I just use my favourite windows keyboard command: windows-r for run. I use it for almost everything nowadays. Going to folders, running programmes, accessing drives. Very handy. In this case, I just do windows-r, jaws18, enter, and jAWS starts without fail. I started doing this because I got annoyed that every time JAWS updates, the shortcut is removed.

Someone else wrote off-list with the same idea, Patti, and it makes sense. Mike, I agree with you about pinning to the taskbar. But for me, there are so many ways of loading JAWS. To add to those in this thread, you can also press Windows key-m (or presumably Windows key-d) to put focus on the desktop. Press control-home to take you to the beginning of the list. then press j to take you to the first version of JAWS that appears on the desktop or a second or third time for the version you want, then press enter. It takes longer to explain than do. -----Original Message----- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of patti Sent: Saturday, August 05, 2017 9:09 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Re-starting Jaws 18 I have my shortcut as jaws 17, alt, ctrl 7 And jaws 18, alt, ctrl, 8 That makes it easy for me, lol. Patti I agree with Adrian. I've found that I have to manually remove the shortcut from the previous JAWS version before I can put it in for the latest version installed. For me this is not a big deal as again, I have the same practice as Adrian. I usually have the current version, and the 2 previous versions installed on my machine. So I go in and first change the oldest version to Control+Alt+L, the version prior to the current version to Control+Alt+Control+Alt+k, and set the current version to Control+Alt+j. Someone posted a while ago that creating a shortcut for a new version of JAWS makes the shortcut go away in the earlier one, but that was never my experience. Sometimes I'll assign a hotkey to each version of JAWS on my system, such as control-alt-j for the current version, control-alt-k for the preceding one, etc. But you can see the problem. The logical shortcut would be control-alt-I, since I precedes j in the alphabet, but I've already assigned control-alt-I to Internet Explorer. In any event, be sure to remove an the shortcut from an old version of JAWS before assigning that shortcut to the new version. -----Original Message----- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Mr. Ed Sent: Friday, August 04, 2017 8:01 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Re-starting Jaws 18 Hi Miriam, When you install a new version of Jaws you will have to put the hotkey back in again. So for example when Jaws 19 comes out you will have to put the hotkey back in again. Just remember that. Also if you go to the Jaws website and get a complete version of Jaws with an update and install it you will have to reinstall the hotkey for Jaws. Here are the steps to do that. 1. Press windows + M to go to your desktop. 2. Press the letter J until you hear Jaws 18. 3. Press the application key and arrow up one time and press enter on properties. 4. Tab two times and you should hear short cut key. If it says none then press the letter J If it says shortcut key ctrl+alt+J then just press the escape key. 6. Now tab until you hear ok, then press enter. Another dialog box may come up just press yes or continue then you should be done. Now you should have a shortcut key so when you press ctrl+alt+J it should start Jaws. Now if you use the other hotkey that now should work. I wrote down to press Jaws key plus windows key plus F4 and this turns off Jaws. And if I press these keys again, they act as a toggle. Am I supposed to press them simultaneously? When I press them the first time, I can see with my hugely magnified Magic that the screen changes. But I haven't gotten Jaws to restart with those keys or with any others. I am having to resort to turning the computer off with the button and then turning it on again. Even though I can see that I've moved to the screen that says, "Shut Down", the key strokes don't work. But, after I press the button, just before the screen changes, Jaws says something, but then the computer shuts down. I have a 64 bit windows 7 computer. I'd sell my soul for a key stroke that would just get Jaws working again without having to shut down the computer and wait for it to start and load.
