No, this is on my wifes laptop. And a friend of mine did a remote access, and
found out that apparently, one of the windows updates did not do the driver
support updates for that CD rom. So, we are going to purchase

Is this the same drive you were having trouble with before?
I don't know, but it sounds like some kind of hardware issue to me. Maybe
try some of the steps listed
