the real reason for this was 'kdisplay' being installed on the machine
After removal of kdisplay all is back to 'expected normal' again

Our problem in both Debian Unstable (sid) and Ubuntu Kinetic Kudu (Future
22.10, due in October) is that ffmpeg 4 simply no longer exists, therefore
7.8.0 is a no-go for us. Therefore, we must use the master
