[JAWS-Users] Address Book Question
I am using Outlook and JAWS 7.0. I used to be able to scroll down my list of names in the address book and if I had a telephone number for that person, it would read it after saying the person's name. I no longer hear the telephone numbers being spoken. I'm not aware of any changes that were made, so I'm wondering what happened? How can I get this ability back? I tried restarting my computer to no avail. This was really handy for me when I was searching for someone's telephone number. [JAWS-Users] Jaws and Java
For those brave souls who have installed Java and the Access Bridge, have you found any degradation in system performance? Also, how are Java and the Access Bridge for working with the current versions? Jaws help mentions version 2.1.4.1 for Java, and I see they are up to 5 now. Does this mean you're going to be using a version of Jaws less than 8 or 8 and above. Answering this question will answer your original question. If you are going to be using Jaws version 7.1 and below, your best bet is to buy a computer sooner, rather than later. As it is, new computers will still have the option of having XP on them, therefore, if you're going to be buying a computer from places like Best Buy, Radio Shack, Dell or HP, or if you live in Canada, future Shop, there will be systems available that are relatively cheap and will be running Windows XP. If you decide to buy later, you'll only be able to get systems that are running Vista, as these places tend to sell you systems that are state of the art, which means more expensive and more updated, and, as people have already said, 7.1 and lower will not work with Vista. On the other hand, if you have or plan to have Jaws 8 in your hand, than you may want to wait until later, as there are no doubt going to be updates and consumer problems outlined with Vista that are currently not known. [JAWS-Users] Re: Toggle between normaltext and compressed line on braille display
I believe you have in mind the 'rapid reading' checkbox, outlined below. Can you give an example of what you want to do, and tell us your model of braille display? Do you have a Freedom Scientific braille display such as one of the pac Mate or Focus types? For them, there is a 'rapid reading' checkbox, which has the effect of shortening the display length to 20 cells. It can be checked to enable this, in the Configuration manager, Set Options, Braille Options, Advanced Options... dialogue. My own braille display, a brailleNote with 32 cells, not a Freedom Scientific product, unfortunately does not get the benefit of this. Users of braille displays manufactured by Freedom Scientific (if there are some here) may want to make further observations. - Original Message - From: Demetry To: Jaws Users List Sent: Sunday, January 28, 2007 11:29 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Toggle between normaltext and compressed line on braille display Hi list, Does anyone knows, how is named this function? [JAWS-Users] Re: RTF Mail and Outlook and JAWS 7.1
Why does that surprise you Jonathan? RTF is a short form of Ritch Text Format. Hyperlinks are a component of Hyper Text Mark-up Language the long form of HTML. It is true that native MS-Word does include a hyperlink component but this is not a feature of RTF as it isn't a feature of plain text. When you are in Word you have the Word scripts loaded which is why Word functions are attempted and responses given when you activate those function keys in that context. [JAWS-Users] Re: Plain Text In Outlook
Goto to your options pane (Alt-T O). In Outlook 2003 you will arrive on a button 'Email Options' hit space. Now hit 'Alt-E' (Read all messages in plain text format' Hit enter a couple of times and you should be set. Now I don't know if you will like this option or not. Email in Outlook comes in three formats: 1. Plain text 2. HTML 3. RTF Jaws handles options 1 & 2 very well but has some problems with RTF also confusing is that there is another option in another portion of JAWS that specifies if RTF mail should be read in Outlook or Word. Personally I prefer when read in Outlook, but I have found some tables lock up JAWS/Outlook with Outlook using all CPU). And yes I have asked Freedom Scientific about this, but they were of little help since 1. I am using JAWS 7.1 2. I was able to prevent the lock-up by reading e-mails in RTF using the word option. I however have found that I can't distinguish links when using the word option. [JAWS-Users] Icons On Desktop Question
I have arranged my icons by name on my desktop. There are 3 and a half rows of them running vertically on the lefthand side of the screen. I am having a problem with the 3 that are on the bottom. JAWS is only pronouncing half the name of each of the 3. I am assuming that it is because they are so far down on the bottom that the bottom part of each of the 3 is being cut off or something. This will insure that you don't inadvertently download this annoying Toolbar. You then need to tap the letter B two times or until you move to the (download Adobe Reader button) and then tap enter to start the download process. If you hear a blupey sound, this means that the program is being blocked and you will need to hold down Alt and tap the letter N. then tap your applications key, down arrow to install and enter. This will tell your computer that it is OK to download the program. You then will receive a message asking if you would like to run or save this file. Up-arrow to run and enter. The download process will start. It may take a few minutes to download. When it is dun, you will be placed on a install now button, tap enter on this button. You now will be placed on a next button, tap enter on this button. You now will be placed on another install button, enter on this button. Now just sit back and let it take care of it's self. Keep in mind at any time you would like to repeat the last prompt spoken, just use the JAWS repeat command insert plus tab. Now you will need to set up the program. The license agreement will pop up. Shift tab back to the except button and tap enter. Now an accessibility option screen will pop up all you need to do hear is tab once to (use recommended settings and skip setup button) and then tap enter.
