Thank you Bob for what you had to say, but I have to differ with you some on
this. I learned more from list like this than any tutorial! I think everyone
on list like this one for all their hard work so people like me can learn!

I myself think it is rather sad that people don't know the basic names or
functions of their own computer system for whatever reason. Even worse they
don't take a minute or two to try and do BASIC research on their own to at
least find out before resorting to information boards like this.

This board is here to deal with a piece of software that is added to a
computer and answer questions pertaining to the functionality of that
software and how it interacts with other software on your computer.

In this modern day of information, technology and the internet it is so much
easier to have access to information than ever before. The problem is people
develop habits that tend to make them lazy. The tendency to being spoon fed
instead of searching or looking up for ones self becomes the rule of thumb
instead of the occasional aide when you get stuck and need assistance being
pointed in the right direction.

People that want to drive a car take drivers education, read the manual of
the car to at least to get a basic understanding of how it operates and then
gets someone to sit next to them while they drive (learners permit) for a
sense of reassurance just in case and then finally given a road test and a
written test to ensure they have learned the laws of the road and where the
car jack is located in case they have a flat. For those that have a flat
there is an Owners manual to reference how to change the tire in case it
is your first time doing so.

While operating a car, much like a computer, there are certain rules or laws
one needs to know before going unassisted. I am sure knowledgeable people
like Walt and others here didn't get to the point of their vast knowledge by
osmosis or being spoon fed!

Take a little responsibility for yourself and do the homework/search
yourself and know this place is here as a support and backup when needed.

This post is my opinion and not the owners of this board.

Ray Boyce's post and follow up post concerning the taskbar shows the fruits
of ones labor/search. Ray, care to write a tip on, The Art of Doing a
Search for the tips and tricks section of the board's web page?

Yes I expect some to smack me around a bit for my post. But I think it
needed being said. Maybe some do not know how to go about a basic search on
the internet either. shrug

This is an absolute violation of the guide lines and as such I have
reluctantly taken action in this matter. We have all been beginners at one
time or another ourselves. I sure didn't hit the ground running back in
1989 when I first touched a computer, and believe me folks I went to a
computer school that had an extremely oppressive environment where the
instructors would rather yell at a student then help them out with a
problem. I created this list on the premise that anybody could ask any
question relating to the topic of this list without having to be afraid of
what another list member would say. Yes of course the hope is that all will
gain the confidence to try things on their own and when they get stuck the
list will be here to help out. The thing is there are over 200 members on
here and everybody is at a different skill level than everybody else. My
wife was on another list and she asked a question on there only to receive
an abusive answer from another list member, well I couldn't do anything
about that list but I sure can do something here. So this group will
continue to run the way it has where everybody can feel safe to ask a
question without worrying about reprisal, because I believe it is worth
doing.

I just wanted to say that I've often seen a few posts on this list which I
felt were a little tough on the questioner and I was worried to contribute
even when I have the time for fear that my responses came up less than
stellar.
Its important that everyone can contribute equally and feel that their

 HiMaralyn
 07 Introduction to Windows

This learning module is entitled, An Introduction to Windows. This
lesson
introduces you to the primary controls of the Windows Desktop and how to
 navigate
between and within these controls. We will also discuss how to modify the
Windows Desktop for optimal use with JAWS for Windows.

You can think of the Desktop as the parent window to all other windows.
Each of the components of the Windows Desktop and the various programs or
 applications
that you want to run on your computer, such as your word processor, e-mail
package, or Internet browser can all be considered descendant windows of
the
Windows Desktop. As we move on through this tutorial, you'll get a good
idea of how the hierarchy of Windows works. Currently, my focus is on the
 Windows
Desktop, but there is nothing selected. If your focus is not on the
Windows
 Desktop, please press LEFT WINDOWS+M.

Okay, now that we're at a common starting point. I'm going to press the
TAB
 key one time.

TAB. Start button. To open, press ENTER.

We hear JAWS speak, Start button. The Start button is what's activated
when you press the Windows logo key. When you press spacebar on the start
 button
or when you activate the Windows logo key, it opens a menu called the
Start
menu. The Start menu is where you go to launch all your Windows programs.
We'll come back to the start menu later. There are three other parts of
the
desktop that I'd like to show you.

To move to the next item, simply press the TAB key.

Most of you will probably land on the Task bar. However, some of you may
 hear something like the following:

TAB. Tool bar. Launch Internet Explorer browser button. A series of
graphical buttons. Menus usually contain the same options.

This is the Quick Launch Toolbar and it can be turned on or off by the end
user. By default in Windows '98, the Tool bar is turned on. By default
in
 Windows
 XP, it is turned off.
If you landed on the Quick Launch Toolbar, press TAB one more time and you
will land on the task bar.

TAB. Task bar. To move through items, press LEFT or RIGHT ARROW.

The task bar is where we can go to find out what programs are currently
open
on our computer. To navigate the Task bar, simply press the LEFT and
RIGHT
ARROW keys. I'm going to press the LEFT ARROW now.

 JAWS TAB.

I hear, JAWS tab, and now I'll press the RIGHT ARROW.

 JAWS TAB.

From this, we know JAWS is currently the only program running on my
computer. If you heard something else, it means that you currently have
 more than one
program running on your computer. For the moment though, we won't worry
about that. I'm going to press the TAB key again.

TAB. System tray. JAWS speaks the first icon. Use your left and right
arrows
to move through all the items in your system tray. Show how you wrap back
to
the beginning. Mention that you can move to the system tray in this
manner,
but it is much more efficient to use INSERT+F11.
 Press TAB again.
 TAB. Desktop. List view...

Now we land with our focus on the Desktop. The Desktop list view contains
icons, or shortcuts, that allow you to launch programs or access folders
and
files. As a Windows user, you can specify what shortcuts you want to be
placed on your Desktop. Of course, we can easily remove these shortcuts
 from
 the Desktop, as well.

When we first tabbed to the Desktop list view, we heard JAWS speak,
 Desktop. List view.

So, moving to our Desktop gave us several important pieces of information.
First, it told us that we had just tabbed to the control called the
Desktop
list view. Next we were told that the item we landed on in this list was
selected or not selected, and it's name. We also learned that there were
a
 total
of ## items in this list on my computer, and that the focus is on the ##
item in the list. Finally, JAWS' Tutor Mode instructed us how we could
move

Ok, try this one, from the free on-line dictionary and thesaurus, computer

An area on the right side of the taskbar on the Windows interface used to
display the status of various functions, such as speaker volume and modem
transmission.
Applications also insert icons on the System Tray to give you a quick entrance
into either the application itself or some auxiliary function. If you disable
an application icon in the System Tray by right clicking it and selecting a
Disable or Exit option, you are only eliminating it for this session. When
you start up Windows again, it will reappear.

Good post Ray, where did you get it? I'm figuring from some manual or
another, just curious. I took a quick look and I don't think there's
anything like this on my web site as of yet. I have had memory lapses in

[JAWS-Users] Re: what is the system tray

2007-01-19 Thread Ray Boyce

HiMaralyn
07 Introduction to Windows

This learning module is entitled, An Introduction to Windows. This lesson
introduces you to the primary controls of the Windows Desktop and how to
navigate
between and within these controls. We will also discuss how to modify the
Windows Desktop for optimal use with JAWS for Windows.

You can think of the Desktop as the parent window to all other windows.
Each of the components of the Windows Desktop and the various programs or
applications
that you want to run on your computer, such as your word processor, e-mail
package, or Internet browser can all be considered descendant windows of the
Windows Desktop. As we move on through this tutorial, you'll get a good
idea of how the hierarchy of Windows works. Currently, my focus is on the
Windows
Desktop, but there is nothing selected. If your focus is not on the Windows
Desktop, please press LEFT WINDOWS+M.

Okay, now that we're at a common starting point. I'm going to press the TAB
key one time.

TAB. Start button. To open, press ENTER.

We hear JAWS speak, Start button. The Start button is what's activated
when you press the Windows logo key. When you press spacebar on the start
button
or when you activate the Windows logo key, it opens a menu called the Start
menu. The Start menu is where you go to launch all your Windows programs.
We'll come back to the start menu later. There are three other parts of the
desktop that I'd like to show you.

By default in
Windows
XP, it is turned off.
If you landed on the Quick Launch Toolbar, press TAB one more time and you
will land on the task bar.

TAB. Task bar. To move through items, press LEFT or RIGHT ARROW.

The task bar is where we can go to find out what programs are currently open
on our computer. To navigate the Task bar, simply press the LEFT and RIGHT

Use your left and right arrows
to move through all the items in your system tray. Show how you wrap back to
the beginning. Mention that you can move to the system tray in this manner,
but it is much more efficient to use INSERT+F11.
Press TAB again.
TAB. Desktop. List view...

Now we land with our focus on the Desktop. The Desktop list view contains
icons, or shortcuts, that allow you to launch programs or access folders and

First, it told us that we had just tabbed to the control called the Desktop
list view. Next we were told that the item we landed on in this list was
selected or not selected, and it's name. We also learned that there were a
total
of ## items in this list on my computer, and that the focus is on the ##
item in the list. Finally, JAWS' Tutor Mode instructed us how we could move
in
this environment.

If the item that we're over isn't currently selected, any action we attempt
to take regarding this item wouldn't work. Before we can take an action in
a list view such as this, the computer wants to know which item we want to
change. We could select the item that we're over by pressing the SPACEBAR,
or by moving to another item with our ARROW keys as Tutor Mode instructed
us. You can unselect an item on the desktop by pressing CTRL+SPACEBAR.

Select the icon if needed.

My Computer. Space

As you heard, My Computer, the first item in my list, is now selected. I
can move around within the Desktop list view by using my UP, DOWN, LEFT, and
RIGHT
ARROW keys. Throughout these lessons, we're going to encounter some list
views that are arranged vertically, in which you only need to use the UP and
DOWN ARROW keys to navigate. However, the Desktop list view is arranged in
rows and columns, and since the Desktop list view is definable by the user,
the number of times that you need to press the LEFT, RIGHT, UP, and DOWN
ARROW keys is going to vary from
