Well, it depends, of course, on what you have on your computer. There are
any number of possibilities.

Mike, I agree with you about pinning to the taskbar. But for me, there are
so many ways of loading JAWS. To add to those in this thread, you can also
press Windows key-m (or presumably Windows key-d) to put focus on the

I agree with Adrian. I've found that I have to manually remove the shortcut

When you say that the JAWS screen disappeared, it is because you have checked
the Run JAWS from System Tray option in the Basic Settings dialog, which

Hi, Ted. Welcome to JAWS!

To search within an open message, add the JAWS key to control-f. this
three-key combination comes in useful in many common applications even when
control-f also works.

To search through the messages in a folder, place focus at one of the
folder's messages and press shift-control-f. this is a Microsoft command. An
alternative is to press control-e, another MS command.

I just use my favourite windows keyboard command: windows-r for run. I use
it for almost everything nowadays. Going to folders, running programmes,
accessing drives. Very handy. In this case, I just do windows-r, jaws18,
enter, and jAWS starts without fail. I started doing this because I got
annoyed that every time JAWS updates, the shortcut is removed.

Someone else wrote off-list with the same idea, Patti, and it makes sense.
Mike, I agree with you about pinning to the taskbar. But for me, there are
so many ways of loading JAWS. To add to those in this thread, you can also
press Windows key-m (or presumably Windows key-d) to put focus on the
desktop. Press control-home to take you to the beginning of the list. then
press j to take you to the first version of JAWS that appears on the desktop
or a second or third time for the version you want, then press enter. It
takes longer to explain than do.

I agree with Adrian. I've found that I have to manually remove the shortcut
from the previous JAWS version before I can put it in for the latest version
installed. For me this is not a big deal as again, I have the same practice
as Adrian. I usually have the current version, and the 2 previous versions
installed on my machine. So I go in and first change the oldest version to
Control+Alt+L, the version prior to the current version to
Control+Alt+Control+Alt+k,
and set the current version to Control+Alt+j.

In addition, at least in my past experience, you first need to remove that
hotkey from the previous version of JAWS, assuming you keep it on the
system. Someone posted a while ago that creating a shortcut for a new
version of JAWS makes the shortcut go away in the earlier one, but that was
never my experience. Sometimes I'll assign a hotkey to each version of JAWS
on my system, such as control-alt-j for the current version, control-alt-k
for the preceding one, etc. But you can see the problem. The logical
shortcut would be control-alt-I, since I precedes j in the alphabet, but
I've already assigned control-alt-I to Internet Explorer.
In any event, be sure to remove an the shortcut from an old version of JAWS
before assigning that shortcut to the new version.

Hi Miriam,
When you install a new version of Jaws you will have to put the hotkey back
in again. So for example when Jaws 19 comes out you will have to put the
hotkey back in again. Just remember that. Also if you go to the Jaws
website and get a complete version of Jaws with an update and install it you
will have to reinstall the hotkey for Jaws.

Hi Andy,

I can't say this will work everytime, but if it works for you then, that's
all it takes. It has worked for me in the past.

This will only work on an already activated copy of JAWS.

Steps:

1. Press the JAWS key + the J key, for me it is Insert+J

2. Go to the help sub menu.

3. Go to the Update authorization option

4. You'll get a dialog with several buttons, click the Start
Authorization button.

5. In this dialog, choose manual activation, then click next.

6. In this next dialog there is a read only field with your locking
code, and two input fields, one has your entire authorization code, the
other is for your license code or serial number.

7. Copy the authorization code, then cancel out of the dialog.

I think the best way to answer your query is to explain how the JAWS menu is
laid out. But don't begin by pressing alt after you've pressed JAWS key+j.
so:

JAWS key+j opens the JAWS menu
Right away, JAWS verbalizes "Options submenu." You can use your up and down
arrow keys for other choices or press enter to open the options submenu.
If you open the options submenu, you'll find other choices that you can
locate by pressing the up and down arrow keys. For example, there's
so-called "Basics" and two "voice" dialogs. Press enter on the one you want
and proceed through the dialog by tabbing.
If, instead of pressing enter on "options" you arrow up, you'll notice such
choices as "About," "Help," "Utilities," and so on. Most of these choices
are submenus. You press enter to locate the choices within the submenu.

To my mind, a shortcoming in the JAWS menu is that once you click on
something and then escape out of it, you simultaneously escape out of the
JAWS menu system. If you're exploring the menu, it means being bounced out
of it and pressing JAWS key+j several times. But the effort is worth it.

I hope this is clear.
