Shoe thrown at Israeli Ambassador in Sweden and hits dead on! A shoe was thrown at Israel ’s ambassador to Sweden, Mr. Benny Dagan, when he was giving a speech at Stockholm University on Thursday. It was followed by two books and a note pad, all hitting the severely embarrassed ambassador. The two protesters, a young woman and a young man, shouted “Murderers!” and “Intifada!” while pelting Dagan with the objects. They are currently under arrest, suspected of assault and public disturbance. The lecture was organized by the Foreign policy association at Stockholm University . The ambassador was supposed to talk about the upcoming elections in Israel , but turned quickly to issues of Hamas and Iran and developed a lengthy defence for Israel ’s recent actions in the GazaStrip. Some 20 minutes into the lecture, a woman stood up in the audience, threw a red shoe at the ambassador and shouted “Murderers!” The shoe hit Dagan in his stomach. Another protester then joined in and hurled two books and a note pad. Dagan was dumbstruck and paralyzed, but returned to his lecture shortly after a few minutes – only to face shouts and other verbal protests from the audience. The meeting ended in chaos, while the two protestors were taken to custody. The boycott movement in Sweden has gained momentum during the last weeks, not the least since Veolia lost its Stockholm metro contract, worth some 3.5 billion euro a year, after a long campaign against the company’s notorious involvement in the Jerusalem tram project. Even the Europeans have come to understand the value and honour of the shoe thrown in the face of cowardly animals such as these. Showing the sole of your shoe has long been an insult in Arab culture To hit someone with that shoe – as Muntadar al-Zeidi (pictured) tried with President George W Bush – is seen as even worse. The shoe is considered dirty because it is on the ground and associated with the foot, the lowest part of the body. Shoes are often used to attack the American flag and to lash out at photographs of Mr Bush by those protesting against American foreign policy. As an insult to President George Bush Sr. after the first Gulf war, a mosaic of his face was laid on the floor of the Al-Rashid Hotel in Baghdad . Anyone who entered the lobby would have to walk over his face to get into the hotel. Compounding the shoe insult was Mr Zeidi’s likening of the US president to a dog. Why Islam? >From Dr. Laurence B. Brown to all seekers of truth Let's talk frankly. Almost never do non-Muslims study Islam until they have first exhausted the religions of their exposure. Only after they have grown dissatisfied with the religions familiar to them, meaning Judaism, Christianity and all the fashionable "-isms" - Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism (and, as my young daughter once added, "tourism") - do they consider Islam. Perhaps other religions do not answer the big questions of life, such as "Who made us?" and "Why are we here?" Perhaps other religions do not reconcile the injustices of life with a fair and just Creator. Perhaps we find hypocrisy in the clergy, untenable tenets of faith in the canon, or corruption in the scripture. Whatever the reason, we perceive shortcomings in the religions of our exposure, and look elsewhere. And the ultimate "elsewhere" is Islam. Now, Muslims would not like to hear me say that Islam is the "ultimate elsewhere." But it is. Despite the fact that Muslims comprise one-fourth to one-fifth of the world's population, non-Muslim media smears Islam with such horrible slanders that few non-Muslims view the religion in a positive light. Hence, it is normally the last religion seekers investigate. Another problem is that by the time non-Muslims examine Islam, other religions have typically heightened their skepticism: If every "God-given" scripture we have ever seen is corrupt, how can the Islamic scripture be different? If charlatans have manipulated religions to suit their desires, how can we imagine the same not to have happened with Islam? The answer can be given in a few lines, but takes books to explain. The short answer is this: There is a God. He is fair and just, and He wants us to achieve the reward of paradise. However, God has placed us in this worldly life as a test, to weed out the worthy from the unworthy. And we will be lost if left to our own devices. Why? Because we don't know what He wants from us. We can't navigate the twists and turns of this life without His guidance, and hence, He has given us guidance in the form of revelation. Sure, previous religions have been corrupted, and that is why we have a chain of revelation. Ask yourself: why would God send another revelation if the preceding scriptures were still pure? Only if preceding scriptures were corrupted would God need to send another revelation, to keep mankind on the straight path of His design. So we should expect preceding scriptures to be corrupted, and we should expect the final revelation to be pure and unadulterated. If impure, it too is due to be replaced, for we cannot imagine a loving God leaving us astray. What we can imagine is God giving us a scripture, and men corrupting it; God giving us another scripture, and men corrupting it again … and again, and again. Until God sends a final revelation He promises to preserve until the end of time. Muslims consider this final revelation to be the Holy Qur'an. You consider it … worth looking into. So let us return to the title of this article: Why Islam? Why should we believe that Islam is the religion of rruth, the religion that possesses the pure and final revelation? Oh, just trust me. Now, how many times have you heard that line? A famous comedian used to joke that people of different cities cuss one another out in different ways. In Chicago, they cuss a person out this way, in Los Angeles they cuss a person out that way, but in New York they just say, "Trust me." So don't trust me - trust our Creator. Read the Qur'an; read books and study this website. But whatever you do, get started, take it seriously, and pray for our Creator to guide you. If any Muslim supplicates in these words,
his supplication will be accepted.”
In another report Rasulullah (Sallallaho alaihe wasallam) had said,
“I know words that will cause Allah Azza wa Jall to remove one’s distress.
These are the words (of supplication) of my brother Yunus, peace be upon him,”

B i s m i l l a a h i r R a h m a a n i r R a h e e m As Salaamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullaahi Wa Barkaatuh! Virtues of Muharram By Sheikh Saleh Al-Munajjid Muharram – The first month of the Hijra calendar – is one of the four sacred months about which Allah said: "Verily, the number of months with Allah is 12 months (in a year), so it was ordained by Allah on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth; of them, four are sacred. That is the right religion, so wrong not yourselves therein…" (Qur'an, 9:36) The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The year is 12 months of which four are sacred, the three consecutive months of Dhu'l-Qa'dah, Dhu'l-Hijjah and Muharram, and Rajab which comes between Jumada and Sha'ban." (Al-Bukhari, 2958) It was reported that Ibn 'Abbas said that this phrase "so wrong not yourselves therein…" referred to all the months, then these four were singled out and made sacred, so that sin in these months is more serious and good deeds bring a greater reward. Voluntary fasting The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "The best of fasting after Ramadan is fasting Allah's month of Muharram." (Sahih Muslim) This Hadith is probably meant to encourage fasting during Muharram, without meaning that one should fast for the entire month. Fasting on 'Ashoora' Ibn Abbas said: "The Prophet (peace be upon him) came to Madina and saw the Jews fasting on the day of 'Ashoora'. When he asked them about it, they said, 'This is a blessed day, it is the day when Allah saved the Children of Israel from their enemies, so Musa (peace be upon him) fasted on this day.' The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, 'We have more right to Musa (peace be upon him) than you,' so he fasted on that day and commanded (the Muslims) to fast on that day." (Al-Bukhari) Fasting on the day of 'Ashoora was earlier obligatory, but when fasting Ramadan was made obligatory, the obligation to fast 'Ashoora was cancelled, i.e., it was no longer obligatory to fast on this day, but it is still recommended. Virtues of fasting 'Ashoora' The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "For fasting the day of 'Ashoora, I hope that Allah will accept it as expiation for the year that went before." (Sahih Muslim) This is from the bounty of Allah towards us. By fasting one day, He expiates our sins for the whole year. And Allah is the Owner of Great Bounty. Fasting the ninth and tenth Abdullah Ibn Abbas said: "When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) fasted on 'Ashoora and commanded the Muslims to fast as well, they said, 'O Messenger of Allah, it is a day that is venerated by the Jews and Christians.' The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, 'If I live to see the next year, Insha Allah, we will fast on the ninth day too.' But it so happened that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) passed away before the next year came." (Sahih Muslim) Al-Shafi'i and his companions, Ahmad, Ishaq and others said: "It is Mustahab (recommended) to fast on both days, ninth and tenth, because the Prophet (peace be upon him) fasted on the tenth, and intended to fast on the ninth." Grant me that I should be grateful for Thy favor which Thou hast bestowed on me and on my parents, and that I should do good such as Thou art pleased with, and make me enter, by Thy mercy, into Thy servants, the good ones. SFDA finds melamine in Nestle milk Fatima Sidiya | Arab News JEDDAH: More than two months after the Saudi Food and Drugs Authority (SFDA) called on the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to ensure that no Chinese-manufactured milk products were being sold in the Kingdom, the SFDA issued a consumer alert yesterday on the presence of the industrial chemical melamine in milk powder made by a Nestle plant in China and Apollo Chocolate Wafer Cream snack bars. And, sure enough, store shelves in Jeddah were stocked with the product that the SFDA named yesterday: Nestle’s Nesvita Pro Bone Protection high calcium milk (specific samples produced in China on different dates in 2007 and 2008) and Apollo Chocolate Cream-Filled Wafer bars, made by Malaysia’s Apollo Food Industries. “The SFDA found five samples from all the samples tested (contaminated with melamine),” said a statement on the SFDA website. The SFDA claims it found the melamine during a random sampling of 52 products containing powdered milk. Nestle was quick to issue a statement yesterday claiming that none of its milk products contain melamine and that all of its products sold in Saudi Arabia and elsewhere in the world meet World Health Organization standards. Melamine is an industrial compound found in plastics that has been used by unscrupulous manufacturers in China to fool government protein content tests. Melamine, which has been shown to cause kidney stones or kidney failure, especially among infants, is added to the milk in order to lower costs, cheat nutr ition tests and pass powdered milk products onto the world market that have lower-than-acceptable levels of protein. In September, SFDA Executive President Mohammed Al-Kenhal said: “We have contacted the ministry to take necessary measures to make sure that the Kingdom’s markets are free of Chinese milk.” The Ministry of Commerce and Industry confirmed that Saudi Arabia was not importing any milk products from China . Saudi Warns Expats Against Heading for Haj Without Permits Jeddah, October 19: Expatriate workers heading for annual pilgrimage without Haj permits will be deported, according to Makkah Governor Prince Khaled Al Faisal. He said teams of security officers would be deployed in Makkah and other holy sites to look for pilgrims who do not possess Haj permits, and added that such illegal pilgrims would be slapped with deterrent fines. “They may also be subjected to other punishments, deemed essential by higher authorities, including deportation,” the Saudi Press Agency quoted the governor as saying. Prince Khaled called on Saudi sponsors and employers to instruct their workers intending to perform Haj to follow regulations and get Haj permits. Thousands of Saudis and expatriates perform Haj every year without obtaining a Haj permit and without contracting with Haj service agents. They sleep in public places, especially in the pedestrian path between Mina and Muzdalifah and around the stoning area of Jamarat in Mina. A concerted awareness campaign would be carried out through the media to enlighten Saudis and expatriates on the importance of obtaining Haj permits and following government instructions to ensure smooth operation of the Haj. “The kingdom will not allow from this year anybody who violates Haj regulations to enter the holy sites,” the governor said, and urged Saudi and foreign pilgrims to follow the government’s instructions that are aimed at protecting their safety and security. “Abiding by these instructions will have positive impact on the whole Haj operation,” he added. Prince Khaled, who is chairman of the Central Haj Committee, said government departments and private agencies have expedited preparations for the Haj beginning on December 6. He warned that tough measures would be taken against those who transport illegal pilgrims to the holy sites. “The punishment for such violations will include imposing deterrent fines and impounding and confiscation of vehicles. Drivers will also be asked to pay back the money to the passengers and also pay the fare to transport them in licenced vehicles,” he said. Expatriates committing such violations would be deported. He said private Haj companies and agencies providing pilgrim services have been instructed to accommodate maximum number of pilgrims at reasonable charges. “They have to transport their pilgrims in licenced vehicles to Makkah and other holy sites. “This system will help a large number of pilgrims perform Haj without violating regulations,” the prince said, and added that the ministry of transport has been instructed to supply adequate number of buses to transport pilgrims. Last year Saudi authorities deployed more than 7,000 security forces in Mina to ensure the smooth flow of pilgrims and prevent their squatting in public places. According to one senior Haj official, the new law allowing pilgrims to perform Umrah all year-round was one of the main reasons for an increase in overstayers and illegal squatters during Haj. My parents left for our native place on Thursday and we went to the airport to see them off. In fact, my father had never traveled by air before, so I just took this opportunity to make him experience the same. In spite of being asked to book tickets by train, I got them tickets on Jet Airways. The moment I handed over the tickets to him, he was surprised to see that I had booked them by air. The excitement was very apparent on his face, waiting for the time of travel. Just like a school boy, he was preparing himself on that day and we all went to the airport, right from using the trolley for his luggage, the baggage check-in and asking for window seat and waiting restlessly for the security check-in to happen. He was thoroughly enjoying himself and I, too, was overcome with joy watching him experience all these things. As they were about to go in for the security check-in, he walked up to me with tears in his eyes and thanked me. He became very emotional and it ! was not as if I had done something great but the fact that this meant a great deal to him. When he said thanks, I told him there was no need to thank me. But later, thinking about the entire incident, I looked back at my life. As a child how many dreams our parents have made come true. Without understanding the financial situation, we ask for cricket bats, dresses, toys, outings, etc. Irrespective of their affordability, they have catered to all our needs. Did we ever think about the sacrifices they had to make to accommodate many of our wishes? Did we ever say thanks for all that they have done for us? Same way, today when it comes to our children, we always think that we should put them in a good school. Regardless of the amount of donation, we will ensure that we will have to give the child the best, theme parks, toys, etc. But we tend to forget that our parents have sacrificed a lot for our sake to see us happy, so it is our responsibility to ensure that their dreams are realized and what they failed to see when they were young, it is our responsibility to ensure that they experience all those and their life is complete. Many times, when my parents had asked me some questions, I have actually answered back without patience. When my daughter asks me something, I have been very polite in answering. Now I realize how they would have felt at those moments. Let us realize that old age is a second childhood and just as we take care of our children, the same attention and same care need to be given to our parents and elders. Rather than my dad saying thank you to me, I would want to say sorry for making him wait so long for this small dream. I do realize how much he has sacrificed for my sake and I will do my best to give the best possible attention to all their wishes. Just because they are old does not mean that they will have to give up everything and keep sacrificing for their grandchildren also. They have wishes, too. Take care of ur parents. JEDDAH: Work on the first phase of an SR20 billion Makkah monorail project will
start in December soon after the Haj season to facilitate transportation of
pilgrims between the holy sites of Makkah, Mina, Arafat and Muzdalifa. The
project is designed to transport five million pilgrims.
“An agreement will be signed with the winner of the contract to implement the
project soon after Haj,” said Dr. Habeeb Zain Al-Abidine, deputy minister of
municipal and rural affairs and secretary-general of the Commission for
Development of Makkah, Madinah and the Holy Sites. Five specialized
international companies, which were short-listed from 10, are competing for the
multibillion dollar project, he said, adding that a meeting chaired by Prince

Zain Al-Abidine said a feasibility study conducted by an international company
had proposed five monorails linking the holy sites. Custodian of the Two Holy
Mosques King Abdullah has given his approval to the project that will ease
transportation of more than three million pilgrims between the holy sites.
“The feasibility study suggested the second monorail be built two to three
years after the construction of the first one,” he said, adding that a single
monorail would cost SR4 billion. The first monorail beginning from Mina will
transport nearly one million pilgrims including 360,000 Arab pilgrims.
Monorail, which is a single rail serving as the track for a wheeled or
(magnetically) levitating vehicle, has been rapidly paving its way as a modern
urban transit system, providing the most-sought-after transportation solutions
for a built-up congested city. The Makkah monorails will be 8 to 10 meters
above the ground to ensure smooth flow of pedestrians and vehicles.
Zain Al-Abidine said the implementation of the project in the holy sites would
help withdraw 25,000 buses from a total of 70,000 used by domestic pilgrims as
well as pilgrims who come by land from neighboring countries. He said the
system would help transport at least 500,000 pilgrims within six to eight hours.
According to the present study, monorails will have a station west of the
stoning area in Mina in order to transport pilgrims to the second and fourth
levels of the high-tech Jamrat Bridge .

NO MORE VISA BAN NO MORE stamping the six-month re-entry ban AMIR SOHRAB Wed, 09 Jul 2008 01:08:16 -0700 *Interior Ministry lifts 6-month re-entry ban* The Ministry of Interior has announced that effective 21 August, it will stop stamping the six-month re-entry ban on the passports of expatriate workers in the private sector whose residence visas have been cancelled. As a result, expatriate workers whose residence visas had been cancelled can now re-enter the UAE on any type of visa, other than employment. Moreover, a source from the labor ministry confirmed that with the lifting of the ban, the 'No Objection Certificate' (NOC) would no longer be required for expatriate workers seeking a job transfer. The approval of the old sponsor would be in the form of affixing his signature on the sponsorship transfer application form, which would also bear the signature of the new sponsor. Expatriate employees welcomed the new policy for providing them freedom to change jobs. Employers, however, also want appropriate checks and balances to be in place to prevent anyone from taking undue advantage of the situation. *UAE citizenship for highly-skilled professionals * Labor Minister Dr. Ali bin Abdullah Al Kaabi recently proposed the granting of UAE citizenship to a select category of highly qualified and skilled professionals who have the potential to contribute to national development. According to the minister, such a move would allow the country to benefit from the expertise of these professionals. *Interior Ministry introduces new 90-day mission entry visa* Interior Minister Lt. Gen, Shaikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan has decreed the introduction of a new 90-day entry visa. The new three-month visa called, the Mission Entry Visa, will be issued to expatriate workers hired for short-term special projects for an initial fee of Dh600. This new visa can be renewed for another three months for a fee of Dh1,200. The Mission Entry Visa can be issued to engineers, doctors, lawyers and technicians to carry out an urgent or emergency assignment for a licensed company or a public or private institution duly registered in the UAE. The spouse and children can accompany the visa holder. The new visa was allegedly designed to simplify the recruitment process for the employment of select foreign temporary workers and, at the same time, put an end to the abuse of the visit visa for employment purposes. *Category A companies predominate * The classification of companies based on the percentage of their work force belonging to the same nationality is as follows: firms with 30 percent or less are under category A, while those with 31 to 74 percent are under category B and those listed as category C are firms with over 75 percent of staff having the same nationality. According to the Labor Ministry, out of some 440,000 companies registered in the UAE, 359,000 are or 81.8 percent in category A; 36,000 are in category B; and 44,000 are in category C. In terms of number of workers, category A companies employ about 18 per cent or 450,000 out of 2.5 million expatriate workers in the country. However, a senior ministry official cautioned that the data could be deceiving since many of the companies in category A have either closed down or actually employ fewer than four workers, thus exempting them from the mixed-nationality and emiratization requirements. *Construction firms strive to diversify workforce* Assistant undersecretary for labor Humaid bin Dimas clarified that even if the construction industry were not subject to the emiratization quota, the Labor Ministry would nevertheless recognize the companies' initiatives to meet the two percent annual quota imposed on commercial companies with 50 or more workers. Hence, construction companies, which rely heavily on thousands of foreign laborers, have a chance to be upgraded from category B or C to category A if they meet the stipulated criteria, as well as the emiratization quota and diversification of culture requirements. This has prompted a number of companies to start diversifying the nationalities of their laborers to conform to the prescribed culture balance. *Visa violations by foreign workers* The Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs allegedly found 579 cases of visa violations among foreign workers employed in various private companies during the first eight months of the year. Of this number, 287 were on visit visas, 122 on domestic worker visas and 170 on parental visas.
