When we switched from XML to MapCSS, MapCSS was faster than XML with
processors with 4 or more cores. With 3 or 2 cores it was nearly as fast as

Two weeks ago XML style and the corresponding infrastructure were removed from
JOSM (see https://josm.openstreetmap.de/ticket/12282). I was a frequent user of
that style, because it is much faster than the MapCSS one. Especially when
there are hundreds thousands of nodes in a view.
