I agree: this very much depends on what you need to do with it, and your
portability requirements (the 14 is obviously more portable, but you would
have to press panning buttons much more frequently to read long documents,
for example, and there's less text available at any given moment due to the
shorter line).
Both of the braille displays that I have bought have had 40-cell lines. I
read and edit relatively complex documents frequently. I'm usually working
at a desk, so extra portability isn't necessary.

It is definitely a matter of personal preference versus what you are going
to use it for as well as what you can afford. I have a Focus 14 and I am
very happy with it. However, I often read documents with a lot of technical
words that make me wish I had a 40 cell display. And I have used the Focus
40 a few times and wish I could afford to go get one today.

braille display every day, and I love it.  The focus 14 fits needs of
certain people, but I didn't like it.  Again, it's a personal preference.
I'm not saying it's bad.  I just prefer a 40 cell display as opposed to a 14
cell display.

With the various notetakers I've used over the years, I found I 
could use either a smaller or larger display, although it did 
take a few days to get used to the change when I would switch 
sizes.  In addition to being less expensive, there is the 
ElBraille that one might want to consider adding at some point, 
and one could just purchase the ElBraille dock without having to 
send in the Focus 14, whereas, if I'm understanding things 
correctly, one would need to send in the Focus 40 to add the 
ElBraille.

They are both good devices.  It is a matter of preference.  I prefer
smaller, so that is what I would choose.  For me, the more compact the
better.

I remember Anil Lewis and I talking in the hall way at the Jernigan and he
telling me one time when I asked him about his 40 Cell display versus a
smaller one, "If you're going to read braille, then you better read
braille." It was kind of like the Nike logo, Just do it.

documents/text or solely with a mobile device where you are on the go often?
In my opinion, I would say that if you are reading documents and information
on a computer or even with a mobile device where you are not on the go as
often, get the 40 cell display. The 14 is shorter and you will have to pan
the display more to get more text on a line.
To keep this discussion JAWS relevant, both of these will work with JAWS
either way.
