That's what I was trying to get at. Few would fault me if I claimed that my
former employer practiced incessant micromanagement, as long as I had a few
sane examples to back up my claim. However, the phrase repeated attempts to

emotionally loaded, perhaps even indicating some unresolved psychological
flashbacks that I wouldn't want to take on as a new employer.

Yeah, I see your point. I think I was more responding to a separate, but
related topic, which wasn't really part of the thread, just something
that's been on my mind lately as I've been interviewing.

I think Terrence's phrase could be altered just a little to something like
my employer makes me feel like I'm a kindergartner or I feel like my
employer thinks I'm a kindergartner and it would be more palatable.

Best yet, turn it into a positive without ragging on the other company.

I want to work for a place where I'm given the autonomy that someone
in my position needs to be successful.

It depends on the context. When I've been interviewing, I've been asked,
why do you want to leave Socialtext? I like to answer the question
asked, even if I segue into something else like what I want from my next
employer.

I don't think you need to be unremittingly positive. If I interviewed
someone like that I'd think they were fake, and possibly even hiding
anything. Plus, I'm really straightforward, and there's no point trying to
hide that in an interview. If it's going to be a problem then I'm not a
match for the employer, and it's best for both of us to find that out
ASAP.

It should probably really be don't be a jerk, but for most people
that's too complicated so the generic advice ends up as don't talk
smack about former employers.

Smart people can pick up specific technical skills pretty fast, but
if they are hard or unpleasant to work with all bets are off.

I've talked about this, and the specific issues I have, in my
interviews, and I've gotten job offers from places where I did this.

How you express it (and maybe your history or lack of history with
that sort of issues) makes all the difference...

Do you realize you probably just said more about you than about your employer?
Good luck getting a job from anyone who reads/googles this list now.
