Amarok does not play sound, this is done by Phonon. You very likely have a
mixup of phonon Qt4 and Qt5 based stuff, please address this to your
distribution.
FWIW: Amarok git master plays sound quite fine here, so this is specific to
your installation

You do realise you can change the display order yourself, do you? The default
display order is just a suggestion, it's up to the user to choose what suits
them best.
FWIW, I rarely sort by genre, for example, so this is your specific use case
FWIW2: since the upcoming Amarok 2.9 is more than 500 commits ahead of the
version you use, I wouldn't be astonished if that were already fixed anyway.

I set this to wishlist and to be resolved later, as we do not work on the
Qt4-based version anymore after the 2.9 release.

Which Phonon backend?
Where are those tracks located (local, remote)?
Since you use Gentoo: did you try the current git master instead? it is about
500 commits ahead of Amarok 2.8.0, and I see no freezes on track change at all,
might well be something already solved.

no, not all players handle playlists the same way as amarok does, the more
tracks you put in the playlist, the more tracks have to be checked for
availability on startup, and that can substantially slow down the startup
procedure.
Just don't put all your collection in the playlist, use the playlist generator,
smart playlists or the collection filters instead.

no wonder, you are not meant to put your entire collection in the playlist,
there have been many reports about this, this is not a bug but a normal side
effect. Sorry if this is not how you intend to use it, but this is definitely a
use case we do not cater for.
Use the various playlist capacities of Amarok instead.

There already is a bug filed for the VLC backend AFAIK, so I close this one.

FIW: backend problems should always be filed under the respective products, as

hm, I can't reproduce this here on a rather old KDE4 installation, so this
might well be related to other changes in the system. Tested with Amarok git
master on KDE 4.14.2, Kubuntu 14.10, changed genre and album artist tags on ogg
files. All the files are still playable and no corruption visible. I somewhat
doubt this is related to Amarok, more likely another library you use.

I guess you use a mix of plugins for gstreamer 1.x and 0.10, where the current
phonon backend, compiled against Qt4 (remember, Amarok is still based on Qt4,
not Qt5!) requires the 1.x libraries. Ditto for the vlc backend, btw, make sure
you use the correct phonon versions.

Why on earth would you erase all columns in the Files Browser? Sounds like an
extreme corner case to me...
But I can confirm the bug, this is indeed annoying, even if not many people
will probably do that.

The problem can also be solved quite easily: in your ~/.kde/share/apps/amarok/
folder, erase the file named file_browser_layout. This file is only created if
you change anything in the Files Browser settings, erasing (or moving) it
solves the issue.

Unfortunately you do not have debugging symbols installed for all Amaroks
dependencies which are needed to make this backtrace fully useful, please

FWIW: this appears to be a duplicate of bug 364354 which in fact is a
Pulseaudio issue. Another thing to mention is a GL problem with the block
analyzer, but that was solved quite some time ago and all distros should have
that fix in since 2 years or so.
Could you eventually test amarok 2.9 beta (aka 2.8.90)? This is way ahead of
your current version and should not have such problems.

So you say this is not related to CD alone? What exactly would you expect to be
the normal behavior?
As said before: everything not permanently in the collection will not show
accurately when using filters that are meant to be used for collection items
only. IMHO this is just a side-effect, as soon as you remove the CD these
tracks should not appear in a filter anymore. Maybe this needs a little time to
give Amarok the opportunity to update the stats.
Sadly I can test as I don't have a CD player at hand.

But: tracks to have playcount incremented need to be part of the collection
permanently, which a CD isn't if you play it from the CD player.
So having no play-count incremented is the correct behavior for everything
outside of the collection.
The last-play time will only show as such as long as the CD remains inserted,
it will disappear once the CD is removed.

Yes, that is usually a good method.

Anyway, your backtrace shows this is a problem in gamin that needs to be solved
upstream, and we already have a bug report about this, please see the main bug
report for possible solutions. AFAIR Rex has posted a possible solution for
Fedora already.

Could you please also install the missing symbols? Mainly for

This is a problem with gstreamer, not Amarok, and it was solved by using a
newer phonon-backend-gstreamer that uses the gstreamer 1.x libraries.
You should check with your distribution, they should provide you with these
packages since quite some time already.

First of all: you do not have debugging symbols installed for Amarok, so the
backtrace is only partly useful. Please see

on how to install debugging symbols for Amarok and it's dependencies on your
distribution.

Besides that, since you have kdelibs debugging symbols installed, it appears
the crash happens in kdelibs, but for the backtrace to be fully useful, it
would be nice to have a new one with all debugging symbols installed, including
those for Amarok.

under the correct tag you have in Album Artist.

Sadly your backtrace doesn't have debugging symbols, so it is not really
useful.

FWIW: this crash has already been reported before, the problem is that
musicbrainz have changed their API and we would have to change the
dependencies, which is quite some work

It is relevant insofar that it confirms the stream doesn't send UTF encoded
tracks, but using  the old obsolete ISO encoding. You should report this
problem to the stream owners and ask them to encode their streams correctly.
ISO is obsolete since the 1990ies ...

@all: please read the comments in a bug report if you are interested in fixing
it, there are enough clues on how to proceed. And if a bug report doesn't

The tag encoding in the preferences is not applied to stream, only to the
collection for Synchronisation purposes, so this is not a bug, but a wish.
