Re: [JAWS-Users] Using numberpad for number input

2007-07-01 Thread Sherry Gomes
For kids, I think it's important for them to know the keyboard fully. I
would teach them numbers on the horizontal number row first. That comes
from old typing lessons I know, but it would be good for them to know it I
think. Eventually, they can learn both and choose for themselves which they
like best. But at least they can learn jaws with the number pad before
deciding which is the best number way for them.

Many thanks for this! nope - no survey ...doing some work with young kids
(pre-screen reader age) who need to input numbers - the program has its own
audio speech so no need for screen readers yet - but the question was
because some are of the opinion that you should not teach kids to use the
numberpad for number input because it will confuse them when they start
using JAWS ...?
On your second point about the Numlock default being off, a colleague used
just this argument about not using the Numpad for numbers...
Any other thoughts ?

2007-06-27 Thread Deborah Mason
On the rare occasion I use a calculator, I use the num pad rather than the
top row of numbers because I can enter the numbers more quickly using it.
The only talking calculator I ever owned had the same key configuration as
the num pad.

I still prefer using my noggin, but every now and then I get a case of the
galloping lazies and break down and use the calculator.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Using numberpad for number input

2007-06-27 Thread Eric Damery
Hello to the List,

I am Eric Damery, the Product Manager for JAWS and have been reading
some of the posts recently. While I don't have the time to answer or
comment on everything, I will try to on some of these topics such as
this NumPad subject.

The ability to toggle numlock on and off letting you use the Number Pad
as both a Number pad and Screen Reading Keys has always been a plus in
JAWS I think. As many of you mentioned, inputting numbers from the
NumPad is much easier for many than the number row, yours truly
included.

I especially appreciate the message that requested an option in JAWS to
stop turning it off by default every time you launch the computer. While
this is not in the UI of JAWS today, there is a setting in the
default.jcf file under options called Initial NumLock State which
could be changed (set it to number 2) which will tell JAWS to stop
changing it at start up. If you are interested in getting that set up
now, let us know and I will right down some steps that will help you get
this into your user folder correctly.

We are still working on the Start Up Wizard feature being expanded in
JAWS 9. I will talk with some others here and see about adding this
adjustment to the UI in that wizard. I think this will make it fairly
easy for anyone to change in the future when they decide on laptop
versus desktop and so on. Hope this is helpful.

Regards,
Eric

Hi

Yes I use it quite a bit, an example is when I have to enter all my bankk
details to go on line etc. I find it easier than feeling around the number
row. The only problem being that you must remember that the num lock is
switched on or you run into problems when ou wish to use the mumpad for
other jaws commands, numbers go in where they should not.

Hi Kurt,

If you go into the Start Menu, Programs, JAWS 8, Explore JAWS, Explore
My Settings you will probably find that you have a file here called
Default.jcf.
If so, move to the file and press the Application Key to get a context
menu.
Now, choose Open with submenu and open it with Notepad.
Now, look for the [Options] section in the file.
If you find it, move under that line, insert a blank line and paste in
the following line:
numlock=2|Num lock
Then, save the file and close it. From then on, when you boot up the num
lock will remain how it was when you shut down.
If you did not find [Options] in the file, you can move to the bottom of
the file and add the following to lines:

[Options]
numlock=2|Num lock

Hope you understand. If not, just wait till the 9.0 release and let me
see what we can do to get this as an option in the UI for you.

Eric

Eric,

It is great to know that you are spending a little time monitoring this
very useful list.

When I first switched from JAWS 6.x to 8.0 the num lock being toggled
off was very annoying to me. Although I have gotten use to it, I would
be interested in knowing how to change this setting so I can control the
num lock.

I did make the suggestion to JAWS technical support to make this a user
control option when trying to figure out what was going on with my num
lock. The representative couldn't understand why a blind person would
want to use the num pad for anything other than JAWS navigation.

I hope that the num pad on / off option does make it into a future
version of the JAWS UI. I for one like having control of my settings.
Of course then when I screw something up, I have no one to blame but
myself.

Thanks,
Kurt

this is not in the UI of JAWS today, there is a setting in the
default.jcf file under options called Initial NumLock State which
could be changed (set it to number 2) which will tell JAWS to stop
changing it at start up. If you are interested in getting that set up
now, let us know and I will right down some steps that will help you
get
this into your user folder correctly.

Regards,
Eric

Many thanks for this! nope - no survey ...doing some work with young
kids (pre-screen reader age) who need to input numbers - the program
has
its own audio speech so no need for screen readers yet - but the
question was because some are of the opinion that you should not teach

On your second point about the Numlock default being off, a colleague
used just this argument about not using the Numpad for numbers...
Any other thoughts ?

Thanks so much for the information.
I gave it a try and unfortunately it did not work...maybe because I am
logging into a LAN?
Hopefully someone else will have better luck.

Hi Kurt,

If you go into the Start Menu, Programs, JAWS 8, Explore JAWS,
Explore
My Settings you will probably find that you have a file here called
Default.jcf.
If so, move to the file and press the Application Key to get a context
menu.
Now, choose Open with submenu and open it with Notepad.
Now, look for the [Options] section in the file.
If you find it, move under that line, insert a blank line and paste in
the following line:
numlock=2|Num lock
Then, save the file and close it. From then on, when you boot up the
num
lock will remain how it was when you shut down.
If you did not find [Options] in the file, you can move to the bottom
of
the file and add the following to lines:

[Options]
numlock=2|Num lock

Hope you understand. If not, just wait till the 9.0 release and let me
see what we can do to get this as an option in the UI for you.
Regards,
Eric

Eric,

It is great to know that you are spending a little time monitoring
this
very useful list.

When I first switched from JAWS 6.x to 8.0 the num lock being toggled
off was very annoying to me. Although I have gotten use to it, I
would
be interested in knowing how to change this setting so I can control
the
num lock.

I did make the suggestion to JAWS technical support to make this a
user
control option when trying to figure out what was going on with my num
lock. The representative couldn't understand why a blind person would
want to use the num pad for anything other than JAWS navigation.

I hope that the num pad on / off option does make it into a future
version of the JAWS UI. I for one like having control of my settings.

Of course then when I screw something up, I have no one to blame but
myself.

Thanks,
Kurt

Hello to the List,

I am Eric Damery, the Product Manager for JAWS and have been reading
some of the posts recently. While I don't have the time to answer or
comment on everything, I will try to on some of these topics such as
this NumPad subject.

The ability to toggle numlock on and off letting you use the Number
Pad
as both a Number pad and Screen Reading Keys has always been a plus in
JAWS I think. As many of you mentioned, inputting numbers from the
NumPad is much easier for many than the number row, yours truly
included.

I especially appreciate the message that requested an option in JAWS
to
stop turning it off by default every time you launch the computer.
While

Hi,

I know that this subject is getting old, but forgive me, David. I
need to put my two cents in.

Like Russ, I too was an accountant before going into computer
programming. I used to use a calculator and my fingers would fly over
the number pad. What I am trying to say is that it makes perfect
sense to use the NumPad keys for entering numbers in Excel or any
other applications.

The top row was, I think, designed for typewriters which most
standard keyboards today are. I, in my old days I used to use a
keypunch machine to punch 80 cards for my programs and the layout was
similar to today's standard keyboards. (Good grief! I am giving out
my age smile!)

The IBM DOS screen reader had its own keypad for commands and you did
not have to worry about whether NumLock was on or off.

Sorry David to get off topics, but I thought that everyone should
know how important the NumPad keys are for entering numbers and Jaws
commands.

I wish there was a way for Jaws to automatically tell me whether
NumLock is off or on without hitting the NumLock key each time when I
go to use it.

Thanks for letting me put in my two cents!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Using numberpad for number input

2007-06-27 Thread Annette Carr
Most laptops have an embedded number pad in the QWERTY keyboard. On my
previous laptop, a Toshiba, and on my current laptop, a Dell, I just have to
toggle the numlock and tap the keyboard function key twice and I can enter
numbers from the right hand side of my QWERTY keyboard.

HTH,
Annette

I prefer the num pad for many, many reasons over the top row. Much quicker
than the top row of keys for me personally.
When using my laptop I get very frustrated having to use the top row for
numbers.
Have been using JAWS for about 10 years.
