence in the news, TV and video games, it gently starts to provide some context and understanding. Why would anyone want to take that away?The book takes no stand on politics in the region, yet something may come through. The Israeli kids take trips to the United States or South Africa, the Palestinians yearn to visit grandparents a few clicks away but can't, due to checkpoints. Israeli kids have no checkpoints, their homes aren't bulldozed, they are not, in other words, occupied. One is reminded of these things only incidentally. But by hearing about lives so different, one gets the sense of a power imbalance. Young readers won't lack empathy for the Israeli kids, who fear
death and die cruelly and unjustly, but there is a tendency for kids to sympathize with the underdog because, as kids, they're small in a world of those larger and more privileged than them (well, it's a theory). The CJC has never questioned the appropriateness of The Diary of Anne Frank or Hana's Suitcase in the schools, but, in those books, Jewish figures are clearly victims and entirely sympathetic. In Three Wishes, both sides are victims, but also victimizers; so questions of power and justice, though not raised, may arise.Yet, all a good book can do is help take kids into such a world, not tell them what to conclude about it. If conclusions were the purpose, you could skip the book and go straight to the manifesto. The purpose of a book is to enter into the experience of others, to be affected and altered by it. If it teaches anything, it's how to think about the world, not what to think about it.[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Gen. (ret.) Moshe Ya'alon into Canada. This despite the fact that he would be arrested for war crimes if he were to set foot in the UK and despite the fact that he is the target of an action accusing him of war crimes in the US.Yaalon was invited by a group named Aid for Israeli Veterans and he spoke at Beth Emeth Synagogue at 8:00 pm on March 22. Though dozens of policemen provided security for the Yaalon, he was met by around 50 protesters who held placards and banners accusing him of war crimes
 and genocide against Palestinians and Lebanese. The protesters also admonished the Canadian government for allowing a war criminal into the country and for not invoking the Crimes against Humanity and War Crimes Act 2000 to detain him after he entered Canada.Moshe Yaalon is guilty of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity, in his capacity as former Head of the Intelligence Branch of the Israeli military, on 18 April 1996 at Qana. Yaalon is also guilty of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity, in his capacity as Chief of Staff of Israeli military, on 22 July 2002 at Gaza City.Yaalon is responsible for the 1996 attack in Qana that caused the death of over a hundred villagers and the injury of many others, including Fijian soldiers assigned to the United Nations. With respect to his actions in Qana, Yaalon is facing a civil suit in the U.S. from persons directly or similarly affected from the attack and it is clear that the measures taken or
 approved by Yaalon in 1996 are in breach of international law as well as the terms of the War Crimes Act in Canada. Yaalon is also responsible for the 2002 attack in Gaza City where a one tonne bomb was dropped on a residential neighbourhood killing 14 civilians, most of them children. With respect to his actions in Gaza City in 2002, the Yesh Gvul movement submitted a brief on 30 September 2003 listing Moshe Yaalon as a war criminal for being one of four individuals responsible for the attack.  War Crimes Act leaves the decision to prosecute war criminals in the hands of politicians and not the courts, as is the case in the UK. On 20 October 2005, Desiree Munyaneza was the first person to be charged under the War Crimes Act. The charges relate to the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. He is mainly accused of leading attacks on Tutsis at the national University of Rwanda and south of the capital, Kigali.While Canadian politicians were quick to invoke the War Crimes Act against a mediocre Rwandan war criminal they will not invoke it against war criminals from countries that Canadian politicians view as strong allies. In effect then, the War Crimes Act guarantees immunity to Israeli and American war criminals who are the major human rights violators nowadays.IT IS

The Israeli Wall IS a burning international issue. According to Archbishop Desmond Tutu, no less so than South African Apartheid was. And no less so than global security is, as Canada and the USA's acceptance of the Wall is one crucial example of the Arab world's cause for anger with the West.The Israeli Ambassador lectures us that this is a "curious" time to raise the issue of the Wall because Canadian elections are taking place. This is precisely the
appropriate time. As letter writer Rula Odeh states, "With the election upon us, Canadians need to decide which party will have a just and moral position" in Canadian foreign policy. Does Paul Martin's comment "Israeli values are Canada's values"? reflect a just and moral position? Is the Israeli Wall an example of these Canadian values? Will a new Prime Minister Martin and Liberal government uphold the international court's ruling against the Wall? I don't think so. Is Baker afraid that a little truth about Israeli actions will cause Canadian voters to steer away from one of its key allies?Palestinians also deserve, "The right to life and to protection from [Israeli state-terrorism]." Instead, for example, in a two year period 30 newborns have "inconveniently" to
use Baker's words, died when Palestinian mothers in labour were not permitted to cross check-points and "the barrier". Israel will never voluntarily dismantle the Wall. No, the Wall reflects Israeli's unilateral decision regarding expanded Israeli borders and the construction of a miniscule Palestinian
"state". Expanding the Wall into what is left of historic Palestine; "giving back" the Gaza Strip while building more illegal settlements in the West Bank, is simply another step towards Zionism's goal of building Israel "from the Nile to the Euphrates".(By the way, despite the word's casual and propaganda usage, the proper definition of "terrorism" is "violence against civilians", and does not describe actions by militants against other militants/soldiers.) The Canadian Arab Federation (CAF) is a national, non-profit, umbrella organization serving Arabs in Canada. CAFs mandate is achieved through government and media relations, education and information sharing, and direct service provision.

CAF is currently seeking the skills of an experienced professional to oversee its project and communications functions. 

The Coordinator reports to the Executive Director.

Responsibilities

· Implements CAF projects through community outreach, volunteer management, research and analysis
· Builds alliances with community, media and government partners
· Assists in the coordination of annual events
· Implements communications strategy through proactive media relations, news releases and action alerts
· Maintains government, media and community databases
· Researches emerging issues as needed; creates backgrounders for stakeholders

Qualifications

· B.A. degree or equivalent experience 
· Demonstrated knowledge of the Canadian Arab community 
· Strong administrative, computer and organizational skills
· Understanding of the non profit sector
· Exceptional English communication skills, both written and verbal
· Experience in advocating through media and government

In Few Days the Israeli Occupation will start redeploying its forces withdrawing  from Gaza Strip to transfer it to the biggest prison in the World. But in the case of a suicide bomber, that's inappropriate for two reasons, say the guidelines. One, the shot may only wound the bomber.
 Two, the shot could hit and set off the explosive device.The guidelines from the International Association of Chiefs of Police, which has 20,000 members including about 300 in Canada, are the first from a major police body based in North America."Compared with other nations, such as Israel and Russia, the United States has been spared the horror of frequent suicide bombings," said an introduction to the guidelines. "However, depending on developments in the war on terrorism and related matters, this situation could change. Embedded cells of militants with international ties to terrorism, as well as domestic terrorists, pose the potential for suicide bombings and other attacks."Police chiefs are not required to adopt the guidelines. However, the release underscores a new awareness in North America of the threat of suicide attacks -- and raises the same questions that were raised in London last month after an
 innocent man was shot five times in the head.Jean Charles de Menezes, a Brazilian electrician whose student visa had run out, was killed in a subway station after armed plainclothes officers mistakenly pegged him for a suicide bomber. Mr. Menezes ran away when he was challenged by police, who then used Scotland Yard's controversial shoot-to-kill policy, which calls for five shots to the head.Sgt. Serge Robitaille, a spokesman for the RCMP training academy in Regina, said there is currently no suicide bomber component of police training for the RCMP.The Mounties use the "incident management and intervention model" which recommends the use of a continuum of force from speaking to suspects and moving around the scene to lethal force.If officers must shoot, they are advised to trike the "centre of mass" which stretches from the waist to the neck."You don't have the luxury of hitting a smaller target like a
 hand," said Sgt. Robitaille.However, if the suspect is wearing body armour or if shooting the centre of mass fails to stop the threat, an officer may aim for the head. Under the Criminal Code of Canada, officers must be able to justify the amount of force they use, added Sgt. Robitaille.John Thompson, a terrorism expert at the Mackenzie Institute in Toronto, said police officers in Canada already learn all the techniques they need to know "for the moment."Some specialist officers should know about how to shoot a suicide bomber, but it's not necessary that all police know the technique, he said. Aiming for the head in the case of a suicide bomber is not a difficult technique to teach an officer who is already trained."Police are already allowed to shoot to kill under specific circumstances," he said. "It's just a different threat."Contacted yesterday, Ottawa police Chief Vince Bevan said he not seen
 the guidelines. The Ottawa Police Service is part of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, but has received no new information and Ottawa's policy remained unchanged, he said."If you determine you have to shoot someone, either in defence of your life or in defence of others, we don't shoot to wound someone," he said.When asked if that meant to shoot to kill, Chief Bevan replied: "We shoot to disable the threat."He added that anything the International Association of Chiefs of Police said was not necessarily binding for the Ottawa police."It's not an edict they issue. They make policy suggestions," he said. "We're satisfied that the use of force policies that we have in place would apply to a situation such as that."Israeli security experts are acknowledged as the leaders in managing incidents involving suicide bombers. Often, these incidents are resolved without any injuries to anyone,

Trudeau/Torstar runner-ups;"TORONTO -- CBC Washington correspondent Neil Macdonald has been named winner of the 2004 DishonestReporting Canada Award by HonestReporting Canada (www.honestreporting.ca), a non-profit organization monitoring Canadas news media for fairness and accuracy in reporting. The award identifies media that HRCs members believe have failed to report fairly or accurately, or to abide by professional codes of conduct, when reporting on Israel and the Middle East. In 2004 Mr. Macdonald triggered on-air clarifications and an acknowledgement from CBCs Ombudsman that his reporting was open to the perception of bias, said Dov Smith, executive director of HonestReporting Canada. Our members felt he was in a league of his own when it came to winning this dubious award.** In a May 2004 report on CBCs The National, Macdonald included the comments of Eugene Bird, president of the anti-Israel group
Council for the National Interest, who falsely implied that Israeli intelligence agents were involved in the Abu Ghraib prison abuses in Iraq. ** In a December 2004 column on CBCs Web site, Macdonald asserted, If Palestinians have committed terror, the Israelis have certainly committed war crimes. [IslamCity] First Palestinian Picnic of the season a success, others planned.

Many thanks to the Palestinian community of Waterloo and Students for Palestinian Rights SFPR for the excellent Potluck Picnic they hosted May 21 !! Delicious food, excellent turn-out, super games for the kids, political and craft displays, georgeous weather, and especially good company !

Mississauga is planning a Palestinian BBQ and Picnic for June 19.

Ziyad of Hamilton is gathering the Hamilton Palestinians together to organize a Picnic for everyonethe first week of August.

And the Niagara Palestinian Association is hosting a Potluck Picnic in Niagara FallsSat August 27. All are welcome.

[IslamCity] CIVITAS Democracy and Rights are also for Palestinian Refugees

and political constraints. Active members of Palestinian refugee
communities have the responsibility to reach out to the different
sectors of their community so the debates can be as inclusive and
popular as possible. During the debates care is taken to ensure that
the
ideas and suggestions of the participants are noted down in detail and
are also recorded on audio and sometimes also video cassettes, so as to
guarantee that their voices and views are accurately recorded.

In Denmark meetings have been held in the different towns where there
are sizeable Palestinian refugee communities. Similarly, such meetings
have taken place throughout Sweden in the cities of Malmo, Uppsala and
Stockholm, and are set to take place in other towns in May. In Berlin,
and Frankfurt, Germany, where the largest Palestinian communities in
Europe is to be found, meetings have begun, and larger ones will take
place in the major towns this month and next. In Holland on Land Day, a
large public meeting was convened, and a series of smaller meetings
follow this month. In Athens and Thessalonika in Greece, in Barcelona,
Madrid, and the United Kingdom in the coming days, in Canada and
America
next month, Palestinians are finding ways to ensure Palestinians
everywhere can have the possibility to participate in the issues that
concern them, at the same time.

An extensive series of meetings have been held all over Lebanon..
Volunteer teams working on the project have organised meetings in the
key regions, ensuring participation of different sectors of the
Palestinian refugee community and a large attendance. The meetings
began
with public as well as syndicate meetings of workers, youth and
students, and women for the Tyre region: a public meeting in the
El-Rashidiyeh refugee camp was followed by a syndicate meetings in
Bourj
El Shamali, El-Rashidiyeh, and El-Bass refugee camp. An open public
meeting in Bourj El Barajneh refugee camp initiated syndicate meetings
that have taken place in the Beirut area, including Shatila and Mar
Elias. Additionally, an opening public meeting was held for the north
area of Tripoli, where more than 400 Palestinians from the refugee
camps
of Nahr El Bared, El-Baddawi, and the surrounding areas attended, many
arriving in buses in order to actively participate in the meeting which
lasted for several hours, and were followed that next week by syndicate
meetings.

Participation has been impressive and diverse, varying in attendance
from 20 up to 400 people, depending on the form of the meeting, the
size
of the community in the region in question, and the capacity of local
organizers to reach out to the community at large. Many of the new
generation are participating in the debates and expressing their
concerns, and in many areas these meetings are the first time they had
come together for many years, if at all. Suggestions and ideas brought
forth during the meetings so far have been creative and rich, both in
their content and their quantity. Ideas range from enhancing existing
civic structures; practical issues such as obtaining Palestinian I.D.
papers for local refugee communities in Europe as a way to both prove
and protect Palestinian identity; twinning programs and
network-building
between Palestinian refugee communities around the world; radio
stations
and web-sites; maintaining and updating registration with UNRWA if they
are currently residing outside UNRWA mandate areas; organizing
delegations and committees to voice concerns with all relevant bodies:
the PLO, international humanitarian agencies such as UNRWA and the
UNHCR. The refugees express the view that improving their political,
economic, social and legal conditions will empower them, give them
better chances to participate effectively in decisions relating to
their
future, and will help them better argue for, and obtain, their rights.
More ideas and recommendations are coming in daily as the debates
unfold.

Most encouraging for the Palestinian refugees, isolated and ignored by
the international community, is that they are learning about other
refugee communities across the world. There is a common hunger to learn
about the situation of Palestinians everywhere, from Iraq to Chile, to
el Bass, to Sweden, about which they now know little. They are
discovering common concerns, common quests, common hopes and dreams.
Young Palestinians all over the world are learning about their common
history and the present reality of Palestinian refugees, forging new
friends and alliances, and taking forward this cause into the coming
years. This is our strength and our hope.

We are happy to announce the date for our Annual Palestinian and Friends of Palestinians Potluck Picnic and BBQ - Saturday, August 27, 2005.

Please plan to attend and bring your friends and famillies.

Last year we had 400 people attend. It was an excellent occassion to meet old friends and make new.

This year we have booked the entire Pavillon to ourselves (last year we shared it with a few other groups.)

Also this year we will again provide the BBQ chicken (halal), water, bread etc. and ask that you bring a dish to share - mahglouba, koussa, warag dawali, hummous, mjadarah

We will have a committee organizing Children's Games (it was a little too much for Belal all by himself to organize last year), so if you would like to be part of the Children's Games Committee please let us know.

In the resulting confrontations with Israeli police, six Palestinians were killed, hundreds wounded, and one thousand jailed.In the intervening years, those events have become consecrated in the Palestinian memory as Land Day.The Jewish National Fund (JNF) is a Zionist organization established in 1901 to redeem the land of Israel i.e, to takeover the lands owned by the indigenous Palestinian population and to allocate it to the sole use of the Jewish people. [IslamCity] Dr Sahin

Dr Fuad Sahin who we all love and respect, who is such a good man, who has done so much for the community and as Imam of the Niagara Falls mosque, is not well. He had heart surgery last month and is now in Shaver Hospital in St Catharines. We wish him a speedy recovery.
