of jobs that require 3+ years of (each of) Perl
and Java. I have 8 years of Perl and none of Java and was beginning to wonder
if this was just another catch-all job description or if there was something
going on in the industry that I didn't know about.

I think this goes back to what one of the other posters mentioned, that is, that
applications are asking for Java and Perl not because they are in the same space, but
precisely because they are not. They are looking for 1 person
