I switched on my PC this evening after getting back from work, and was asked
to activate my copies of JAWS and MAGic. I have had this software on my
computer for months and activated it as soon as I got it.

The only clue I have at the moment is that the beta 2 version of Windows
Defender expired on 31 December. This may account for the program not
working. It is a shame that the Windows Update did not flag this up.
Might be worth doing another update in a few days' time.
