Re: [JAWS-Users] JFW demo version
I don't doubt you, either. I can say only that the few times I was stuck using JAWS in demo mode, I had to adjust speed and other functions back to my comfort level each time it reloaded. Perhaps I was using the terms "personal settings," as in ENU settings, too loosely. Is that consistent with your experience? Otherwise, as Eric, you and others have said, JAWS is just about fully functional in demo mode. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of David Ferrin Sent: Saturday, March 11, 2017 7:22 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] JFW demo version Can you confirm this statement? Re: [JAWS-Users] text as an image
Once the OCR is finished, you are placed in the virtual window where you can select parts or the entire text, copy it to the clipboard and paste it into another application's editor window. After pasting, you'll have to take care of formatting. Reed -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Mike B. For those that would like to know more about OCR & Layered Keystrokes read below. here's the information from the jaws help. Convenient OCR Frequently, you will encounter images that contain textual information. These can include a PDF file, the setup screen of an application, or the menu of selections for a DVD movie. While these images contain text that is readable by a sighted person, JAWS is unable to read the text as it is part of the image. The Convenient OCR (Optical Character Recognition) feature enables you to access any image on the screen that includes text, or recognize all of the text in a PDF document. With just a few simple keystrokes, JAWS will recognize the image in a matter of seconds and activate the JAWS cursor so you can navigate the resulting text. The recognized text will be in the same location as the actual image on the screen. In order to differentiate the recognized text from other text that may be in the window, JAWS will use a different voice when it encounters the recognized text. When you activate the PC cursor, or switch to another application or dialog box, the text is removed and you will need to perform the OCR again. If you open a PDF document and there is no text available to read, you can perform a keystroke that will recognize the entire document and place the resulting text into the Results Viewer for reading. You can then use standard reading commands to review the text or select and copy sections of content for pasting in other applications. To use Convenient OCR, the following layered keystrokes are available: INSERT+SPACEBAR, O, D. Recognizes the currently open PDF document. INSERT+SPACEBAR, O, W. Recognizes the current application window that has focus. INSERT+SPACEBAR, O, S. Recognizes the entire screen. INSERT+SPACEBAR, O, C. Recognizes the currently selected control, such as a graphical button. INSERT+SPACEBAR, O, Q. Cancels recognition while it is in progress. INSERT+SPACEBAR, O, QUESTION MARK. Speaks a brief help message describing the commands in the OCR layer. The following examples illustrate just some of the uses of this feature. You insert a DVD movie into your computer which brings up a menu allowing you to select from various DVD features. You press INSERT+SPACEBAR, O, W and after a few seconds, JAWS will alert you that OCR is complete. At this point, the JAWS cursor will be active and you can navigate around the screen using the ARROW keys and read the text of the menu. When you hear the option you want, press NUMPAD SLASH to perform a left-mouse-click, or INSERT+NUMPAD PLUS to route PC to JAWS to activate the option. Prior to JAWS 13, this menu would have been completely inaccessible. Note: Depending on the type of screen the DVD displays and the quality of the text, the Convenient OCR may not always work. Some DVD screens will be recognized better than others. You open a PDF in Adobe Reader which turns out to be inaccessible. Press INSERT+SPACEBAR, O, D to have JAWS begin recognizing the entire document. After several seconds, the contents of the PDF file are displayed in the Results Viewer for reading. Use standard reading commands to review the text or select and copy sections of content for pasting in other applications. For example, you could select all, then copy and paste into a Microsoft Word document, which you could then save. Note: The OCR process takes longer for larger PDF files. As text is recognized, it is added to the end of the existing text already in the Results Viewer. This allows you to continue reading without interruption as the document is processed. If you are currently not reading using Say All, JAWS announces the current line as new text is added to the Results Viewer to indicate that OCR is still in progress. Note: If the PDF document requires a password, you will be prompted to enter it when you first press INSERT+SPACEBAR, O, D. You must enter the correct password before the OCR process will continue. You try to install or use an application whose interface is not accessible, such as AcronisR True ImageT Home 2011 or 2012. If no text is readily available when pressing TAB or when using the JAWS Cursor, you can try Convenient OCR. Start with the PC Cursor and press INSERT+SPACEBAR, O, W to recognize the text of the welcome screen graphic. You can then use the JAWS Cursor and

Re: [JAWS-Users] Weather Underground has changed
If you are using research it you should know that it is not reliable. It is a service provided by jaws but it is not supported. It will work when they set it up but every time the website changes the way things are done on their sight research it will no longer work. Since Jaws does not provide anyone to support this between releases research it is not updated as website change. It would seem to me that if they are not going to support something they would not offer it because when it quits working they are going to have a bunch of unhappy campers on their hands. Instead of relying on research it is just as useful to go to the site yourself and fight with the changes as they come about. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Vicki Sent: Friday, March 10, 2017 3:55 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Weather Underground has changed It's not working on the computer here either. Re: [JAWS-Users] JFW demo version
Hi Donna. If you install a full package of Jaws on a computer, without a licence, Jaws will run in 40 minute mode every time the computer is rebooted. Be aware of, that many computers with Windows 10 are set up to only goto sleep mode when shutdown the computer, and Jaws will therefor not work after a new start of the computer. Goto power management to change this, so the computer really shut's down when selecting this, and get a fresh start of windows, when turning on again and Jaws will run in 40 minute mode. Re: [JAWS-Users] ElBraille questions.
Hi, Have you checked out this site? http://elbraille.com I think with any device, it depends on what you are going to use it with that ultimately justifies which one would be best. I just had a similar conversation with someone when ask to consult on the decision to purchase a Focus display and an iPad or wait until one of the L Braille devices comes out. After discussing what they did on a daily basis both for work and play, and what devices they already owned, I advised them to wait for the L Braille 14. I have a 128 GB iPad Mini 4 which I pay $32 a month for on my phone plan. Eventually I will trade that in for a newer tablet. I already own a focus display. And I like it very much. This is not my primary laptop. That is a Windows 10 Home 64 bit machine with two internal drives and 16 GB of ram. It is my primary home computer. I would not want an L Braille to be my primary home computer. But maybe that is just me. There is a gentlemen on some of the technical lists who is involved with the L Braille. I will see if I can point him this way. I know he is on one of these Jaws lists. Hi again. I actually did some checking today with VFO, and the El Braille is actually a docking station for the focus 40 or 14. A docking station with memory storage. The price, $1795. Here is my question. If you get a laptop, say, for $800, add in $995, I believe it is for Jaws, that would come to roughly the same price, but you would have probably a terabite of memory on the PC, only 160 GB on the ElBraille. What would be the incentive for bying this docking station with memory, other than size advantage? I asked the salesman to help me understand that rationale so I could hellp sell the idea to our agency. He could not come up with anything. Am I missing something here? Judy The ElBraille is essentially a Windows 10 PC in a notetaker sized package. You can use Internet Explorer or Firefox. If you already use Jaws on a PC with a braille display then the experience should be the same. I havent used the Polaris so I cant comment on any differences. Re: [JAWS-Users] Weather Underground has changed
Companies sometimes have 2 versions of their site. One is for a desktop computer, the other is mobile friendly meaning a mobile phone can access it with no problems. The desktop site is loaded with things that make the site look good on a desktop computer namely graphics. The mobile site does not use much in the way of graphics because mobile phones aren't as powerful as a desktop computer. They tend to be more text based. From what I've seen, the folks at FS tend to use the mobile site for programming the research it feature because it is easier to work with. So whe the mobile site goes down, so does research it. A perfect example of what I'm talking about is facebook. Have a look at the main site, www.facebook.com. Then compare it to m.facebook.com, which is the mobile site. You will find that the mobile site is faster and easier to use than the main site.
