[JAWS-Users] Re: what is the system tray

2007-01-21 Thread Robert S. Batchelor

I myself think it is rather sad that people don't know the basic names or
functions of their own computer system for whatever reason. Even worse they
don't take a minute or two to try and do BASIC research on their own to at
least find out before resorting to information boards like this.

This board is here to deal with a piece of software that is added to a
computer and answer questions pertaining to the functionality of that
software and how it interacts with other software on your computer.

In this modern day of information, technology and the internet it is so much
easier to have access to information than ever before. The problem is people
develop habits that tend to make them lazy. The tendency to being spoon fed
instead of searching or looking up for ones self becomes the rule of thumb
instead of the occasional aide when you get stuck and need assistance being
pointed in the right direction.

People that want to drive a car take drivers education, read the manual of
the car to at least to get a basic understanding of how it operates and then
gets someone to sit next to them while they drive (learners permit) for a
sense of reassurance just in case and then finally given a road test and a
written test to ensure they have learned the laws of the road and where the
car jack is located in case they have a flat. For those that have a flat
there is an Owners manual to reference how to change the tire in case it
is your first time doing so.

While operating a car, much like a computer, there are certain rules or laws
one needs to know before going unassisted. I am sure knowledgeable people
like Walt and others here didn't get to the point of their vast knowledge by
osmosis or being spoon fed!

Take a little responsibility for yourself and do the homework/search
yourself and know this place is here as a support and backup when needed.

This post is my opinion and not the owners of this board.

Good post Ray, where did you get it? I'm figuring from some manual or

anything like this on my web site as of yet. I have had memory lapses in

Ray Boyce's post and follow up post concerning the taskbar shows the fruits

Search for the tips and tricks section of the board's web page?

Yes I expect some to smack me around a bit for my post. But I think it
needed being said. Maybe some do not know how to go about a basic search on
the internet either. shrug

This is an absolute violation of the guide lines and as such I have
reluctantly taken action in this matter. We have all been beginners at one
time or another ourselves. I sure didn't hit the ground running back in
1989 when I first touched a computer, and believe me folks I went to a
computer school that had an extremely oppressive environment where the
instructors would rather yell at a student then help them out with a
problem. I created this list on the premise that anybody could ask any
question relating to the topic of this list without having to be afraid of
what another list member would say. Yes of course the hope is that all will
gain the confidence to try things on their own and when they get stuck the
list will be here to help out. The thing is there are over 200 members on
here and everybody is at a different skill level than everybody else. My
wife was on another list and she asked a question on there only to receive
an abusive answer from another list member, well I couldn't do anything
about that list but I sure can do something here. So this group will
continue to run the way it has where everybody can feel safe to ask a
question without worrying about reprisal, because I believe it is worth
doing.

I've done a little surgery this morning, as a result I've numbered each item
under the various headings like the programs page is currently setup. That
way if you're accustomed to the count under any given heading and you
suddenly see a higher number than what was there the last time then
obviously you'll know that something has been added.

[JAWS-Users] Money Talks

2007-01-21 Thread Kerryann Ifill
Hi everyone,

I get so busy, that I by the time I read a post asking a question I can help
with, its usually been answered by somebody else. It means that when I do
write to this list therefore, I'm always asking and not giving. I've
decided to change that this morning.
A few weeks ago I wrote asking about financial software and a very nice
person on the list quite willing shared a spreadsheet with me which has been
very useful.
I have however bee reviewing a demo copy of Money talks by American Printing
House for the Blind and felt I should write the list and say that as
financial programmes accessible any the blind goes, it isn't half bad!
I Mean, its not going to do your taxes or even help you plan or maintain
your budget, but for keeping track of your income and expenses while being
totally accessible it can't be matches.
With a little ingenuity, it has been able to monitor to credit card expenses
as well and I'm feeling very pleased about that.
So if you're in the market for something a little less labour intensive than
quicken and you're not too in-tune with excel, give this one a try!

I just wanted to say that I've often seen a few posts on this list which I
felt were a little tough on the questioner and I was worried to contribute
even when I have the time for fear that my responses came up less than
stellar.
Its important that everyone can contribute equally and feel that their

[JAWS-Users] Re: important information regarding email messages and IE 7

2007-01-21 Thread Ray Boyce

Hi
Spam and Phishing

Remember in the introduction we said that it has been reported that there is
about 171 billion e-mails sent per day?
A report
issued by
MessageLabs.com
in November 2006 states that 74% of all e-mail is spam, that one in 137.5
e-mails contain a malware of some sort, and that one in 200 e-mails is a
phishing
attempt. That's right ... the majority of e-mail that is sent per day is
useless unwanted trash that constantly fills our inbox. For those who do not
understand
what this means let me define each of these terms.
Definition list of 3 items
Spam = A spam e-mail is basically unwanted and unsolicited e-mail. There are
companies whose entire business model is to send out unsolicited e-mail and
flood your Inbox with trash. Spammers tend to get your email addresses by
either stealing or buying contact lists, when you sign up with a service
that
sells your information, or when someone is infected with malware and has
your email address in their address book. The best way to avoid spam is to
make
sure you read the privacy policy of any site you enter your email address
into. Also it is important to never publicly post your email address as
there
are programs that scan the Internet for email addresses posted publicly.

Malware e-mail = If an e-mail contains malware it contains a small program
that if you execute it, will infect your computer with a virus, worm,
Trojan,
backdoor, or spyware. These programs can cause loss of data and loss of
personal information such as your online banking information. It goes
without saying
that you definitely do not want any of these programs running on your
computer. Your best way to avoid getting infected from these emails is to
not open
anything from someone that you do not know or trust.

Phishing Attempt = A phishing attempt is when you receive an e-mail that is
written and formatted in such a way as to trick you into thinking they are a
legitimate company. They typically masquerade as e-mails from legitimate
companies such as a financial institutions and contain links back to sites
that
look real. The reality, though, is these sites and e-mails are all fake and
are simply being used to try and steal your information so that they can
attempt
an Identity Theft with your information. With that said, it is advised that
you never provide information such as your date of birth, social security
number,
or other personal information at site that you arrived at from a link in an
e-mail.
list end

To combat spam, malware, and phishing attempts it is advised that you use
have installed and updated on your computer the following:
List of 3 items
. Anti-Spyware Product such as
Spybot - Search Destroy,
Lavasoft Ad-Aware,
or Webroot Spysweeper
. An anti-virus product that you keep updated!
. Internet Explorer with the Phishing Filter enabled or Mozilla Firefox with
its filter enabled. Instructions on how to turn these on can be found below.
list end

I also advise that you read and follow the advice in this tutorial:
Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet

How to enable the Phishing Filter in Internet Explorer 7:
List of 7 items
1. Open Internet Explorer

2. Click on Tools and then select Internet Options.

3. Click on the Security tab.

4. Click on the Custom Level button.

5. Scroll down to the Miscellaneous category and look for Use Phishing
Filter underneath it.

6. Select Enable.

7. Press the OK button. Then press the Apply and OK button again.
list end

How to enable the Phishing Filter in Mozilla Firefox:
List of 6 items
1. Open Firefox

2. Click on the Tools menu and select Options.

3. Click on the Security option category.

4. Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Tell me if the site I'm visiting
is a suspected forgery

5. Select the option labeled Check by asking Google about each site I visit.

6. Press the OK button.

This is from Ray, I just hope he's not giving a test later on or I'll
 have
to study up on what parts of this I don't already know. Still folks it's
 a
very interesting read to say the least.

David,
Boy I feel better now after reading this message.
Some times a person, might know how to do something but is not to sure if he
should do it or not.
This way after asking a question might put that person in the right fame of
mind.

This is an absolute violation of the guide lines and as such I have
reluctantly taken action in this matter. We have all been beginners at
 one
time or another ourselves.
Yes of course the hope is that all
 will
gain the confidence to try things on their own and when they get stuck the
list will be here to help out. The thing is there are over 200 members on
here and everybody is at a different skill level than everybody else. My
wife was on another list and she asked a question on there only to receive
an abusive answer from another list member, well I couldn't do anything
about that list but I sure can do something here. So this group will
continue to run the way it has where everybody can feel safe to ask a
question without worrying about reprisal, because I believe it is worth
 doing.

Hi Rick,
No I haven't checked my verbosity settings for internet explorer. I haven't
checked them yet because I don't know what the correct settings are, so I
wouldn't know if mine are set right. Take care,
Lisa

 Hi Lisa,
I didn't have any problems with Jaws6.2 on this site.
 Using WinXP home.
Have you tried unloading, and re-loading Jaws?
Have you checked your verbosity settingsfor Internet Explorer?

 Hello list,
I am having a difficult time reading this web page with jaws. This is a
billboard count down page listing the currant top 50 songs. When I try to
read this page my jaws becomes so slow that when I arrow down it doesn't
speak. My son who is sighted can view this page with no problem. Below I
have pasted the link to this page so that you all can check it out. I
would
like to know if anyone else using jaws can view this page with no
problems.
After viewing this page I hope someone can help me figure out this
problem.
I would really like to be able to read this page. I am running jaws 6,
and
I have windows XP home. Your help with this would really be appreciated!
 Here is the link,

[JAWS-Users] Re: a Deleting question

2007-01-21 Thread John Justice

Are you viewing them in the In Box?

If so, that's very unusual. This may help though. If you are in another
folder such as Deleted Items, that ringing tone happens every time you try
to delete an item. The response, of course, is to press Y for yes. But
that shouldn't be happening in the In Box. I wonder if there isn't some
kind of security setting on your Outlook which is too high.

I have been given some suggestions, but so far, none have resolved this

Not in native Windows. There are programs that purport to read what's on
 the
clipboard, but those that I've checked out have been something less than
great. Search on Google for clipboard viewer without the quotes.

[JAWS-Users] I AM REMOVING MYSELF FROM THIS LIST!!!

2007-01-21 Thread Anthony Vece

Hi Everyone;

Around the first week in January, I posted a message to the group.

I eluded to the fact that I believe we should treat each other with the same
respect and compassion that we would like to be treated with.

While I can only be responsible for myself and my own actions, I feel that
certain people on this list are of a different feeling namely, the list
moderator.

Everyone has a bad day from time to time however, the list moderator of whom
I speak is an individual who does not stick to his own rules.

Bob Batchelor posted a message about people and his ideas about what they
should know about there computer.

Their are people on this list who range from novices to seasoned users and
all of us do our best to contribute to the list.

My attitude in some cases, leaves a lot to be desired.

I refer to my bashing of Freedom Scientific.

If I would have stopped and thought about some messages I posted, I would
have never posted them.

Now, I understand that Bob Batchelor may have been booted from this list
without any knowledge of his dismissal.

If that is the case then, I am removing myself from this list and, I urge
any free thinking American, who respects our constitution and the first
amendment to do the same.

Bob did not use any profanity and he did not engage in any character
assassination.

This I find to be disgusting.

None of us are perfect.

If their is a message that annoys you, just hit the delete key.

That's what it's for.

I ask that the list moderators examine there own messages and attitudes.

Sincerely

Anthony J.; Ave. R.
