I figured it out, woohoo!
I typed it the wrong way in the name field putting first then last and it
has to be last and then first and by doing that then it will sort
It's with MS Office 2000.

Hello. go to sort and tab to the set of radio buttons that say no header
row and arrow down. Now tab to the first edit combo box and arrow to the
colume you want to sort by and hit ok. That should help
