[JAWS-Users] Re: Jaws equivalent for MAC

2007-04-13 Thread Christopher Hallsworth

Joe, we do not need additional screen readers as Mac OSX 10.4 (Tiger)
and above include one right out of the box: VoiceOver. It is as good as
JAWS is for Windows, unlike Narrator, which is limited in functionality.
Hope that helps. P.S. If you want to join any of the mac lists, please
let me know, preferably off list, as we're getting off topic. Thanks.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Jaws equivalent for MAC

2007-04-13 Thread Benjamin Hawkes-Lewis

I'm a web developer with an interest in screen reader issues who uses
Mac OS X, Windows XP, and Ubuntu Linux, just so you know where I'm
coming from.

There is no JAWS for the Mac.

For Mac OS 9, there was a screen reader called outSPOKEN sold by Alva,
who have now gone out of business, though you may be able to find a
second-hand copy.

That's the bad news. The good news is Apple built a screen reader called
VoiceOver into their new operating system, Mac OS X.

For an introduction to VoiceOver see:

http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/voiceover/

For more details see:

http://www.apple.com/accessibility/voiceover/

Key software usable with VoiceOver includes the bundled Apple Mail
program, the bundled Safari web browser, Adobe Reader, and (just
recently added) ITunes. Microsoft Office for the Mac has not yet been
made accessible with VoiceOver, but you can use other software capable
of basic editing of Office files. Your message doesn't say what you need
to use a Mac for so I'm not sure what software you'd need. Firefox is
not yet accessible with VoiceOver, partly because the developer working
on this found another job. However, it can be used as a talking browser
on the Mac with the excellent Fire Vox extension:

http://www.firevox.clcworld.net/

A future version of the free Opera browser will apparently also be
usable with VoiceOver:

http://my.opera.com/chaals/blog/speaking-out?cid=2506923

Questions about VoiceOver are best addressed to the discussion list for
http://macvisionaries.com/:

http://macvisionaries.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss_macvisionaries.com

Darcy Burnard and Holly Anderson record a podcast for VoiceOver users:

http://www.screenlessswitchers.com/

The BBC maintains a collection of Mac accessibility hints:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/accessibility/mac/sub_root.shtml

PS Just so you know, Mac is written with the M in uppercase and the a
and c in lowercase, not MAC all in capitals. When all in capitals, MAC
typically refers to a unique identifier for a networking card:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAC_address

Hope that helps.

Thanks, Chris. I just finally found (after lots of searching) info on
VoiceOver. (And you addressed my No. 1 fear--that it's MAC's Narrator.)

I will contact you off list if it appears I will be using this for possible
work. I've gotten so familiar with using JAWS, it was my hope there was
something FS had for MAC, but if not, oh well, onward and upward. Thanks
much.

By the way Lisa, should you want to delete your Internet temp files and
cookies, go to start menu, settings, control panel, and then to Internet

Under the general tab, tab to, delete history and press your spacebar.
Here you will find the options for deleting your history, cookies,
passwords, forms and possibly something else. It is entirely up to you as
to whether you want to delete any of this or not.

Sorry it has taken me a couple of days to get back to you.
The, %temp% command will delete the temp files in the root directory. It
doesn't remove the Windows temp files or the Internet temp files.
As for the cookies, that is up to you whether you want to delete them or

Lisa,
You can perform 3 of the tasks mentioned.
1. Check Disk
Go to run and type in,
chkdsk /f (drive letter): and press enter. Note the colon after the drive
letter. Unlike running a check disk on your C drive, you won't need to
reboot for this to perform.

2. Scan Disk
Per form the scan disk just as you would on the C drive, but of course
highlighting the drive you want to scan as opposed to the C drive. Then
just follow the instructions as you would for the C drive. Again, you won't
have to reboot for this to run.

3. Defrag
Perform as you would for the C drive but again, highlight the drive you want
to defrag.

One more step that I didn't include in those instructions is cleaning up the
temp files.
This should be performed on the C drive.
Close all applications with the exception of Jaws.
Go to run and type in: %temp% and press enter. Note the percent sign before
and after temp.
Press enter. This will bring up a list of temp files that you can delete.
Do a control A to select all.
Now do a shift delete and say yes to, are you sure you want to delete these
items?
If it fails to delete some items, make sure all of your applications are
closed and try again.
When finished, do an alt f4 to close.

I don't advise deleting the Windows temp files, but they are mainly located

don't advise it.
The Internet temp files are located in, c:\documents and settings\(your

Lisa,
Sorry it has taken me a couple of days to get back to you.
The, %temp% command will delete the temp files in the root directory. It
doesn't remove the Windows temp files or the Internet temp files.
As for the cookies, that is up to you whether you want to delete them or
not. Deleting them won't do anything to enhance the performance of your PC.

Lisa,
You can perform 3 of the tasks mentioned.

  Lisa,

I don't advise deleting the Windows temp files, but they are mainly located
in the, c:\windows\system32 folder. Plus there may be others scattered around
in various applications. But again, unless you know what you are deleting, I
don't advise it.
The Internet temp files are located in, c:\documents and settings\(your
profile name)\local settings\temporary Internet files. This is where your temp
files and cookies are stored. Most of these files provide faster loading of
visited web pages. I don't see that it affects the performance of your PC by
removing them.

Compacting Outlook Express - WorldStart Computer Tips and Computer Help

WorldStart.Com Computer Tips Help

Tip #3319 - Compacting Outlook Express

Q:
I use Outlook Express and an annoying little thing started happening
recently. Every time I close OE down, a message pops up that says To free
up disk
space, Outlook Express can compact your messages. This may take up to a few
minutes. What does this mean exactly and should I do it or not? Please
help!

A:
This is an excellent question. I too use Outlook Express here at the office
and this same thing happened to me awhile back as well. I really didn't know
why it just suddenly started happening and to be honest with you, for quite
some time, I just hit Cancel on the pop up message. I just wanted to get rid
of it. Well, come to find out, I should have listened to the message. Let me
explain.

We all delete e-mails from our Inbox on a daily basis, don't we? Then most
of us probably go on to delete those e-mails out of the Deleted Items folder
as well. That way, they'll all be gone for good, right? Well, not exactly.
Outlook Express works in the same way as your hard drive when you're trying
to delete something from your regular system. Even though we think we've
deleted the information completely, it sticks around until it is covered up
with
something else.

So, when you delete the e-mails from your Deleted Items folder, they
actually go to the Outlook Express store folder (the .dbx folder) and even
though you
can't see them, they are still there, taking up space. This is when
compacting steps in. When you see the compact message, you may think it's
just going
to cut down your e-mails in size a little, but do nothing else. Well, in all
actuality, when you compact, the e-mails that are now in your store folder
are removed. This then allows for extra e-mail storage space and more than
likely, faster e-mail service in the way OE opens, closes and runs in
general.

Now, Outlook Express will automatically compact your messages for you after
the 100th time of opening and closing the program. As you can see from the
above
information, it is essential that you let the compact process go, in order
to keep your e-mail program working correctly. So, when the compacting
starts,
don't interrupt it. Just let it finish. It should only take a few minutes
and then your Outlook Express will be up and running just like new.

Okay, so what if you get the message when you're trying to shut your
computer down for the day? It's not really in your best interest to wait
around for
it to complete, so what else can you do? Well, you can do the compacting at
any time and when it's best for you. You may want to do it on a lunch break
or when you're not going to be using your computer for awhile.

To get started, go to File and choose Work Offline. This will ensure that no
new messages come through while the compact is running. You should also turn
off any other programs you have going, but you can keep your firewall and
antivirus software on. Now, you should also back up your e-mail before you
begin
this process, just in case you happen to lose any important e-mails. This is
up to you, but read
here
for a quick way to get the backup done. Once you're done with the backup, go
to File, Folder and choose Compact All Folders. Again, once that starts,
don't
mess with it until it's done. Just let it run and like I said before, it
should only take a few minutes.

Now, there might be some times when you just want to compact one folder at a
time. That's no problem either. To do that, select the folder you want to
compact
(Inbox, Outbox, etc.) by just clicking and highlighting it in the left side
panel on the main page of your Outlook Express. Next, go to File, Folder and
select Compact. That will then compact only that one single folder. This
should be done if you make big changes to a particular folder.

Also, just in case you were wondering; when you do a complete compact on all
of your folders, Outlook Express starts with all of your e-mail and news
folders
and it finishes up with the store .dbx folder, which is where all your
deleted e-mails sit. On a final note, you should make it a monthly routine
to compact
all of your folders, because it really will help with your e-mail's speed
and performance and you can't beat that!

2007-04-13 Thread Flor Lynch

Others have asserted that when messages are deleted from Deleted Items they
are deleted permanently. that's the simple answer. In fact, they are still
on the computer but not in a usable form, and it is the compaction of all
folders process which removes them entirely. If, for instance, you had a
corruption problem with one of your .dbx files - one of the OE folders - you
might delete that folder and recover an older version of it which would
contain some older messages. It's not a straightforward process, however.

in the, c:\windows\system32 folder. Plus there may be others scattered
around in various applications. But again, unless you know what you are
deleting, I don't advise it.
The Internet temp files are located in, c:\documents and settings\(your
profile name)\local settings\temporary Internet files. This is where your
temp files and cookies are stored. Most of these files provide faster
loading of visited web pages. I don't see that it affects the performance
of your PC by removing them.

Lisa,
Sorry it has taken me a couple of days to get back to you.
The, %temp% command will delete the temp files in the root directory. It
doesn't remove the Windows temp files or the Internet temp files.
As for the cookies, that is up to you whether you want to delete them or
not. Deleting them won't do anything to enhance the performance of your PC.

I'm using Jaws 8 with XP home and IE7. Any ideas what might be

There is in fact no harm in deleting Windows temporary files. Windows
replaces any of its temporary files as needed with fresh one.

  Lisa,
You can perform 3 of the tasks mentioned.
  1. Check Disk
Go to run and type in,
chkdsk /f (drive letter): and press enter. Note the colon after the
drive letter. Unlike running a check disk on your C drive, you won't need
to reboot for this to perform.

  2. Scan Disk
Per form the scan disk just as you would on the C drive, but of course
highlighting the drive you want to scan as opposed to the C drive. Then
just follow the instructions as you would for the C drive. Again, you won't
have to reboot for this to run.

  3. Defrag
Perform as you would for the C drive but again, highlight the drive
you want to defrag.

One more step that I didn't include in those instructions is cleaning
up the temp files.
This should be performed on the C drive.
Close all applications with the exception of Jaws.
Go to run and type in: %temp% and press enter. Note the percent sign
before and after temp.
Press enter. This will bring up a list of temp files that you can
delete.
Do a control A to select all.
  Now do a shift

[JAWS-Users] Re: about my new group created

2007-04-13 Thread David A Ferrin

Interestingly enough that's how all of my groups have been setup for years
now. I point this out because the guidelines state that such posts as this
are to be run by one of the four moderators on here first. So any further
discussion on this subject should be handled off list please folks. If
anybody is unclear as to what the guidelines are then visit the home page
and look under the page of the same name. We are of the opinion that this
list is getting to be so large that the need for cutting down on the off
topic stuff is more important than ever before. It is quite often that I
approve such things but since none of us were given the chance is the reason
for this email.

David, I believe I read on this list that if one uninstalls IE7, IE6
 would
automatically replace it. Is that really true or do I have to install
 iE6
 from a download?

No since jaws 7 does not have built in support for IE 7. You will need
 at
least 7.1 but 8.0 would be better.

You can't spell it and put spaces around the letters so it can'tcrash
jaws? That's what i do if i find a word that can crash the elequence driver.
Aso let FS know about this as well.
