Matthew 20:26-28 But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave. Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many. Luke 2:51 He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them; and his mother kept all these things in her heart. [JOYnet] TODAY`S SAINT........ST.RICHARD de Wych
3RD APRIL 2003 ST. RICHARD BISHOP CONFESSOR (1197-1253) LIFE: Richard de Wych born . about 1197 at Droitwich, Worcestershire, from which his surname is derived; . He was the second son of Richard and Alice de Wyche. His father died while he was still young and the family property fell into a state of great delapidation. His elder brother offered to resign the inheritance to him, but Richard refused the offer, although he undertook the management of the estate and soon restored it to a good condition. He went to Oxford, where he and two companions lived in such poverty that they had only one tunic and hooded gown between them, in which they attended lectures by turns. He then went to Paris and on his return proceeded Master of Arts. At Bologna he studied canon law, in which he acquired a great reputation and was elected Chancellor of the University of Oxford. His learning and sanctity were so famed that Edmund Rich, Archbishop of Canterbury, and Robert Grosseteste, Bishop of Lincoln, both offered him the post of chancellor of their respective dioceses. Richard accepted the archbishop's offer and thenceforward became St. Edmund's intimate friend and follower. He approved the archbishop's action in opposing the king on the question of the vacant sees, accompanied him in his exile to Pontigny, was present at Soissy when he died, and made him a model in life. Richard supplied Matthew Paris with material for his biography, and, after attending the translation of his relics to Pontigny in 1249, wrote an account of the incident in a letter published by Matthew Paris (Historia major, V, VI). Retiring to the house of the Dominicans at Orleans, Richard studied theology, was ordained priest, and, after founding a chapel in honour of St. Edmund, returned to England where he became Vicar of Deal and Rector of Charring. Soon afte! rwards he was induced by Boniface of Savoy, the new Archbishop of Canterbury, to resume his former office of chancellor. In 1244 st.Richard was chosen bishop of Chichestor in preferance to the King`s nominee, a court favourite , and he recievedhis consecration at Lyon at the hands of Pope Innocent IV.. He compiled a number of statutes which regulate in great detail the lives of the clergy, the celebration of Divine service, the administration of the sacraments, church privileges, and other matters. Every priest in the diocese was bound to obtain a copy of these statutes and bring it to the diocesan synod (Wilkins, Concilia, I, 688-93); in this way the standard of life among the clergy was raised considerably. For the better maintenance of his cathedral Richard instituted a yearly collection to be made in every parish of the diocese on Easter or Whit Sunday. The mendicant orders, particularly the Dominicans, received special encouragement from him. In 1250 Richard was named as one of the collectors of the subsidy for the crusades (Bliss, Calendar of Papal Letters, I, 263) and two years later the king appointed him to preach the crusade in London. He made strenuous efforts to rouse enthusiasm for the cause in the Dioceses of Chichester and Canterbury, and while journeying to Dover, where he was to consecrate a new church dedicated to St. Edmund, he was taken ill. Upon reaching Dover, he went to a hospital called Maison Dieu, performed the consecration ceremony on 2 April, but died the next morning. His body was taken back to Chichester and buried in the cathedral. He was solemnly canonized by Urban IV in the Franciscan church at Viterbo, 1262, and on 20 Feb. a papal licence for the translation of his relics to a new shrine was given; The most accurate version of St. Richard's will, which has been frequently printed, is that given by Blaauw in Sussex Archaeological Collections, I, 164-92, with a translation and valuable notes. His life was written by his confessor Ralph Bocking shortly after his canonization and another short life, compiled in the fifteenth century, was printed by Capgrave. Both these are included in the notice of St. Richard in the Bollandist Acta Sanctorum. REFLECTION: Humility does not mean being timid or inhibited..It means acknowledging our littleness in the eyes of God; a little child , a son.--dynamism in our humility-- because when a child accepting his littleness , is helped by the all powerful protection of his Father, God, there is a dynamism in him which overflows into works of faith , of hope and of love, and of all the other virtuesthat the Holyspirit infuses into his soul.***( Friends of God--st.Josemaria) PRAYER BY ST. RICHARD: Thanks be to Thee, my Lord Jesus Christ For all the benefits Thou hast given me, For all the pains and insults Which Thou has borne for me. O most
[JOYnet] The Necklace
The Necklace The cheerful little girl with bouncy golden curls was almost five. Waiting with her mother at the checkout stand, she saw them, a circle of glistening white pearls in a pink foil box. Oh mommy please, Mommy. Can I have them? Please, Mommy, please? Quickly the mother checked the back of the little foil box and then looked back into the pleading blue eyes of her little girl's upturned face. A dollar ninety-five. That's almost $2.00. If you really want them, I'll think of some extra chores for you and in no time you can save enough money to buy them for yourself. Your birthday's only a week away and you might get another crisp dollar bill from Grandma. As soon as Jenny got home, she emptied her penny bank and counted out 17 pennies. After dinner, she did more than her share of chores and she went to the neighbor and asked Mrs. McJames if she could pick dandelions for ten cents. On her birthday, Grandma did give her another new dollar bill and at last she had enough money to buy the necklace. Jenny loved her pearls. They made her feel dressed up and grown up. She wore them everywhere, Sunday school, kindergarten, even to bed. The only time she took them off was when she went swimming or had a bubble bath. Mother said if they got wet, they might turn her neck green. Jenny had a very loving daddy and every night when she was ready for bed, he would stop whatever he was doing and come upstairs to read her a story. One night as he finished the story, he asked Jenny, Do you love me? Oh yes, daddy. You know that I love you. Then give me your pearls. Oh, daddy, not my pearls. But you can have Princess, the white horse from my collection, the one with the pink tail. Remember, daddy? The one you gave me. She's my very favorite. That's okay, Honey, daddy loves you. Good night. And he brushed her cheek with a kiss. About a week later, after the story time, Jenny's daddy asked again, Do you love me? Daddy, you know I love you. Then give me your pearls. Oh Daddy, not my pearls. But you can have my baby doll. The brand new one I got for my birthday. She is beautiful and you can have the yellow blanket that matches her sleeper. That's okay. Sleep well. God bless you, little one. Daddy loves you. And as always, he brushed her cheek with a gentle kiss. A few nights later when her daddy came in, Jenny was sitting on her bed with her legs crossed Indian style. As he came close, he noticed her chin was trembling and one silent tear rolled down her cheek. What is it, Jenny? What's the matter? Jenny didn't say anything but lifted her little hand up to her daddy. And when she opened it, there was her little pearl necklace. With a little quiver, she finally said, Here, daddy, this is for you. With tears gathering in his own eyes, Jenny's daddy reached out with one hand to take the dime store necklace, and with the other hand he reached into his pocket and pulled out a blue velvet case with a strand of genuine pearls and gave them to Jenny. He had them all the time. He was just waiting for her to give up the dime-store stuff so he could give her the genuine treasure. So it is, with our Heavenly Father. He is waiting for us to give up the cheap things in our lives so that he can give us beautiful treasures. Isn't God good? Are you holding onto things that God wants you to let go of? Are you holding on to harmful or unnecessary partners, relationships, habits and activities that you have come so attached to that it seems impossible to let go? Sometimes it is so hard to see what is in the other hand but do believe this one thing God will never take away something without giving you something better in its place. [JOYnet] breaking news!!!!!!!!!!
hi my dear ones in jesus, Yes finally it happened, answer to my prayer for the last 7 months! A prayer group in our college. Yes today , 31st March we have started a prayer group in St. Joseph's college of Engg and Tech., (SJCET) ,Palai. Everything happened all of a sudden, if I recollect, today in the morning Manager of our college called me and asked me is it possible to do something spiritual for the students. Some students already mentioned my name to him and he asked me the possibility of a prayer group, also conducting some one-day program for them. I was at bale for some moments, thanked the lord and rushed to staff room, asked a teacher who loves prayer group about the matter. She asked me why not we start it today itself? I was not at all prepared for the same in that short time, anyway today was the last day for first year classes in our college. I have asked the lord for prayer group in the first year and there is no time to waste. So I rushed to principal and to another father in our college who loves prayer. Result was dramatic, father agreed to lead the group and principal asked me to type a notice regarding the same to be read in all classes. Yes finally we started our first prayer group with 11 students and two teachers in a classroom. It was a new experience for all who attended the group and we shared about god's love. We promised to continue the group in coming semester too. Yes we dream very high for the kingdom of god, and we will attain it one day!! Thank you for your prayers. Do remember this small group of SJCET in your prayers. [JOYnet] zeal and commitment--The REX BAND
The Rex Band commitment Yesterday I was Emmaus for the planning session for the National Campus Discipleship Training. We were expecting the representative from various parts but due to some reasons only me and tito could be there. We prayed together and fixed the tendative date of the Training to be from the 18th to the 25th. Then I met this years fulltimer Training Program Coordinator Jose Mathew Chettai and it was a great time to be with him. Meanwhile the Audio Visual Team of the Rex Band were practising for the JOY 2003 a gathering of +1 students. Now this is what i call commitment I could say that they were about 15 of them jumping, dancing, falling on Concrete (They were not mad but they were practising)for hours on end. Umesh,Jaiby,Gibson and Dino were leading these young minds in which the eldest would be ! 17yrs I was thinking how tired I was feeling when I worked for the Lord after a day. But these young girls and boys who are barely 17 were practising day in and day out for a program and it takes real ZEAL AND COMMITMENT It was real fun to watch them crack jokes at others fool around and especially funny was a guy called Sijo who they call AALMARAM(banyan tree) due to its(oh!no)his width. he had a briuse in the head and yet he was going about with the practise. Some of them had even problems from their families. I remember on youth get a call from home and how he was able to convince them that it was for the kingdom of God. Now at this time when this guy was speaking all of them were praising God. From a distance he showed thumbs up to tell that it is done and we all sang together Thankyou Thankyou Jesus The amount of backstage work these people do is tremendous. all of us see them performing wonderfully but the effort and hardwork, the time (I heard that they start friday and on Sunday from 9:00 to 10:00 PM ---they have breaks) and the sacrifice is really praise worthy. God bless Shaji Chacko, Dubai 12kb jpg Saint John Mary Baptiste Vianney portrait painting, artist unknownOur Lord is hidden there, waiting for us to come and visit Him, and make our request to Him. See how good He is! He accommodates Himself to our weakness. In Heaven, where we shall be glorious and triumphant, we shall see him in all His glory. If He had presented Himself before us in that glory now, we should not have dared to approach Him; but He hides Himself, like a person in a prison, who might say to us, You do not see me, but that is no matter; ask of me all you wish and I will grant it. He is there in the Sacrament of His love, sighing and interceding incessantly with His Father for sinners. To what outrages does He not expose Himself, that He may remain in the midst of us! He is there to console us; and therefore we ought often to visit Him. How pleasing to Him is the short quarter of an hour that we steal from our occupations, from something of no use, to come and pray to Him, to visit Him, to console Him for all the outrages He receives! When He sees pure souls coming eagerly to Him, He smiles upon them. They come with that simplicity which pleases Him so much, to ask His pardon for all sinners, for the outrages of so many ungrateful men. What happiness do we not feel in the presence of God, when we find ourselves alone at His feet before the holy tabernacles! Come, my soul, redouble thy fervour; thou art alone adoring thy God. His eyes rest upon thee alone. This good Saviour is so full of love for us that He seeks us out everywhere. Ah! if we had the eyes of angels with which to see Our Lord Jesus Christ, who is here present on this altar, and who is looking at us, how we should love Him! We should never more wish to part from Him. We should wish to remain always at His feet; it would be a foretaste of Heaven: all else would become insipid to us. But see, it is faith we want. We are poor blind people; we have a mist before our eyes. Faith alone can dispel this mist. Presently, my children, when I shall hold Our Lord in my hands, when the good God blesses you, ask Him then to open the eyes of your heart; say to Him like the blind man of Jericho, O Lord, make me to see! If you say to Him sincerely, Make me to see! you will
[JOYnet] Priests Chastity
Dear Friends, Since 1965, more than 80,000 priests have been laicized according to Fr. Florencio Testera, former dean of cannon law. In the USA, more than 2500 priests since 1982 have sexually molested children. Many bishops were forced to resign from their offices after newspapers had exposed their sexual scandals. After having found several orphanages worldwide a certain priest, devoted all his time to his apostolate, which soon turned into a purely humanitarian activity. Because he was too busy, he found less time for prayer. Though he continued to celebrate mass, he neglected his meditation, Rosary, Confession and Holy Hours. Soon, he began to drink. When wine no longer satisfied him, he was driven to sexual fantacies. But he was well known as a priest, so he could not be in sexual relationship with a women. He thought he should release his sexual urges either alone or with the children in the orphanage. One victim followed another. It all become so obvious that the New York Times exposed his sexual abuses and accused him of pedophilia. His donors were shocked, the staff was appalled forcing the hierarchy to remove him from the orphanage he had supported for forty years. Truly, without Chastity, all good works come to an end. Yet the opposite is also true. St. John Bosco established many orphanages- more than this priest in New York ever did. The big difference is Don Bosco remained chaste and holy. His life was a life of intense prayer. He would meditate from 1:00 am to 5:00 am daily; heard confession ten hours a day; celebrated Mass with great reverence as if each Mass was his last; and he would pray at least three Rosaries everyday and the Stations of the Cross. His chastity and sanctity brought many orphans to love God and the Virgin Mary. It was no surprise then that saints were nurtured in his orphanages. Even Virgin Mary would physically visit some of them. Don Boscos work has brought the Church many young saints such as St. Dominic Savio, Blessed Laura Vicuna, and hundreds of others. True imitation of Jesus Christ is to remain chaste, poor and obedient. Moreover the problem of unchastity among clerics cannot be solved by simply allowing priests to marry. St. Paul tells us in Corinthians 7:14, that there are those who are called to be virgins. Let them who can remain virgins remain as such, for it is written (Rev 14:4): The virgins follow the Lamp wherever He goes (Fr. Bing Arellano) Bensilal Chacko,DE,USA. _ High ISD bills?
