I'm ok to reduce the thread number as long as it could still reproduces the issue. And it seems there's some typo since 1024 to 1024 means no change? TestHRegion will peg all CPU cores in any recent history [~apurtell], I think the problem is TestHRegion#testWritesWhileRollWriter , the UT start 1024 extra threads to do Put operations concurrently. [~carp84], Could we reduce the thread size to save CPU core when testting locally ? [~Apache9], If implement the function with one step(scan backward) , then the implementation would be similar to reverse scan which was not implemented yet (Maybe a lot of work was needed for reverse scan at that time), so we provided the method getClosestRowBefore to locate the region in hbase:meta, I guess. For compatibility, we should keep getClosestRowBefore in branch-1.x & master branch at server side, so we should fix the bug at server side. There are two way to fix the bug, In my opinion: 1.Just implement getClosestRowBefore by reverse scan at server side. 2.Still two steps, but we get the readpoint firstly, and then pass the readpoint in both getting rowkey step and getting row step. We have getClosestRowBefore because we did not have a reverse Scan. We have to reverse Scan as part of 'normal' operation because we made a mistake doing the schema for hbase;meta*. * hbase:meta is made with keys that are the regioninfo serialized. The regioninfo name includes the startrow of the region so in hbase:meta keys are sorted first by table and then by region startkeys. Scans run in the sort direction which means when looking for the region that hosts a key we scan hbase:meta and have to keep going until we hit a key that is greater than the one we are looking for. This key will be in a region-too-far; i.e. the start row of region that follows the one we want. So, the Scan has gone to far and we need to back up to find the region that hosts the key we are looking for. If the hbase:meta were made of keys that had table name and region end key, then when we found a key that was beyond the one we were looking for, the Scan would be in the region hosting that wanted key; no need to back up. We should have been smarter and realized our mistake sooner. If following steps are met , then we'll get a NONE key-value returned. 1. Thread-1 get a new mvcc.writeNumber ; 2. Thread-1 apply put to memstore ; 3. Thread-2 try to get the closest row key, and the closest rowkey we get is the rowkey we put in step-2 ;# This is the key. 4. Thread-2 use the row key to get the final value. Thread-2 cannot see the value because Thread-1 does not commit the transaction yet. So we get a NONE key-value return. 5. I used to think that in 1.x we use reverse scan to implement getClosestRowBefore, but seems it goes into a completely different path. [~openinx] I do not fully understand your comments but I think the problem is what you have pointed out, we implement getClosestRowBefore with 2 steps 1. Get the closest row key. 2. Use this row key to get the final result. Yeah we do not record any mvcc value here so it is possible that we delete the row between step 1 and step 2 so you get a strange empty result. But I do not think this problem is 1.3 only? Do you only observe this problem in 1.3.x [~timoha]? Gist code your provided almost always tested failed (for better testing, I upload a unit test), and after the check, I think the problem is: the HRegion.getClosestRowBefore() method search the closest existed rowKey without mvcc readpoint , but search the value by a scan with the current mvcc readpoint & found rowKey.
