One other way to help increase your battery life, that works for blinks, 
is that we can set the screen brightness to it's lowest setting.  At 
least, on my laptop, there is a hot key to change the brightness, so if I 
need a sighted person to take a look, I can just bump the brightness back 
up.

I must be getting old because right after I sent my last message I 
remembered the command to simply turn off the monitor on my lap top. Yes it 
doesn't have a dim button but FN + F2 shuts it off.

You might have that option in the battery power savings options and you 
might have it in the function keys options, the ability to dim the screen.

My laptop manufacturer agreed to provide my laptop without a monitor. 
I have a port on it to connect an external monitor but have never 
needed it. It made the laptop lighter as well.
